now that i've had a chance to try the vanguard beta on both ps4 as well as pc for kind of extended period of time on this beta i'm going to kind of go through the good the bad the ugly my general thoughts about the game we're going to be covering all these various topics as you guys can see if you want to go ahead and skip to a specific section i will have timestamps down below if you enjoy the video learn something new please do me a favor hit the like button if you're brand new want to find your way back double check make sure you are subscribed with notifications on and just a heads up my g field code is currently 30 off through the 20th if you're looking to stock up or try something new link in the description or just code jay got it check out first off we'll talk about one of the biggest issues and this is visibility and audio audio in general is very muted very low nothing like as punchy as that we're used to in war zone and modern warfare and there are some elements that are of that that are good but there's huge inconsistencies and we've been kind of spoiled with what warzone offers um and it's kind of a huge downgrade they've acknowledged this they say they're gonna work on it but they will not be able to give us what that eventually looks like until the game actually drops so i would avoid pre-ordering or i would avoid buying the game in general until you see those changes unless you're just one of those cod fanboy type people where you're gonna buy it anyways no big deal i would hold off so you can at least see what that is before you go ahead and commit to it because they can completely make it worse by flipping it the opposite direction and we'll be in another situation until that gets tuned visibility there are a ton of visibility issues within this vanguard beta especially if you're playing on ps4 or last gen consoles i know xbox had the brunt of it today when i was kind of looking through twitter there was a lot of these clips where the these broken visual bugs i had a visual bugs myself on pc which make absolutely no sense but they are in the game and hopefully they get resolved over time because bugs are a common thing that's why we play the beta not that the whole game's going to change or anything like that it's certain things that only happen when the game's under load there's 14 people on each team and they're doing certain things they're using combinations and streaks and all these variables of course things are expected to break and eventually that's going to happen so there's tons of bugs report those as they come up and try and be as respectful as possible because that's the overall goal is to fix those and then you got to worry about the things that will likely not change and kind of just put that into perspective based off how you're going to enjoy the game so that comes the visual and audio one of the biggest topics that we generally talk about when it comes to call of duty as opposed to other games is skill-based matchmaking being a generally a big issue whether you're on the pro side or against side or whatever i think people have different perceptions of what skill-based matchmaking is what it does and whether or not it's helping the entire player base on general i think on average most people experience better matchmaking because of skill-based matchmaking but there are a percentage that are hurt by it but it is what it is at the end of the day they're trying to get as many people playing the game as possible and call of duty has done that pretty effectively over the past three years even if the games haven't appealed to their core audience but that is what it is right so what that generally means is you're going to have another year of you can't play with friends that have different skill levels so if you're like a 5kd 2kd or whatever you're not gonna be able to play with your 1kd friends they're going to have a terrible time they're going to essentially get bullied the way that skill-based matchmaking works um and then you know so you're gonna have to deal with that so try and find some friends a similar skill level so you can enjoy the game essentially the way it's designed to be played and that is with most players in the lobby having a similar skill level on top of that um mp challenges if you're trying to go for camos are going to be significantly harder within multiplayer because of those aspects if you are a mid to high skilled player because if you're going to go and try and do your pistol challenges somebody is going to be using the stg and the mp40 there's no doubt about it every lobby you're going to run into um and leave until you tank your stats well enough from getting abused from using that pistol that maybe it throws you into a lower bracket but generally you're going to have to deal with that and that is an unfortunate part that that just kind of sucks if you're lower skilled players should be a relatively walk in the park um connection in queue times will generally be a little bit longer just like cold war and mw um but not so bad that it destroys the entire network it is kind of what it is and unfortunately because it's skill-based matchmaking will be as strong as it is it will be exploited by people that know how to exploit it um and there's a lot of content creators in that mix that are gonna go for their game place for entertainment it is what it is they've been doing it for the past three years that is not changing i promise you that's gonna bring us into the philosophy of the game personally i'm against the philosophy which is to have as low as skill gap as possible and they've brought back several elements from modern warfare one of the biggest things that contributes to a low skill gap is a low ttk a very fast ttk because that requires less accuracy if i have poor recoil management but i can get on target because aim assist helps or whatever fire a couple shots i get a kill because aim assist is strong enough but then i don't need to hit him like five times i can hit him twice and i can get a kill and and that is designed specifically that way so that lower skilled players can get kills on higher skilled players and that's just on averages obviously the good is going to tend to stomp on the lower skilled player on average but the with the higher ttk that would happen less often because there would be a gap that's been closed up a little bit so we've seen that and we haven't even seen the the overpowered combinations that will happen as a result of this gunsmith which we'll get to a little bit later and just the concept i was giving is a lot like hardcore game modes