a coffee or sank from the kiosk and then watch the surf or head out for a swim or surf definitely get some food from the chaos good food um come for a surf probably to the vocal beach bakery well i like the date scones there they're pretty tasty macy laura lauren yeah sally probably julian wilson or ryan callum probably ice bucket ace the viz the pro surf series at evoca see you up here so [Music] good morning and welcome to finals day here at the visceral surf series the qs 3000 we have the first semi-final of the women's out there the sister revolution pro nd we've got some solid surf coming through here uh it's at least uh probably sets around eight feet i'm sure i saw one at the 10 foot mark my name is reggae ellis joining me here in the booth is shannon hughes and shannon we're into the semis and the finals it's going to be a big day and how is the surf oh it's absolutely firing walking down to the beach this morning i saw jacob wilcox drop into a massive left-hand reeling wave that just opened up with such a nice face so we know we have a lot on offer for finals day we've only got six heats to get through reggae our first heat out in the lineup sally fitzgibbons against molly piccolum and we got a few couple of semi-finals and we'll crown our champions here for the central coast pro yeah we're down to the final four surfers of course here in the sister revolution central coast pro and yes coming up next in 72 will be mesa callahan and freya prime but all the action is now this is a tight heat he's going to be uh pretty exciting sally fitzgibbons and molly picklin form surfers all the way through and uh yeah it's uh no surprises see sally out there and of course molly see as one of the real up-and-coming young surfers out of australia in the world at the moment uh they're just both such phenomenal competitors sally fitzgibbons of course uh you know heading to the olympics preparing for that sort of journey she's been on the championship tour for 11 years now um and has bounced through some qs events in that time has had some great qs wins as well which is nice to talk about given that this is a q s event but then for someone like molly picclum to come up against sally in the semi-finals with a lot of points on the line for sally this event is just one of those warm-up practice events she doesn't need it for the end of the year for results but for molly picclum she is beginning to build her campaign towards qualification for the 2022 world tour and this is going to be a really big moment for the young surfer from north shelley yeah of course north shelley just a few kilometers up the road yeah molly she served a tough beat yesterday at sarah ball it was really solid in the afternoon found two ways it just allowed her enough room to move um before shutting down today there's a few diamonds amongst a rough out there you talked about the way that um we saw jacob on but yeah some solid sets coming through it's going to be tricky to pick those right waves but if you do there's massive scoring potential out there on these sets yeah and a lot of those left seem to be opening up pretty well um you know from what we're seeing right now just a couple of closeouts but there is some great scoring potential on offer that beautiful sunrise setting here on the east coast of australia and it's going to be a really fun day of surf we do have some wind that's predicted to come through kind of late afternoon by lunchtime sorry early late morning by about lunchtime which is why we're getting off to an early start it's why we ran through the quarter finals yesterday which is generally we'd hold off all of our final rounds until the final day of competition but we had such good surf on offer throughout yesterday afternoon we decided to capitalize on that and have a short concise finals day today that's right we want to give our surfers optimum conditions out there and that um east north easterly forecast this afternoon is going to be quite strong and uh yeah just with six heats and a few hours of surfing hopefully we would have wrapped up the finals by then but there's the overview there of avoca beach beautiful shot of the drone you can see the headland uh that gives us some protection from the southerly wind that we've had over the last few days um yeah it's a magic spot here in the central coast on the south side of that headland to go down the copacabana and tour mcmahon towards mcmasters and the booty booty national park so uh yeah there you go so you can see why it's um this place has turned out some amazing surfers over the years very strong board riders club here and they're been around for a long time so solid surfing culture here with avoca so 24 minutes left in the seat we're giving them 30 minute heats out here for the surfers obviously the results table from the best two waves so we want to give them ample time wave selection is going to prove to be crucial out there and you can see that's the comfort uh contest infrastructure just set up there on the tents in the tents i should say and uh no way i've ridden so the surf is being quite choosy at the moment there hasn't been anything to open up for them yeah it's a bit of a bit of a slow start it's nice that there is that full 30 minutes so that they can really take their pick of the best of the lineup without having to feel forced to rush anything sally fitzgibbons has a great team behind her from surfing australia this week as they're doing some kind of mock olympic style stuff to prepare for the upcoming events in tokyo she's got b derby in her corner as far as coaching goes kate skerrick as well so it's been great to kind of watch that developing on the sidelines this week and then we have molly picklem of course with local coach glenn micro hall and that's been an amazing dynamic as well where we saw micro compete in the event early on just to set an example to those surfers to get out and have a go yeah and to be coaching some of the best athletes in the lineup this week yeah and uh michael you got through a couple of rounds there as well you're surfing pretty well just missed out getting through that uh i think it was around 64. as we see a solid set just catching both our surfers inside there's going to be a fair bit of duck diving going on here today so positioning is going to be difficult and uh first heat in the water sort of like the guinea pigs aren't they they really are it's a little different paddling out for your free surf free surf early on in the morning and having a look at the conditions for today we are currently kind of in that mid tide range and it's dropping to a low tide at 11 15. the swell sort of peaked overnight and it's still looking so solid from what we saw building yesterday afternoon yeah very so there you guys you see a solid set just catching our surfers inside they went hunting for a mid-sized set on the inside as we all know when you do that when there's uh some rogue sets coming through inevitably you get cleaned up absolutely and we've seen those surfers kind of you know trying to pick their spot lineup when it's so big like this it's a very spread out field so you have to really be decisive on either sitting for the left which we just saw kind of reeling down the two women in the lineup were just too far to the north to be able to get in position for that left but then if they decide they're going to go for the rights today it's also going to have to be a really committed paddle up to the north end you can't really sit in that middle spot that's where we saw in that quarterfinal yesterday between molly picklem and sarah baum where molly had committed to just sitting on the left and sarah got a little bit stuck in that middle section without dedicating herself all the way to the right or to the left she was in that closeout zone the whole time and was unable to find anything that opened up and so it'll be interesting to see now how molly takes that into account knowing that yesterday she was able to work out where to sit on a day like this when there are some giant sets coming through but there's some fun ones like this one coming through the screen now yeah so yeah finding those those waves that stand up for a good two or three turns is going to be the mission so almost 10 minutes passing this semi-final neither surfer has taken off so both sally and molly been caught inside twice so just finding trying to find their position in the lineups proving difficult and uh yeah you've got to think now okay it's now become a 20-minute heat looking for two waves so but that's just so that's the story we of the day i think we're going to see this quite a bit and having periods without a wave ridden yep coming down to that 20 minute mark 10 minutes down and both women starting to pedal back towards the inside they've allowed that set to roll through and now they're repositioning to hope for something slightly smaller so taking a look at their results to make it into the semi-final so far for the sister evolution central coast pro we saw both sally and molly picklem opening up in the round of 64. sally fitzgibbons was in the very first heat took out a big win molly picklin was in heat number four she also took out a big win against a couple of really great up and coming stars and jasmine sampson and jess starling for sally fitzgibbons and andos santos who we saw in the quarterfinals yesterday and lucy little child for molly pickle in that first round so both with the wins then coming into the round of 32 sally was in that first heat molly in the second one both came out on top with big wins against again some more really solid names in the draw and then those two met up these two sally and molly in the round of 16. sally came away with a win molly came through in second split up in the quarters for those big wins so it's the second heat for these two matching up in the quarterfinals and it looks like we have a restart on the board reggae yep no way he's written in the first 10 minutes so as per the rules that is a restart and uh yeah so then to have another 30 minutes to go again and yeah i was watching that mid-range set and i thought because they the girls surfers would have known they could have turned that around by taking off but when you don't have any wave there's no point going for a one i've seen it happen a few times in the past where a surfer will just wait and bang he goes you know so if you get that that spot but uh sally and molly now have another 30 minutes out there and you don't get two restarts so so much time on the clock for them like you said better that they don't take off on something that's not going to work then some of those heats where you see someone take off just for the sake of it yeah that's gonna be an interesting move there both having a look a tight look it looks like molly sorry sally fitzgibbons ended up right on the inside of molly and this could be potentially the line that we've been waiting for have a look at this set reggae yeah standing up and seeing where our surfers are in position that looks like they're gonna get caught again i'm pretty sure now that we've had the restart they won't be uh they might get a bit busier to get things moving uh very choosy at the start of this heat now they know they have 30 minutes and without potential for another restart i'll probably want to get moving so we see a solid set coming through here looks good from this angle not sure we'll just wait and see there's the overview you can see those waves peaking way outside i saw a set before feathered another 50 meters out from that and those rights up the beach are really solid now probably not surfable like we saw yesterday there's a lot of closeouts it does seem to have a bit more size than we were seeing throughout yesterday afternoon which we were expecting with that swell peaking overnight you can see those swell lines also moving across out on the horizon that really strong deep south swell that's just pushing its way up the coast we're getting a lot of it that's swinging into avoca beach here and the reason that we are back at the pines today for our contest location rather than up at the shark tower is that the shark tower is going to be that much bigger because it's going to just that little north swing in the beach is going to pick up that much more swell than this little corner that we're sitting in at the south end of avoca as we see another huge set rolling through and remembering back to the events that we've had so far for the vista new south wales pro surf series sally fitzgibbons made her first appearance last week at maroubra at the mad max maroubra pro we just saw molly just falling off the end of that wave didn't see the start of it and not sure whether that was just a quick take off we'll know as soon as the scores lock in well that's exciting 26 minutes on the clock after a restart so 15 minutes in and sally fitzgibbons is now out the back with priority we will have a score to come through for molly pickle and there it is a 4.17 so it must have been a turn before that fall off so judging that score she must have had one hat on the outside for that white wall to bounce it off and sally fitzgibbon's now sitting with priority out the back molly picklin with a score on the board so getting that exchange started similar to her heat with sarah baum getting something with that first score so now i'll be looking for another wave that'll allow her to open up and connect on a second and push that score up into that good to average range sally fitzgibbons and the mad max maroubra pro knocked out in the quarter finals it was her first event of the year here in australia and now drawing into it off the bottom molly pick clem so molly just grabbing that one on the outside one turn and a half turn and then a kick out and looks like it's just a one point ride there so with the two wave total of five point two four molly pickle making way back out so just having a look at that little one was hoping it would turn into something a little bit more substantial always worth investigating especially at this stage she's already got a score on the board and now to free herself up to lock into something maybe a bit smaller that will allow her to connect a couple of maneuvers together molly picclum has had a good run in the new south wales pro surf series she took out the win at the very first event at the great lakes pro in that final she matched up to sophie mcculloch who came in second sophie then went on in maroubra to beat sally fitzgibbons in the quarterfinals and have a look at this set i mean that swell is pulsing regain it is indeed sal just caught uh inside by that one just snuck under that first one not sure whether the second one is going to conquer on the head again it looks like she's uh just prowling the line so a pretty easy duck dive out of that first wave at sally fitzgibbons looking to open up her account we've seen a 4.17 at 107 for molly picklin and 15 minutes has passed in this heat molly making way back into the lineup and uh yeah so sally fitzgibbons experienced surfer out there of course you will not be panicking by any stretch of the imagination uh yeah these waves making things pretty difficult for the surfers it's looking to get into position looks like molly might be having a look at this inside one but sally out the back in the red this one needs to get around this section but no so she gets to take off and that one just shuts down on it pretty quickly smaller inside wave so i was probably presuming or hoping that one would give at least one turn before it shut down that didn't happen so a throwaway point seven there for sally fitzgibbons well we have a heat underhand 23 minutes on the clock molly pickle now at the back with priority and molly again took out that win at the central at the great lakes pro in boomerang for the starting event of the series came in ninth place at port stevens and skipped the opportunity to surf in maroubra rather spend that time at home prepare for an event with a lot of points on the line for this qs 3000 for the sister revolution central coast pro right and i think molly's sitting fairly high about fifth or sixth on the uh whistler series ratings yeah she's done really well with that so far and molly's just you know starting to open up that campaign on the qualifying series she's been competing on the qs since she was 15 she actually made it to the finals in her first ever qs at 15 years old wow we've seen her just blowing up as a grom coming through the australian ranks she's now out of high school and in that kind of first full year of competition mode yeah out of the junior series and it's great to see her getting through to these match-ups in the bigger events with a lot of points on the line to put her into that challenger series conversation yeah well she's been uh one of the standouts in the australian events uh straight open a surfing series late last year had some a couple of good solid wins there and uh molly picklin currently holding lead sally fitzgibbons that throw away molly with priority she's having a look at this wave can't she get into what she can so in the black molly pickling long line ahead of her well she was going to go for that lip she couldn't get around it unfortunately so uh yeah use the priority there it's not going to amount to much that wave just uh half turn up the face before that one shut down so sally fits now with priority and looking to lock in a five plus wave just to get getting the mix here there's still plenty of time of course 21 minutes remaining you can see that that draining tide's really starting to affect things it was really hopeful that that wave would open up just enough for molly to get in a solid turn as we see another huge set coming through the lineup and it is just absolutely maxing like you said some 10-foot sets out there potentially today and sally fitzgibbons just finding her way some free surfers up there up the beach further this is the uh the angle looks like they're uh almost in the competitors area but they're not as we see sally fits this way i don't know if it's going to offer much he's just trying to get in position so another you see on this angle these waves coming through and standing up well someone's swimming out the back for a bit of an ocean swing as you do when it's eight to ten feet that's pretty brave look at this solid set wow i mean these guys need to be paddling on guns out there yeah something with a bit of length to it seven eight foot boards to get into that sort of wave this one sally fitz just you can see this one's just going to shut down again big explosion on the inside and molly having a little look not much going on there for her either so both surfers really struggling to find that scoring right at the moment really difficult conditions of course fairly unruly lineup and it's a matter of getting into that spot just about her exactly just a matter of finding the right wave down to 20 minutes on the clock sally fitzgibbon sitting with priority we did have that restart for those of you tuning in 20 sorry 10 minutes went without a single wave written so we got a restart now into 20 minutes remaining on that side of the clock sally fitzgibbon's chasing a 4.57 to take an advancing position and of course we saw sally out at pipeline to finish up the maui pro that's right which was the start of the 2021 championship tour the world surf league championship tour which we'll be resuming here in australia in just a couple of weeks at the new castle cup and we've got a paddle from sally fitzgibbons driving hard to get into this first big swooping turn will she be able to find it in section shuts down on her yeah she was sort of delaying that turn i thought she we could tell she thought she was going to have that opportunity around uh benefit hindsight needed to go straight up that second turn so those waves it did hold back for quite some time and then it sort of bends in on that inside bank as you can see with that mid-set there and just throws itself over so sally getting one turn in there 2.5 so it's a have a look at the replay here she looked good here like it's a smaller inside set she's into it you'll see quick little slicing turn off the top and looking down the line for that section but it just ran away from her really quickly yeah it would have been great to see sally with that first swoop just kind of go for that mid face turn to reconnect with the lip yeah rather than drive off the bottom you can see she thought about it for a moment but it looked like that next section was going to hold open so it'll be interesting to see how she adjusts her approach now knowing that on the next couple waves she could be looking at something similar we get that quick two-turn combo yep without a massive first turn but rather to find that lip line to finish off with and get that combination total going so 2.5 on the scoreboard for sally fitzgibbons now chasing a 2.78 to take the lead away from molly picclum molly out there now sitting the lineup with priority she i think she'll be looking for a uh similar wave to what sally caught it might give her a chance for for two turns in these bit of a lull in the biggest sets at the moment so there's molly just glancing at that wave obviously it's not much action for her sally on the end here she goes sally fitzgibbons hooking this one up nice carving turn out of the top she might have time for a second she needs to get up into it now and she does oh yeah good surfing there from sally time that one well and that uh fortuitous way for her sal was paddling back out she was a just got back to the lineup and was a little bit wider than uh molly who wasn't in a position to catch it so sally fitzgibbon's there locking in two turns and clean face on that wave have a look at the replay here so she drives into this first turn nice connection with the lip nice and vertical and then the second section opens up well and she just keeps that pressure on the back foot coming out of it rides out clean and she's got two turns connected together i like that wave selection like you were saying on that paddle back out sitting slightly wider than where the two girls have been sitting so far molly's still sitting pretty far out in the lineup and sal was able to sneak that one underneath her with a 6.67 molly picklin now up and riding drives into a first nice extended turn connects into the lip on the second and that is going to be a solid score it is indeed sally scored a 6.67 for her wave so that has put her up in the lead but dare i say temporarily molly needing 5.01 that uh second term was fairly critical and in a bigger way have a look at the replay drives off beautiful turnout at the top and she just sets it up nicely and hooks it up in the lip and just rides that out very well so molly picklin and sally fitzgibbon both locking in a decent wave at