Reminds me of the Colleroy-Narrabeen story in Sydney. One long beach was developed very close to the water on the southern side destroying the vegetation and dune systems, while the north remained intact. What resulted was the council wasting millions of dollars every year digging up sand from the north side and dumping it back to the south because erosion has become so bad and the wealthy apartment owners that live there refuse to leave.
