Vocal Coach Reacts | Alex Newell | Mama Will Provide

[Music] hello everyone it's auren from valerie vocals here and welcome back to my channel for yet another video critique review uh whatever you want to call it this time i am going to be diving into one of my favorite singers i followed his career since he began on the glee project uh many years ago and that is alex newell a lot of people that are into you know broadway and tv shows and that kind of stuff may be very familiar with him if you're not prepared to have your mind absolutely blown he's an absolute powerhouse and i've never come across a voice quite like it from the mail it's unbelievable so um we're gonna get stuck in with this this is his performance from his 2018 tony performance of mama will provide from once on this island which is the show that he featured in for quite a long time so let's do it here we go [Music] okay here we go our story begins on the night of a flood that's clever i love the fact this uh that the whole show is completely immersive for the audience you sit in a circle around the whole show which i think is so cool because you could go and watch it three or four times and see it from completely different angles and points of view um which gives you a whole new view of the show and i love how physical theater kind of based it is everything's done using the people in the show it's really [Music] clever but one small girl was spared and opened locked from the flood by awkway there he is i love the backing vocals already that kind of like tribal sort of feel it's awesome chanting the power of death [Applause] there is mama osaka [Music] [Music] oh how awesome is that like uh alex lives in this kind of place where uh he's between m1 and m2 he sort of sits in this lovely beautiful mix area that he can just hop on to him and hop into him today so you heard that need a thing or two he just did so effortlessly and it was so you didn't it was like almost conversational but some people really struggle with that transition and he does it so easily and um for those who haven't followed alex's kind of career um he's just a he's so accomplished vocal of what he can do he always has been i mean he was singing and i'm telling you in the original key aged 18. um and often people mistake alex for being female just due to i mean one he's playing a female role uh two he's very genderfluid with how he wears dresses and things like that and three his vocal is you know has such a feminine sound to it but also has that really rich undertone so um he's kind of got the best of all the worlds there really it's absolutely remarkable but for those who are watching who aren't sure uh alex as far as malware identifies fully as male is biologically male and has that incredible voice which would be amazing on a female let alone on a male it's amazing [Music] him it's obviously quite low um yeah only thing i didn't like on that was the seem to seem to i actually don't know what the word he's singing is there but what he sang there was no kind of start or finish to it so you didn't actually hear what the actual word was for those who know the show it's probably very obvious um that wasn't for me there um so just a tiny tiny little thing i also believe uh i mean avid fans will know this i think he had bronchitis at the time of doing this he had like a huge 99 shows on the trot that he did and he didn't miss a show the whole time he got really severe bronchitis towards the end of it uh which is why he was awarded like the goat award which is the greatest of all time because he just got on with it and he uses that vocal growl as kind of a cushion vocal growl if you can do it well kind of makes it a bit easier to sing these ridiculously high notes that he's having to sing because if you are suffering with an illness bronchitis things like that you're gonna have less stability and kind of fullness on those big top notes so if you can put a bit of growl on it it just kind of takes you can get away with a little bit more he kind of can get away with not being completely perfect and clean because that growl's given the effect and it's so suited to the character he couldn't get away with it if he was playing you know sealy on on the color purple because you need to have that beautiful straight tone but here he he can get away with that grip because he's this gospel kind of character where you can sort of get away with so much more but back to it [Music] [Music] fun for your toes [Music] just it's so taken away from the vocal he's just so casual how he's doing it like he's singing a really hard track and he's just like yeah bum with the fan just going he's such a talented performer all around it's amazing and again just taking back to that kind of tribal primal uh backing chorus and ensemble there that you've just got giving it that kind of fullness that you get you feel like you're actually on an island with a completely different tribe almost it's so cool [Music] my body looks exactly the same as that [Music] yeah oh that placement [Music] look [Applause] yeah i know we're reviewing alex but um forgive my ignorance i'm not sure who she is i know she's probably very very well known so all the musical theater buffs are going to come for me here but yeah please inform me send me some links and videos but just there you notice i've gone on all my videos about creating space to make things easy you obviously heard smile there but she actually sang they'll smash my she went smack she didn't even sing smile she went and that just gives you all that lovely space she's actually singing an ah but we as an audience member here the opening in the closing we need those opening and closing parts of the word to let our brains know what the word is and she did that she sang smat and la at the end so you get that and then she opened into a nice ah to give herself vocal stability make the note a lot easier and if she's doing eight shows a week that will just be such an easy way to get around it whereas there's my instantly a little bit more tense there's more room for margin for error so really really smart choice back to alex though [Applause] [Music] that i mean come on what the hell that's incredible um and that well they're just the climb and you hear that like i said he's gone up to the big belt he's instantly put vocal growl onto it um which he might be doing every show anyway but if he is struggling with the bronchitis sort of illness in this video that will just give him that extra security that he needs but amazing [Music] hear it [Music] wow and there we have it everyone that was alex newell's 2018 tony performance of mama will provide as mama osaka uh i mean it's just insane like i say the fact that that even if that was coming from a female would be so impressive the fact is coming from a male larynx is just uh unbelief but i'd love to be able to see what's going on in there because there is you know there's some serious magic isn't there um literally just going back to that last note which was i think a full whistle kind of note it was a what [Music] yeah there that's goodness me i mean he's going for a that's a b flat six i believe that he's done nice whistle tone really clean um some might argue it's unnecessary but again when you're in that character you can kind of do what you want he's got complete vocal freedom because he's this over-the-top excessive kind of character uh where he can just go and do that and it's super impressive it's the tony so why not show off a bit um for those who haven't seen alex new before hopefully you really enjoyed that i really want to do a bit more heavy stuff in the future um and because i do work predominantly in musical theater uh with you know people that tour or do western shows or musical theater performers they're my main kind of client base i kind of want to do a bit more of that as well with musicals so i will of course keep doing that you know the big big big names the popular people that we all know about household names but i'd also like to maybe once a week start digging into some really well-known musical theater performers um or maybe not as well known as
