[Music] Montana a sprawling Outdoorsman's Eden with ice covered Peaks and unspoiled Wilderness patrolling and protecting these natural resources is a first class band of Peace Officers these are the wardens dedicated to the preservation of the last best place we have trespassers that have shot something on private property at Wolf a individual trespass on his property shot something he asked them to leave they left for a little bit have returned and are refusing he has his property posted no hunting during big game hunting season trespassing is a frequent nuisance for private land owners but with most territory unmarked and unfenced confusion and chaos is common W stay land what is going on [Music] here [Music] how's it going it's going good how are you I'm doing all right so anyway uh that truck's parked that justed the truck and it's parked on state land or no it's parked on state land right um these guys were up here behind your house behind the house okay and uh they came down over here and I confronted one of them over by the road and I says you know you know um you're on private property this is state land I say you go out there and have fun on state land but um my wife is she was back there hiking uhhuh and I don't want people with guns back there did you can you see them from your house or no no no they're up over behind the trees in that Canyon up there but they're on they're on your place uh my property line goes all the way up to the tree line and um when I told the guy I said this side is all the way down this private property M um he he yelled up to um the fellow that was up there he says Dad it's private property where you are and he goes okay and they moved on and they went up the hill and picked up their truck came back down and walked straight back up there again with a whole cart full of all kinds of stuff and I just I'll go down and have a look and then we'll see what they've done and then I'll call you and tell tell you what they've done and then you can decide what you want done near Great Falls Warden Brett Logan is patrolling popular grounds at the peak of hunting season today's the second day of the general deer and Elk rifle season so we have deer elk analou Upland Bird games waterfoul just about everything black bears open so we're in full swing of hunting season how we doing well looks like we're successful this morning not me not you huh did you get one no it it was my cousin your cousin got one all right every year we see oh do you I wish I could remember you I will this time I will this time sure you see a ton of people yeah you got one huh yep good where'd you get it at uh we got it I don't know the name of the place is brand oh good good A lot of people up there today pretty quiet good usually opening morning anybody usually opening morning can get kind of [Music] wild the truck that went through the gate over here I told him not to go because I own land up here I bought some land from Mr Peterson he 40 acres behind him there's a truck that told me they were going to the state property I said dude you cannot but we got permission from so and so he told me he had permission from Mr Higgins I'm not and uh the license plate was Bravo and it was two young kids in a blue truck just recently yeah I bought maybe about an hour ago and I told him I said Somebody's renting that state property and you need his permission to get on that property and then they didn't know where it was I haven't seen anybody but not cuz supposedly nobody's supposed to be up there so I don't you know I just want if that's where y had come from no I haven't been up there yet so I don't know all right okay sir well y'all be safe think you have a good one find these guys let us know we'll track them down all righty sir thanks yes sir down the road from Brett Logan the Streamlight Spotlight shines back on Warden Brian goalie he continues to investigate a landowner's claim that two trespassers have harvested a deer on his property how goes the bath is that all you have is a deer big oldo won you just lift her up and there you go do you have just a bag permit or what yeah we have B for what district okay and do you know where you're at what makes you think that just just just [Music] checking okay have you ever heard of hunting District 4 or 423 uhhuh I thought that you know what the boundary is lion's Creek and the creek down here so you know where you are now you're in 423 okay he's not going to jail no we don't take people to jail for that but I could see why you're concerned but don't be that concerned all [Music] [Music] right how we doing so again oh boy I tell you what I've been there my myself you got filing wardens yeah we are nice out and about today cool so how see getting anything not very much no it's pretty thin he came up this [ __ ] there was one little Spike came out of here that was it huh one little ladyy yeah huh well that's how it goes sometimes they get the best of you especially me I don't hunt very good [Music] you Warden Brian goalie is dealing with a TR pass situation where a father and son were hunting what they thought was state-owned land without fences they inadvertently found themselves on private property so you really made some mistakes here today I I really