night prayer meeting at kensington temple we're so glad to have you with us today and to have you watching at home also if you don't like to stand to your feet we're gonna begin with some praise and worship to god and we just pray that god will fill this place with his presence and that things will be changed tonight clap your hands for amen tonight [Music] the bible says clap your hands all you that new and living way the access that we have into your presence by your spirit through this grace in jesus name amen please be seated everybody hello and welcome to those who are joining us online in the live stream great to have you with us also in the building wonderful that we share this now we need to be alert and watchful in prayer more than ever before i'm going to share a message on that in just a moment encourage you to participate at home andrew will be heading up the prayer this evening after in the second part of the service and the number of people lined up with very clear uh prophetic prayer lines for us to follow like you to turn in your bibles to one timothy chapter two last week i spent time on the first verse uh and now we're going to go a little bit further into the chapter and i'm doing this as i often do in this wednesday evening prayer times to give you some teaching some encouragement and that you might know all the more about how to be effective in prayer 1 timothy chapter 2 verses 1 to 4. first of all then i urge that supplications prayers intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all people for kings and all who are in high positions that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life godly and dignified in every way this is good and it is pleasing in the sight of god our savior who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth as i say last week i covered the first verse and uh that also went out on kttv on sunday and there we showed how that above all things prayer prayer prayer and he says i urge you to pray then he lists four words that trace the process of prayer you will know this process in your own devotional life you will know it when we pray together and it becomes all the more obvious when we get back to the opportunity that we had before lockdown and before covid to be engaging in corporate prayer with us all praying together following the holy spirit supplications prayers intercessions and thanksgivings refer you to last week's message for the content on that now he ends verse 1 by saying pray for all people no one should be excluded from your prayers however the apostle paul highlights a category of people that should have the lion's share priority place in our prayers i wonder who you might think that ought to be if you didn't have the text open in front of you i wonder if you might think of yourself above all things pray for yourself not a wrong thing to do above all things pray for your loved ones of course pray for your family of course pray for those who are in particular need of course but riding above all these other priorities god is calling us to pray for kings and all who are in high positions i want you to think back to the context of the first century was not an easy time you think we have it tough try being a believer a follower of christ in ad35 a.d 36 a.d 68 a.d 64. think about that look at the journeys of the apostle paul look at the hardships look at the opposition the judaizers dogged his steps those were the people who wanted to bring this early movement of jesus followers into the confines of legalism surprised by those people then there are those who fought against the gospel for economic reasons we think of demetrius the silversmith he he was out of business because they abandoned their idols then you think of all the uh accusations that were coming from those in roman authority they were on a collision course because the roman leaders the roman emperors took to themselves divine honors and some of the early persecutions that we read about in church history have to do with whether the believers would sacrifice to caesar whether they would swear by the genius of rome the genius of rome genius is a roman religious term which speaks about the divine presence the divine spark in every one of us those philosophies and ideas are around till today they're not new ideas the new age didn't invent it but the genius of rome or the genius of the emperor was the very special manifestation of divinity in the person of the emperor he was given divine honors the coyoans gave him divine honors he was called the highest priest mixing religion and politics in the very way that jesus said they should be separated give to caesar what is caesar's gift to god what is god's if you've been following my teaching on sunday you will heard in the message on persecution that some of the early believers would rather die than deny jesus they said we want to be ourselves let us be who we are we're christ followers and sometimes that was just a matter of whether they would offer sacrifices and swear some kind of divine allegiance to the emperor so the heat was on nero was to come to the throne and he was the most despicable in many ways of the roman emperors and he actively persecuted christians it is said that he lit his uh debaucherous feasts by setting on fire filling with tar and setting on fire christians who were dotted around his gardens now at such a time as that you know you need to pray for government but let's fast forward today as we look around the world right now as we're speaking there are crises taking place in afghanistan the taliban have taken over terrorist threats are once more on the horizon a cruel regime that interprets literally the islamic religion and tries to follow it to the letter and so there are great needs to pray andrew will be praying for afghanistan but also if we look around other parts of the world united