the uh just as we hit 16 minutes the back half of this heat is going to be very tight indeed pretty similar looking waves from both of them same approach same first turn same second turn but that way for molly definitely had the size and the power that sally's was lacking yeah half a point better and there it is with a 7.4 so yeah molly picklin back in the lead sale needing a 4.91 you see uh there's not much in it at the moment molly's two waves giving her a two and a half point advantage thereabouts so sally fitz with priority we should be looking for a similar score or higher than her last one so they um now they both found that sort of mid-sized wave and they which they know allowed the scoring opportunity with two good solid turns so that's what they'll be aiming at now yeah that was a really great exchange i love that they have found some open face timed it well to be able to get in that second turn 15 minutes on the clock and now i feel like they're they'll both be freed up they've got that they've still got so much time to hunt out the lineup for the right waves but they also will maybe be able to recognize a little better what's coming through and what's going to be a good one you can see that look on sally's face feeling like all right we've got this heat's underway she's now sitting out the back with priority she's chasing that 4.91 to take an advancing position and for sally of course you know she's got some bigger events coming up but for her like she takes every competition so seriously she's entered into the qs every single year she's been on the championship tour for 11 years now but within that time over the last few years she pretty consistently surfs at surf fest in newcastle every year she's taken out the win there before just in 2019 she had the win a big win over isabella nichols in the finals in solid sized newcastle and she really has kind of put in that time she surfed at the sydney surf pro events that molly picclem is just getting her name in the draw in with those bigger qs5 thousands or the qs6000 that it was at newcastle and the new challenger series that's opened up which the sydney surf pro is a part of yeah and so for sally to return to competition in that space unnecessarily she's been able to re-qualify herself in that you know top five six number on the women's championship tour for a number of years without relying on qualifying series results um and so it's great to see her you know make a show up here getting ready for newcastle yeah well as you know sally posted interviews oh yeah ricky you know i just love putting on the rashes love pulling on the rashi she is the ultimate frother yeah she just loves competing and uh you know that beaming smile comes uh pouring down the screen and sally fitz always keen to get things moving for the year and uh he's out there now with priority looking for that 4.91 just under 13 minutes she's having a little glance at this one but oh she's going to take it sally fitzgibbons up and riding throws a nice carving turn out of the top gets it straight back into the lip hooks a nice turn so smaller wave at first i thought she wasn't going to go for it then molly went so sally thought you know what i might just take this two good solid turns there looking for a 4.91 have a look at the replay so nice slicing turn out the top then straight into a critical turn out of the lip to finish looking really fluid no time wasted between either of those turns yeah so waiting for scores to come through we'll certainly back up that 6.67 now molly's sitting with priority and i like sally's intention on that wave she was maybe not going to go but seeing that molly was having a look at it and that it would increase it had the potential to increase molly's 4.17 sally knew that seeing that wave she had to go and use priority over her well she got a 4.6 so uh it did stop molly from extending her lead a little bit so but so still chasing that 4.91 so really tight two-way totals there just uh 0.3 the difference at the moment but it's going to come down to the second wave for each surfer eleven and a half minutes remaining molly picked him out the back with prior you can see sal on screen charging back out there both surfers of course do a lot of training and this is one of those days that test your fitness we saw in the first 10 minutes i think they were caught inside by clean up sets maybe two or three times with two or three ways to set so a lot of duck diving and as shannon said we've got the tide running out so we might see a little bit more of that over the next hour or so nice conditions though as far as wave surface goes the wind just light out of the south forecast to swing further around the southeast then we're going to see your classic east northeast sea breeze quite strong 15 to 20 knots this afternoon so that's why we're keen to get the surfers out there this morning and just with the uh semis and final left in both division of course you're watching the sister revolution central coast pro a qs 3000 3000 points up for grabs 8 000 first prize so it's a big event biggest event of the uh the year so far here in australia and uh the final event of the vissler pro surf series it's been a pretty good month of surfing oh it's been so exciting each of the stops between boomerang port stevens maruba and now here we've had great waves on offer really solid surf to start off the year at boomerang followed up with the opportunity to surf at one mile point in port stevens typically that event at port stephens runs at berube beach open face beach break but because of wind conditions and a great bit of east in the swell we were able to run it one mile and it was such a cool point break set up um most of the surfers whether they won or lost their heat so many of like even of a four-man heat multiple surfers were coming in with excellent scores on the board yeah lots of eights and nines getting thrown down they were just so excited to be able to surf a point break for the for a qs competition and then to show up at marouba conditions were small difficult especially into finals dave it was so small and so it tested that that competitive side that mental capacity of our athletes and now to show up again at avoca beach six days of competition every single day has been firing reggae we've seen the swell original swell peaked died off we had one day that was maybe slightly small but not even actually yeah not like small no it was good that day so that was on thursday and uh yeah they just kicked in the gear again so yeah with that little easterly swell when it dropped off it was still at the uh three foot mark and then the southeast picked in uh southwest kicked in yesterday and it's been um pumping as you can see peaked overnight but still very solid waves coming through here at avoca so just under nine minutes remaining molly picklin with priority and in the lead at the moment she's got uh 7.4 and a 4.17 sour that's 6.67 those two highest scores it's just that the marginal difference came in uh molly's weight being a little bit more a little bigger and her last maneuver being a touch more critical and it's giving her that advantage at the moment so sarah looking for a 4.91 see this set coming through is molly having a look at this and think she is committed molly picklin now nice smooth face ahead of her drives off the bottom big hook into the lip gets hung up and doesn't ride out of that one so unfortunately for molly she's opened the door for sally fitz sally now with priority then yet 4.91 that score will not go into molly's top two wow so seven minutes 45 seconds on the clock molly picklem massively goes down over the falls yeah absolutely charging today though and molly is one of those competitors that's already qualified for the 2021 challenger series yeah so these events are super important to her she would love to increase her her points on the qualifying series but based off of her results last year she came in fifth reggae at the 2020 sydney surf pro which was that first challenger series on the calendar she had a fifth place finish at the qs 5000 the doyle partners women's pro in newcastle yep and so that really set her up for a great start to the 2020 year and that's where the wsl has worked with those athletes that had excellent starts we saw someone like matt banting he was also nearly qualified for the championship tour in 2021 out of the first few events of 2020 the way that jackson andre had done a couple years before so it's top six have been the top six women the top ten men right so molly picklem is one of those few that already has that secured yeah and uh isn't she gonna rattle a few cages because i'm she'll she'll qualify she'll make the world tour absolutely and she's one of those surfers you know we're seeing a lot more on the women's side where she's got great power she's got great structure to her um just kind of traditional attack to a wave but she's got such an incredible air game yeah really we've seen so much footage that has dropped from her over the years footage at the wave pool in melbourne like getting into some of those opportunities to train similar to a sierra kerr or a sky brown where they're getting time in waves that allow them to just work on airs it's really exciting to see where a young surfer like molly 18 years old is gonna take the women's championship tour in the future up against women like sally fitzgibbons who are dropping the biggest heirs so far on the women's side yeah exactly and uh yeah i think yeah you're talking about head down urban surf at melbourne and does give you that ability just to hit the same same section time after time after time if you have seen it with sarah kerr over there in uh at waco and other pools in the u.s just really getting those airs dialed in perfectly and looks like sally having a look at this wave there she goes sally fitzgibbons now down the line she's going to come off the bottom and she goes just hooks a turn into the lip and wants to get around this section but once again shuts down now look at that 4.91 i don't know whether that's going to do it one turn she needs to get that second one in and um i think molly might hang onto that lead now we're at the five-minute mark so uh molly picklin we're waiting on that last score for sale molly of course with priority our first election and the opportunity to get rid of that 4.17 here's the replay so driving off the bottom nice carving turn out of the top but unfortunately that second maneuver wasn't there wave just shutting down and uh we'll just wait and see whether it improves on that 4.6 well beautiful swoop in that wave great style from sally fitzgibbons but she's chasing that 4.91 to take that advancing position over molly sally dropped an air in the tweed coast pro that specialty event and it was one of the biggest airs ever done on the women's side of competition especially at that level obviously it wasn't a challenge a championship tour event but it had the caliber of that with the surfers that were in the draw and for sally to pull something like that out we know she's worked on that also over the years and kind of been one of the front runners on the women's side of the tour so it's pretty cool to see a match up like that where we've got this this youngster we've got about a 10-year difference in ages now between molly and sally because when you said sal was on tour for 11 years now she was trying to work out her age i think she was about 17 when she came on board and uh yeah it's a long time isn't it plenty of time you know like lane didn't win a world title until she was in the 30s right you know so maybe a few there no it's pretty scary i mean sally fitzgibbons it's like man she's got such an incredible um history to her like so many incredible rankings but to come second to the world title three times yeah like heartbreaking yeah the skill and the talent that this woman possesses and then to come back towards that i mean she's still got years ahead of her well that's exactly right towards the end of her career now rather than at the start of it to then qualify and take one of those positions for the olympics alongside steph gilmore yeah like it's so exciting to see sal raised that occasion and then to start setting that standard for someone like molly for some of these younger competitors or macy callihan that's coming from the next heat who's a fresh one to the championship tour she's only a couple years in only 19 years old and to see where these women can start taking professional surfing it's so exciting yeah it is indeed as we see molly just swinging around blocking sound she's going on this right good section just beautiful snap out of the top she's got to hit this lip and she goes critically for it but unfortunately that wave just shut down pretty quickly so um molly picklin there with two and a half minutes remaining one quick snap on that right hander probably well obviously the first right we've seen um ridden today i don't know if it's going to get rid of a 4.17 having a replay here so driving off the bottom good turn out at the top if she could have got up now but that wave yeah sort of as she came up sort of changed her mind almost and just got swatted and his sal big carve out of the top and the second is she going to get a third one in she goes for it that could have been the one she was looking for chasing down a 4.91 just on two minutes remaining well that was a dedicated section for sally to charge into great couple turns to start off with and she could be looking to shake that 4.6 but molly picklem will we see any changes to the results sally with a great first opening turn connects into a second one and then the dedication to go for that final lip was absolutely insane yeah she had to go for it and two good solid turns there at first it was beautiful uh whether or not it changes to 4.6 but she is looking for a 4.91 so molly back in priority sally's second priority so mueller control the lineup in the final 70 seconds of this this heat sally fitzgibbons threw everything in that wave it should look like after that second turn i thought he should come she's going to get it because molly's right wasn't doing it for her but then molly just smashing that lip coming unstuck as well so just under one minute sally fitzgibbons now with priority molly just uh couldn't ride out of that one so a lot of ways within these final five minutes i think that's uh they've had two or three waves each and uh but it hasn't changed the score so they're frankly trying to build on those fours molly would love to get rid of that 4.17 40 seconds remaining sally fitzgibbons with priority she's in the lineup it's going to be her last throw of the dice with 30 seconds to go can she get in this wave no she can't and i don't think the one behind is going to stand up either let's just have a look here getting she's still got time on the clock 20 seconds look at this set rolling through is it gonna be too big yeah it's gonna break on her head oh that's such a shame so scores in from those last exchanges nothing that is enough to break out of that four point range to change the situation on either side yeah and molly picclum has done so well to hold it down she found that 7.4 she opened up with that 4.17 and she has locked herself a spot into the finals she already has a win on the vissla new south wales pro surf series out at the great lakes pro and now she's looking to take another sally fitzgibbons goes down in the women's the first women's semi-final reggae ellis it's been great we'll be right back with semi-final number two freya prom up against macy callahan right after this [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] and welcome back to the action we have just seen sally fitzgibbons go down to the mighty molly pickle molly picclum finding her spot into the women's side of the final for the sister revolution central coast pro and sal giving some autographs to the local kids it's so great to see so many groms showing up to support the world's best on a day like this finals day here at avoca my name is shannon hughes joined in the booth by michael crisp and out in the lineup we have macy callahan and freya prum good morning crispy yeah good morning shannon and good morning listeners beautiful waves well and what a contest that first one was sally fitzgibbons really throwing it all the way down the line and molly pickle them just getting it done well here we go for the marine bill and bourne this is freya prime up and riding on the first wave of the heat well just getting a quick score in and look at that detonation that last section shannon that was such a solid sized wave down carve under the face under the lip and she'll ride out clean macy callahan opens up with a three-point score so macy now sitting out the back with priority we've got 30 minutes on the clock for the semifinals crispy and talk us through this replay yeah good little start macy's already got a 3-0 so here we go just getting under that lip being ahead of it being a quick snap it's other than that scooping her up and throwing her off so good choice good start freya prom macy callahan also a three all right so it's great to see these women get a couple waves under their belt quickly just a 2.5 on the scoreboard for that first afraid prom as we take a look at the replay from first of macy callahan drives in under the lip connects well on the start and decides rather than commit to that in section yeah even last night i went out there for a couple of hours with a few athletes and with some commentators and i'll tell you what it was so tricky out there just to get a feel of it you know the athletes it's so challenging but there's still opportunity and it's getting it done and that's why the events are 30 minutes so great for world surf league surfing new south wales supporting the athletes to bring those extra moments for finals day today and it's been such a good lead up especially from yesterday we showed up and it was just firing throughout the entire day you know we had the the men's round of 32 began we knew we were going to run into men's round of 16 most likely and then the women's quarterfinals were on hold but the surf just continued to clean up through the day it continued to build it continued to stay really nice with the right winds and so they pulled the trigger ran both quarter finals and that has set us up for a short opportunity to run through semis and finals this morning and to really capitalize on the best of the conditions on offer yeah definitely and it's been such a great sister revolution events the new south wales pro surf series can't believe we've been at four events getting it done getting it done safely working with the new south wales government world surf league all the crew well done and surfing new south wales well here we go and having a look down the line macy callahan on her backhand snaps into the lip for one big maneuver well she's actually familiar big moments on big left world junior champion a world turf league as a junior down bombo and here she is 20 21 macy callahan again a bit sharper really placed nice and again timing driving timing completion and look at the groms surfing with their heroes getting ready to pedal out oh we got some safety pack on there he's got a little flotation device make sure he's okay out in these solid sized sets of course crispy you would know from being in the water yesterday afternoon it's a little smaller surfing in the corner by the point but being that we've got this competition zone running a lot of surfers are paddling out down the beach towards shark tower i saw way out the back i don't know if we saw it but there was three guys out there and they were on rhino chases and a couple of them got some big waves and robbo from world circle we're like it's like 3 to 13 feet out there it is huge it is absolutely macking today which we love to see on finals day it's going to be a great challenge for each one of our athletes paddling out macy callahan has dropped in a four point ride for that last one a 4.83 to better her situation that puts freya prum now into that priority situation out the back like you mentioned freya prum from the far south coast down in marumbula and it's great to see her making it into the semi-finals here this is her best result today to make it to the semi-finals of a qs 3000. yeah she's really worked hard you know over a decade of experience and that's hope for all those people who really get down in the shadows when they lose or bear out in the early rounds and freya says keep on kicking goals keep on trying and to make the dream of the challenger series thank you world surf league that dream becomes more reality with each heat and freya prom getting it done we've got her up and riding now drives in under the lip and she'll go down under once again it was great to hear that interview with her crispy yesterday i mean how beautiful and encouraging it was for her to advance through to take out a championship tour competitor in isabella nichols you could see how much it meant to her it did there was a smile when she realised when she turned around and talking about smiles and emotion molly pickle congratulations molly you're through to the final yeah thanks so much it was a cracking heat with sal so i'm just stoked to have made it through got a little bit scrappy but i did what i had to do to get through so yeah well you certainly scrapped your way through those first couple ways but then you found that 7.4 talk to us about finding a really solid wave in a lineup like this today yeah it's definitely they're out there for sure so i found that one and sal actually went the first one and i was like oh my god she's gonna drop a score of me and then i turned around and saw my opportunity and then just fully went for it and then it was a well-paced wave so i was wasn't too hard to get that score but i'd struggled the whole all of my surfing because like my grip pad just fell off oh now and that's like right in the crucial spot i mean i should probably be able to return without it but yeah i struggled to make all my turns after that wild well you've already got a win in the vista new south wales pro surf series at boomerang congratulations on that one you're looking now into the finals and you've already got that spot in the challenger series what does it mean for you today to be into another final without so much pressure on the line for sure without the pressure although even if i wasn't in the challenges i still like i didn't even know if i was but i guess i was just kind of super level-headed with just trying to make heat but um yeah to make a final here at home is just something else it means so much more because my home crowds literally straight in front of me cheering me on so i'm super excited well we're so excited to see you go get ready for that final