don't like to write kids tickets you know that I got to what I got to do is go down and talk to the land owner really quick and find out what he wants done you understand that understand and if he doesn't want to charge you I'm okay with with that but you realize you shot the deer in the wrong area I do now all right and you realize that's like that's kind of a serious deal um I don't want to see your boy lose his what's your first name Sean and I don't want to see Shawn have any problems with his deer you understand that um I don't know what what I'm going to do about the license yet so we'll work on it here and Ne by the time we get down to the truck um so why don't you guys start pull and I'm going to start seeing if I can work this out you understand so start pulling down the hill and we'll get her [Music] handled elsewhere in Region 4 Warden Quinn CA has received an unusual tipmont call and Brett Logan has responded to a request for backup I have them stopped need your help Bon cuka called and uh told us that she'd gotten a tipm of a car broken down on the interstate and two young men field dressing deer on the side of the road which is highly abnormal usually when a hunter harvests his animal he field dresses it right there on the [Music] spot um they were gutting these animals out there's two bags right here right here those two bags right there are full of uh gut piles they said that they harvested them over by the Cascade colony and then I think their truck broke down here and they gutted them out here that's weird so their dad's picking them up and I said well we're going to take these animals and take take them back to kill site and the older one in the black said he's the one who's driving he knows the way so he's going to take you exactly where he knows he's describing it but we could save oursel a trip and call their Bluff or what did they have them tagged yeah and I'll show you the too so here's the little brothers his is pretty good but the older brother and there's no blood on them they were tank when I stopped they were own them yeah they're in my they're definitely getting a story together for sure while the wardens continue to discuss the case Brett Logan suddenly realizes that his morning Patrol might have turned up more than he previously thought hey Quinn I know where the I know where they killed him so we went up wegan Park Road a while ago yeah up Carl ta's place and I have that license plate they were trespassing up that road the license plate was Bravo and it was two young kids in a blue truck there's a sign that says no trespassing past this point they were past that said they were looking for state land and had permission and the guy I said nobody has permission to hunt up there they have to trespass to get to that state line so you already talked to him today no I talked to a guy that was looking for him and he gave us their plate and said two guys in a truck [Music] okay Warden goalie's investigation into the trespassing father and son is wrapping up with a suitable ending for all parties H this one okay the land owner was very nice and has decided not the Press trespass charges against the kids so that's very good and that was his choice so he understands that he's a new Hunter and he made a mistake and I'll work it out with him on the wrong license and I can see how they'd make that mistake but at the same time when they start adding up like that you got to do something I don't know what but before we can wrap up this case goalie's busy day continues with an urgent call from another land owner hold on I got to go I want you to put that back on when you get down there and I want you to call me yes sir and we're going to work this out tonight all right sir okay you okay you have questions you feel bad it's not the end of the world okay we're just a little bit off you understand it was just a mistake we we make mistakes when we're hunting and it's how you handle it deter how your future of hunting is going to go you understand that so this is your deer it's a minor mistake you're in the wrong hunting District you didn't trespass that far and I understand why you did what you did cuz it's not marked now you guys you need to concentrate getting down here so you can get hurt and I would help you I would stay and help you but I got a really serious call got a serious call and you'll call me later absolutely okay we got to go [Music] near Cascade Montana warden's Quinn CA and Brett Logan question Hunter's gutting deer on the shoulder of the interstate this officer just going to visit with you real quick come on this way all right let's get out of the wind man I just received a tipmont call that a witness was driving Northbound on the interstate um he saw these two kids F dressing some deer in the Barrow pit right off the interstate he he thought that was unusual So I responded um their their Blazer had broke down there's two me deer the gut piles are both right here um it's just unusual that you would do it in not the location that you harvested the animals they obviously were trespassing somewhere otherwise you'd leave a gut Pile in the field armed with Warden Logan's eyewitness report it doesn't take long for the young Hunters to come forward with the [Applause] truth