jake again with bond performance just wanted to do something a little bit different for today's video i get a lot of questions from uh enthusiasts and customers who are wanting to know what tools i recommend things like torque wrenches specialty tools so i'm just going to kind of walk you through some of the stuff that i keep in my box and some of the things that maybe a weekend warrior who doesn't work on volkswagens all the time wouldn't think to have that can really help you out in the pinch and some things are definitely you know 100 percent required for working on these cars so let's take a look i realized that um a lot of you guys aren't going to be doing this kind of stuff on a regular basis so the the most common question is torque wrenches um my biggest thing is just to make sure that you have torque wrenches that are going to cover the range that you're working in so really ideally you're going to need three this is 3 8 drive craftsman it'll do 25 to 250 inch pounds and it's also got newton meters on the back but you can do that conversion on google or manually ideally this would be quarter inch drive because for something this small radian wise you're not going to break it with quarter inch so actually the smaller on your small torque wrench the better i've had this one for about 20 years um not real commonly used especially these days but good to have in the box next size range up cobalt and it is going to run from 20 to 100 foot pounds now for most installs this is going to be your most commonly used size you want to make sure that when you use a torque wrench you always set it to its lowest setting and never always spun down to where it's mechanically bottomed out that'll help it retain its calibration which you can also check yourself there's youtube videos on that or you can send them out to be tested yearly or however often that you see fit but the most important thing with a torque wrench is to use it in the middle of its range so if i was going to torque something to a hundred foot pounds i would move up to this one snap-on up into this one because the torque range is from 50 to 250. so you always want to try and fall in the middle of the range because that's where it would be most accurate um if you're maxed out at 100 or even worse all the way at the bottom of the scale it um it can have an effect on how accurate it is the biggest concern with me and i've had friends do it in the past using something too big it's very easy to overshoot your torque like if you throw an adapter to put a smaller socket on here and you're trying to do something right at the very bottom of the scale 50 foot-pounds the difference between 50 and you know 70 foot-pounds is probably a degree or two on a little fastener so just keep that in mind moving on i get i've got several questions on power tools there are tons of cheap options out there but i really can't speak highly enough of milwaukee um the biggest thing being that they've got two styles of batteries the m12 which there isn't one in this m18 in here literally anything battery powered you can think of you can get in milwaukee and they don't just change the battery design so i can take my neighbor's 12 year old m18 swap it on here and it works great i want to say this is good for 1200 foot-pounds this is an expensive piece i wouldn't just recommend everybody run out and grab that you're probably going to be able to do everything you want with this and while these are snap on there you know snap on all over this is actually pittsburgh so just harbor freight i have completely annihilated these before but the good news is they're like 20 bucks and they've got a warranty so don't think and you have to go out and spend big money on something like this to get a job done but i would recommend spending a little bit more than you might originally think you're comfortable with on this this is the milwaukee stubby 3 8 impact and it is awesome the most used power tool in my arsenal and it weighs two pounds and it will put out up to 250 foot pounds where i was at lowe's this morning and looking at the cobalt that a customer buddy of mine had considered and i talked him into this instead we'll only do 150 foot pounds max and it weighs 7 pounds so when you're under the car especially you guys that aren't on a lift on jack stands where you've already got t-rex arms having a lightweight tool is ideal plus this compact size this little guy's fitting places that the big one could never dream of going so it's a good future proof investment to get into a milwaukee tool especially if uh if the first one you buy is kind of in a combo pack where you get a charger that will do both batteries the batteries are expensive but once you have them they uh like i said they'll work in in tons of different applications and yeah that one's it will actually charge it but they charge really fast this might actually be charged in the time it takes me to finish this video um that's another great thing about this so moving back to ratchets um these craftsman ratchets have only really ever been used as hammers i mean this thing belongs in the trash it's got maybe like 12 teeth where this has 88 so if you value your time at all i'd pick up at least a quarter inch drive and a 3 8 drive ratchet from from a reputable a real tool company mac snap-on or even like the pro line of tools from craftsman or uh harbor freight's got icon you want something with a higher tooth count this is okay but generally with something like a big breaker bar style ratchet you're not in a tight spot but for stuff like this especially with the flex head definitely worth its weight in gold and this is a longer ratchet but for quarter inch drive stubby is where it's at if it's if it's something that you're using quarter inch on you can usually use this choked up like this and that'll