thanks so much guys have a good day you stoked man what a tricky one though with that tail pad sliding off i know and just being honest like she got it done at the start and the middle and even saying you know that was a reason why she didn't complete those last few turns or even that doubt that's set in because the pillar of equipment is just not firing a hundred percent so great to see her come out on top she's had a few matchups with sally fitzgibbons in the past not in that one-on-one setting but in those you know four women in the lineup and she has never come out with the win she's always come in second to sell so that's a personal best for molly and i'm sure would be feeling really good knowing where her future is set with that you know definitely to be the best you got to beat the best and well sally isabella nichols macy callahan in this heat they are the best in world surf league championship tour surfing and the level innovation progression be great to see like they are big waves but if anyone goes for an air today we could have an air show again here we go so exciting driving in on her backhand just comes in under the lip for fred i mean she is charging on some big waves which we know is classic of freya coming from the far south coast yeah definitely familiar in these big moments and on big waves she's had some great qs moments like a quarterfinal finish at maroubra in waves similar to this and talking about similar all those hours the mastery of skills those 10 000 hours you've got macy callahan won the world juniors back in bombay a world surf league as a junior in big lefts like this that's what scaz was saying our national director and again such a history and timing that's where all those one percenters come into play now with confidence and performance and it's reflecting back on moments like that when you surf to heat that's had similar conditions something like that for macy callahan and macy grew up here in avoca beach so she'd be feeling comfortable at her local lineup although she now resides on the tweed coast up in the far uh new far north new south wales spends a lot of time training up there with that crew of women uh steph gilmore and dimity stoyles there's such a great pack that are pushing each other that are surfing in some of the best waves and we've really seen that bring um just so much improvement and so much style into macy callahan surfing as she's worked her way into that championship tour conversation yeah definitely and it really you know supporting each other as well as seeing what the other athletes are doing again with boards with level maneuvers and again being on good ways more regularly the key up there at the north you find that it's warmer it's more consistent and then when you want that big wave charge you get a few swells or head down for a strike mission way down south what's he want macy callahan in the lead there's our beautiful drone shot thank you destination new south wales this is the sister revolution central coast pro qs 3000 presented by mad max the last day of burritos at the beach i'm excited i'm just going to go lucky pot maybe the vegetarian what about you it's been such a good thing to have mad max support so many events in the vista new south wales pro service series we're always excited to have some mexican down the beach and keeping us fueled macy callahan reflecting back on some other moments in her career crispy you had mentioned it the other day even that final that she had at the roxy pro in france back in 2018 yes again hassagore huge solid beach break so for macy she's definitely able to rise to the occasion in conditions like this yeah and i still remember that at berubi as well that qs6000 to make the world surf league tour those big moments where she took i think she went in the final that was two years ago 2019 great waves great turning big long lines and really took it to the skies getting a great win that's right that's when she came second to isabel and nick that's right isabella won won the world surf league qs macy made it through getting those heats and they were big moments and they will play into it right now 16 minutes remaining freya prime looking for a six four seven now for you what does that six four seven look like one of those big ones or say one of those medium ones with really the two for one deal we saw with sally fitz going for that third turn may have been that that error in the sense of instead of squaring up on that second one thinking about that next turn really was that moment or one of the few moments where it could have been worked out different yeah really being able to find i think that combination surfing is going to be crucial today that's what we've seen reflected in those scores where sally got into that six point range with a combination on a medium-sized wave but then to get up into that seven plus that we saw mali it's got to have that size and that critical section as well freya prom with a strong paddle there unable to get into it she is already sitting in second priority so we won't see a priority shift there macy callahan just patiently waiting out the back yeah and that's what priority does so priority 2 means that if red paddles for a wave can take it has right away but freya prime under priority 2 because she can scrap around on the inside try to to turn some lemons into gold and fray a prime looking for a 6 four seven out of a perfect ten and she has been dropping good scores and some excellent scores with some critical surfing these past few events down to 15 minutes on the clock coming up next men's semi-finals jacob wilcox and caius king will be in that semi-final number one as we see a huge set rolling through the lineup and then matt banting and reef hazelwood will be coming up in semifinal number two yeah very exciting also for the vissler central coast pro we're currently in the women's division sister evolution central cross pro qs 3000 all those watching and listening thank you john moss of paul norden all the crew and then the world surf league starkey will hayden smith and everyone tuning in hope you're enjoying it and there is the rock star he he has been really humming through the heat and there is adam dawson our super coach he's got freya prom out there and kais king still in this event and we are down to finals day finals day so much excitement we've already seen freya in that conversation on finals day she made it into the quarterfinals at the great lakes pro our opening event in the series she came up with a 9th place finish at port stevens and a 17th place at maroubra so this is obviously her best result in the series great to see her come back when there's the most points on the line but also the best results of her career so far to make it this far in a 3 000. yeah definitely you know her her partner patty is here and her coaches here all the fans are watching and family and friends so i shout out to you from marimbula and also at the gold coast and well there it is took that wave it didn't change anything i'm just getting caught inside that amazing drone shot really showed there's a lot of sand moving at that end section very shallow as well and here we go heat leader macy callahan up and riding drives into that first turn nice and critical goes in for a second maneuver under the lip and we'll ride out clean wow that is smart surfing and she will extend no doubt 13 minutes remaining that was a big wave and they were two classic turns because she used speed she read it well let's look at the wave replay bigger style wave nice and tight in the pocket displacement of the top water but just getting down being ahead of the lip because that sucks out dredges out and that'll squash you definitely will we saw a broken board yesterday from kalani rob we saw reef hazelwood buckled aboard as well and those heavy sections on the inside so it's great to see a slight bit of safety but also nice controlled surfing from macy callahan as we see fraprum making her way out to the back line again and we've got that rip developing it's gonna get more shallow as the morning goes on too because that low tide is only at 11 15. well look at that beautiful drone shot thank you destination new south wales and all the crew fresh air broadcast and it's like there's those moments where you know what catch the wave whip around that's one way to to attack that because there is that corner piece where you can get out a lot easier in that corner here at avoca but harder to say from you know the couch over here and there it is beautiful drain shot look at that wide angle of volca free surfers out there and surf life saving here such a beautiful place thank you to the local lifeguards as well here at avoca beach and also the accommodation of volca beach resort we've all checked out today i hope you have you haven't left your bags in the room but they have been amazing and i can't wait to get back talking to my kids and wife this morning they want to come to avoca and it looks so beautiful on screen like yes it is living it here it's great to be here again yeah it's such a beautiful area we're so thankful for the support from the local community to have us running events here for the last few years and we've got a big score on the board crispy macy callahan drops in a 7.33 for that last wave yeah wave of the heat that first moment that was the maximum points in that score and then the second one really gave the nod from the judges our world surf league tour judges and experienced former athletes on the highest tier and now driving some great scores thank you world turf league judges down to 10 minutes 20 seconds on the clock macy callahan with a commanding lead it's looking similar to that previous heat with that seven point ride on the board freya prum chasing a big score of a 9.03 now to advance she's made it out to backline once again she had that tough paddle and she'll be setting herself up for this next set that's rolling through yeah definitely so macy callahan really ticking the boxes look at this one this is that biggest wave of the heat that first moment such a big turn and really powering into that next turn to get down before that scoops out that was a two-for-one deal and a 7-3-3 holding the keys to the final to take on molly picklin it's looking clearer unless freya prom gets it done on a really big wave and goes vertical that's what you know a 903 looks like maybe one that's really good that has three possible sections and really going to town on that one we'll have to wait and see what happens through the rest of the day we've got some great conditions on offer the conditions today pretty similar to the final say that we had out here in 2019 when we saw these really solid lefts really coming alive the point was working that day there was a little bit more swell even than what we have now um doesn't look like we'll be heading to the point at all throughout today but these lefts have been on offer at avoca and a lot of these surfers have had that experience before yeah definitely and that's that recall that you want to remember those good memories but also not not you've got to unhook from those negative indicators and also those bad moments and say what can i stop what can i start what can i continue and moving through these heat semi final macy callahan getting it done seven three three and a four eight three in a commanding position and holding priority she looks very comfortable there just game plan tick we already saw macy callahan with a couple of heats at the end of last year the maui pro she came in with a round of 16 finish which is that ninth place finish she went down to lakey peterson in maui and it's just been great to see macy find that rhythm on the championship tour it's been a couple years now of course we all know that crazy story of her a couple years back of getting those wild card opportunities one after another where it was almost like she had a cheat year leading up to her first rookie year on the championship tour pretty amazing experience for someone to then walk into their rookie year having already surfed the majority of waves on the ct yeah definitely a rising star and she actually was the the part of the first talent id program with clancy dawson from surfing australia and and scares the national director when she was with that pathway support for these athletes and macy callahan with other emerging talent really getting supported with the coaches strength and conditioning in also the mental health space and helping drive all that in those moments and performance in surfing with a rash shirt on and again macy callahan the depths and breaths of as you said growing up here and now moving to the gold coast and yeah good friend and partner sheldon since also a great surfer as well in the men's card it's great to have him here but the talent pool also with the man so strong 160 and we're also down to four up next as well yeah down to the final four like you said great to see macy's boyfriend sheldon in the draw he did really good but it's come down to those top four jacob wilcox and kais king will be paddling out in the next heat for men's semifinal number one and then matt banting and reef hazelwood in semifinal number two wow matt banting the reigning champion from last year's avoca central coast pro and the finalist in the year 2019 when the finals ran right here on this left yeah it's been such a consistent place this beautiful evoker there's the drone shot live macie callahan in red she holds priority just staying right doing all the right things staying under here she goes pulls the trigger first big snap to start off with and comes in more vertical on the finish buddy jacks that's it that's that tough section just went with the lip then instead of projecting ahead of it and getting it early with a bit more speed but what she does do is doesn't give an opportunity for freya prom on that wave to chip away and drop that 2.5 so pressure and swing goes back to frayer prompt she'll now hold priority hoping for one of two things a really big wave to go vertical on or start with a better score to chip away that 1216 combo say something like a six and a six five for freya prime in under six minutes great insight and talk us through this last of macy callahan yeah nice little pick with priority and again that second turn really drove it up there would have been an amazing score probably a second highest but just got caught up and the timing just a bit late and landing just not there down to five minutes on the clock freya prum the chemist from roombuild the far south coast of new south wales sitting with priority out the back chasing a big score of a 9.032 advance over our championship tour competitor macy callahan and an exciting week of surfing that we've had here at avoca we have been so blessed with swell throughout the entire window yeah uh autumn summer and autumn from february to august it just comes alive the whole east coast it pretty much guaranteed either on the corner spots of points you've got cross shore and then also when that sour wester comes as well it really just kicks on and it's amazing where you wake up and you just guarantee that offshore breeze just got to start to get a bit of rubber and talking about rubber sister revolution and visla dropping some big wetsuits the cartons have all arrived so check it out www.vistla.com and wow look at that backwash i feel like we're a bombo that was beautiful that was huge and how was that one cooper chapman it was a great replay hitting that massive wipeout yesterday and he getting an equal ninth well done to all those surfers and athletes getting their campaign done but there is one that just well jacob wilcox just yesterday in his heat he just came out of the gate so strong so fast a bit like macy callahan in this heat you got to bring the energy you got to bring the belief absolutely believing is so important and putting in that work behind the scenes watched jacob wilcox drop into a massive left this morning as the contest was just getting ready to start during the free surf so he's already feeling really comfortable in these conditions this morning and it has been just a great journey to the end of this nice mention about those wetsuits dropping with vista and sister evolution perfect timing because it's starting to cool down we've had some cooler temperatures the last few days as we start to head into the australian winter it's been a great summer with some great waves on offer but i think everyone's excited to see more days like this and more of these conditions shaping up through the autumn and into the winter yeah definitely so well winding down this second heater it looks like macy callahan has put the screws in to get to the final to take on molly picklem here at the sister revolution central coast pro finals day qs 3000 stop number four on the new south wales pro surf series and presented by mad max i am going to miss it but i'll tell you what you can head to marubo or head to erin or on your way out and get a burrito bowl and also i i really love the smooth drinks as well the watermelons or the kombucha just keeping yourself hydrated with water all the gut good bacteria drinks a good key as well thank you mad max the fresh mexican final two minutes on the clock freya prom sitting with priority out the back and it seems to be the story in conditions like this where one of those surfers will lock into a really solid score and then it's just those battle that battle for those mid-range scores to really try to fight through to that finish i just like the way macy has started well like freya prom had a similar start but just in the middle got a bit stuck got a bit wide probably lost away out there it's really hard as i said we've all been out here in the night time and i'll tell you what not setting a foot wrong is macy callahan a seven three three every wave she has extended her lead and that is building the house starting small building those biorhythms those positive energies through the body through wave selection turn selection just ticking the game plan and getting it done down to the final minute it is a beautiful morning here in avoca and we have already seen our first women's women's finalist decided molly picklem took out a huge win over the olympian sally fitzgibbons so we'll see macy callahan matching up against her unless we see freya drop in that near excellence well that near perfect score in the last few seconds i'm not going to put it out of the game because i've seen it in these big moments bring it and get here so she has done the last four events but it is a tough half especially in these you've got to be on the best wave there are some best ways but well it probably took me about two hours to get one last night but these 30 minute heats i do go quick 25 seconds remaining here we go up and riding on her backhand freya prum driving into that first turn nice snap to start off with connects with the lip for a huge finish and she'll be feeling the disappointment on that one yeah at least she gave it a go and i'll tell you what that was the one she needed about the mid half so well just getting caught but she can hold her head high let's look at the wave replay nice first term as she jams the snap under there looks for the second just kept staying with the lip really going to project out of that to land it but so easy to do when well when you're on it there it is so she can have a big smile and that is her best result and that is means macy callahan through to the final macy callahan into the finals against molly picclum it's going to be an amazing showdown but first the men's semi-finalists jacob wilcox and caius king will be right back after this [Music] [Music] man [Music] it's this is the motivation [Music] well welcome back to finals day and yes we are new south wales events are on this is the vissler central coast pro qs 3000 we are in the men's division my name is crispy and join with me welcome back reggae ellis thank you chris bee a pleasure to be here and what a heat we've got coming up semi-final number one jacob wilcox and kais king and uh yeah just watching the that last women's semi-final from down there on the beach yeah some good ways out there it is just some big sets still coming through up the beach and uh yeah did you notice the north shelley board riders be pretty happy um you did you picked that one yeah look at it look at that just big ugly waves up there and um yeah it's solid as and they're still all peeking way outside yeah three to eight feet on the face yeah we call it as it is and a three-year-old you get one turnout surf reports you get one turnout there you're winning and i'll tell you what getting it done may see callahan and i'll tell you what the world junior champion getting it done on the left again she got it done in the finals at at uh berube beach and then avoca getting it done to the final to take on molly pickle thank you sister revolution we'll be back with that final but right now this is the viscera central coast pro for the men's and they are out there these two titans jacob wilcox he just comes out of the gate like yesterday i wonder if you know who's going to get the first exchange you can see them paddling around staying together trying to find the spot trying to find the wave but we have papa king's young pup and he has been grinding just doing things right learning these last four events and that's what i've loved the different winners in the men's and women's you know but the consistency of some of these athletes yeah for sure the consistency is uh as i say cream rises to the top but kaiser sort of every uh heat sort of improving as we see look at this beautiful drone shot as his solid set coming through and swinging around jacob wilcox taking off looking really deep needs to get around this section he does throws it up into the lip oh my gosh a critical turn and he he made that so made it the ball how was the oohs in ours like i was down the beach first seat as well you can feel it you can hear it all the kids are down there the all the locals as well as the big surf fans yeah and all those live too yeah there's a big crowd of spectators down there but i did notice they're playing at covert safe which is good they have a little replay here dang critical turn and he rode out of that gets uh swamped at the end but that was a completed maneuver so yeah he stepped up a gear he was like in fifth gear then yeah and he just banged around well back foot power projection and really landed it and then the nice little hair flick as well yeah you got to have the hair flick you know that just makes it yeah makes it look a bit more polished well you reckon around that one nice you know day six judges i feel they're gonna just sit around the four five one big turn because they don't want to box themselves in they don't they don't