their adventures which Nana always began in here on this island it's called Walker's que a natural jewel set in the richest angeling waters in the northern Bahamas chief anger is flip palette guide teacher and official keeper of the Walker Chronicles [Music] unhhhh walkers were tales of high angling adventurer served with every meal the new breed gathers to trade stories planned trips and defeat a rich tradition of spoken history hair flip palette gives a detailed account of his latest probe into sport fishings expanding world of light tackle 12 left and kind of looks like the head they think so I believe this [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] what do you think you think gotta go somewhere else it's getting pretty hard to see you you know I'll tell you well let me go ahead and pull down this anyway let me just pull this thing a little piece of shoreline because that efficient on the point there yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah he's not bothered is he at all no not a bit should we throw a fly out of me thing yeah I can't get one quiet yeah yeah when that's a big I'm not even breathing then I'm not even breathing wait great eyes great eyes he's facing to the right for sure [Music] if it's a job put my stress buddy [Music] that's a definite chunk of meat right yourself those are he's off he's off he thinks of teeth I couldn't believe it took yellow look what he did to the weed guard on this flight straightened it completely out my guess he did and the fish so big would take a little bitty fly like this it's just astounding to me a fish that clearly was in triple figures sighs I'm still shaken and thank goodness that you said gee let's just pull about 20 feet down that shoe like dirty what just see what's in it see one of your trained tarpon we could send him back into position tell me Berkeley Island come back around again that was awesome that was absolutely awesome [Music] flip palette is going back into places so secret and so wild that they're known only to a handful of poachers smugglers and fishing places hot enough to fire him in the daytime but impossible to leave at night and flips waited for the dawn more than once with dumb Danelle odds or professional guide though it's their day off they're headed for the office there's no matter I always come home vanya both were born in Miami an unlikely doorstep to one of the great wildernesses in North America [Music] today flick travels by airboat where once he walked as a boy across the Great Sawgrass prairies wide as the sky and alive with deer and black bear Panther and alligator flip once marched to a more insistent cadence known as nine-to-five and like many of us he struggled to stay in step then one day he had a long talk with himself threw away his business suit came home to the Everglades and there's no place quite like it a river of grass sighing in the sweet Florida wind vast changing remote and never wholly No [Music] though its borders are crowded by the great urban Leviathan it still calls to those who love it and I was treachery for those who don't in a way the Everglades is the mother of us all our past living in the present as her flip palette and John denelle often go to meet their own histories and for them the ticket back is fishing [Music] you know I've been trying to figure out what this Pelican is doing here John he is catching something in there go get him and if you see any tarpon let me know flip mark right here right on this point right off the dead tree right off the dead tree okay okay I see I see him I see him do nice Casper they're moving to the right flip no no no they're going back to the left again or going in circles I need to get us oh well wonderful wonderful wonderful oh boy Oh get him buddy he still he's dying eat that go back go go go I'm gonna try to get you back down long okay okay Oh John I don't know no go ahead I'm sorry no no don't worry about me Manzo come here Chris job johnson l you've got eyes i can't even believe he is getting ready to go nuts like an electrical arm the first run of the tarpon quickens the pulse and puts the angler on notice [Music] because the tackle is like the connection between anger and fish is strong maybe coming up here and the level of life seldom gets higher at either end of the line get slime back yes so near yet so far I'm not getting old are you yes it's the calendar what I never saw that coming ready I'm going to grab these gloves out I'm down for second groaning and popping through the guides flips carefully tied leader knots are tested against the combined force of the Tarpons weight strength and leverage Oh [Music] popped him off I think I was playing them too close [Music] for flip the disappointment of the lost tarpon quickly dissolves as a swallow-tailed kite describes freedom more eloquently than the finest poets finest touch and though flip has never been caught speaking verse he has a poet's heart for most everything in the Everglades favorite tree of this cabbage palm the sable poem right here you know that's the it's really a sable palm in the old time Floridians call them cabbage palms and it's right up there high on that palm where those boots stick out just under the green leaves if you were to open that