where it's like one bullet essentially you've made it so that whoever sees each other first that's who gets the kill and that's it and and that's the whole theory behind having a low ttk so that lower skilled players can benefit from this and this has been explained by devs in the past so this philosophy isn't new and it's not going anywhere because it drives the casual audience to come play the game because they feel like they got a chance and casuals are playing the game they're gonna buy blueprints um which a lot of designs decisions are about money at the end of the day regardless of what you think it is about money driving revenue for activision uh regardless of what the studio wants um the other part that they've included in this is a high flinch mechanic which generally the flinch is going to be high when you're getting shot and then on top of that you're also going to have a high headshot multiplier so what happens is if you shoot somebody in the chest and then they shoot second but they flinched up to your head now they're gonna kill you in two shots instead of three and you're killing them in three because you shot the chest and then eventually what ends up happening is you get two bulleted they get three so even though you shot first you end up dying uh because the flinch kicked the person's head to your head which creates another imbalance but that's purposely designed so you just got to deal with that um they replaced the standard mini map just like mw but now you are able to run a perk which is kind of a crutch perk which puts better players at a disadvantage if they want to run that specific perk because they understand how to use a mini map to its maximum effectiveness i think over people oversimplify what the minimap is if you don't understand the ins and outs of it you are incredibly you're missing out incredibly um and then we got the mounting mechanic obviously mounting is always going to be an issue in these games they've lowered the skill gap if recoil is too hard for you just post up mount up and you will be rewarded with better accuracy in a low ttk game and you're not going to get any of those issues like sprint of fire time tactical sprint of fire aim down sight you are mounted if you see somebody they're dead pretty quickly so that that kind of closes the skill gap and then they put in a bunch of slow animations you throw in your box you getting your ammo from your box you throwing a nade everything has been slowed down to make it so that if somebody is decent if they're gonna have to react it's too late the person who's already standing still aiming down sight playing a little bit more passive will get the kill more often than not just because of the way the imbalance works they'll be able to kill you before you can actually change that animation and that's all built into that that leads to limited play styles in my opinion so i think the overall gameplay loop is a little bit backwards and it makes it a little bit hard to actually play the way you want um and i'll explain that so passive and campy playstyle will dominate because of the ttk and the combination of sprint to fire they've have a pretty fast ttk very similar to mw slightly fat you know slightly slower but still incredibly fast and then they have a sprint of fire time that is ridiculously slow so that if you get sprinting at any time you are likely going to lose a gunfight versus someone who's not sprinting just but inherently so that's going to drive more players to walk instead of run which kind of defeats the points of having these features that aren't balanced properly so that you can manage to do both it's just one will be superior hands down you have the advantage if you're walking over running uh on top of that uh the aggressive um play style will still be doable you'll be able to push spawns there's gonna be clips like where you're gonna be able to go in get some nice little feeds you know you reload get back into it because ttk is pretty low so you'll be able to get in into the action get multiple people dead get a nice feed and then you'll get spawn trap for the next 10 minutes because you can't really break out of that because you can't sprint you have to walk ads like the aggressive play style will be doable but it'll be very inconsistent it'll be be very dependent on how good the players are going up against which again is gonna be rough because of skill-based matchmaking will likely throw you with people that are at least relatively close to the the above average skill level and the switch says kill streaks over score streaks uh d incentivizes anyone to play the objective there's literally no reason to stand on the hardpoint or the patrol point or capture dumb flags other than to win um the match but um what ends up happening is if they don't have any reason to do that at least until maybe they add a perk like pro appointment you're gonna end up struggling to find people that will play the objective in any meaningful way so you're gonna feel like a solo player so you're going to be kind of out of the loop and this has happened again in many call of duty's that focus and emphasize on kill streaks over score streaks and having a balance of both and then you have to run a perk the same way you run the radar it's like why are you penalizing people in the way they want to play so you kind of just force people to play a little bit campy play for their kill streak go on a seven die go on a seven and we'll get to the loopiness streaks too how that's kind of an issue uh right now so you can't streak lap and what that means is you only get one set of streaks per life so if you have a three a four and a five as soon as you go on a five streak you might as well die and restart over you might as well die and restart over every single time you get that streak if you have a 10 kill streak you get up to a 10 um and you get dogs call them in die restart that pattern because eventually this is the same thing mw had and this really limits your ability to play aggressive because you're worried about dying you don't have the awareness from calling in a uav your radar perk isn't all that great or you have to run the radar perk and that ends up leading to a few different issues one is since you can't lap your streaks it makes it a little bit more campy because you got to play your life a little bit more once you get those streaks that's it you know same thing we were talking about kill streaks versus score streaks you end up with some issues there but you also end up having to rely on teammates to call in streaks to have that awareness even if you're