hey there this is john hanny i'm a voice teacher and the author of the amazon bestselling book uh teaching contemporary singing and today i'm going to be analyzing and reacting to morset amman and the song is hold on a key i need my glasses people akin kanalang i'm sure that's not right but it'll have to do okay so uh i i have not heard her sing i've heard many great things i've been asked a lot to to do a uh reaction video to more set so here we go and oh camera's here this is the first time i've done a live performance critique the life performance of someone on a bus so there's a first for [Music] everything wish 107.50 [Music] my [Music] i love the the breathy texture she's using and the fact that she's able to keep a core of energy in the sound it's it's not pure breath it's not weak you can tell that she has the ability to lean into it uh whenever she can and even just that little swell on that last note shows you that she's in control of this breathy sound she's not doing it because that's the only way she can sing [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] oh i love that little uh release that she did there so she's going into this really really beautiful example of mixed voice there's different names for it that voice teachers will use but essentially uh between the the lower register the chest voice it's often called or the upper register the head voice there's this area where you need to blend between the two and it's really tricky to do singers spend a lot of time learning to do this and very often what happens in a less skilled singer is they'll either bring their lower register up too high and they start to shout or the voice will will flip and fall apart and what she's able to do is use a really nice mix so that the voice sounds seamless but then she's able to let it go a little bit into a lighter headier more towards the head voice production there at the end so or the last part i played for you i'm going to take that back a little bit and and show you that where she goes light it's really skillfully done it's very musical and she's not letting go there because of a lack of technique she's making a musical choice [Music] [Applause] then back to a nice mix then nice and breathy [Music] nice riffs [Music] [Applause] foreign if i'm pronouncing it correctly but i'm assuming that's it i can hear the bit of the ah she's keeping a little bit of uh underneath that so it has some depth and richness one thing great singers will do is they'll play with the shades of the vowel to make it brighter make it darker make it richer make it thinner and she's keeping a bit of the uh in in it to create a little more depth and richness and you can feel that if you put your finger on your adam's apple there and you say you'll feel that little drop on the uh what it does is it just your vocal tract this tube that the sound waves go through it just makes it a little longer and when it's a little longer it brings out lower frequencies it brings out a little more of the bass in her voice and you can hear that on the on the ah there's a little bit of uh under it yeah she's got she's got depth in that i'm gonna guess mariah carey's one of her favorite singers um because she allows yourself to break um into kind of that that whistle tone uh squeak uh that uh mariah does it's it's quite effective it did it uh conveys a motion let yourself go live [Music] well that's impressive i guess you don't need me here to tell you that um that's just a really well produced uh whistle tone it's interesting um to to have voice teachers and researchers discuss what's going on with whistle to my knowledge they don't have exactly what's occurring but what they think is is on your vocal cords actually on the very top you get them so stiff that only the very very front part is vibrating so you only get a little bit of the vocal fold vibrating and making sound that's how it can get such a high pitch and she does that really really well [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh that's just a beautiful high belt now if you listen real close on the first note you can hear the uh in the throat with a bit of the eye on the mouth see if you can see if you can catch this let me let me take it back a little bit here we go [Music] yeah and she goes from that that ah sound to an e and she doesn't lose any of the intensity evals will tend to want to flip and go heady and singers will often take an e and they'll make it more of an a they'll say nay instead of me and she keeps a beautiful eval here i want to hear that [Music] again [Music] [Applause] okay killing me here that is that is just so good uh it's just her ability to sing that phrase without a breath and then the way she's able to change pitch and control that without any audible shift in register you don't hear her suddenly starting to strain or wanting to go weak it's just it's wonderful i i'm going to play that again just for me i'll take it back further beautiful beautiful [Music] oh my goodness [Music] wow wow that's just absolutely amazing i mean that's she's brilliant absolutely brilliant um her her ability to seamlessly sing through her registers from her lower note to her top note i don't hear her straining her vowels are beautifully balanced she can make them warmer and pull back in them a little bit or then she can open up the vowels and get a little more belt and a little more intensity and at no time do you feel like she's might get in trouble you're never nervous for her every note that comes you you just know she's gonna nail it um with just absolute precision and that's a great vocal performance and if she can do that sitting down in a bus uh i would imagine she's even more incredible on a stage so thank you for watching my name is john henny
