[Music] when my wife decided that we were finished I didn't have much say in the matter she initially gave me a week to get out of the house when I came home from work the next day the locks were changed am i closer on the lawn and boxes I suppose I should be thankful for the boxes so for the second time in six months I was looking for a new place to live we had moved out here halfway across the country and my wife's demand I didn't know anyone within 1,200 miles sure and there were a couple of people at work who took pity and offered me a couch to sleep on but I'd only been on the job for a few months it didn't feel right to impose on people who I impaired they knew I started calling every ad listing for a room for rent and I tried my best to explain the situation and my urgency after two nights of living in my car I met Tom he found my story oddly hilarious he said he had been to the same type of thing before and he could relate he invited me out for some beers to discuss the details of the LEAs tom was boisterous the kind of guy who was entirely oblivious to what people think of Emma I'm not usually much of a drinker but after several hours of tom agee Miyata I was all butts on the floor the time insisted that I come back and sleep in my new place and we never actually got around to discussing the leis I woke up the next morning with a mind-shattering hangover in room that I had never seen before her it took me more than a few minutes to get my bearings but when I did I was surprised at how nice the place was it was fully furnished I mean sure was in the style of an old woman's Alma but beggars can't be choosers but I walked out of the room and I searched the house up and down for any sign of time but we never discussed what he did for a living so I wasn't even sure if he'd still be her if he had left for work hours ago after searching the entire house with no lock I ventured outside at nod Tom relaxing on his porch with a beer in his hand hey hand lived in the one on the left with his family for years the one on the right the one that I woke up in was built for his mother she had died a few years ago he planned on gift in the second house to his son as a wedding present but then just over one year his wife just stopped and left him in the middle of the night she took the kid with them huh Tom hadn't seen or heard from him since he was offering me an entire house for the cost of renting aroma I could tell that the guy was lonely I cannot even imagine an entire year on a mountain by herself I got the impression he would let me stay for free as long as I shared a beer with him from time to time it turned out that tom was independently wealthy he was very tech savvy he held patents on some network infrastructure that is still in use today and the cache rolled in through licensing fees it wasn't just the discount on the rant and Tom paid for the utilities and the trash service cable and internet practically everything so even though Tom would not be the normal guy that I would hang out with I'd have to be an idiot to pass up something like this I mentioned how tom was handy attack right well I don't know if he was always paranoid or if it was living alone on a mountain that brought it on the time at his home covered in security cameras just on the outside and I could visually confirm the presence of a no fewer than 12 cameras but we did most of our drinking down at the bar on Tom's porch so I rarely stepped foot inside his home but I soon found out that there wasn't a square inch of the interior that the cameras missed the thankfully time respected my privacy in my rented house and completely free of surveillance cameras I wonder to this day how differently things would have turned out if I had respected his privacy half as much I discovered the security feed by accident and my prior rocky marriage led to a lot of experience sleeping on couches because of this I often fell asleep watching TV one night as I awoke I must have dropped the remote to the floor it caused the TV to change channels and display an empty hallway and that creepy green infrared night-vision that was it no one was on the screen just an empty hallway and I shook the sleep of my eyes grab the remote and hit the info bottom a general 9090 on a hunch I had to channel up antenna and 99f this one showed the same hallway but from just kind of forgot I didn't turn back to those channels for weeks until Tom gave me a reason to remember how I said that I thought Tom seemed lonely when we first met well I wasn't remotely correct on that at least two or three nights a week I'd be woken up by Tom's loud truck pulling up outside I could always hear him in his lately girl huh giggling as they made their way inside of the house I couldn't help but be happy for the guy we had both been screwed over by our wives and Tom was making the most out of his newfound bachelor life sure and these ladies were probably getting paid for their time but there isn't really anything wrong with that is there and the night I turned the security feed back on started like any other I was trying to thought much to sleep when I heard Tom's truck pulling up I figured that I might as well get a midnight snack now that I was fully awake on the way to the kitchen I peeked out of the window to get a look at Toms latest girl I was surprised to see that she was my age young enough to be Tom's daughter she had long brown hair parted down the middle a stout exactly the same way my wife wore her hair it had been weeks since I moved onto the wake you buddy we're all finished over here now she won't be giving you any more trouble the whole conversation felt odda the time didn't seem to acknowledge the seriousness of what I heard he just phone in the dark well the mayhem on the screen continued I couldn't take it anymore and I shut off the TV