going to run that radar perk so if i get on a 17 kill streak and unless i'm trying to go for a nuke which i got a couple so far in this beta you get a 25 streak you have to rely on somebody to call in a uav you have to call you know position and rotate maybe you're gonna have to play in a full squad which ends up bringing that dynamic into it if you play with high-skilled players it's gonna be a little bit imbalanced on how you're gonna have to play the game where you have to go hey can you call in your uav now can you call in your uav now and that ends up breaking the gameplay loop and it really changes how people play because they cannot go out of their way like me being aggressive after i've gotten 12 kills is not going to help me get to my 25 streak playing as passive as it could possibly be because i'm not going to get another uav if i got another five kills and a uav was able to come in or four kills or whatever then it would incentivize me hey you know what maybe i should move around a little bit to try and get those kills so i can get some uav so i can get awareness and that's where the the streak spam comes in so even if they were to limit it to non-lethal kill strikes like the uav counter uav and maybe in advance if they decide to add that in down the road i'd be perfectly fine with allowing those to at least streak so you can have some map awareness and focus on gun play instead of dogs or a flame knot or whatever the heck the case is uh so that brings us to maps so the maps a lot of people have been complaining about the maps you have hotel royal we have gabutu i think that's how it said eagles nas and red star and one of the biggest issues with these maps is the low ttk and i know a lot of people i haven't really seen mention this but a lot of the issues with map design come down to ttk and um specifically the reasons why there are issues is for example on red star you have these big wide open lanes where you're able to see it the square in the middle of the map if you cross that lane the ttk is so fast that you essentially cannot cross the street without being instantly deleted instantly you don't even get a chance to react and there's generally not enough cover for you to slide and get into place or anything like that you cross the street you die which makes those lanes essentially unusable unless you're just going to blindly run in there and keep getting killed so that limits the actual routes and way you have to use the map so it ends up being non-functional also when it comes to gabu 2 the ship has that little area where you can climb up on the top and overlook most of the map and generally get some easy kills unless people can try and wall bang you and i was able to get a nuke just from there i got 25 kills never leaving that area because i was like i'm trying to prove a point that literally you can camp your butt off and you will get a nuke um and that's the way the map is designed especially when we get these little bouncing beds we're gonna be able to put down with restock and the supply box oh man it's going to be broken strats of super camping power positions that are just way too powerful red star has that same issue where you climb up on that top area camped up there easy nuke you're going to get nukes if you camp in this game because all the elements are geared towards camping and pre-aiming because of the things i mentioned earlier so it's really hard to say how good these maps are obviously the spawns are all janky but that's expected in a beta they generally improve over time as long as the philosophy of how the designs are supposed to work follow what they were supposed to um s d looks like it plays well but that's generally a more slower paced mode because you're playing your life you're holding angles that makes sense when you have a respawn game mode where you're trying to get a little bit more aggressive ttk you get penalized really hard if you decide to move instead of just posting up and that's pretty much guaranteed i if you're camping this game you will have a decent kd if you are rushing your kd will be lower than if you camped that's generally the case but it's the difference between that and the other will be be pretty significant when it comes to hotel royal generally if you want to just play that map safe um they've designed it in a way that you should only stay on the roof portion and kind of just do a u-loop back and forth and that's the way you should be playing that map and it kind of limits it because if you go up the middle middle there's way too many angles the long sight lines are off the head glitches where people can mount um so it's impractical if you actually come around the corner the ttk is way too fast you get deleted so it doesn't really allow for movement in those areas without just getting obliterated from somebody who is mounted pre-aiming camping um and that's an unfortunate part of it the other part is the gunsmith so we'll go ahead and talk a little bit more about the gunsmith while looking at the game so the gunsmith ends up having a lot of different issues i was actually able to play with a lot of different weapons i maxed out like five or six weapons fully and then i played a decent amount with other ones but again the gunsmith gives the illusion of choice and the the thing that i've mentioned with modern warfare is it's great they give us 70 attachments that you're going to have all these attachments to go through and unlock and you're going to have like 70 great attachments to choose from but as we know the same thing happened with modern warfare you kind of end up with about two meta options for each weapon or so a lot of weapons will only have one main meta option um but then some weapons like the m4 for example you have like a short range more aggressive build and then you have more of a slower long range build and and you would generally have that which would essentially be two sets of loadouts and that's it um so all these are like a facade right like in reality if some of those attachments overlap and you'll have instead of using 20 full attachments because they're not going to all be different you'll end up probably using about 12 to 15 attachments total for any given weapon out of the 70. so it really gives the illusion of choice by having all this filler on top of that that is really in place to sell blueprints we know that that's going to be the case we're going to go in here you're going to buy a tin attachment stg or eight attachment or whatever the blueprint is going to be and that's what people will be using in warzone that'll give us a