want to open too much no they want to be just right with the critical turning in the critical sections on a good wave well you think yeah they want to box themselves in because potentially uh we'll see two of those maneuvers you know on one wave you saw jacob do that in the free surf this morning so a lot of potential out there the judges will be having a good think about this one and there's that overview that uh look at it yeah sunny uh sunny avoca beach here on the central coast and we have the local man representative down this on day number one terrigal a member of parliament and again beautiful drone images look at the rolling hills again destination new south wales so well if you haven't been to avoca you're looking to return check it out visit new south wales.com and also avocad beach hotel what a great accommodation we've been at as well yeah one of our partners there the vocal beach hotel salt water um cafe is pretty good for dinner yeah good music yeah she was good that girl wasn't she i'll tell you what the penny i did recommend that yeah you did and i had it i heard that solid bailey had it everyone was loving the penne garlic but i'll tell you what you had to get the chewing gum after that maybe well i did yeah i was worried about what that would do to the coventry booth here today but i figured everyone's dealt with it at some stage during the week all right there it is well jacob wilcox opens with a good score that's a great level 6.67 there is the yardstick right there reggae ellis yeah well it's a good solid score it was a really critical turn and the judge has rewarded that big wave the exception big commitment yeah and the hair flick doesn't come into it just to mention to all those viewers yeah that's right yeah that's just an add-on that's like a hockey remember i still love hockey when you used to do yeah that's why he grew his hair so long it was for the dramatic effect so um yeah so jacob wilcox laying down a big score there chris king now he knows what he needs to do um you know these 30-minute heats are giving the surfers uh the opportunity to be selective with the waves we saw of course on the first seat of the day uh hit the 10-minute mark without a wave being ridden which leads to a restart um but you know but sally fitzgibbons and molly being the first heat in the water was difficult to sort of read the situation were way out the back so it's a different complexion when you're looking to compete as opposed to just going out and see how many bombs you can get there is live action and that is your man christ king he was just so smooth and and what i love about you got the goofy foot of jacob wilcox again looking to eye out the challenger series the world surf league to get back on tour had a great few wild cards in the 2019 and 2020 and then christ king the emerging star he's had some great wild cards over hawaii but we're talking about the wild cards we'll be with macy callahan very shortly remember yesterday thumbs up she can hear us thumbs up thumbs down right what's going on we're gonna roll with this macy can you hear us yeah oh cool macie how are you doing she speaks hello hello well congratulations how are you feeling congratulations through to the final talk us through the game plan going into that and then how it unfolded yeah um i'm really really happy i've always really wanted to do well at this event um last time i actually did this and i got knocked in my first heat so um yes it's really nice to be back here and with my friends and family in front of a home crowd and yeah i just really wanted to get two you know two good waves it's really really hot out there's heaps of backwash so um yeah i'm just really happy with how i went talk about when you're out there what are you lining up with is it the pine trees is it the white car you know what helps you in getting that position to go along with your plan um i don't have like a particular lineup but um i don't know i don't i never like to be too far that way so um i like to be further towards the point so um that's kind of like where i like to sit otherwise you kind of get stuck down there yeah well you've got uh it's going to be a great final up against molly pickling of course you guys are from uh saint beach north shelley board riders um the young upstart what are your thoughts yeah um this will be really exciting um molly's surfing so well and it's it's been really cool watching her grow up and now she's um yeah dominating the qs series and i can't wait to see her on the cet one day and um yeah it's gonna be a really good matchup i'm really excited a little bit nervous at the same time so um yeah i'm just really happy to be in the final and get some good heats under my belt uh last question what is it like putting the jersey back on with having such a break from events what how's that feeling been yeah it's been amazing um gosh we've had such a long time off and um it's been really hard not for just for everybody in general um but it's really really really fun being back in the jersey and yeah hopefully the next few ct events run smoothly and yeah it all turns out well awesome yeah well we've got solid ways out there looking forward to the final are you going relax and we'll uh see you in a few heats thank you there you go macy callahan looking looking good out there you know she's such a great surfer and uh she always you know i've seen a few times in solid surf she excels you know so definitely psyched out there a former world junior champ at bombo that world surf league event berube making the finals making the world surf league tour for 2020 and then right now looking for the final at a home in front of home crowd and knowing that time on those banks like she said without giving away too much of the plan i love the way she told a little bit but left a bit that's right just in case well during that interview jacob wilcox caught a second wave these two wave totals now sitting at 13.94 uh kaios king he caught that under kaiser's priority so that's where you're you're in the rhythm with the ocean and he has been rhythmic these last six days jacob wilcox here also like me macy alluded to a couple of disappointments building through those qs events the vista pro surf series one two and three they got eliminated a few early times and this was where you know the stop start continue comes in what are they going to stop doing what are they going to start doing because the definition definition of incentive if you're doing the same thing and it's not getting results it's a bit insane so these guys and also the women well done to macy callahan getting it done in the qs 3000 so jacob wilcox looking to make one step further to the final coming out of the gate stronger 1394 yeah what a start that is a really good start we've got 18 minutes left and this car is king he's going to need to lock in a good solid score on his first wave he is out there with priority serving the black singlet of course and yet to open his account so tricky conditions out there it's not easy to find a scoring wave and jacob has uh thrown down the gauntlet with a couple of good scores and caius knows he needs to lock in something similar on his first wave to stay in touch so he'll have to choose wisely yeah and you know he's going to keep warm he's going to paddle he's going to stand on his board like you can see live action right now on screen of evoker this is the vista pro surf series stop four and it's great to have the support of vissler sister revolution and well destination new south wales amazing drone shots look at that live action sand beach two event two competitors and our next two that's going to be matt banting from port macquarie taking on reef hazelwood emerging stars sunshine coast with those pools yesterday you know they were looked really sharp in those quarter finals and as these two surface so because we're down to the uh final day here of the uh and the final day of the whole vistler surf series been running uh four events over the last uh four to six weeks this one the wsl qs 3000 carrying three thousand points for first prize and yeah eight thousand dollars uh oh prizes that's amazing thirty thousand dollars thank you vissler yep thank you sister revelation revolution and check him out on the website www.vissler.com new wetsuits new clothes yeah containers they've been dropped in by helicopters it's great to see bringing the helicopters in with the new bissell wetsuits yes yeah that's uh good yes all the new stuff is in store now and uh you know there you go so jacob 7.27 or 6.67 so two good solid scores cars king he needs to get moving he'll be looking to lock in a high six at least on his opening ride to stay in touch we're at the 16 minute mark here in the semi-final number one of the vista central coast pro what i do love is that 6670 opened with class and you know you want to teach your athletes to open building house by just getting one or two turns on a medium score he went to town on a big set wrist at all started with a 667 and well got the legs firing and also the focus firing and the 727 picked up under priority so kais king just needs to get a wave around the five six range to be within marching distance we saw with freya prom it's a lot of pressure when you're on the back end and you're needing an excellent score a high nine really puts the pressure through the thought process as well yeah without a doubt we see a little set coming through here and he's pulling the trigger kai's king now just driving off the bottom it's going to hook it up critically into that lip rise out of that one like it yep so just one solid turn you know will it uh match that 6.67 we saw from jacob on his first wave we'll wait and see but um when we check out the replay you'll see just um sets it up nicely and hooks it critically into the lips so full closeout taking on that lip i don't know i feel it's a really good start in his 15 minute heat he's held priority for about 12 minutes time he needed to pull the trigger and that he does a hit and then nice little flick let's see what it comes in as so needs a 1394 combo but priority now goes back to jacob wilcox it's all about decision time for him now how he places the next wave he'll wait for either kai's king to come but if a really good wave gets in the place look at this one with the drone shot i thank you destination new south wales thank you world surf league and see that free surfer out the back just paddling out to that wide bomb yep it's about three to 13 feet out there yeah we'll just keep paddling up the beach so there's some solid sets coming through uh in front of the shark tower to our north and solid sets coming through in front of the pines in our competition area and there's that shot the red that of course is jacob wilcox out the back with priority and the 5.7 there for kais king so back on yeah back on indeed now needing an 8.24 to move into first so that gets him on the board uh marginally just under a point lower than jacob's first wave jacob the advantage coming through is a little bit more critical and the wave was a little bit bigger but cars would be happy to get things moving now and the 13 minute mark approaches plenty of time in these 30 minute semi-finals and uh i think we're looking at a 35-minute final for both men's and women's when we get underway yeah it's great great time and support for the athletes to find opportunities and we've seen that even with the first heat of the day that big wash through set that we just saw live on screen that went through look at the beautiful images thank you destination new south wales this is avoca there is north of oca that's been pretty empty lately because it's been big macking waves and look at that swell around the three meter mark cool that's seven to 13 feet just charging through to the north of big south well pushing up the coast here in new south wales it's been a fairly consistent summer per swell and it looks like jacob wilcox with priority stroking into this one long wall ahead of him just running down the line hooks it really fast out of the lip and another one takes that lip unfortunately just uh his board just gets buckled from underneath him there and uh yeah that was potentially looking like a good another good score i just love how he flies into the wave nice angled takeoff let's look at the wave replay thank you new south wales government nice little angle look at this strikes a blow right at the top nice back foot power low center and just stands a bit tall hits a few bumps yeah and well he can afford those moments because he's in the lead with the top two scores and well this one will be an opportunity key back on the table for kai's king one wave eight two four needs to be an excellent wave a good looking wave with good looking opportunities and he's gonna need to go vertical two times yeah exactly to stay in touch he needs to lock in that score towards the very good and excellent range and that does come down for two turns as crispy said so kais king back out there with 11 and a half minutes remaining i wonder if he goes for this is where those moments very good with his aerial maneuvers and that is kai's king from byron bay shout out to papa king mama king and rasmus king all the kings of byron even danny wills and all the byron bay board riders would be tuning in supporting kais king in this event looking to go one step further into the final and he has been he's such a speedster natural footer yeah always speeding around with coach duff with the pack jagger bartholomew yeah freya prom a great little stabler surfers and supporting and again in this event this central coast pro event number four all right waiting patiently his priorities caius king of five seven looking to lock in his second wave i dare say he's gonna look for a wave and this is where all that time knowing what a wave's worth knowing the judging criteria all those moments now he's going to make those good choices and just clear the head clear the air and know when a wave comes i've got to extend the five seven yeah you gotta extend it by a couple of points so chris king the ball firmly in his court as far as decision making goes he's patiently at the waiting at the moment you see jacob wilcox just uh hovering around on the inside a little bit seeing if there's any sort of opportunity a little bit further in to get under kaiser's priority cars king out the back been one of the form surfers throughout the event obviously to get to this point but put on some great displays in the earlier rounds we've had uh a good variety of surf throughout the event this is the biggest uh surf we've had during the uh the six day run and yeah it started off with a good solid swirl out of the east with a touch of southeast didn't it dropped up a little bit on friday kicked in a gear yesterday again out of the south when i say dropped off on friday it was still really good you know the three foot mark with the even the occasional bigger set and we've had pretty favorable wins the whole time had with the cross chop maybe on friday afternoon with that sadly first hit but overall good conditions here for the uh bisla and sister revolution central coast pros but here we go on the inside having a little look but no take off there yeah priority two you can do that yeah and it he's really playing priority well when he's got priority he sits under and even now just sitting under creating to look you know just looking to create sorry opportunities to well sell him into a lemon regain priority and close the heat into the final be the first one in the final through the this central coast pro again the qs 3000 thank you world surf league thank you surfing new south wales this is finals day yeah of course coming up in semi final number two is going to be another cracker of a heat with matt banting and reef hazelwood look at the gallery down there they got hit by a set before too so the shopping trolley well it's got some water in there regularly yeah there's a lot of lenses down there you know um yeah looks like the old days when there was about 10 surf magazines in australia and everyone would be vying for a cover shot and of course now there's only what what still a few mags surfing world and tracks are still in there uh white horses still hanging in i think surfing life's still publishing yeah that's right all the crew they're watching and listening so keep it coming the social media don't forget again check out the website www.vistla.com look at the beautiful images there is well all the campers down there the beach marshall and all the judges look at the gallery yep and there is mad max tent there's our lunch down there on the beach again a covered safe this is events on spectators checking in and also all our athletes every day we service new south wales in conjunction with surfing new south wales but right now the athletes in the water the one in red in the lead from west australia jacob wilcox the goofy footer and timmy mack you know he's super coach yep versus good mate adam duffner king he's been waiting patiently for this second wave he knows what he needs to do so uh these smaller midway uh mid-sized sets aren't going to give the opportunities haven't been paying much attention to them looks like jacob had a little this one under priority jacob wilcox in the red on his forehand down the line just a little foam climb there comes around this section he wants to throw it up into the lid which he does rides out of that one smackdown beautiful close-out reentry wow jacob looking really sharp and fast that was the one christ king and this is where the priority wins come under priority christ king was out there and jacob wilcox look at him just filtering around the wave replay jumps up out of the gates look at that speed tag looks at the end section gets there with speed fastness grabs that rail again stomps it down i love the way he just bangs it down that's all that pull push flexibility yeah in the gym bringing it in the heat what a transfer jacob wilcox in the lead yeah he's still hanging in there as we see reef look at him yep so another goofy foot natural foot battle coming up in semi-final number two of the vistler central coast pro and uh reef was outstanding yes afternoon are those two turns i think we're gonna they're gonna be you know immortal in the brain yeah those two vertical turns well here we go firing up again with that everyone has a different you know ritual yeah you'd see mick fanning where he rubs his hand together a bit of meditation bit of wellness and then we got matt banting few little pops get those legs firing we saw kai's king with the headphones the skull candies loves just tuning in his dad's a rock star also so he loves metallica and gunners here we go kai's king look at this section off the bottom throws it critically into the lip wants to get around this can he get another turning he can throws it up again he's got a opportunity heading his way another nice turn and just rides out of that one so three good solid maneuvers there for kais king right on the five minute mark now he's chasing an 8.24 he's obviously going to reduce that uh deficit and that's his uh best wave uh much better than his first so three good solid turns there yeah let's look at the wave replay and look driving into this one waiting patiently and top and nice and vertical snapping around again getting that second moment look at him go back to the source of speed and bangs it out look at this section little hop skip and ollie on that one yeah well that third turn look a lot more critical on the replay you can see it just sort of that wave just dragged itself off that um shallow sandbank and boom so we'll just wait and see what that does exciting wave in the first turn yeah just straight off the bottom into that hooking lip well think about those up this is where the judges they've really separated those scores the five seven is last one that one turn the six six seven there it is well over the heat seven seven three kai's king bringing the bling he is back on but needs a second score of six two one now yeah well he's right back in the mix a six two one that's going to put the pressure right back on jacob wilcox so this is the highest score of the heat so far look at that driving up the bottom oh this is a critical turn in the lip just beautiful another nice slice out of the top and this one there's a lot to deal with in this last section and again he hooks it and just free pulls as that wave doubles up on the inside so a seven point seven three there for kyas king now needing a 6.21 that's really tightened things up it's going to be exciting three and a half minutes so uh kyus waited a long time for that wave but it was well worth the wait and he made the most of it high score of the heat so far and now needing a 6.21 now jacob with priority and uh well he's got to play a sensible game out here in these final three minutes cars will be looking to get back out there and put some pressure on straight away i wonder if he'll go to the big rights or sit he's got to really sit under jacob wilcox and we'll see this little cat and mouse battle again jacob will know where he is and he will just follow him again like a seagull on chips he will swarm he will hold and also not disrupt if a wave comes through and away a set of a couple will really throw it in the mix for a grandstand finish yes indeed as you see from that shot kai's king just duck diving under that uh that set looking to get back out into the lineup and two and a half minutes remaining so only needing now a 6.21 to overtake jacob wilcox and jacob his lowest score is a 6.67 his decision is does he just sit this one out and use his priority to make sure christ does not have another opportunity does he try and extend his lead probably not when it's that close 13.94 plays 13.43 so very similar conditions our way scores out there both serpers with a seven plus and of course they're 6.67 making the difference at the moment i love the way they've stuck to their strengths yeah jacob wilcox has continued his momentum what's working what's not big waves big turns really good use of priority and under priority whereas christ king a bit more patient but getting the best wave yep now these moments looking for one more but time the enemy these 30 minute heats a minute and a half remaining hoping and praying for a set of change yeah well you can see the uh situation there jacob just sitting a little bit outside christ right next to him now the big thing would be a multi-wave set looks like jacob's making a move and he is he's going to throw the dice so jacob wilcox looking to improve on a 6.67 he needs to get around this section and he doesn't that leaves the door open now for kais king a minute the mad max minute and this is where things go cray cray but kai's king has priority now so opportunity is 6-2-1 but