states of america pray for that government they need it different nations in africa political leaders presidents being assassinated and there's unrest everywhere today more than ever before we need to step up our prayer for governments for kings and all who are in authority paul in romans 13 talks about how would you obey them and god has ordained them whether they are appear to be godly or not we are to pray for them and when we come to our own nation i would not like to be the prime minister for all the money in the world first of all i'm not called to that office and secondly i wouldn't want it even if i was because he's got an impossible job right now difficult times but let's have a look at some of the scriptural reasons why which are to pray for kings and all who are in authority and just before we do that let me say this is talking about ongoing continuous prayer and we know when we combine prayer with fasting not only are we humbling ourselves but we're demonstrating the seriousness that we have derek prince wrote a book about how to change history through prayer and fasting and it really is a matter of biblical fact and revelation that god does nothing but by the prayers of his people are quoted often never tire of quoting it c h spurgeon the great baptist preacher of the 1900 of the 1800s the 19th century described prayer like this he said prayer is the slender nerve that moves the muscles of omnipotence saints of god you don't know the power and the influence you have when you pray mary queen of scots was reported to say that she feared the prayers of john knox more than all the armies of the british when we pray the devil trembles when we pray strongholds come tumbling down when we pray the destiny of individuals families communities and nations are changed pray pray pray especially for those who are in high positions some of the reasons that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life godly and dignified in every way very interesting now in the sermon on the mount and i told you that these two messages will overlap in a way in the sermon on the mount jesus warns us and prepares us for persecution and opposition and particularly that early bunch of disciples they they were going to experience a big time before that generation was over rome was going to be uh marshalled against a jewish rebellion there was going to be death and destruction on an unprecedented scale the believers were warned to flee jerusalem when they saw the armies of uh of rome surrounding jerusalem and there was going to be a lot of deception and difficulty wars rumors of wars and turmoil in the ancient world and throughout it all there was going to be persecution for believers followers of christ now i've heard this many times and i understand what they mean but i don't really agree with it not wholeheartedly i've heard people say let the persecution come that's just what we need and they will quote one of the which was the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church and i can go that far that is true but believe me we don't want it here in this country we don't want that to happen and the more the opposition goes the less the more silent we are the less we pray it can happen it's already happening in some respects believers are losing their lives for professing faith in christ it doesn't make the headlines a lot of it has to do with the opposition that comes from opposing religions where they considered a matter of dishonor and also a capital offense in order in their religious thinking to to turn away from the religion into which they were born but increasingly it's becoming difficult to stand up for jesus as nowhere near as tough as is it could be and tough as maybe it's going to be but travel with me in different parts of the world story after story of what it really means to live under persecution right now in different parts of the world we have to pray for the wisdom of god to continue the work that god has given us to do and the more known we become the harder it is to travel and freely teach and preach the gospel in these nations no paul says pray for the opposite pray that the nation will be so influenced by believers acting assault shining as light restraining the powers of darkness overthrowing some of the plans and strategies of the enemy praying for leaders so that we have a government in the natural realm that at the very least creates the society in which the gospel and the spread of the gospel can flourish so first of all peaceful we pray for governments that there may be peace in our nation now i know that in times of difficulty times of war times even of covid that people's hearts sometimes are more open to god and god will use difficult situations many of the refugees who are fleeing right now from afghanistan are fleeing not just the taliban but they're fleeing their whole religious background for whatever persuasion because they are disillusioned disillusioned i told a story on sunday of a man who was approached by one of the people that they'd been helping refugees in the in jordan in amman who'd come fleeing from isis and other difficulties in the region and they said they went to the people of our own religion and they just turned us away thousands and thousands and thousands of refugees no food nothing to eat that's why we pray that's why we give intermissions that's why we go on missions and then the question was why are you doing this why are you doing this and of course it's the love of jesus so yes in difficult times there are unique opportunities but in peaceful times the gospel spreads better better now the proof of that is the history of the very early church i don't know if you've studied at all or heard it referred to the pax romana that was the peace that the roman conquests brought to the then known world it meant also that there was a universal language