okay so actually need talk to you yeah let's let's do this let's start over with the truth okay because you guys were called in earlier because you don't have landowner permission where you killed these okay so like right yeah well the reason I lied in the first place was cuz first time we went hunting by ourselves without her dad first time you let us he I understand that we didn't know if it was stat line or not cuz it was not fenced off so okay but we we clearly know that you guys trespassed and so we'll just go from there you know it's not a big deal and and L's just going to get you more more trouble that's why I decided to change for so you um you have two illegal animals one's yours one's your brother's and you're in possession of them under Montana law the illegally harvested deer are seized by the wardens where they'll be donated to a local food bank I'm writing a um Citation for failed to obtain landowner permission which is a $135 Bond on it and then I compensated both bucks um he kind of had a guilty conscience and came clean they've been in trouble before and they know the repercussions so he decides to be honest at the last minute and I'm going to ride him and take his deer and sometimes that's hard enough on a guy to take their deer away I think it's unfortunate though that they don't even get to eat them or they don't get to do anything with them they're illegal so we put them in a freezer and we'll donate them to the food bank but they don't have a good story to tell they don't have a good memory they don't have a deer on their wall cuz it got taken away so hopefully they can learn and they can learn true sportsmanship and then go back out and be proud of an animal someday but they don't have those skills right [Music] now Warden Brian goalie has already had a teachable moment with a young trespassing Hunter and is now rushing to intercept another violation occurring nearby in Region 4 they got a guy that shot a bull elk yesterday on the on the North Lions Creek on the oconnell Block management today he took a quad runner up there to get the elk out and got the quadr runner stuck in a criek and another Hunter came by and said you can't have quadr Runners up here and he said I don't give a what the landowner said I'm doing what I want so that's the kind of people we want to go get well goalie makes his way to the call he learns that the suspect with the ATV has already loaded up and left the property now it's a race to catch up with [Music] him there they are now I can see [Music] them hello hello what's going on some kind of story you guys got huh uh no we got a good one no so I got a complaint that there was a Quadrunner and a creek stuck yeah yeah that's and that there was an elk yeah I retrieved the rest of my elk okay yes last night we come up here I'm helping my brother out okay and uh he uh needed some help he called me up in Great Falls and he said could you give me a hand he got an elk okay so the elk was in way back in there okay and you guys know you're not supposed to take four-wheelers in there yeah when we when we who was the guy that said to the hunter that we don't give a what the landowner says about we never said that he didn't say that okay good no no all right that that's um the deal was some some hunter called the landowner the landowner called me yeah oh really yeah now it's your hunting right do you have the rest you have your hunting license U eggs on it get tag off there real quick and have a look at it and you're going to have to take this out I want to look at it okay so sorry did you guys drag it through the criek or something yeah well you have to get it up to the truck we hooked the truck up to it we never cross that no motorized vehicle so okay smells all right I'll be right with you goalie attempts to reconnect with the land owner but is unable to reach him okay so you got it yesterday at was what time 810 okay 10 after 8 exactly were you with anybody else no I was alone and that's the only elk that died up there that day yep well for now you're definitely going to get a ticket for driving off the road okay that's what's going to happen today um I'm guilty of that yeah first of all number one I can write you a $500 fine for what you just did because you violated the criminal trespass rules of the state of Montana by entering and remaining on private property in violation of being told you can't drive it there and in violation of what's written there which means you can be charged for Criminal Trespass what I'm writing you is 876 415 which is hunt without landowner permission you did not have the landowner's permission to take that Quadrunner in there the landowner filed the complaint not me do you understand that I I didn't so I could have called up the Bungalow and asked for permission to retrieve that you could have and should have well yeah that's what I should have did so you see how basic that is yeah so all the stuff we're going through is a waste of time but guess who created it I did okay so as long as you accept the responsibility and you take care of this we're going to be fine having resolved the ATV issue quickly Warden goalie is able to return to the father and son and complete what he started okay my man here's a written