time the enemy will need to bring it compose and fire on all cylinders yeah this is a great finish awesome finish what are your thoughts on jacob taking that wave kind of thought he might see he had to because you know christ king capable of hitting the lift one maneuver they both good at airs at any moment and we've seen some you know last ditch efforts in five seconds yeah right liam o'brien lobbing one over yeah many time and also reef hazelwood getting that moment like ryan callen and yesterday exactly now kaios king 25 seconds remaining needing a 6.21 here he goes he's having a little look at this wave is it going to stand up he's making a committed paddle last throw the dice for caius and down the line you can see this one he pulls in he ate it no he didn't oh wow i imagine he popped out he'd be so sick so he knew he had to throw the dice at that one and with five seconds remaining well he's not going to be left wondering he had a good shot at that an awesome 7.73 on that last uh previous to last wave and on that one just pulled in looking for the barrel as a he would have heard the countdown from the beach commentary team and uh there you go so jacob wilcox surfed a great heat moves through to the final of the vista central coast pro and we'll be back with semi-final number two right after this break [Music] erk likes the planet erk likes to surf erk likes to surf on his planet burke is impressed with vista's movement towards a more sustainable future he knows they're not perfect but sees their progress and likes the direction beaches clear of rubbish to learn more about vista sustainability efforts and join them in the pursuit for a better future head to vista.com forward slash to protect and surf and don't drop in on earth he doesn't like that [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] man [Music] this is the motivation [Music] [Music] welcome back to avoca beach as uh semi-final number two of the vistler central coast pro is underway and we have matt banting out there natural footage from port macquarie up against the sunny coast goofy footer reef hazelwood two of the formed surfers of the quarterfinals and there you can see a very stoked jacob wilcox through to the final after that uh really entertaining semi-final particularly the back half with chris king kaiser found the highest scoring wave of the heat with that 7.73 but looking right at the end trying to uh chase down a six and just didn't find it so yeah jacob he has been on fire as well and he is the first finalist of the men's very exciting to see jacob wilcox getting some photos with the local groms i've heard from a few of those surfers i mean jacob's so well known by this stage he'd have kids asking for autographs pretty often but a lot of those competitors that have you know knocked out in the early rounds that are just beginning their real qs campaigns coming out of the junior series like dylan moffitt and those kind of names starting to get their first autographs yeah and selfies and stuff and it's just so awesome so cool to see that from the local crew yeah they you know they'll be going wow it's going to be the annoying one how kelly handles it how does kelly do it how does sally do it you see her when she comes out of the water every time oh big turn there for maddie banting and does he get he does did really well and did really well not to take out his uh competitor but um yeah have a look at the replay here as we see just a swell lines pushing through nice sunny morning here at avoca beach solid waves coming through and we saw in that last wave matt banting a quick hack into the top and did a great job to land that second re-entry and miss reed hazelwood who was paddling back out i think so matt banting henry pacer looks like a seven here we go so maddie banting now quick in and out of that one not much to worry about there 25 minutes uh in this semi-final to go 30-minute semis of course reeve hazel with the goodwood uh out the back with priority and you can see uh matches getting caught inside a little bit after that wave it's one of the joys of uh beach breaks when you've got a few rogue sets coming through oh there's plenty of rogue sets on a day like this as we have a look at the beautiful avoca beach we're located here at the pines today literally just right underneath those four big pine trees great setup from surfing new south wales and all the crew to make this event possible and what an amazing location it's been for us to spend the week reggae yeah it has indeed it's been an awesome week here consistent surf throughout the entire event from uh he won a round one so yeah we've been blessed with some uh some good waves and we're finishing up finishing off with uh it's not perfect today but it's dramatic we've got some good solid waves coming through we've seen some awesome surfing so far and it will continue on of course this is uh one of these people will be joining jacob wilcox in the final in the sixth revolution women's final beyond after this and that is starring a couple of local surfers were both from uh north shelly up the beach macy callahan up against molly picklem so yeah it's uh happening here at avoca today yeah that's going to be an excellent match up on the women's side of the draw especially that those two would have grown up surfing against each other macy a few years older than molly is or just by a couple of years actually so pretty much could have been competing each other quite a lot as children now growing up as young women attacking it to the championship tour matt banting opened up with a 7.93 as that opening ride just a small throwaway backup score and reef hazelwood with a 3.5 to start out on and as we wait for that next set to roll through a big congratulations jacob wilcox you are into the finals yeah thank you uh that was pretty fun a bit of an unconventional way to get through a heat but uh i'll take it yeah it's good fun yeah well um yeah jacob there's some solid sets coming through you know that first wave a really critical turn you scored a higher six for that and that ended up being the difference yeah yeah that was um i kind of i thought that way i was going to maybe pull back a little bit down but they just had a lot more energy and yeah it was i always knew it was going to be tough without cars needing probably an eight he's been dropping eight fives the whole event so it was definitely game on still so yeah it was a fun hit and happy to be in for the final yeah it was exciting finish you know he locked in that 7.73 wasn't chasing a huge score now you made that decision to take that wave right at the end um what did that wave look like from your angle it showed a bit of potential yeah it looked actually pretty good i was i was just too deep so i probably in hindsight cars would have been way too deep as well so i could have just let him let him go up but it's always hard there wasn't many ways that came through with a good um kind of tp on it no one had a good shape i thought but yeah it's just a little bit too deep but yeah it's actually it's getting really fun and i think it'll be fun for the finals yeah well we'll uh go let your rest up because it is going to be a tough final in the uh solid set so congratulations on the surfing it's been outstanding throughout the entire event and we're looking forward to uh watch you against the winner of this heat beautiful thanks guys so jacob wilcox he is looking really solid out there he's just surfing so fast and powerfully and uh his timing has just been um amazing with uh taking on the lip consistently as it hits this uh shallow bank i've seen him just pull off some outstanding close-out maneuvers in the way of just shutting down but it doesn't seem to worry him too much yeah not at all i mean each one of these the three that are left in the draw matt banting and reef hazelwood currently have been so they've been on attack on these lefts reef hazelwood looking really informed on his forehand yesterday he was kind of that outstanding uh surfer that was going just that step ahead in that n-section commitment yeah so surprising that we didn't see him breaking boards yeah we thought he was going to in there i mean he was committing so much more than what we'd seen from everyone else that we thought was committing as we see that check off the top just yeah he's caught a rail down there and falling as he came out of that turn so matt banting of course at 7.93 huge score to start the heat with and we saw during that interview he had that shorter wave a couple of hits for a 4.5 and reese's first wave at 3.5 again matt banting now throws it up and over the lip good section ahead of him drives it around slicing turn into a third one just takes on that lip pretty casually and finishes off there in the white water so matt banting nice critical turn to start that wave and looking to improve on that 4.5 as we have another look at it so climbs up into the lip on that first turn big swooping and drives off the bottom like you said just so easily floats that finish down yep and he's looking really comfortable matt banting has made it into finals day here at avoca for the last three years consistently he's made it into the actual finals the last two years he came in second to conor o'leary in 2019 which wasn't so reminiscent of this heat because the point was firing yeah the women's final ran at the point and then conor and matt in the final drove themselves over to this left right and it was really similar to what we're seeing today like big heavy lefts connor came out on top with a 10 and a 9.5 to take the win but matt banting in that heat which would have won him any other final probably of the year yeah with an eight one seven and eight zero seven wow so that was like the battle of battles yeah and then last year matt banting came back to take the win in the 2020 avoca event the central coast pro so he's now the returning champion and he'll have that bit of fire behind him where from reef hazelwood we've just seen him make his first ever qs final and take out his first ever qs win at the great lakes pro this year yeah that's right so again so reef will be looking to go one better we'll go again with a 3 000 so a lot of points up for grabs here and um yeah it's interesting like reef just consistent and um you know already two good solid results you know a lot of the worst you can do here now is a third so finals day and matt well maddie banting of course that consistency has been a hallmark of his surfing for a number of years now and he is currently in the lead reef with priority be looking for something solid we saw in that last heat uh kyus king waited quite a while with priority because uh he knew what he needed to do ended up with a 7.73 and reef in a similar situation now his opponent with one really good high score and a mid-ranger uh still a decent two-way tunnel there for matt banting and reef in a position where he needs two waves uh he needs to lock in a high five or preferably a high seven or an eight to stay in touch with matt banning plenty of time of course these 30 minute heats giving our surface ample opportunity to choose the waves we've got 18 minutes remaining as the final day of the vissler central coast pro winds down the end of the vista surf series of course four events culminating here today at avoca beach in both the men's and women's as we see that little look at that one but no take off that banting staying active out the back nice to see him lock in that five six seven as a solid backup score seen that throughout the morning the surfer is able to kind of cherry pick out something in that seven point range but then really need to work hard to get a solid backup to put that pressure on the other competitor and matt banting doing a great job of it his dad lenny down here supporting him as always as always we've never seen matt at a contest without lenny present and uh it's great to see that team dynamic coming through reef often travels with his mom ruth um i haven't seen her around at this contest but that's kind of a cool thing seeing these two men growing up on tour traveling with those parents and that support system behind them and carrying themselves through into some great results matt banting remembering last year in 2020 was one of those surfers that had the most outstanding start to the year with a win a final finish and a quarter final finish out of the first out of three big events at the start of 2020. yep i believe had he had one more good result he would have solidified his qualification for the 2021 championship tour so with everything that happened with covid last year when it comes to surfers and qualification matt banting probably lost out the most yet compared to any other surfer in the world on a roll then without a doubt you know so yeah it was uh affected everyone differently you can see uh matt ban he's questioning the priority judge we saw ree hazelwood kind of make her i don't know well the priority judge didn't think it was committed paddle matt banning obviously does and uh but not much point once that decision is made he's not going to change it so reep hazel would with priority there's matt going he paddled for a wave but uh reef just sitting calmly out the back not worrying about that you can see matt still get quite agitated with this yeah he's really having a look back at the judging tower there giving a little wave obviously the beach announcer is communicating something to him there and there we go that priority has changed oh it has changed so well worth it for matt to raise his hand question the situation and for the judges to review that yeah well i saw the paddle and i kind of uh was surprised it didn't switch straight away but anyway matt banting now with priority so reeve hazelwood deemed to make a committed paddle for the wave that's a story with uh priority if you go for a wave and fail to catch it so you'll obviously surface make a subtle look at a wave with a couple of light paddles but when you put the pedal down so to speak the priority switches back so matt banting was getting quite theatrical about that claiming uh priority and uh he has now received it so we'll see a paddle now and there you go matt banting into this one shuts down so for all that that really hasn't amounted much at all priority now back with reef hazelwood i think reek did a good job selling matt into that wave yeah that was some good like competition tactics on both sides for matt to raise the question what's going on with that last pedal from reef where reef maybe thought he got away with it yeah but then for reef to play the same game back yeah to throw that pressure on matt and make him commit to a wave that's just gonna be a closeout yeah so uh the 14 minute mark the uh priority switches back to reap hazelwood he needs to get moving now you know he needs to lock in a decent score he had a currently he's comboed but with a 3.5 and a one he'd be looking to get rid of those regardless of matt's situation but matt banting with that 7.93 on his opening ride a big score as uh we didn't see the high score in the previous semi was a 7.73 so matt in a good position especially with that 567 backing him up if he can jump up turn that into a his next wave to a six five he will be in a really good spot now reef hazelwood out there trying to find that right wave you know we've seen him throughout this event usually with two good solid turns and laying down scores in the seven to eight range and at the moment though he's uh had limited opportunity just that 3.5 on a quick wave and then the one was a quick shutdown that repays the wood there's a yeah there's a lot on the line for reef this year so he's one of those surfers whose main goal was to qualify for the challenger series but then his second goal to that is to advance through that challenger series to qualify for the championship tour for 2022 where matt banting's already pre-qualified for the qua for the challenger series out of an excellent start to the season last year so for this for reef like there's a lot of points on the line now semifinals he's done really well to make it this far and to really solidify himself for the opportunity to then be in that qualification conversation come the end of the year yeah and yeah it's going to be an interesting year to see how it pans out you know there's still a lot of uncertainty of course we're all hopeful we'll see that challenger series get underway and the regional areas be able to run enough uh qs events for their surfers to qualify for that challenger series and of course the ct this stage was a lot more certainly uh around that than there was a couple of months ago we have four events here in australia i think the uh world surf league chartered jet is in the air on the way here to australia with uh international process men and women pro surfers and a number of wsl staff and they're going into two weeks quarantine and they'll just be hanging out playing tennis against the wall like diaper corle i mean that's one way to approach quarantine isn't it yeah so there you go eleven and a half minutes remaining matt banting still in the lead reef hazelwood patiently waiting for that decent scoring ride you can see a 3.5 and a one is what he's holding at the moment two throwaways and he's had priority for probably the last few minutes he had it that he lost it he got it back during that period has not been able to uh find anything decent meanwhile matt banting having a look at this one taking off deep a long wall ahead of him he sets it up big hook into the top this smaller inside one gives the opportunity for a second hit on the lip whether or not it's going to improve his 5.67 you'd be hoping it does turn the screws a little bit further on reep hazelwood and reef starting to get to the pressure zone 11 minutes remaining and he needs two waves yeah reef really needs to step up at this stage we've seen him drop in some excellent scores his semi-final yesterday afternoon sorry his quarterfinal yesterday afternoon was just fantastic as we see this replay for matt banting so it does really well to make it around that first section goes in for big floater and finishes on the end looking to put some more pressure on our surfer in black reef hazelwood up and riding drives up into the lip wow he hasn't put a foot wrong the whole event and he just fell that's the second fall uh so a couple of unforced errors there from reece reed hazelwood putting under more pressure see at the bottom there hits that lip and yeah just sort of lose his balance and falls and there was two more turns in that wave so the opportunity gone begging there for the surfer in black he'll be looking to get back out there and easy just get back out there he can grab priority maintain his composure but um yeah be pretty disappointed with that like you think god that was such a soft section compared to what he was smashing yesterday afternoon and uh that reef such a great serpent no reason why i can't get back out there and just uh yeah sit back relax and gain some composure and just lock in that next wave so pretty sure where maddie's in the lineup i'm pretty sure reef yeah so reef hazel with priority again so with nine and a half minutes remaining still needs two waves and uh just looking at this set as it's looks like it's going to stand up hard to tell this angle that may be backed off again yeah it backed right off yesterday's quarter final reef absolutely peaked he walked away with the highest heat total that we've seen in the event with a 17.5 he had an 8 and a 9.5 as his last two waves of the heat and was dropping a seven from his score line so he certainly knows how to work out this lineup but now the pressure's coming down to it he has not been in rhythm semi-finals a lot on the line points there's prize money on the line there's that challenger series qualification that he is so hungry for and he's sitting with just a 3.5 and a 1.2 he's in a combination situation to take an advancement into the final yeah he's fallen on two ways it hadn't been the scoring potential and now reef he's just looking at this one and i don't think it's going to offer any opportunity just a long and drawn out wave it's going to wobble it'll close out when it hits that bank so no interest there from either surfer you see matt just to uh the south of brief so just a few meters away reep hazelwood now with eight minutes remaining he's still needing two waves so realistically he's got to lock something in solid and he's got to do it in the next couple of minutes if he's going to have any chance of reeling matt banting in the final five minutes of his heat so eight minutes to go reef hazelwood with priority just searching for that wave and it's uh this stage we've got some sort of wobbly midsets coming through a bit of a lull in the action as far as the solid sets are concern that tide is dropping out for the next hour so it's currently 1003 here on the east coast of australia new south wales and low tide is at 11 15. so it's going to be interesting to see how this lineup continues to shift with a strong paddle from reef hazelwood uses priority frothy sandy section opening up in front of him he's just doing his best to stay with it and gain some speed he's going to look for a solid finish on the end can he ride out of it and there we go he may be right back in the game yeah well you saw reef just running down the line through that frothy section just smack that lip with a nice air reverse to finish and uh yeah good start to that way with uh smooth hack and then you had a lot of uh frothy white water to deal with you'll have a look at the replay here and look at this thing it's pretty ugly to start just gets a little turn there just a half turn now he builds down the speed it's racing down this section gets ready to throw it throws the air and rides out of that one and uh should get him out of combo it does 5.17 so now i'm needing an 8.43 so reef hazel with a 5.17 just really a one maneuver away that first turn was just a little check turn in the froth i really committed to catching that wave and the way before it left a lot of chop and white water in front of him and now we've got matt banting out the back with priority six minutes and 20 seconds remaining so reeve hayes would back in it we saw him yesterday throw 9-5 in his last wave in his quarter-final he's now being asked for an 8.43 if he's going to overtake matt on one wave big ass but the waves are there it's a big ask but we were waiting for him to go to the air we know that's really his strong suit he's had a couple of really good results in the red bull airborne specialty events he had a second place finish to italo ferreira back in 2019 on the gold coast and a third place finish in france to ian crane who ended up taking out the win so we know that reef has some really special stuff up his