koine greek the lingua franca the commercial language of the day and that could spread and so order of government the ability for people to study to learn to think about new ideas the freedom of travel right now uh while we have zoom we thank god for that we need to pray for those doors to open again that we can travel and spread the gospel with the beautiful feet of those who bring good news bringing the gospel of peace to the nations so when there is order and stability when infrastructure is in place one of the problems that i have when even during lockdown and in covid trying to communicate to places in the world where they just do not have any stable internet connection to speak of and it's extremely difficult and we have them listening to the sound only on mobile phone clustered in homes and in villages and please just listening so eager for the word of god how much better it would be if they could have all of the technology that's available to them peace quiet life now this is not peace at any price or anything for a quiet life not the kind of quietness of complacency that says it's easy we can cross the street uh and buy a dozen bibles from w.h smith's we can go to the church building if we feel like it or if we don't we don't have to not that kind of piece of complacency but the ability to travel freely the freedom to walk through open doors to worship jesus openly to proclaim him publicly with respect engaging people not just with harsh words or criticism or mere dogmatic statements but to speak persuasively to be able to speak from a position of having knowledge and understanding not just of what we believe but why we believe what we believe and all of that quiet life is conducive to it godly those who live godly in christ may very well be persecuted but when we're praying for governments and praying for the nation the standards and expectations concerning goodness appear to be acceptable in people's hearts it's becoming more and more difficult to stand for the righteousness of god through the biblical worldview a biblical view of spirituality a biblical view of morality a biblical view of family of marriage and of many other things so it's praying into that situation so that there may be godliness will be upheld and at least it may not be according to the regenerated hearts of people around you they may not understand fully they may not believe themselves but for them to respect the godly stand that you make and to be able to say well there goes a good man there goes a godly man the one of the most vociferous opponents of william wilberforce in the house of parliament when he was fighting against slavery was a godless man a godless man but finally he stood with william wilberforce and made many jokes about the fact that i don't know what what he used with he said he here is god and here is the devil he says why would you expect me to be siding with this godly man and it was all jokes in parliament but in those days there was a general understanding of goodness and godliness and there was a kind of fear of god and when we saturate our lives and saturate our circumstances saturate our involvement in our workplace our school our home life saturate that with prayer that rises from that a sense of pervasive godliness and when there is a praying community godliness flourishes when there when people are at prayer and seeking the face of god godliness goes up in the land and people recognize that there is none good but god and then he says do this because it is pleasing in the sight of our god and savior that right there is enough it pleases god it pleases god when you pray for boris johnson it pleases god when you pray for all the other members of parliament and all the people who are in local authority it pleases god this is something that satisfies the heart of god why i guess because that creates for the lord an opportunity to work in covenant with his people to bring about godly purposes in our nation and across the world then he goes on to say there's a reason why it is pleasing to god because he desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth which shows what paul is getting at we pray for government that we might create an atmosphere and environment we might become thermostat believers not thermostat believers uh yeah thermostat believers rather than thermometer believers thermometer believers take the temperature and reflect the temperature thermostat believers set the temperature god says i want you to set the spiritual temperature in your home through prayer in your neighborhood through prayer in your community in your workplace wherever i put you i want you to set the spiritual temperature of the city and of the nation and kensington temple has been praying people many for many many decades right now and we could give testimony after testimony of how we shaped many events along with all god's praying and fasting people by our persistent powerful praying now why is it important because god wants and desires everybody all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth now this is not how we normally interpret now i've heard people interpret it say he's saying now pray for the lost now i want to tell you i believe in praying for the lost i'm i i believe in praying for a person to be saved but you know there's very little directives in the scripture that we should do that paul nowhere records a prayer for a gentile to be saved the closest it comes to it is i pray for my own people that they might be saved now it doesn't mean to say it's wrong to pray for people to be saved but god is giving us a strategy and guidance on how to pray so that people will be pray people will be saved first of all we go back to the words i pray that i ask you for thanksgiving to be made for all people four kings to pray four kings now that word for means to pray on behalf of it doesn't just