Vocal Coach Reacts! BTS! Singing without mics! (and messing around)

i will preface this by saying i have never heard bts before in my life um i don't really know anything about them so i am going into this completely blind as per usual um but yeah i somehow have managed to that was the largest truck in the world i somehow have managed to completely have this all passed me by so let's just go and have a listen hello welcome back to my channel my name is sam this one has been a long time coming i have had several many uh requests to listen to these boys men folks gents people um and it is possibly the biggest band in k-pop um i could be completely wrong because i know there's folks like black pink and and others that are like up there but this is one you hear an awful lot i've seen they're like dolls in stores and stuff so i'm thinking they're kind of the best known here anyway uh i am obviously talking about bts what does that stand for by the way does anyone know let me know if you know now i have decided to pick a video called how bts sings without microphone um because sometimes the k-pop machine can be quite hard to kind of hear through um there's a huge amount of production in k-pop stuff so i just want to get to know these boys voices individually and and as raw as we can possibly hear them so i'm really excited i know that it probably will upset some folk um because i'm not listening to one of their tracks but it's anywho let's go and have a listen to bts so starting with jungkook i like his ice cream thai oh jimin j-hope [Music] gin sugar [Music] rm there's quite a lot of them [Music] wow so straight off the bat that was such an unusual voice very very high placed larynx almost kind of like a baby sounding voice and but it gives this kind of really smooth um kind of slick energy very nice the acoustics in that elevator place as well were banging very good so i'm thinking he did that um on purpose just to like completely try and thrash his voice um so it would be funny uh we'll we'll take that as a humor rather than bad technique [Applause] [Music] [Applause] see like as he was moving up his register there rather than belt it which i assume he could do he went into kind of a full set away place so that it's not as intense um you'll find that if you're singing in a room a very small room like that little green room and you're not going to want to like belt that leg because you'll end up hurting the ears of everyone around you so that was just a nice little modification there of his uh range i'll give you my heart but the very next day you gave me the word this year to save me from tears orange hair i apologize because i know no one's names um maybe jamin because he said that i love his voice it is so smooth such a crystal clear beautiful tone yeah i'm into his voice the other guy had a lovely voice as well is slightly um breathier i would say but yeah just ah lovely i'm so pretty you know even with them kind of um joking around they actually hit a really interesting harmony in there and i think a lot of this is just they're just young guys and they're having a really good time and they're just messing around um i don't i don't know very much about them but it doesn't look like they take themselves all that seriously which is great that's what you want you want a bit of fun in your boy bands so yeah but even though they were kind of all going in really weird places they somehow managed to gel which probably just goes to show how close they are as a vocal unit so whoever he was sorry this is really gonna annoy you all i know that um he seemed to be singing high notes with the drop lyrics tell me something so it kind of pulls everything into this kind of weird betweeny place there's just a lot of kind of air very kind of ghostly really nice tone though really nice i'll just enjoy them [Applause] that was a bit of whitney there it took me a while to get what he was doing but it almost had like an almost like a yodel onto it because he was flipping into like a really strong head voice there's a lot of power in that voice very very strong belt there good good stuff [Applause] [Applause] okay so this guy uh he likes to kind of push his voice to more extreme places so everything's a lot more textured that was uh a lot of gravel in his voice there and at the end you heard a wine um not entirely sure how um how serious he's going for or what he sounds like when he's like recording um but i like that he's playful with his [Music] voice [Music] [Applause] [Music] no is this the guy that was at the elevator because that is in saying how kind of high and um and bright his voice is it honest it sounds almost childlike um i'm impressed i'm impressed i wonder how far he could push that like how high he could get with that voice i imagine into some pretty stupidly high places [Music] [Music] oh [Music] so what was happening there was he was following a female vocal but it was what he was perceiving as quite high i'm thinking so he tried to drop it down but if he was to drop it then a full octave it would be so low that it would possibly be kind of impossible to drop down to so he sat somewhere in between um which wasn't exactly on the right key but then you heard he kind of just went oh i'm gonna have to jump up so he pushed himself up onto that tone um and and yeah it was good smashed it [Music] [Applause] hello [Music] such an unusual voice [Music] hey [Music] going into the head voices let's make some shots [Music] [Music] one is that lovely drop larynx kind of rich smoky sound and the second thing is that he had an eevee which is just a badass pokemon you can turn it into like a million other pokemon that look like little dog things but you know different elements and shh [Music] [Laughter] [Music] anyways [Music] [Music] such a holiday i don't know why they're stopping them [Music] no so they know when to add in that kind of aspirate tone which is where the folds aren't coming completely together and you're getting more air flow through so you get kind of like a smooth smoky sound i don't know why i chose those specific notes but they are very dynamic in the use of their voices i think i'm gonna have to listen to them actually doing a song seriously because a lot of this is just them kind of messing around but it's giving me a good insight into why people love this group so much because they genuinely just kind of like exude fun like they're they're just having a good time and they seem to be uh pretty good at taking everyone along for the ride [Music] oh [Laughter] [Applause] foreign so i don't know if i could hear the song behind that uh that they were dancing to and singing to but i think if that's the same song they've dropped the key because it may be a bit too high to do acapella without it sounding strange in that environment but it could be a completely different song so i don't know [Music] streaming [Music] thank you for watching okay so yeah that was pretty much nine minutes of them just kind of messing around and it did give me a tiny little bit of insight into their voices because there was a few times where even when they were playing i could still kind of get a little bit of an idea of what textures and tones their voice naturally goes to and i was particularly impressed with the guy with the really bright almost child like sound and the one with the super like low larynx smoky sound i don't know who they were specifically but maybe you guys could let me know uh also uh i think i'm gonna have to go and try and find just like a live performance um where they're actually using their their singing voices to their their fullest and to get a real idea of what they're doing but that was so much fun uh just kind of watching them mess around they're they're very