tree up magically somehow there would be the heart of the palm tree right in there and that's the animal that has to die that whole tree has to die before somebody can eat hearts of palm oil or salad [Music] [Applause] [Music] a little later thoughts turned back to fish and fishing you know I'm anxious to catch one of these things and show you something fellow from it's been a lot of time fishing in the Everglades showed me a way to hold the snuke that actually paralyzes them have you ever seen that where you know by the jaw no no you lay them you lay them in the palm of your hand on their side just like this and kind of drape them over hand they'll lay there till they die just walk like behind just right boys yeah PEC fins are incredibly just lays there and lays there no neat boy would be a great way to handle them let's see if we can find a big one well we're gonna get a big one get a great big while John conducts their busman's tour with his push Pole flip probes the pockets of the mangroves the dark tangle layers of the snook one of the Everglades most honorary game fish nice chaos [Music] [Applause] [Music] with each cast flip pushes the clatter and ring of the city back a little farther while overhead another kite rides the freshening wind [Music] [Music] right look at this oh right nice snook left good job buddy good job list I'm gonna just work your way okay watch your rod what you wrought okay coming up boy that's a nice guest nice fish foot good work just happen what happened that was great the way you moved me offshore there with three fish flip maybe there I'm love the see him come out of trees like that what he just appeared ready oh yeah on his side it's got to be on the side that's it try the Vulcan snook really works it really works it's the funniest thing I've ever seen of our life can lay there for a month that is that's how believable that is a crab is incredible how do you come up with all this I don't know I it's man it is amazing the walking stick grab paralyzes with the Star Wars technique properly demonstrated flip and John begin their slow laps back in time how this there's no word of three years old hey Rico there we go nice fish Oh beautiful redfish is what that is a dandy this is a dandy dandy redfish this is a really good each one Fisher [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah released from the pressure to find fish for their clients these two men who have been exploring the glades since their boyhoods slowly approached the shoreline of their youth and the years fall away like autumn leaves until even their speech echoes that of a couple of other American kids named Tom and Hut [Music] good stuff good stuff for flip mallet who has set numerous World Records and banked enough game fish for a dozen angling lives the edge had never dulled boy that dark mysterious look at water I'm just for the heck I'm gonna give you one more flick backwards here Yeti plays each fish nut with the heart of a predator but with a deep appreciation for its place in the natural world well it was pretty nice job we can do this [Music] that would be flat that is amazing now take this now take this way take the jig out everything would have persecuted why don't know where he came from just out of the gloom there well have what two o'clock over here through that what is that what is it a moccasin that's a rattlesnake he's got that mask across the front of this you know don't ask on the front of your face and put a pretty snake Google markings on what could he be doing out here what could he be eating out here in these measures oh no oh boy how high he is in the water beautiful they're not great swimmers though are they look now he's really tired yeah boy he knows where home is well you like a big dot or a little small Diamondback I thought it might be a big picture what are you a herpetologist I don't have any idea what kind of fly to use for us absolutely maybe a mouse a palace they're not the other big mouth more tarpon action coming up [Music] [Music] flippin John move farther up the shark River one of the main arteries of the Everglades their destination tarpon Bay [Music] and with each twist in time they probe deeper into a wilderness with so many islands they stopped counting at 10,000 no one can claim full knowledge of the Everglades not flip or John nor all those who have lived here not the hunters trappers rumrunners poachers of just plain folk each gets to know a share of it but in time each has to bow to it Sun conquerable nature full of light and mystery follow your thumbs neck three right here what all these open come look at that with all those airplane sent now Wow look at I'm doing what's a pretty not I was like the way it comes out I don't know why I haven't used it I've always used that Hufnagel this is just makes a lot of sense I've always used this on it and it's easy and quick to tie this is the one that pulls off pulls off real straight and it's a hundred percent not real tight [Music] the improved blood knot is soon put to use yeah I'm sorry I'm turnable I think she's moving the left little bit he's still laying right there feel them okay right about there so he's laid up okay now here oh you see math usable a little more to the left flap just a hair a