sleeve he's also been running some air camps reefs from the sunshine coast for grommets on the sunny coast so he's pouring back into that local community but imagine that to be able to keep that that talent and that creativity of knowing how to execute errors and now start teaching it he'd be thinking about it so much yeah he'd be thinking about how to attack that for someone that he's coaching in these kind of situations and now for him to be able to bring that to the table it'll be interesting to see five minutes on the clock will we see him go for something even bigger or just one of those really big front side hacks yeah well he's going to need two front side hacks just get the scoring knees like 8.43 is a big score although you know just a lit you know half a point more than the 7.93 you saw matt catch on or get rewarded on his first wave so similar he needs a similar wave to that one where matt had the opportunity for two big massive turns and matt banhing in a good position though reese chasing a solid solid score matt with priority only four and a half minutes remaining we saw in that last seat uh jacob wilcox saying you know wave sort of stepped up didn't had the sort of tp look about a bit of an a frame so he thought he'd go for it but it shut down on him which gave uh one last chance for christ king but for uh jacob's sake it didn't come through luckily now rip hazel with a similar situation chasing at 8.43 and with second priority so he's gonna have to wait and hope that uh either wide set comes through or a multi-wave set comes through where matt has to make the decision on which wave to take so it's going to be a tense end to the heat for people in both camps matt bounty just hanging on that lead reef obviously an exciting surf with the ability to knock off a 8.43 if he gets the opportunity so three and a half minutes seeing some solid sets and three minutes plenty of time for a multi-wave set to come through looks like a bit of paddling going on no i thought that wave looked like i was going to stand up matt banning had no interest in it and obviously reef knew it wasn't worth the effort a bit of wobble courtesy of this uh subtly swell light wind at the moment seems to have backed off from what we saw this morning still a bit of uh mainly across shore with a southerly forecast to pick up out of the east northeast in the afternoon probably around about midday well matt banting is just tailing reef hazelwood right now he is not going to let him go on anything that has scoring potential three minutes on the clock reef can definitely drop that excellent score we saw him drop two in his quarterfinal yesterday and matt banting could be looking to improve a score but more than likely he's in defense mode now yep two and a half minutes remaining as you said he knows what reef is capable of so he's just going to limit those opportunities for his opponent and here we go this wave is going to stand up and looks like reef hazelwood having a shot of the title he takes off deep streaking down the line needs the speed he's got to get up and throws a huge air a bit of a harm area that one his foot left the board if he just had more of a rotation that could have been something special but unfortunately but he threw the dice he had to go for it and um that's reminded of matt well you know an 8.43 can be achieved with one maneuver if it's spectacular enough let's have a look at this as he builds his speed up he's eyeing down the line did really well hits that section but yeah just sort of fell from his board halfway through that rotation it didn't look like it was ever going to be completed just under two minutes remaining matt banting still holding that lead looking to uh qualify for the final where jacob wilcox is already has already qualified so reef chasing down a big score i hope he gets another wave wow so do i i mean that was really exciting we know that that's what he's going to pull out like he needs a huge maneuver to get a huge score and there hasn't been many open faced waves that are allowing those two turn combinations so for him his best bet is to take to the air that was a throaty wave too and to be able to actually time it and hit that in section to ramp yeah i'm pretty sure matt would have been watching that so if you're going yeah he would have seen him come out of the lip guy oh so matt will be thinking okay i don't want him to even catch a wave and it's just too risky for matt at this stage to allow a surfer-like reef you know it would be the same if jacob wilcox was in this heat be the same with any of these you know our last eight men in the draw to just allow them to take off on something could result in you losing that heat yeah exactly yeah eight point four and eight five or nine off one maneuver we see that where they are spectacular enough and 40 seconds remaining so you can see reef just moving up and down trying to find any opportunity now here we go what is going to happen nothing there 35 seconds that way was a bit of a non-event the 30 seconds remaining reap hazelwood looking for that one last opportunity he's made a bit of a break and well what's going to happen oh he's going he's driving down the line check off the top and we're now looking for that same ramp to open up the wave is a double up there's not gonna be anything too good little redirection there hits the finish wow matt looked at that he was tempted then he thought you know what he's not going to get it i don't know he goes maddie banting now just slicing off the top and whacks the lip for that's a good finish so he may i didn't see the start of that wave so whether or not he caught it in time but either way that last wave of wreaths was not the score he needed so uh maddie banting moving through to the final up against jacob wilcox and will be back with the women's final the sister revolution awesome heat coming up between molly piccolum and mason callahan we're going to bring the big guns into the booth jess grimwood taking over soon [Music] so [Music] [Music] man [Music] hey [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] and welcome back to the finals the sister revolution central coast pro macy callahan up against molly pickle molly pickle them in red macy in black it is going to be a battle to the finish 35 minutes on the clock and these women so deserving of a chance to win those 3 000 points at 8 grand to walk away with the prize money my name is shannon hughes joined in the booth by jess grimwigh jess it's great to have you back in and to call heat on a couple of women that you know well yeah this is a massive final i mean for the event shannon and for the community here particularly these two women really big names great role models for the up and coming surfers and the juniors and even the old crew around the central coast so i'm so excited it's the final event it's the finals now for the women and this is going to be a really really good contest oh it's going to be so exciting like you said just both of them would know this wave so well and they would have such a great support crew so many of our crew this week that have been traveling from around the coastline of australia have a coach have a few friends traveling with them maybe a parent for these two women now they've got home behind them and it's going to be such an exciting battle it's giving me like i'm getting chills just thinking about it the two locals battling it out at their home break yeah so macy originally represented the vocal beach board riders uh here right on the shores she would have grown up competing in monthly contests on this particular bank at the pines it's generally the running spot for that club and um on the other end of the drawer molly picclum is from north shelley of course and macy actually changed board writer's club um a fair few years ago and now represents north shelly as well so both of these women often get the chance to match up in practice heats and in a lot of training conditions molly spends a lot of time down here also with a coach training so this is going to be so well matched and they know this bank so so well inside out i mean this is the pines this is kind of what it looks like every time we have a big south swell here shannon it's so reminiscent of the finals day that we had here jess back in 2019 we saw these big lefts reeling off at the pines the point was kind of working we saw the men's final surf right out here on the left so it's great to see those similar conditions coming back together for us hello to you walking back home shannon hughes jess grimwood in the booth and an amazing women's final for the biggest event of competition here at the vista new south wales pro serve series yeah i mean this is the qs 3000 so there's 3 000 points on the line for both of these ladies i know particularly for macy going into that challenger series conversation for the world surfly this is going to be really important for her molly's already looking good for that challenger series so this is maybe a little bit of a notch in the confidence spell going into that championship tour qualification that she's been chasing and macy's already in that championship tour space so she's you know competed in maui competed at the maui pro already started off a great return to competition after a funny 12 months off and so for macy there's not so much pressure it would be great for her to get into that challenger series conversation but she's got so much focus already ahead on the ct coming back to australia but then for molly to start working towards getting in that qualification conversation she's had a couple of years in the qs now really started to blow up at the end of 2019 port stevens she was an absolutely outstanding surfer at that qs6000 that used to run at the finish of the year and it's great to see these two with a strong matchup now in the finals but it's been quiet five minutes down 35 minute finals and no waves caught yet yeah in the opening semi-final of the day for molly uh we actually had a restart as well so in her semi-final versing sally fitzgibbons they didn't get a wave in the first 10 minutes and there was an official restart so an extra uh another 30 minutes put on the clock and a fresh start for the first semi so she's dealt with these challenging conditions i mean it's very solid very chunky looking south to southeast swell rolling around here so it's probably only one in every three sets that comes through the contest bank that really lines up properly and that extra 35 minutes for the final is going to be really nice having a look at this beautiful one coming through and first wave up and riding on her backhand driving into that first turn a little check for macy callahan and decides to kick out yeah so maybe just getting the toe stuck into the wax nice and early she did a similar thing in her semi-final coming into this final just getting the ball rolling here goes molly having a look i mean i've seen so many tactical and technical calls being thrown down already on finals day this morning we've seen blocks before priority is established we've seen the restarts we've seen suspended priority with the washrooms for the other women here's the wave replay of the first of macy you just wait until she lines up one of these sections i mean that wasn't the section for her she decided to opt out regain a position in the lineup but wait until she's able to connect with that backhand right in the pocket i mean you can see the work she's been putting in in the offseason and she has just been looking so sharp coming into this shannon yeah she's really put in so much work of course originally from this area local break here at avoca but residing on the tweed coast as we see a tough takeoff for molly picklem uses party on that one though little tactics there jess yeah i mean she'd already committed halfway riding down that phase so she had to go i don't think she's going to take that too heavily into her finals i'm playing she's really really good at brushing off things and she really rises to the challenge um she's she's always the first to have a laugh at her own expense so i think she'll probably just laugh that one off get back out the back and look for the wave i mean don't get me wrong she is a very tenacious competitor she's well known for that really aggressive competition attitude and i think that that comes mostly from i mean her work with a coach and her sparring partner i mean it's none other than tyler right shannon i mean what a setup you know there's no no surprise that molly picklem has risen to the occasion in this event being that she's got that kind of team behind her between tyler wright and glenn micro hall yeah and micros are local here too so i think that a lot of their training throughout the week when competition isn't on and molly's not on the road it's done right here at the pines or up and down this stretch and a strong paddle for molly picklem finding connection on her backhand great opening turn that wave shuts down but she's got a score to come through on the board yeah i think that's going to be the best wave of the heat so far it was a full maneuver nice bottom turn connects with the top let's have a look at the wave replay here sets up right here doesn't drop all the way to the bottom because you can see that section running off a little too quick so she doesn't want to be late and she wants to capitalize on the single maneuver so that school will come through and let's see what it locks into the system at all right priority sitting with macy callahan at the back 26 minutes on the clock and a score to come through for molly picklem it is such a tough battle between these two like you mentioned molly picclum has tyler wright in her campaign tyler took out the win for the women's maui pro which was finished up at pipeline and i think for someone like molly coming through for macy to have seen that as we've got a score now a 3.67 on the board for molly picclum for that last wave so drops in as the highest one to think of where women surfing is heading for where macy with years to go on the championship tour for where molly could be with her career and opportunities to surf waves like pipeline on the line it's really exciting to see yeah it's really cool to see this i guess it's the revolution and the evolution has aptly named that sister revolution but it is this work in progress that's been for women coming in and reblazing these paths and surfing i mean to have somebody like tyler wright leading the way for someone as young as molly i mean they match up surfing wise almost you know powerful power at the moment so it's just tyler is such an authentic human and an authentic athlete and the best role model for these young women as we have macy driving in on her backhand nice swooping arc to start off with eyeing up this second section nice and patient will she be able to foot on a third turn she doesn't but what a dynamic couple of turns to start with oh yeah and macy's backhand is i'm probably going to say it's her strongest asset in her surfing have a look at the wave replay drops right to the bottom manages the bump too because this is big challenging conditions and there that rotation that upper body movement the way she puts the power behind the rail when she does it it's beautiful backhand surfing it's so good to watch from the shores and yeah she's looking really really finely tuned for this upcoming ct season well those were the waves that we've been seeing throughout the morning that left that offers that moment extra for a second turn for that connection as we have a look at some of that spectator crew down here to support the local women oh there's such a crew of locals there's i mean the whole of the north shelley board riders are down there i know they've got the flag bearers and i mean it's a double board riders final for them so for these young athletes there's all the young men and all the young women plus all the parents for them to be watching this unfold for the world surf league it gives that benchmark for everybody coming through this community um you know originally it was the evoca beach boardwriters that set the mark with people like wilco and ace bucking and um even ace's sister jesse buckham was a top level surfer back 10 or 15 years ago so to reset and just remind the whole community this is the type of surfing we can produce here on the coast it's pretty incredible and there's a 7.67 we saw it coming for last of macy callahan just matching up with those top waves of the day those left-handers with those two turn combinations she knew exactly what she was looking for on that one yeah if you compare it to molly's 367 as well i mean 367 one turn top to bottom hit the lip and it was nicely timed to have a look at the wave replay here for macy's 767 there's the first turn really deep bottom turn kind of flattens out the arc and sets up the second so that's where you get that extra three or four points from if she was able to even put in a third really critical maneuver you could see where it could go up into the excellent score so there's that comparison if you're tuning on in from home across the airwaves you can start to do your own you know at-home judging and break down what they're looking for and they're looking for the commitment in the critical sections and they're looking for that power as well and i mean macy brings it all the time and those sharp eyes just look so finely tuned under her feet yeah the boards are looking really really good for macy callahan and a great comparison there to see molly's 3.67 up against macy's 7.67 so 21 minutes on the clock and macy callahan spending a lot of time on the gold coast over the last couple of years training with some of the world's best between steph gilmore you've got the dimity stoils up there there's such a cool pack of women that are pushing themselves and pouring into each other in a really fun and encouraging environment yeah if you spending your weeks monday to friday with those type aspiring partners it's not uh a surprise to see both of these women here in the final i mean they've got it's an advantage and it's a something that they've um sort out throughout their careers and establishing themselves as professional athletes when you surround yourself with people that are better than you you rise to the challenge and both of these women i mean macy's already a championship to a competitor like you said but molly she's knocking on the door and she's been knocking on the door since the first year she's jumped across from the junior so it's going to be a really really nice 21 minutes unfolding that's such a good hint to molly knocking on the door from the start her first qs that she ever entered into she took the she made it into the finals which is huge so to have come out swinging from the juniors at that level and then now to be building in to get a little bit more experience is going to be really exciting to see her again in the biggest final that she's had ah it's a beautiful sunday morning i'm so excited shannon i mean i'm so glad that the finals are 35 minutes and there's just so many good vibes going on around the contest pumping big challenging conditions i mean it was massive when we first rocked off at dark this morning it was literally just washed through after wash through i saw some of the earlier competitors doing their warm-ups getting washed to the beach without a single wave multiple times so this is the epitome of surfing at the moment women's world-class in the water and they've been rising to the occasion over and over again in these challenging conditions it's been so exciting to see even over the whole series as we see macy callahan taking a committed paddle to put herself in position she's sitting under priority from molly pickling but she has all the opportunity for this wave a smaller inside wave nice section for that opening hit throws heaps of spray and connects in for two turns and she's looking to drop that 2.0 on the scoreboard i love how she draws the lines with her back arm you can see it a lot it's very um particular for her style it's quite unique have a look at the wave replay see that back arm draws the line early before she's able to unleash on the rails and i mean oh it's just really finesse surfing i can't say anything else about it i love watching macy's backhand so i think it's just so smooth and so graceful it's so important to have that backhand open up as well if you know as we see so much of that coming from caroline marks when she's surfing goofy foot it's that backhand that leads that full extension yeah that is quite that's a really good um match up thinking about caroline starr and macy's they have got very similar backhand use and i've never actually placed them together in my mind because i mean caroline the goofy footer and may see the natural footer so i tend to not compare them it's too hard to use the flip mirror with the replays but that's a good comparison for them yeah well it's it's been great to see macy's backhand really like snap through she's always had it there i think it's what's qualified her for the championship tour especially in a lot of those big heavy beach breaks and we've seen her with some like really great results through she made it into the finals uh back in 2017 2018 in france and some big beach break stuff but to see macy's backhand coming alive and caroline marks gets the nod for it so often but i think that we need to pay attention to more women to really see how that backhand attack is such an important part of their style and the power that they're bringing yeah i think also with when i look at macy's when i think about caroline's i think macy is a smoother more flow more graceful approach whereas when i think of caroline straightaway i mean similar background placement but i just think of like aggressive no bars like straight off the bottom attack at the top and then readjust in the middle and then set up and i know that that's something that she's probably working on in developing her maturity in her championship tour surfing 17 minutes on the clock macy callahan leading the charge she drops in a seven sorry she's got that 7.67 she drops in a 4.83 for the last wave so that increases her heat total it's that 12 point plus range molly picklem is having such a slow heat jess she's just got that 3.67 on the scoreboard for the one turn a throw away of a 0.13 and she's chasing an excellent score now to take the lead away from macy callahan i don't think that's going to rattle her too much i think that is something that she's been training for a lot i saw her with that heat against sarah boom yesterday she had a pretty scrappy heat there wasn't a lot of contestable waves coming through that were able to open up for both the women in the water and she just had to go back to that grind that we always speak