warning you're good to go if anybody stops you at a check station you show them that yes sir see you next time thank you very much under good circumstances yes sir be careful get the boys out don't let this stop you he's a good kid I could tell but description okay and who's this you mind that if I ask okay Don I'm heading that way all right got a hot one somebody shot an elk up on some private property we just got to go check it out and see private road Joe cic is careful to check all the exiting vehicles for signs of a harvested animal I don't see a w te in the back of it oh Richie huh we're going to go find this dead elk that guy that just passed us we've charged him with three felonies and uh he's a real bad poacher I didn't see the elk in the back of the truck I didn't see any blood on the back of it either how's it going today pretty good pretty good any luck no luck none huh to some up on Thorton Ridge but oh really yeah though I heard I heard I just ran into demur up there hunting and uh he said that there's some Utah guys down here blasting away on L how where at did you get a call on there yeah I did I didn't see anybody oh okay yeah he didn't say he didn't say where they he just said down on lus coming up the road there's no truck that's past me no Jeep or anything that's you're you're it huh yeah yeah all right well that sounds good I'll uh see what's going on then all right take care you too we got here was up there okay you didn't shoot an elk nobody got any guns in here no okay well I'm just you can be straight and I'll be straight with you okay don't need to get all Hasty and I'm just following up owner calls me and says you need to get up here right now where something bad's going on I guess I better get there yeah I was going to let you know uh I have a little bit of a shootout up here at Dead Man's road with a bunch of elves so a shootout describes a situation where a large herd of animals is being targeted by multiple Hunters it's not only dangerous but it can lead to overlimit violations and wounded animals back in Region 2 Warden CI continues to pursue an alleged poacher Don hey hey I must have missed that rig somehow do you know what way it went yeah it went right down the dra check pies of it heading out and was racing out of there right down the modesty Creek with greenage just left about 5 minutes ago me just passed our place God dang it I didn't see it it turns out there were two one was a crew gr crew the other one was Su okay well I'll stop him then if I can catch up to him again all right thanks a lot you byebye let me uh I'll have to call for some backup here now I think it's in that Jeep Cherokee it's brown and should be coming out of modesty Creek okay thanks guys hey man can I look in the back of your rig you got an somebody said they saw this rig with the El getting loaded in it that can't be is it no nothing in there huh no all right so is there another SUV up there no nothing huh no all right well then something's something's gone ay here well I appreciate you stopping anyways you didn't see anybody else up there then no there's nobody P me either so but there was the uh two guys that walked in as I was walking walking out okay well I guess that's where I got to go now this is this is crazy what a mess while Brian goalie's Pursuit doesn't appear to be as confusing there is urgency all right I'm here are you over the top there's a they're shooting was out there on the very edge of state land if on state land [Music] right they're coming over the fence they just wiped that fence [Music] out I couldn't stop I could not stop these zel from going across the road they were committed all right I'm just I'm looking for wounded [Music] ones it's the peak of elk hunting season in Montana and Region 4 Warden Brian goalie is observing a large group of hunters on state land so far everything is by the book but a simple misunderstanding can change everything we got a bow right here in a cow up there and another big bull up there is a STI landed here uh kind of right on the edge where these elkar is not state land back there is goes right across the road just like this we're right mle that state land I got it on my GPS talk I don't know why you got to talk to me that way these aren't your elk I didn't say they were your guys tried to turn them back on this in this conversation just relax you guys relax your s to me with the fbom who are you that's not good who are you who I know who you are and I know who you think you are that's your guys cut these elk off of that calm down you guys calm down his driveway they did his Drive he might Jeremy what what is what's wrong with him I don't know is he just adrenaline going on or probably well he's screaming at us and I can't figure out what's going on oh something about these are his elk and he can hunt wherever he wants I don't understand what's going on you got her I've got to ask him a kind question I'm going to use word pleas okay I was really excited at this opportunity it's caught me off guard by what you said will you please not start your sentences with the f word to me you won't get getting my conversation I respect that I was sit and talking to I I respect that was that you thumbed your nose in the landowner's