mean to pray for boris johnson but it means to pray because boris johnson may not know how to pray this is your priestly ministry jesus prays on our behalf we don't know how to pray so where people in parliament don't even believe in god you step in stand in the gap and pray the prayers that they need to pray but don't know how to pray don't have faith to pray may not even believe in god the god of prayer so this is a holy priestly exercise and it is sacred so we pray on behalf of them and when we pray in such a way as it creates the atmosphere and environment for people to be saved we are learning how to pray and push back through our prayers the powers of darkness the bible says the god of this world has blinded the hearts and minds of those who do not believe so they cannot see now one of the clearest ways to pray for people to be saved is to pray that the obstacles that are blocking them obstacles mountains obstacles that are blocking them from seeing the gospel you can't pray in such a way as you uh control or even influence their heart the heart is sacred every person must themselves make their own decision you can't do it for them you can't believe for them you can't be baptized for them in their place but you can pray on their behalf and when you pray on their behalf you can push back those spiritual obstacles the strongholds that are in the mind and do and to do that through prayer prayer is not enough you know that prayer in the bible is never enough on its own did you know that read my book prayer that gets answers prayer effective prayer is always mixed with something else prayer with fasting prayer with giving prayer with faith prayer with perseverance always prayer with something and here what is in this text if you look deeply enough you'll see it coming out at you he's saying pray with understanding that people may receive the message of the gospel with understanding and the strongholds are not it's not just running around shouting at demons i don't think that ever does any good anyway the strongholds are the strongholds of the mind it is learning how to pray against the spiritual forces behind the deceiving lies of the enemy that are blinding the hearts and minds of people who do not believe but also opening the way through prayer for an effective presentation of the gospel paul said in ephesians chapter 6 right after that passage on spiritual warfare taking up the whole armor of god and he says pray for me that boldness will be given to me boldness there means freedom of speech boldness utterance may be given to me that i may niv says that i may speak spiritual truths with spiritual words words given by the holy spirit so in this you're praying for preachers you're praying for the proclamation of the gospel you are giving your witness giving your testimony preaching the gospel but not just indiscriminately saying as it were whatever you feel like but having prepared your heart prepared your mind prepared your presentations but then being open to the holy spirit that he might use what you say we do this every time we preach we say god take my mouth use it we work we prepare many many many hours many many hours so we have research understanding far far far more material than we could ever present within the given time limit but then when we've done all of that we said god without you it's not going to happen i may deliver a word perfect sermon i've never delivered a word perfect sermon in my life but people may deliver a word perfect sermon and it can have no effect whatsoever we may deliver a message where people stand up and applaud and say that was a marvelous message and have no effect whatsoever you may struggle in communication but when god puts his words on your mouth and you have spiritual truths expressed in spiritual words a transformation takes place so god says pray for governments that the nation and the circumstances will line up in a way that's conducive to live out the gospel proclaim it and see many many people come to christ amen amen let's give jesus a praise [Applause] okay here we go we're going to prepare for offering now that young people gather to enjoy it's very popular attract a lot of people i know it is holiday time not term time but many students are part of that be in prayer but also be aware and let everybody know about that okay let's stand we're going to give and then hand straight over to andrew let's pray a loving giving and forgiving heavenly father in a way tonight as we pray and as we give we're not doing them as separate acts they are indeed both one act of worship but also as we give we link our faith to our giving and our praying to our faith and we know as we mix our prayers with giving sacrificially to you then that enables our voice to be that much more effectively heard on high father we know we don't buy a single answer to prayer but as our hearts are open and our hands are open and lifted up to you in prayer you can supply into those receiving hands the very answers to the prayers that we are about to make in jesus name amen [Music] [Applause] [Applause] like jesus our so i want to lead some prayer points a prayer point concerning afghanistan but for those who don't who don't know the full story of what's actually happening or some of the the the issues that are taking place i'm gonna i want to talk about some stuff here so british families have um who are in kabul still they haven't been communicated to they know um there's there's british moms there's british dads who are trying to be in communication with their families in afghanistan there's no communication they haven't seen them so we're going to be praying into that issue families being taken hostage and beaten by taliban that's already been filmed and is happening right now the un has announced that there's a potential food shortage and the afghanistan economy being in potential