about with the qs getting back on the board regardless i mean generally at this level of competition you're not making it through without that 14 points but sometimes when the conditions change you have to adjust your performance and you're looking for the progression you're not necessarily focusing on the eights and nines anymore so molly's really good at switching back into that grind mode and she'll put score on the board if she needs it i mean at the moment she's got plenty of time normal heats run for 20 minutes i guess generally for her training so with 16 minutes and just over an 8.83 might be in her sights and have a look at all those photographs there they've been down here from dark as well shannon i mean the community is so invested in this professional surfing display and also the characters i think that's the best thing about watching these women the kids get to link in and get emotionally invested in their personalities on tour oh it's just been one of the funnest things to witness again this week is to see so many of the local groms here getting to witness great surfing and getting to be at the water's edge when those surfers come out to stop the likes of the really well-known surfers like a sally fitzgibbons or an ace bucket or julian wilson to get those autographs and just to get a photo taken with him but then to also get that moment with some of our up and coming our rising stars on the qualifying series who are just starting to make it through a few heats in and not considering qualification yet but they're just starting out and to see them getting to sign their first autographs has been a really cool thing too oh yeah that is a really cool point to bring up and i think like i was saying when we're talking about like well-known servers like caroline or macy or molly in the water i love that split in fans where people go i love caroline's style no i love mexi style and that brings that investment into your characters that you're pushing onto her and you get the jerseys or the names on the back and you're chasing down for autographs all the time i think that's just such a good part about professional sports and it's something that we've seen for women surfing really really um come to fruit in the last few years and it's just even for so many of us young women that grew up as surfers that had posters on our walls to now see these women starting to drop that stuff gilmore just put out like a really cool uh super stylish poster run that i'm sure young girls across the world have put in orders for because they want to have that up on their wall at home to be able to channel that when they start surfing and charging decent waves yeah and it's like the old blue crash scene i went 100 marie writes the scores or what how many days until pipe on the mirror you know you know there's so many young women around the world like you said with the posters of tyler or maybe a poster macy and molly and and they're uh they're just literally focusing on that every morning with you know the teeth brush routine and getting ready for their careers they're coming up in the next five 10 15 years so it's an incredible part of women surfing and it's been amazing to see of course uh you're talking about the board riders set up that both macy and molly have had as we see another huge set just roll through the lineup i feel like these two women would have taken a couple of waves on the head with that one but see those board riders match-ups for them both surfing for north shelly board writers and it actually has pushed macy and molly molly to a position where they have the most wins ever on the junior series tour like globally the two of them together with five out of six wins in the years which is really incredible that those two have pushed each other to that those kind of um record holding positions but then also to see a series like the vistlin new south wales pro surf series that we've just seen come together to allow our surfers those moments to rise from just being board riders competitions to now nine years into the new south wales pro surf series getting in to the contest jersey and surfing against the best yeah and when you look at the amount of hate times that these two women through the series have put in plus adding the board riders you can see why they're at that top level and i think that's going to create this whole bit of fresh blood coming through that championship to it season maybe 2022 and 2023 24 i think we'll really start to see all these young women like for board riders for these two women i mean i'm a part of that club as well and i know that when those two are in town in line with our monthly contest every single person comes down because they want to see hang on what level do i have to surf at to beat these women and there's these young women coming up like nearly all port i know she matches up against macy and molly like repetitively through the year so it's pushing her and it's pushing all the young women in the club to keep practicing and keep performing and keep putting in the work because these two are leading the way and they're made a career out of surfing and they're just full-rounded professional athletes and it's so good to hear that even at this level and i think it's just part of australian culture within board writers is that they're showing back up to their home board writers comps they haven't forgotten that and moved on to just competing on the championship tour or looking for those qualification spaces they're showing up and they're supporting their local community and they're giving those other surfers the opportunity to push themselves as we have a strong paddle here from macy callahan beautiful open face in front of her snaps up into the lip on that first turn comes in for a second and will she connect for the third two giant turns connected together jess grimwood clapping in the booth silent clap there for macy i love seeing these women go hit for hit i want to see the answer back from molly because that's going to be a good score from macy let's have a look at the wave replay this first turn straight up into the pocket so well time looks really light as well and then pushes through the rail almost a little bit of a dab and a claim on the shoulder there at the end so i think she's feeling it and she's looking in flow and she knows she has to step it up a notch and the answer back from molly picclum straight into the lip drives around into that second section and she's gonna ride out of it stays nice and low and we've got a battle on our hands scores to come through for both macy and molly jess your thoughts on that exchange let's have a look at the wave replay sets up this first turn really nice carves down the face with the rail a bit to negotiate the wash has to place it up there and flatten it out earlier than i think what she was expecting or focusing on so she has to ride out and then look at the intensity going into the paddle battle now these two women are going to be re-fighting for that domination in the end of this heat so 10 minutes mace is in priority there are two big numbers to score to drop and i'm sure that that wsl panel having a very good look in comparison similar approaches to the first term but different maneuvers macy was really high and tight and molly's was more of a rail work carved down the face to set up for that second section here goes macy macy on her backhand nice check turn to start off with and just patiently eyes up that finishing section and goes over the falls oh my gosh she's literally just putting it all on the line at the moment i think she knows molly's answered back to the score i do still expect macy to get the jump let's have a look at the wave replay here from visit new south wales puts in a bit of setup rail work drops down to the bottom tries to rotate through that final maneuver but that's crunch time in there on that little anchor breaker bank and we've seen pretty much all the competitors become victim to it nine minutes on the clock scores to come through from those last few waves for both of our competitors and we're expecting something huge eight minutes 50 seconds on the clock of course we saw molly pickling get her first qs win at the great lakes pro in in boomerang just a few days ago as we take another look at this one look at the setup turn there she drives so hard through the rail to negotiate through the backwash but has to go a little flat in that second turn i think that's what's gonna crucify her on the score and with live action connects another couple of turns together and jumps out in the backwash yeah i mean the judges have so many scores to lock in now it's just been a flurry of action and the women are doing exactly what we expected have a look at the wave replay visit new south wales aggressive approach up over the phone for that first turn sets her up well for this second section and the two-turn combo there for molly so a similar wave again probably better timing on that last wave for her have a look at those scores dropping in we've got a 7.07 drops in for macy callahan to improve on that 7.67 and a 7-4-3 on the scoreboard for molly piccolum so molly now chasing another seven a 7.37 to take the lead away from macy callahan so the judge is giving the nod to that critical approach for molly picklin on that last exchange for them the 743 she put it all on the line on that end section we've seen so like we said so many competitors fall victim to it but that's a good looking heat total for macy callahan i mean she's gonna have to probably have another shot at replacing that second wave score because i would count on molly backing up that 743 with something in excellent range i mean she's been rewarded for the two turn combos on the backhand and i feel like she has probably well there you go there we go a 753 on the scoreboard for molly pickling takes her into the lead with a 7.43 as her backup score macy callahan now down into second chasing another a 7.29 to take the lead jess grimwood this heat has just flipped on its head seven minutes to go molly in the lead by such a narrow margin have a look at the visit new south wales replay this is the last mid seven she's dropped in railwork in the pocket oh that was the first one of the two seven so puts it up flattens it out a bit on the end here's the last one up and over the foam sets her up well for this inside turn drives so hard off the bottom turns you can see the fins flaring to the beach so you can tell how much speed's going into their turns and exactly what we expected from the finals and this level of surfing from the women sevens galore at the moment and uh there's maddie bensing maddie banting getting ready to paddle out against jacob wilcox in the men's final this is matt's third final here at avoca over the last three years came in second to conor o'leary in 2019 and then won last year and now he's in the finals once again and what an exciting one it will be but wow i am just so impressed with the standard of surfing that we are seeing now from the women let me tell you about these women at board riders so every heat that the molly gets to have against the groms she's always scratching around the lineup trying to snake them telling them to come on bring it take a wave off me so she's in a good position now and watched the tactics unfold in the last five minutes of this shannon she's going to put the pressure on macy so hard it's what she brings it's her tenacity in the water in the jersey and she's going to be putting macy under the pump but can she answer back macy under the pump uses priority into the foam for that first turn and now eyeing up the finishing section goes in super hard puts the power on that back foot and she'll ride out of it feeling relieved chasing a seven two nine jess what are your thoughts given the other scores and waves we've seen coming through i mean look at the look at the difference in the totals macy's feeling the flow as well let's have a look at the visit new south wales replay soften up and over the phone for that setup turn but still nicely set up for such an aggressive attack disappears almost completely i love the body language there it's the double arm claim over the backwash to finish so she's feeling it i mean let's see what it locks in as molly's got her ears ready to hear the beach announcer shannon wow i mean it is all going down four minutes 30 seconds and there's so much on the line here mate molly picclum we know has just walked away with her first ever qs win at the start of the series as we see jacob wilcox running down to the water macy callahan her biggest win to date is a world junior championship which is amazing but she has never clinched the win in the qualifying series event she's had multiple runner-up positions especially at that qs 3000 level port stevens a couple of years in a row but for for macy callahan it's gonna be clutch for her to see if she can actually get the win away in a big qs event yeah she's misconsistent if you look at her results she just always seems to make her way into the final conversations of the qs and of the some of the ct events and she just seems to deliver in a lot of hates but to get that result and to get the win i think we're going to see probably that coming into the 2021 season because her body language and her flow just looks so on point at the moment oh she looks so dialed in in just that extra level of she's been here she's been knocking out the door for a while and she's now ready to rise to the occasion three minutes 23 seconds on the board molly picclum still sitting in the lead with that 7.53 that she just dropped in to back up or improve on her 7.43 macy callahan had that 767 sitting on the scoreboard for a long time she's finally backed it up with a 707 is still chasing a high seven to take the lead away from molly picclum macy's last wave dropped in at just a 5.83 so it's under the mark on what we've seen across the field and i cannot believe how we knew it was going to be an evenly matched heat but this is about as even as we could have ever expected yeah i mean either one of these women taking it out is going to be a win for us to look at the flex there molly piccolo uses priority over macy callahan huge first hit matt is well overhead oh that's like a double overhead face there for the pickle but um let's see i mean only one big critical maneuver let's see what it locks in so priority goes to macy here's the wave replay huge chunky section look how shallow it is when she comes down and that second bit just rolls off to the right hand side of the screen it's a big chunky inside section so much sand is starting to suck up in that tube low tide is dropping out in the next 30 minutes so men's heat will run straight through that low tide and it is getting so solid coming through that finishing section so much commitment on the line as we take another look at this one she sets it up only one turn pretty big under the lip and stands up tall you can see it imploding there on that sand like you said but let's see if macy can find another good looking wave i'd love to see a last exchange between the women i mean here we go macy callahan great snap to start off with patiently eyeing up the finishing section comes in under the lip solid finish and will the judges deem that complete wow one minute 30 seconds on the clock i'm unsure about the completion on that last maneuver i mean she was out of the turn going straight let's have a look at the wave replay drawers off the bottom you can see those fins as well set up kind of top car for this and she's just been attacking it see she's already ridden out of that turn and she kind of disappears after the fact so let's see what it locks in i'm not sure if it's going to change the situation because she's chasing a 7.29 but i mean it was a big critical section well scores in for last of molly picklem was a 6.40 so that does not increase her requirement 45 seconds on the clock molly sitting out the back with priority and macy stuck on the inside she won't have the time to make it to backline again you can see that in her body language now you can see her coming in and waiting for that last score to drop in will it be enough to take her first qs win or will we see molly picclum with a second win in the series and her biggest win to date on the qualifying series 20 seconds on the clock as we wait for that score to come through jess grimwood oh what a beautiful display of surfing those women hit for hit huge contest for them and it's a win all around for nsb so congratulations i mean huge final a huge final just a 3-3-7 for last of macy callahan which means we're seeing molly piclum with the win her second win in the vissla new south wales pro surf series and she is the champion of the sister evolution central coast pro her second qs win to date and she's looking so sharp moving into the challenger series ah there she is she's going to have a little victory lap shannon congratulations the pickle molly pickles well deserved win there and we'll be right back with more action the men's final jacob wilcox matt banting coming back right after this uh [Music] [Music] some like blue some like gold some of mello did solid bowl some are aggro yet some are stuck this last tops for all different folks is welcome back to avoca beach we're into the final of the this central coast pro coming up right now it's going to be an outstanding heat of course matt banting looking pretty good in his semi-final as was jacob wilcox so get ready for what will be a killer 35 minutes of surfing we just saw the women's final really close two girls from the two women from north shelby board riders macy callanhan and molly picklin molly winning that one joining me in the booth is chris enova chris this is going to be a outstanding final both these guys have been surfing so well throughout the entire event and you definitely deserve to be here at the pointy end of the event haven't they just reggae stoked to be in the booth calling the final what uh you know a series that's been the visceral surf series you know we started even the last event this is stop number four the uh central coast pro started with 120 competitors down to two and a lot more deserving surfers than these two i mean jacob wilcox the powerhouse goofy footer from western australia and matt banting the port macquarie man who has been former ct surfer now right back at the top of his game and very deserving to be in the final here again yeah again third final in a row i think third time and wow doesn't he love this spot he's got a special relationship with the voker and it just keeps on growing yeah he's uh been surfing so well and he's going to have his work cut out for him of course jacob wilcox was uh on fire throughout every round so uh sit back and relax and watch what will be a uh awesome uh well i was gonna say 35 minutes we're down to 32 just under 32 minutes but these finals that we just saw uh that uh in the sister revolution final just such a close one between macy and molly molly getting the the knot at the end courtesy of back to back seven plus waves and uh just waiting to see who will be the first person to take off here of course a qs 3000 carrying a 3 000 vital points 30 000 prize money across men's and women's divisions here and the winners taking home eight thousand dollars second place four thousand dollars so not a bad day's uh work well it's been a long haul to get here though all these surfers uh probably surf what five times five rounds to get to where we are now and uh yeah and it's been uh pretty torrid out there today we've seen some solid sets uh hasn't it just yeah wearing a lot of waves on the head but um fitness is such a big part of surfing like all professional sport and today is proof why you need to be able to handle good hold downs washing machine action caught inside and then of course uh ride ways with uh cons right right away as a consequence with uh a lot of power so what are your thoughts who if you're going to pick someone i know you're not going to but it's it's so difficult i mean these two have been hands down the standouts obvious of the whole draw um great to see jacob back in you know top form again he had a few unlucky results leading to this so he was super fired up coming to this event i've always said that he's been a standout in the water whether it's free surfing even in his heat but just as hasn't been able to find the right waves yeah now you can see he's really adjusted his mindset and you know credit to him to you know have three bad results to kick off the vista surf series three events in a row and to bounce back and go you know what i need to really adjust my mindset and be on the best waves every heat and he's doing that and every heat he's getting off to a quick start and then he's got good heat management he's finding the best waves and he is surfing so electric and so fast and the commitment of the end sections are unbelievable and same with matt banting and i mean the only other person i could you know compare to these two would be reef hazelwood who has been so solid throughout the event and obviously you know reef and maddie matching up in the semi which was a cracker of a heat unfortunately reef you know unable to find a good wave here's maddie banting kicking off what he's done all event first wave of the heat looking like a good left getting around this one and it ran off showing signs of almost like hawaii out there it's so like so much water moving and it's nice and blue with the sun on it yeah it looks uh it looks pretty out there um when you're down on the beach looks a little bit more ugly but um yeah we just saw that matt bandhan getting caught behind there just a .83 uh priority now with jacob wilcox that wave just stretched out it looked like it was going to offer something at the start obviously matt thought the same thing but he just hit that inside bank and shut down we're pretty close to dead low tide i think um but there's so many so much water moving around courtesy of this strong south swell wind swung a little bit further around to the east southeast only light uh he's going to pick up this afternoon uh hopefully not until after our finalists are back on the beach in 28 minutes anticipating north east north easterly at 15 or 20 knots so quite strong yeah not good for a southerly corner no but at the moment we've got uh pretty decent conditions out there yeah i just saw in the uh semis and the women's finals still plenty of opportunities some good open face waves and that's what the boys are looking for now yeah i had a surf out there yesterday raced out after the comp was finished and uh little commentators cut with crispy and i tell you what it was so tricky out there it looks so fun from the beach and you see these big lefts rolling through and when you're out there it's a different