Vocal Coach Reacts to LEA SALONGA - On My Own from Les Misérables (10th Anniversary Concert)

we are back and today we are listening to Leia Salonga um not my first time hearing this woman I think I fell in love with her when I was a kid hearing Princess Jasmine Sing For the First Time Of course she was also the perfect Mulan and in my opinion the perfect eponine which is what we are watching today this is her performance of on my own from the 10th anniversary concert of Les Mis I have seen this performance before but it's been a minute I think the first time I saw this clip might have been in middle school or high school because we were getting ready to see Les Mis so we were learning all about it nonetheless I'm gonna do my best today to put on my my coach hat my teacher hat and really focus on the vocals and just why I love them so much so here we go [Music] thank you and now I'm all alone again nowhere to turn no one to go to without a home without a friend without a face to say hello too but now the night is near now I can make believe he's here sometimes I walk alone at night when everybody else is sleeping think of him and then I'm happy with the company I'm keeping City goes to bed and I can live inside my head [Music] oh gosh okay I might be stopping a lot throughout this I just love this woman so much this first section especially you know giving like given her voice acting and then like her stage experience I love how she really emphasizes and prioritizes text because what fun is a show or a movie if you have no idea what they're saying and so every word is crystal clear and she does not sacrifice vocal production in order to do that I love that she has such incredible dexterity in her mixed voice which was very evident just then so I'll point it out more as we go but yeah the text alone I think it's just such a an underrated skill that a lot of singers don't have and she is just Flawless when it comes to communicating [Music] on my own pretending he's beside me all alone I walk with him till morning without him I feel his arms around me and when I lose my way I close my eyes and he has found me my gosh I want so desperately to just not stop this this is perfection she starts this she starts this in mix which is safe which is smart because of where it is in her range and where the song goes and so to get that whispery quality she releases a little bit of tension from the cord so it's um yeah it has more breathiness to it a little bit more air can pass through I'm just gonna go back and I'm gonna try and respectfully talk over I don't know if this is gonna work we're just gonna go back to the beginning of the song [Music] beautiful contrast there with straight tone and vibrato on my own pretending he's beside me [Music] all alone I walk with him till morning so when she sings Walk you can hear a little bit of firmer reduction but before that it was all very gentle and very not breathy but just lighter and sounded very head dominant [Music] when I lose my way I close my eyes and he has found me in the Rain the pavement shines like silver all the lights are mistake in the river I love that she doesn't like force her low notes either she just lets them drop even if they feel a little low you can't tell I don't know her range just based off of this one song alone but she's not forcing or pushing that air to like create that the same power that she has on the top of her range she's just allowing it to come out so that the vibrato is consistent and steady [Music] and all I see is him and me forever and forever and I know it's only in my mind okay we're gonna go back a little bit because I need you to hear the difference like she had such a wide palette at the beginning and a slightly more spread vowels and so now that she's come to this part of the song that's so powerful and so moving her her soft palate's a little higher she's got taller vowels like all of that is creating just the slightly darker richer more powerful sound the trees [Music] [Music] wait for us I love him but when the nighting is over [Music] without him [Music] every day [Music] oh my gosh okay she's just so good okay I'm gonna I'm gonna go back um and try and point some stuff out oh okay here we go [Music] right here text so powerful like self and not to him she's really good at Shadow vowels so like after she says him she's got a little bit of a vow after the m so that you can understand and better Define the word she just said [Music] I know [Music] all of this really gorgeous well-balanced chest voice [Music] [Applause] [Music] God the river's just a river without him [Music] you can hear when she goes from day I'm that's when she starts to flip more into a mix [Music] or day it's just the tiniest like tiniest difference between all the words that came before and so you can hear that slight shift in placement [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] I love him I love him but only [Music] [Applause] again it's so it's so beautiful I am gonna still try and point something out oh um at the end on my own she has the most gorgeous slide and she does it on the the why is so smart [Music] I think what made her the perfect eponine is her utilization of head voice a lot of contemporary singers today who take on this role I feel like they do a lot more belting or like mixed belting and it's still beautiful and there's nothing wrong with that but hurt dexterity not only into head voice and a head dominant mix but also the way she incorporates that in in her phrasing it it just breaks your heart like it creates a completely different picture of the character and and her emotions and what she's going through and her Youth and her innocence and also you know her beauty inside and out you know however you want to say that just like throughout the the whole show like Marius is in love with cozette and because like she's so gorgeous but it's like when you have that stunning voice and you use head voice you can really picture her and it's like no but what about her like she's your friend and an Ebony and like she's equally as beautiful and kind and loving and all the things so yeah she was just she's just incredible not only as a vocalist but also as an actress and a performer and I