I had to practically beg the 9 on one dispatcher to send a unit to the house and they had no record of the house ever being built on top of this mountain yet alone two of them huh and they thought that I was making the story up of a madman chopping a woman into tiny pieces and it took them over an hour to show up they came with a swirly and blue and red lights but no sirens so much for catching Tom off guard he must have noticed the lights and Tom was out on the front door before the cops had even acted at their vehicle I watched everything for my living room window Tom didn't even look the slightest bit worried he reached out his hand for a shake and he laughed - II play him they place to happen his foot to the song and just as suddenly as it had started he stopped everything was silent and I couldn't look away Tom turned around and stare right into the camera huh he told his cops thought that I was a drunk fool and Tom somehow was able to get rid of all the evidence a mutilated dismembered corpse just up and vanished how and the security feeds the useless security feed he wanted me to watch but to be a part of the sick hobby of his if he wanted me to watch I decided that that is just what I would do I named myself protector of all who would step foot at the top of that mountain seven I knew Tom scheduled he had never left his house during the day normally didn't even get out of bed until mid-afternoon uh the girls that he had been bringing back her band picked up from bars at night it made it easy for me to continue to go to work rush home and use the security feeds to keep track of Tom if town left the house and so did I when Tom went into town to visit the bar I went right along with Emma I had sit there right across the table talking to shit and sharing a drink he kept up the act like nothing had changed at all but each time that has scared a girl away from the table I could see the burning rage in his eyes things carried out like this for weeks I successfully prevented Tom from bringing anyone back up to us Alice until some idiot on the freeway cut off an 18-wheeler Emmett turned the highway into a park in that four hours by the time I got to the base of the mountain and had turned off onto our dirt road the Sun had long since gone down I prayed that time and it left yet and that he hadn't gone into town to find his prey and when I pulled up to our houses and I saw that his truck was still parked there I almost burst into tears and I felt like Glo Tina and Tom hadn't even realized that tonight was this golden opportunity I strode up towards his house for him better than I had in weeks and then I saw the purse in the passenger seat of his truck I ran straight for his front door and I drove my shoulder into it with every ounce of strength that I had it might as well been a steel wall I tried kicking it in but that door didn't budge in the slightest it was like it was reinforced to withstand a nuclear assault the windows were next nothing I'd try could even cause a scratch in the glass I tried my fist a shoe ax rocks a loose brick it was freakin bulletproof so I did the only thing laughs then I called the cops what is your emergency he has another girl please send someone to help now and I shouted while running back to my house to turn on the security feed and see if the woman even had time left to be saved sir I'm sorry please slow down and tell me where you're located in the full details of the operator stop talking I could hear someone else speaking at them in the background but I couldn't make out what they were saying that the thankfully I was able to locate Tom and the girl on the security feed quickly they were back in the basement as expected she was on the ground crying with her hands tied down her back as Tom ran his hand through her dark hair what are you waiting for send the goddamn cops before he kills her sir I'm sorry we just pulled up the report of your previous incident we've been instructed not to set any more units to this residence you've gotta be kidding me I screamed and you'll be tossing my phone across the room the operator is asking me to calm down as I watch time get up and walk to a nearby table and grab that all-too-familiar axe alright I'm sorry and I pleaded him don't set anyone just please humor me and call him the call time and check to make sure everything is okay Tom slowly walked across the room towards the girl she saw the accident loose a scream then I will never forget she tried desperately to squirm away from Tom but there was nowhere to go please call him ask to speak with the girl please the operator must have heard the sheer desperation of my boys they actually agreed to do it I quickly gave them the number and then I hung up for the first time since I was a child I found myself down on my knees and prayer as I hung did the desperate hope that can become normal I never considered myself a hateful mad my cheating whore of a wife was the only person in the entire planet that I really felt any ill-will towards a imagining that each of these look so much like her what's going on are you okay the girl jumped back into a defensive posture eyes wide like a deer about to be splattered by a car I raised my hands in surrender trying to see him was non-threatening as possible what happened in there I asked her fuck it explained on the way I need to get you to safety it took a while longer to convince her to accept my assistance but she knew on Tom's face and it felt good to finally be the one to control and to regain a sense of power over my life that I hadn't had since my wife left me I reached out my hand she's at my place and don't worry she isn't going anywhere and my knots are solid when you get your shit together and we can go see her Tom hesitantly took my hand and allowed me to help him to his feet our hands were a class