be all the torque you need you don't need to get wild on stuff like that so moving on if you're using impact you should be using impact sockets um i'm super guilty of using chrome but you definitely want to keep especially your eyes in mind i've seen chrome sockets come apart and when they do they usually don't just crack they basically disintegrate so you get shrapnel flying everywhere i've dug trapping a lot of friends limbs before from chrome sockets breaking from us misusing them so just keep that in mind there really isn't a big price difference and you can use impact sockets where you use chrome but not necessarily the opposite direction so these are actually cheap impact sockets from harbor freight my harbor freight jack stands were traded in on these and the rails that they are on are straight off amazon but they are made in america and i'm super happy with that so i'll be buying more of those but i'm out of room in the boxes so there's going to be a new toolbox coming at some point i'm still debating on what i want to get but i want a tool cart to wheel around out here on the floor with me and not be walking back and forth all the time now it is nice i've got all this room here i've probably got like 10 or 12 feet between the front of the mark 7 in my box so i want to have something i can drag right under there with me which again if you're just doing this you know weekend warrior i wouldn't be too concerned about that as long as you've got some place to put your tools where you know where they are you can actually find them you don't need to get crazy with uh tool storage so i'm speaking of amazon i just picked these up these are gearwrench triple squares and every time i do a big job if there's something i wish i'd had i hurry up and order it before i forget because uh i'm sure you're like me and you've got a lot more going on than just your car hobby so this set has quarter inch drive 3 8 drive stubby where i did my s38 install i had these longer sockets which become even longer when you reduce them down their half inch drive so i was able to get it done fortunately but the stubbies would have been ideal allen sockets these are also year inch this is what sold me on spending 35 on these where i could have got a cheaper brand for less i use these on almost a daily basis and they're showing nowhere which is awesome because they're about three years old the six millimeter allen is what mark seven downpipes use and like i said it looks brand new and i use it i've probably done 100 and some odd downpipe installs so um it's worth its weight in gold to spend a couple bucks more you can see these are showing a little bit of wear and they're six months old so definitely worth a little bit extra money for gear inch and again if you're gonna buy ratcheting wrenches spend the extra couple bucks and get gear wrench i've got some cheaper ones from craftsman i've had for probably 15 or 20 years and the head on the ratcheting mechanism on the craftsmen are so big and bulky that they really don't fit anywhere where you need them so um to spend a little bit more and have something actually useful so definitely the way to go oddball stuff like this this is a high offset wrench this is what you'd use for like strut mount assemblies remember anytime you have a specialty bit or fastener you're not applying torque to those those are only for holding so to have an impact and half inch drive is really kind of silly because you would never ever ever use an impact on a specialty bit as a definite no unless it's something that you're going to just throw away just the other day i use those to remove and replace some hardware on a sway bar the customer had a little bit of trouble putting it on so we threw new hardware on for them and i use those for that but that's probably the only time i'll ever use the impact with those strut spreader whether you are going about the by the bookway like i do for suspension installs or the two by four method that some people use either way you need a good strut spreader um this thing's done dozens of installs it's schwaben from ecs i'm sure there's other companies that make them but you definitely want to have one of these in the box you'll have a really hard time without it getting more in depth with stuff that you probably don't need but is super nice to have this is for the rubber isolators on the exhaust the ones back at the suitcase muffler if you've ever taken them apart you'll agree with me they suck from a longevity standpoint you'll never hurt them but they're horrible to get off without the correct tool i've had this thing forever too this is for clamps volkswagen likes to use those specialty clamps everywhere this locks into place so you can open them up slide them back and you can just set this wherever and have room to work and not worry about them shooting across the shop and hurting you for twerking things like strut mounts these are what's called a crow's foot and turn 90 degrees to the tool like this they have no effect on your torque so if you have something sticking off the torque wrench in the fashion of a lever it will affect the torque but if you're at 90 degrees it cancels out so just keep that in mind if you're ever using anything like that but i highly recommend that when you do suspension installs you stay away from these and manually torque them properly it'll save you a ton of headaches so there's just a quick run through i didn't want to get too long-winded on this try and keep it relevant to what the weekend warrior would be doing if you guys want me to do a follow up and get more in depth if i talk too much let me know subscribe if you haven't i'm up uh over a dozen subscribers a month on average if we could like quadruple that that'd be awesome but i really appreciate it guys like comment below and thanks for watching
