you it'll sound like any it will not in kingdom it'll sound like any other artist you've ever heard exactly so never mind just go to the next video just don't bother hi guys juan beste here thanks so much for joining me today where we are going to listen together to one of my favorite contemporary singers of all times you might know who eva cassidy is or maybe you are like millions of people who never heard of her eva cassidy has a very interesting story a sad story actually but um yeah she growing up always sang her dad was a musician but she she never really thought that she was so great she did some backing vocals for some people in local pubs and you know little venues around where she grew up and then finally a guy who was a producer and had his own recording studio said to her why don't you just come in and we lay down some tracks just for the heck of it sort of thing you know and they started doing that and then she started getting a little bit more interested in recording songs and so on but never really thinking that she would make a career out of it now eva cassidy was born in 1963 but she died in 1996 at the tender age of 33. once i discovered the cancer in her body it was really too late to do anything about it so her first album was released in 1997 the year after she passed away so she really became well known as a recording artist after her death so it's a really sad story actually and i always wondered just like with mozart who only was 35 years old when he died you know so much has been said about imagine what he would have done if he had lived to be 70 or 80 years old like many of the other composers and the same goes for eva you know imagine the impact she could have had on the world if she started really at that age a recording career and and released incredible stuff but anyway the reason i want to share this this track with you today um i know the track very well i bought that album called live at blues alley um blues ali is a famous um venue for jazz and blues artists in washington dc and so she did a concert there and somebody thank goodness decided to film the whole thing and record the whole thing and it's just so amazing to see her just sit there with her guitar and just the mastery that she had in her vocals just incredible um as far as i'm concerned she's probably the best or definitely one of the best artists i've ever seen in covering other people's songs as far as i can tell she never really wrote her own songs or recorded them i might be wrong so maybe leave a comment if you know any different if you're eva cassidy fan but she she mainly did covers of other people's songs and today i would like to listen to this cover of hers of somewhere over the rainbow from the wizard of oz so i guarantee that if you've never heard this version her version of over the rainbow it's going to blow you away because it'll be unlike anything any version of that song you've you've heard before so let's get into it [Music] so [Music] over [Music] the rainbow [Music] [Applause] up that i heard up once [Music] once wow it literally makes me emotional almost every time i listen to it but looking at her even more so but one of the things i just want to mention is that did you notice you can hardly tell that she's taking breaths that she's inhaling before she sings a phrase um to me she's just one of those singers who i don't know but probably has never been trained i think everything we see and hear from her as a singer is just pure raw natural gifting and instincts so she never looks like she's trying very hard and and yeah certainly i cannot see her planning and doing proper inhales and then i also love the fact that she sings over the phrases now what i mean by that is it's not just somewhere over the rainbow blue birds fly like oftentimes she will she will extend the end of one phrase over into the beginning of the next phrase and she will do her phrasing in other words where her music breathes where her vocaline breathes she will do it in very unexpected places so so cool [Music] the rainbow skies [Music] a blue [Music] that you to dream really do come true [Music] it's funny just after i talked about not being being able to see or hear her breathe then she took some really audible inhales but anyway um the thing is the fact that she doesn't plan the breathing but just flows with it really organically does mean that sometimes she runs out of breath or she makes she has to make the last word a little bit shorter in the line but it doesn't matter right because of the way that she sings and the kind of artist and performer that she is i imagine that almost every time she sings a song like this or any other song it'll be slightly different just that instinctive a change of mind sometimes you know in the middle of a line if you're a singer maybe you know what i'm talking about sometimes we feel like that even if we planned and practiced the song in a very specific way always phrasing at the same point then sometimes when you're on stage in that moment you just you make a split second decision to make something longer or phrase in a different place but anyway so beautiful and wake up where the clouds are fall [Music] behind where troubles melt like lemon drops oh way above that chimney tops that's away you find me [Music] i don't feel like interrupting but um she's a really skillful guitarist i in her style i love how she uses her guitar so beautifully it's almost sometimes a duet between the voice and the guitar um she uses the guitar to just fill in in some of the gaps where the vocal line is is interrupted um incredible to me how she sings so softly it is the hardest thing to sing softly but flowing because when we sing loud there's a lot of air flowing but we're missing soft it's very little air i always say when somebody sings very loud and big notes and everybody's impressed by it then i then i always say well i would love to hear them sing softly because then i'll be able to tell do they really have control of their voice she has such incredible control of her voice singing so softly and she changes the shape of her mouth in interesting ways during during the middle of a syllable in other words of one vowel just modifies the vowel so instinctively for a certain kind of expression so beautiful [Music] [Music] someday i wish upon a start and wake up where the clouds are far [Music] behind [Music] where troubles melt like lemon drops or way above the chimney tops that's where [Music] you find [Music] me [Music] skies are blue oh my gosh i probably have listened to this many many hundreds of times in my life but honestly so didn't you just love that me somewhere another example of how she goes over the phrase but but she creates so much expectation it's so interesting all the time what's going to happen next so unpredictable and just how open her sound was and again the control that she has oh my gosh and then decrescendoing just going softer on that long note at the end of that fairly long line in one breath and just going softer and so so controlled the mood changes so frequently when she sings and not in a way that it's like confusing or it's like she doesn't know what she wants to do but it's just like coming and going of intensity i think is a better way to describe it emotional intensity is so incredible i just love it let's let's listen to the end [Music] dreams that you dare to dream really do come true [Music] if happy [Music] oh i can't [Music] [Music] sure the simplicity is so profoundly beautiful to me in her delivery um in this song i don't even notice there at the end um the sound just sort of went away i have heard that happen sometimes in her live performances but i think stuff like that is just not important with an artist like this and and also the style that she's singing in here um because she clearly can't be bothered to you know be correct or to do things in such a controlled and disciplined and what's the word predictable way she's the kind of singer who just makes you hang on her lips all the time like what is she going to do next where is this going to go next oh i think it's beautiful you should really check it out somebody made a playlist live at blues alley actually i'll put the link in the description below this video um if you are a fan if and if you've not seen that or maybe you want to discover a little bit more about eva cassidy so somebody made a playlist live at blue's alley and they put the individual tracks of all the songs that she sang in that concert i must say she also did a studio version of this song where of course everything is then you know much more under control and maybe she's done a few takes for certain lines or whatever and there's also some other instrumentation in the track that is really really beautiful as well i can't remember which album that was on but yeah i just wanted to share that with you i wanted to i wanted to start sharing singers and artists with you that really connects with my heart um sometimes when something amazing comes up like the golden buzzer moment of night bird the other day um i'd like to you know to talk about that as well and some new artists and whatever and thank you by the way for all the suggestions many of you have suggested me checking out different kinds of artists and i'm i'm really looking at that and considering that but yeah i just wanted to do every now and again a video like this where i just chat about a singer who really like i said connects with my heart and whose gift i just found so i just find so profound and and beautiful it just blesses me every time i listen to this woman so yeah that was iva cassidy live at blues alley singing over the rainbow thank you