good indication of how many attachments are going to be visible in warzone because you're going to be able to have to use that blueprint in warzone as well as the multiplayer so i think that is that portion of it especially when you have stuff that's not really practical even when we take a little bit of a closer look uh there's going to be a lot of stuff that just isn't viable based off mag size and and there's combinations here that like i said will be pretty broken so even though this is a great system in theory in practice it ends up being very flawed a couple different things with that is for example if we go over here and we want to go ahead and look over here we can go ahead and go to overkill and with overkill you aren't limited in any way you're going to be able to combine this with ghosts you can combine this with radar higher alert tracker whatever you want to combine this with and then you get full 210 attachment guns which is even more broken than mw was because at least mw was two five attachment guns now we're talking about two tan attachment guns which is pretty insane considering if you go back to the older system it was like a pick 10 system where maybe you get three attachments on your primary you run a pistol with maybe an extended mag and then you get your three perks a frag and a secondary or you don't run you know frag and a tactical at all so you get an extra attachment there was a little bit of more choice like where you had to think about your options of what you'd prefer if you wanted to run smokes maybe you got to sacrifice your secondary there were like some more key design choices and to run overkill by itself that would take like two attachments slots out of your pick 10 and then now you're like limited on the guns they're not gonna be as overpowered but as time has gone on they've kind of made it so that you don't have to think obviously that part simplifies it but the whole goal is so that people buy blueprints because at the end of the day the whole it's a gimmick to get people to spend money so the the system is like why would they do that the answer is always for more money so if you think about the game that way it kind of explains any decision that you think might not be as good um it's just for money to drive business for casuals and i think this overly complicates it because at the end of the day like i said we'll end up going into a meta where hey this is the build for this and maybe you just change out the optic or the reticle and then if you want to use it a different way this is the build for it and then pretty much we'll have the two builds and that's essentially what's happened within modern warfare and within cold war uh when it comes to uh warzone uh and especially we we haven't even got the chance to see some of these broken combinations like right here you get hollow point which makes it so your extremities don't do less damage usually for most of the modern warfare guns you have your base damage and if you do the limbs it does 10 less damage but this will make it so you don't do 10 less damage and then this one right here focus or vital will make it so that maybe your neck multiplier is larger to the chest so you get a head damage to the chest which speeds up the ttk even more because now you get the head shot damage more frequently which will inevitably lower the ttk one headshot on pretty much all these guns based off the ttks that i've already tracked does lower the ttk which is kind of disgusting um considering that the ttk is already fast but this will allow it so you're going to get insta deleted by a lot of stuff and these combinations we didn't get a chance to try them because everything is capped at level 30. so once the full game comes out don't be surprised if there are a million broken things that just can't be balanced because they decided to pursue money over the simplification of making things balanced so i know i talked about a lot of things in today's video uh now i'll give you kind of like my last thoughts or final thoughts on kind of what's gonna happen with vanguard i think if you were a modern warfare fan like if you just love the game and the gameplay loop you're probably gonna like this one if you didn't you probably won't like this one for me personally i think modern warfare was a generally bad cod if you were decent at call of duty before modern warfare because they lowered that skill gap i i think the exact same things about this and all the problems that existed in that game will essentially exist in this one just differently doesn't mean it's going to be a terrible game it'll just be not necessarily one of my favorite cards and that's perfectly fine because i know that once this integrates with warzone i'm going to enjoy it because warzone tends to solve a lot of the issues that the multiplayer experience has and i'm okay with that cool if people like multiplayer now i'm gonna prefer warzone regardless because it solves a lot of the lower skill gap issues uh because of the engine we're gonna get the anti-cheat we're gonna get fov for console for multiplayer uh we'll see if that transfers over to warzone that the integration should be much smoother because it's gonna have the stats and they'll likely add those stats for all the weapons in the game so hopefully they're at least accurate so we'll have a good idea what is happening unlike when the cold war integration happened where literally nothing was matching and even up until now there are some issues with that integration going on no matter what warzone's gonna be the top dog that is their money grab that they are gonna continue to pursue as long as they possibly can um and invest all the possible resources into it so don't expect anything different that warzone will be the primary supported thing and vanguard is essentially going to be a dlc for war zone um if you are looking to get a head start on warzone i would definitely consider getting vanguard just to grind out the weapons i know i'm doing that i'm not going to enjoy the experience all that much in my opinion long term um but i'm going to grind out all the levels i'm going to do the camo grind if zombies is cool i might go for that zombies camo you only have about three weeks to grind out the game max it out figure out the stuff so that when the integration does happen you'll be good to go and have everything set up so those are my thoughts on vanguard i know some of you agree and some of you won't and that's perfectly fine hopefully you did enjoy the video learned something new if you did please do me a favor hit the like button if you're
