this one is a patron vote winner and although we see a member of the Eagles up here it isn't the Eagles it's Don Henley as a solo artist and this is a song about Nostalgia so I chose a later version a version of him singing it more recently because it kind of makes more sense to me here let's have some fun now you're here live you got your whole band What About The Boys of Summer you love this song right I do tell me about writing this song come to you quick yeah kind of this song started out with Mike Campbell Mike Campbell as you should know is Tom Petty's lead guitarist are you trying to tell me I don't know that I don't know of course I know and I'm a rock Aficionado you know what I mean but it was a track yes just a track he had recorded it again in his home studio right so this was one that petty had rejected he passed on this track he passed on this track and they bring it to you bring it to me and you say hell write a couple of lyrics to this thing right yeah and what made you think of Boys of Summer just sounded good to you huh yeah and I'm a baseball fan that's what it was all about not well it's not about baseball really it's about life looking back yeah it's about you know I have a thing for this I have a thing about looking back so here it is this beautiful song The Boys of Summer you want to do it live and treat everyone too we're going to do a very contemplative for you can meditate you're changing this around a little bit yeah we have a slower more very nice more thoughtful version that we can do here we go the great Don Henley [Music] I'm interested to see his spoken voice compared to his singing voice [Music] I love this intro intractable and effective [Music] I'm driving by your house [Music] you're not home okay we're gonna go into this beautiful chorus his speaking voice and his singing voice is really similar so he's someone who's kind of drawn um from his own voice he hasn't kind of adapted too much to achieve a sound and it gives it this really really authentic feel to his voice which is lovely um I love how he throws away the end of each phrase often we can kind of over sing stuff um especially people who are trained singers we feel like we're just saying everything no no no no what's a junior you know a lot of singing teachers will say sing to the end of each each note and that does make sense sometimes dependent on the style certainly if you're singing musical theater a lot of the time you want that or definitely Opera but not necessarily here especially if you're wanting to tell a story so he's allowing it to be very spoken thrown away but he has beautiful vibrato in some of these moments he's he's kind of picking and choosing where he wants these song notes and of course his uh he's a drummer he's dead on with that rhythm brown skin shining in the sun interesting [Music] I love that vibrato on some I have gone really letting it run through but it's interesting because here he's got a little bit of tension a little bit of nasality and that is something that normally I'd be like get it out we're going to work around that it kind of works with it nostalgic feel it's interesting I always say this there are going to be things that you like and don't like about your voice there are going to be things that work technically that don't work technically for him he's still hitting those notes and he's staying in Rhythm those are the main things that you definitely want but that tension does add emotional tension it might also mean he fatigues a little bit quicker with my students I feel like it's important to lay out do you like that sound if you like that sound okay let's see if we can find a way to do that maybe that's a bit fatigue though it wasn't making you tired let's try and find a way that makes that sound in the way that you like but feels um nicer to sing I can see you know the tension in his face that makes me think that he is feeling that and it could just be where he is like on that day as well it might be like whatever he might like tomorrow he might feel really really free because our voice is uh you know we don't have the same instrument every day we have a changing instrument [Music] s it's just smoothness and crazy [Music] so well written [Music] shining in the Sun I see you walking real slow smiling in it anymore [Music] summer I am gone so you can see the mouth shape he's making I can't see you it's quite wide instead of I can't see you he's not allowing that jaw to drop so if you are looking for a bit of a warmer sound and there's a couple of things that I would suggest making sure your soft palate is raised so if you touch your tongue on the top the roof of your mouth it'll be the hardest bit and if you make your tongue go back you'll feel a soft bit right the back at the top and that's your soft palate and if you yawn oh you might feel that raise up or if you do a surprise oh you might feel that movement and you want to kind of get that feeling of lift without your tongue tensing yawning can sometimes make that tongue tense that might help you or also just dropping that jar his jaw looks like it's kind of there oh so I think that's something that to bear in mind if you like that sound then don't pay attention [Music] thank you [Music] Cadillac [Music] a little voice inside my head so don't look back could never look back I thought I knew of was what did I know those days are gone forever I should just let them go back [Music] there's a couple of things I want to talk about in that this course again I can see your sort of eye he's doing great vowel there keeping I can see you to keep it open just keeping it as an ah when he's going to a spoken bit as well he's kind of doing pitch speaking now we're always doing pitch speaking whenever we're always moving we're being driven and but he's keeping it to the pitch of the song rather than any old pitch which is important otherwise it kind of feels like it doesn't work rappers do it all the time summer [Music] I have gone [Music] with Arizona [Music] hmm it's a really beautiful song and it's so interesting that Tom Petty um rejected it and it's so funny because tracks and different musical pieces it's so subjective and so you know he's written some amazing songs himself Tom Petty so some things will just inspire you and your soul wants to create something out of it and sometimes it's the other way around and sometimes I feel like it's like the arch chooses you like that track was like I know that I want Dom to write this song on top of it um we're gonna go a bit of a long way around it but it wanted to find its rightful owner and I'm glad it did thank you for watching I hope you enjoyed if you did please do like and subscribe and I will see you in the next one [Music] down [Music] bye