crisis already the raf are are still making air lifts out of kabul and nearly 2 000 afghan interpreters and other staff who worked for britain are still there the taliban regime is a regime of complete oppression and as pastor colin was talking about it is the taliban they they they apply the the the the muslim laws the islamic laws to the letter and it's full of oppression so what we're going to be praying about is for god's restoration it's for god's healing that even though the enemy has meant it for bad god's going to change it for good amen so i want us everyone to stand up on their feet we're going to pray we're going to pray pastor colin alluded to 2 corinthians 10 verse 4 to 5. i'll read it out for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds we destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of god and take every thought captive to obey christ so lord we thank you we thank you lord that your blood declares us to be righteous we thank you o lord that the praise of the righteous prevail much we are speaking out hallelujah your desire your will from the throne room of grace and as we speak out these words the sword of the spirit is coming out of our mouths and we thank you o lord that prayer has no limit that prayer has an effect and it will affect the lives of those in afghanistan right now in the name of jesus lord we thank your lord that your presence hallelujah is with us we thank you oh lord that you are going to bring about a turnaround in afghanistan we lift up the leaders in afghanistan and we declare that the light of the gospel shall be seen the life of god shall be received in such a time as this lord we thank you o lord that your desire is for your life to be seen your desires for truth to be received and heard we lift up the brothers and sisters in christ who live in afghanistan right now and we declare for courage for the boldness of the spirit to encourage them and to enable them to share the message of the gospel we thank you o lord that they the afghans are not without hope they are not without hope lord we thank you lord that as our prayers are being released that the ears of governments all around the world are being affected declare in jesus name that correct wise decisions at governmental levels shall be made in order for certain afghanistan to prosper based on these decisions we declare that the afghanistan community shall not be left alone under the the tyranny of the taliban but we declare freedom we declare freedom from the living god to be made manifest in afghanistan we declare that all the tears hallelujah shall be wiped away that jesus shall have his way in afghanistan in the name of jesus yes oh lord we thank you o lord we declare the anxiety the fear that is being perpetuated from this situation we declare that there shall be peace we speak shalom shalom perfect peace into the hearts of those in afghanistan we speak perfect peace into the hearts of those in government we declare hallelujah in jesus name that our prime minister will make effective decisions that are in line with what god is saying we declare right now in jesus name as a result of this prayer that the government hallelujah in america the government in europe we declare that they will make decisions that will bring god's desire to pass in this situation lord we thank you we bless your holy name that we are your children that the prayers of the righteous do prevail and we stand and declare your wisdom your majesty to come to pass in the name of jesus we have prayed hallelujah hallelujah god bless you all god bless you all okay so i want us to keep that energy i want us to remember that we are sons of the most high children of the most high and that our words that come out of our mouth are powerful amen so i just want to introduce sister grace for me and folake to come in to share some prayer points as well god bless you all thank you praise god praise believe in the name of our lord jesus christ our god is good amen amen now is the time we're gonna have a fresh activation of a prayer life fresh activation of prayer altar that our prayer life will start to make difference will start to make difference i mean thank god that we have be called as such a time as this and the power of god the blessings of god is upon each one of us okay so why am i here tonight it's um for us to pray that the lord we ignite our prayer alter our prayer life we have to be consistent when we are consistent then there is a difference there will be a shift our in the in one of our writers e m bounds it says prayer breaks all bars it dissolves all chains it open all prising and widen all strength by which god's saints have been held so everywhere people have been held captive prayer changes it there is power in prayer prayer with anointing there is power in that and then it says that the more praying there diaries in the world the more praying i'm just adding mine now today is that the more praying there is in the world in our life in our family in a city then the better the world will be and the mightier the forces against evil will be demolished you know and you know like pastor colin was saying earlier on the more we pray we get to the place where we rest under the lord we rest we see changes that where demons do not have space you know there's power in prayer but so what is it that sees this in our life so we are going to pray now and i would like every one of us to stand up please we're going to engage in that fresh anointing in that fresh grace so you know there's tomorrow going on everywhere it's no news to us and we don't have to be listening to those news and also things are at breaking points breaking our parts so we need to renew our prayer life and we need to do great exploit for god so but then the question is god says do not think of the things of all for i am going to do a new thing what are