face you you shot your elk and nobody's going to tell you what to do I can see but that's publiction and I guess we have to guard this is in Block management there's 18,000 AC how can they buy state land no they didn't so I'm legal yes you are you're fine yeah nobody said you weren't I mean I just went down you were the only one I'm you went from this to that and you know who did it you did partially with the f bomb anyway I it just didn't need to happen from either side so now it's over okay get your Oak enjoy it have a beer see you later that's what El [ __ ] does makes you wild far as I can see everything went okay all the YK they're dead next on wardens this still a goose chase does this have Utah plates or what if you can see an elk stopping for Warden Joe cek a long day investigating a poached elk has turned into evening with a biting winter weather beginning to grip Region 2 a call from a sheriff's deputy might be the good news he's been looking for he's uh heading down towards the FR road right now does this have Utah plates or what that's it you guys walked on to the C what up this still a goose chase if you can see an elk [Music] stopping how's it going should everybody too bad how you doing Joe campit game warden so what tell me what happened here went up um okay you know how that road got closed off for years then when they got access to it I'm way up there I went way up on top of the hill I shot this this animal it ran down I went and tracked it went and grabbed it gutted it out on the pile threw it in the truck we came back so with all the witnesses that were here and saw what happened here is that what they're going to tell me because that's not what I'm hearing I know where you gutted it and I know where you drove off the road to go get it too yeah so that was a no no so you knew going up that road with take going off the road see that's the issue that we're having here is we're trying to keep that road open so the people can access those lakes and do all that and then people drive off the road that gives them the ammunition to shut it down okay that was not a good move okay well I'm going to look at this animal all right sure all right the tag is on that it's a b yeah I see that and there's a there's the thing everything was taken care of were you kind of in a hurry Garrison we're trying to get out of there as soon as possible cuz it was like really coming down how many bullet holes are in this elk uh two all right well you you know you knew the property was was off limits that's off limits that was where we were at where this died yeah oh yeah you told me that you knew that modesty Creek Road was was close was that whole you you knew the whole story because you're from here yeah so you knew whose property that was yeah but we were up on that Hill there was no there was no no trespassing no okay first of all there don't have to be second of all there was you drove through them all where it says stay on Main Road for the next however many miles all right you've been good about it um there's a couple of of ways we can go here um I'm going to think about it I'm going to try to give you the benefit of the doubt here um you are going to receive a citation this is my first elk ever shot period well unfortunately um it's going to come with a citation I have to take it okay you have to take it mhm um is that private land or no that's what I'm telling you it's way private land yeah well it's cold out here if you guys want to sit it in your pickup for a minute I'll be I'll be right with you all right he almost got away he almost tricked us he did a lot of things wrong um there signs going up the modesty Creek Road saying stay on the road don't get off it's private land mostly it's for accessing there's several Lakes back there that are really good fish in lakes so he decides he's going to go up the road and go hunting well when a five-point bull runs out in front of somebody sometimes they lose their mind so he thought he'd roll the dice and shoot it knowing that it was private property and then the next big thing he did wrong was he drove way off the road and any landowners especially now that it started raining it started snowing getting wet um you know starting to rut up things it's not a good situation and and that doesn't help the fight here okay you were really good about it you were respectful um you screwed up all right now here's here's what I did I could charge you with criminal trespass since that road is marked okay I'm not going to do that went with a hunting without landowner permission okay now that being said this is just a disclaimer um and I'm not going to go pursuing it or anything but if the landowner decides that you know the the damage to the ground he wants to pursue that that would be up to him but I'm not going that way right now okay so what I'm going to do is I'm going to back up to this rig and we're going to slide her on in my truck okay going to the prison I guess it'll go to the food bank in Deer Lodge so you fed the that's a exactly right he's caught he's going to pay a fine and uh hopefully we can still continue to keep that road open for for sportsmen to access those legs but they got to understand that El [ __ ] just isn't going to happen there