story there's a lot of water moving it's hard to find a wave that even you know holds up to start with and then you've got to deal with the bomb sets that break on your head here's jacob wilcox on a nice looking left to kick things off the west australian local bangs that one through the lip loves a solid wave wraps up that carving turn through the lip and another one out of the top there so three good turns to kick off his account in the final yeah three good solid turns there he'll be happy with that uh it's going to give him a distinct advantage over matt banting's first wave he caught that at the 27.5 minute mark so jacob wilcox getting his account open you'll see this on the replay just strokes in nice section ahead of him just smashes it up into the lip again off the bottom big carving turn just that tight arc hook and just finish it nicely with a clean close-out reentry so three good solid turns there rode out of that wave nicely and jacob wilcox getting on the board with the first decent wave of the set and of the heat i should say and matt banting out there with priority now so yeah jake would be pretty happy with that just uh continuing where he finished off in his semi-finals with uh good wave selection and great surfing yeah i mean it was a great wave to kick off the final deep deeper left up on the bank you know had a nice run to it it allowed some really crisp turns and you know a bit of contrast because we've seen those heavy end sections down the end that one didn't offer that heavy end section so might hold the score back a bit but three good turns and the judges will have a good look at that maddie banting carving through the lip and a second one too searing top turn and banks that one with a heavy end section so both surfers three-turn combination yep wow that's a great fight back wave there for maddie banting yeah it came uh straight back at jacob wilcox with that wave you can see uh what the difference is as far as the judges interpretation goes but again the replay straight up nice carving turn out of the top this wave stands up a little bit more vertically nice hook there and then again the big whack to finish so tags that one nicely and so two very similar waves and as we see matt just make his way out so through the uh the washing machine and just looking to get back out you can see the crew over there on the point yeah that was such a great way for maddie to kick off i love the second turn here watch how he comes out with so much speed first nice turn second one comes out with so much speed to set up the end turn that was what set up that whole finish there and that explosive finish that gave him that bit of point of difference i feel like maybe over jacob just slightly we'll wait and see jacob was probably first two turns better but maddie with a better finishing turn so contrast there what are your thoughts reggae yeah well the judges seem to be taking their their time with this and having a good good look at this and as you said they've got the contrast of the forehand of the backhand as well and just yeah as you said that last one probably a little bit more critical to finish and so jacob locks in well there you go a 7.33 versus the seven so the judges uh well hang on he already had that score so the judge is sort of deeming those very similar 24 and a half minutes remaining so yeah we're just uh yeah so matt banting 6.17 he's got the .083 jacob with a 7.33 so uh yeah we saw that quickening out from matt earlier on so jacob wilcox getting a point advantage over over that one you can see him on well that's actually the club you can see him now here we go jacob wilcox big carving turn out of the top high speed coming off the bottom setting up a big move here and just rides out of that so that one not as critical as the end of his previous wave with that first turn just that uh copy book stuff from jacob wilcox just the speed he carves those tight arcs out of the top and looking pretty pretty comfortable and loose out there doesn't he look so energized i mean he's got this energy about him that just look how much he's pumping down the lines i mean these bigger waves offer speed but he's trying to get as much speed as he can to get that critical turn as you know big as it possibly can be and it's been what he's doing all event i mean i feel like he's been racing towards n sections that are so deadly and hitting him as hard as he can i mean the strength this man has is he's unbelievable i know he does a lot of work in the gym a lot of training behind the scenes and it's what's kind of landed him as being one of the you know the best emerging talents out of australia and would fit right in on the championship tour yeah he's it's been interesting to watch because when he first came out of the wa he's just a grommet you know a lot of speed but he's a classic grommet and then he's sort of strength he's showing now and i was talking to him yesterday and it's kind of like i haven't seen him for about a year and i thought wow yeah like all of a sudden he's uh got a lot of power which hasn't been all of a sudden but he's just really got that speed and the ability to take on anything the wave throws at him yesterday i remember seeing one wave in the heat early and it was a close out but it was a whack whack three of the fastest turns and the last one just to sort of take gliding down with the lip as it shut down and i thought man he's just looking so sharp out there as is matt banting of course matt has been uh on fire all the way through it's uh he's looking for a score there from the judges by the sounds of it from the beach commentary but 22 minutes remaining and matt banting with priority waiting for that next wave these are only a 5.64 67 to move into first just a four five for jacob on that last wave that last turn was smaller offset wasn't as critical as the previous wave and of course matt banting defending champ here the whistler central coast pro and his third final in a row was second to con o'leary two years ago 2019 yeah he did and uh we'll see we're getting a replay of this last of red here's that first turn nice hook out of the lip looks showing shades of wa this wave here and bangs it through the lips so like you said a not very critical end section but the intent was there just the wave let him down on that instance yeah so 4.5 for him backs up the 7-3-3 and yeah advantage to the man in red but he can never count out matt banting because well he's been just so solid and obviously already qualified for the challenger series event on the back of his results last year got the second to leo in the prime at narrabeen and those results have carried on through to this year and that lands him a spot in the challenger series already and i know jacob wilcox would be fired up to take out this final and really cement himself in the challenger series two and what two talents we would have you know i think reef hazelwood will be right up there too and his name in the mix and exactly what you talking about before about you know jacob not having good results in the previous 1000s but you know if he wins this that's uh it's like winning the other three yeah a thousand three thousand points going going on so making the you know once you got to the quarters in this event it was a real keeper as we see looking at this one jacob wilcox paddling into it looking down the line he takes off angles into this one throws it up nice turn out of the lip oh so much chop and bump to deal with there uh shows you why matt banting wasn't particularly interested in that one with priority so a bit of cross chop there he had to deal with and uh jacob wilcox just heading back out so have a look at that replay you'll see quite a few ripples yeah that inside section it gets like a lot of reverb out the back because it when the close-outs come through it detonates on that shallow bank and then it shoots a reverb from the wash back out and then you've got the back wash from the beach to deal with and it becomes very nasty on that inside section and i mean you saw the contrast at the end of that wave coming to his first one it looks like two different spots and bigger set runs down the line and if it gets too close to this end section you'll see here it just goes so lumpy and bumpy and it's impossible to negotiate and i mean these guys have been doing their very best throughout the event and throwing some crazy maneuvers just caution to the wind and it's been uh it's been very exciting to watch yeah well the wind swung a little bit further around to uh southeast as well so the lip on that wave was crumbling a little bit wasn't as clean as the waves earlier in the heat hopefully the wind will just sort of hold back for another 20 minutes so uh jacob wilcox that wave obviously not factoring into his top two scores just under the 19-minute mark matt banting chasing a 5.67 to move in at first he's just got that throwaway .83 is his second scoring ride and the 6.17 on his is his high score as you can see there chris there's a lot of water moving around a lot of cross chop a fair bit of bouncy uh coming off the um the point as well sort of rushes across that into that small little rock pool and it funnels out the the bottom side of that as we see on his backhand now well a little offset here again for jacob getting busy just throwing it up critically into the lip and uh gets hung up there unfortunately he doesn't ride out of that one it's got bounced off at the end of that one but yeah good little mix up going uh going to the right going to the backhand he's got a solid backhand on him that's for sure it's it's so low and compressed off the bottom then explodes into the lip with a lot of control we'll see this one nice hook out of the lip very electric out of the top ears and then bangs this one through the lip ditches the fins slides it around controlled but just can't ride out so that'll be another throw away for jacob no harm done though no under priority yeah it looks like uh you know having a little stiff around on the priority see if you can uh you know locking something higher than that 4.5 which is not a score he'll want to be keeping later on and so just trying to find something a point or two better than that on his way back out matt banting with priority we see this set coming through now i'm not sure where his positioning is from that angle looks like one's going to back off a little bit anyway or is it yeah well just uh that one not doing the job just running down the sand bank a little bit in front of matt he doesn't have much interest in it so jacob wilcox with that 7.33 in front yeah it's uh getting a bit funky out there we see a wind kind of swinging around the different direction a little texture on the face now and lady panting out there just patiently waiting he knows the ways he wants he's found him all the vent and he's been uh locking some of the biggest numbers we've seen no human reef hazelwood locking in excellent scores yesterday jacob wilcox thereabout i remember seeing ryan cullen after his uh sammy oh he's quarter yesterday against the reef and he was just touching on how committed reef and both jacob were to that end section he said you know i don't even want anything to do with that in section he goes they can have that and they were going full ball at it and just trying to detonate every section that came at him and it was pretty you know unbelievable to watch and very committed approach yeah we saw a reef hit it uh he got smashed by two in a row and then he landed to wondering on his board would go well it handled it you sort of expect to see a crease between the fins but yeah and uh you know matt and jacob on a similar approach now he goes jacob again on an insider this one looks like it might give him something down the line and nice hook off the top there's that section and doesn't quite ride out of that one that just sort of came at him on a fast angle as well shut down really quickly he was going so quick at that section and it just came back at him just as fast and unfortunately just got a bit over the toe side rail there went over the handlebars see replay this one speeding down the line you know he tags it through the lip comes out with more speed than he went into with sets him up for this turn grab rail and he was there he had it and he almost just got over the front foot a little too much got a bit ahead of himself and that was a heavy heavy uh wipe out there a bit of a face slap you would say so he'll dust that one off and get back out well you can see from that drone shot you know the the waves just sort of churning inside out when they hit that bank and uh he's been pretty busy you know he's had three waves now uh under um the priority of matt banting and there's matt with a quick in and out yes replay so that must have been why we're watching jacob's wave um so that'll be a 377 for maddie banting looking for a five six seven so it's uh that is well within reach from the poor macquarie man you know xct surfer been around a long time we saw him burst onto the scene as a junior got a wild card into snapper rocks in 2011. 10 years ago got through to round three went down to the greatest of all time kelly slater the goat and then since then he's had a stellar qs campaign he qualified for the ct for two years 2016 and 17 i believe and then it was uh injury that plagued maddie banting with a chronic back injury yeah and you know he's just been building building back into the no rhythm into the comp scene and he hands downs in career best form now oh without a doubt you know he's just looking so sharp and i just said you know that uh debilitating back injury did hold him back for a couple of years at least and but uh the last two or three years he's just he's surfing has gone to another level and um i think i like about i just love the bottom turn just that flow bottom top turn combo just the speed and power and uh you start off last year with a bang here of course um he's already sort of looking locked in a position for the challenger series which are scheduled for events around the world on from august to december later this year hopefully we see the sydney pro as part of that sydney open i think yeah yeah yeah wouldn't that be great to see and i mean these guys will be at the forefront of yeah you'd have to expect matty banting and jacob and likes to reef hazelwood also and uh you know and then we go over to the women's as well you know molly pickler had already qualified so she was in the final we saw her take it out so similar situation to maddie already qualified for the championship challenger series um probably the biggest superstar name coming out of australia in a very long time and yeah showing why in that last heat from on the ropes down by big points and you know the maturity and the you know the way she just held her nerve and kept calm and just fought back fought back and two back to back sevens yeah it looked she won that now she's won the vista central coast pro she won the vista pro surf series she was awarded the champion of that already into the challenger series so what a resume she's building this year it's just going from strength to strength from molly and obviously getting a notch um getting even without macy they've had one match up before and macy getting the jump on her so it's always satisfying when you get to uh even the score exactly for your fellow club member too north shelley so maybe a bit of a battle for the abb spot there yeah well that's an interesting point yeah yeah it's a good problem to have yeah it's a good problem to have maybe they'll pick one of her as the one the open men you know wouldn't hurt he could definitely fill in a spot there like very solid competitors those two and congrats to both macy and molly on the finals appearance and now with down on 11 minutes 45 on the clock jacob wilcox the powerhouse wa man west australian in the lead seven three three four five maddie banting of six one seven three seven seven looking for a five six seven and holding priority so in a good position to strike back and flip this heat on its head yeah we saw him take that uh 3.77 it was a short wave one maneuver uh jacob had the first wave of that set where he got sort of swatted at the end and matt getting back in the lineup to establish re-establish priority and looking at that shot you can see these sets start to come through both surfers looking to get into position for this mat on the inside looks like it might be a little bit too wide it has backed off so a couple of lines coming through courtesy of this south swell still pushing through consistently had waves all week so this one once again just missing the main part of the bank uh offset 10 minutes and 40 seconds remaining matt banting there in the black looking for that 5.67 more realistically he'll be thinking okay i want something up near that 733 that jacob has his highest score something beyond that and matt is a very very astute competitor yeah he would be looking for to really put you know a solid score on the board he knows that with the likes of jacob wilcox in the final a five six seven probably won't do it because jack i'm only holding a 4-5 very attainable score to improve his situation so definitely like you said maddie would be looking to eclipse that 7-3-3 of jacobs put himself well out in front and you know leave jacob requiring you know a north of a six in the back end of a heat that would be you know pressure for jacob there but the thing is six for these guys is just one air one yeah they do them in their sleep so that's where it gets exciting for us the surf fans and spectators we get to see these guys start going lifting level here he goes up and riding jacob nice searing first turn this is a good looking wave tags it through the lip waiting patiently with this one to hit the inside and here it goes bangs it through the lip just falling on that one that was looking to improve on that 4.5 wouldn't have adjust yeah well uncharacteristic fall off there from jacob wilcox two beautiful turns on the outside and uh again you caught that without um under the priority you see off the bottom there's that high speed carving arc out of the top nice little flow into the lip and just sets this one up on the inside but being patient through that section and yeah just loses it you can see maybe the adrenaline of the final yeah just uh you know those he's so pumped up and he looks so patient and in rhythm on that wave like i couldn't see him falling no not just no and then you know that n section came at him and he just gave it a little bit too much overcooked it probably trying to squeeze every little point he can out of it and unfortunately goes over the handlebars again so wow two unc characteristic falls from jacob wilcox i've barely seen him for the whole event let alone twice in in one heat yeah well that was looking like he was going to move him a six-point ride yeah and would have really put the screws on matt banting so matt banting still with plenty of opportunity out there he's been uh quite patient you know we saw him just with that one way over the 3.77 that's all he's caught in probably the last five or six minutes and uh it looks like he you know he's having a look at this one serious paddle here oh that's uh that'll be no harm done surely he's having a look at the priority board jacob's still on the inside working his way back out so for everyone at home maddie banting holding priority still and he's looks like he's retained it still because without jacob wilcox being in the lineup maddie banting can paddle for a wave and not lose priority until jacob is in the takeoff zone and yeah he's having a look he's probably a little bit worried there is jacob in the position for to gain priority but he's way down the beach yeah he's way down on the inside so good call from the judges there to keep priority with black and he'll have next shot at the best way that comes through the lineup yeah uh jacob just heading back out he a bit of a missed opportunity on that last wave if he finished it clearly he would have extended his lead but um another set just rearing across the bank boy's been doing a lot of duck diving out there today yeah yesterday i got one on the head i actually had to bail it was it's pretty like when those sets come some of them break top to bottom and they're you know six that solid six foot out there and in that corner and they get way bigger as you go further down the beach and got one right on the head yesterday i had to bail on got absolutely flogged and we've seen uh reef this morning paddling out he got washed in twice before getting away from the free surf so it is tricky there are lots to deal with in that lineup and you know like you said a bit of a missed opportunity from jacob on those last two rides because if there's anyone you don't want to give a little sniff is matt banting he takes every opportunity and grasps it and i'm sure he would be going you know nodding his head going thank you and here goes jacob so can he improve his situation well this one's just going to shut down nice hit there now only one maneuver so probably he's not going to make any difference on that 4.5 he thought he'd have a look at it and uh you can see that it's getting a little bit messier out there as this wind swings further around to the east south east looks like it's still around about 10 to 15 knots he's forecast to strengthen almost double that strength uh later on this afternoon probably around about midday actually and uh we've got just under six minutes left in this final the final of the viscera central coast pro and here's a replay of that wave you can see that just one opportunity nice hit that was crazy that angle there made it look so hectic that was crazy surfing from jacob and what we've seen all event here goes maddie banting this could be smell danger for the man in red bumpy looking wave will it stand up for him nice hook out of the pocket it's setting up to hit the inside wow how's this end section oh can he make it no he's covered well that could be a critical moment of this final matt banting looking really sharp on that first term and then it just sort of hit that inside section that was hectic is so shallow so look at the replay here chris uh just taking off deep just being patient through this section just nice carving turn you can see he's eyeing down the line here we go but he sort of that wave just changed dramatically then it just sort of just gurgled everyone literally ate him whole he just uh he didn't have any chance of that n section he threw everything he had at it and i mean how's that heading down the line seeing that coming out you go oh here we go yeah this it could be very deadly if i get it wrong and i mean he didn't really have a chance at that i'd love to see another replay of it free surf you'd just guess yeah the commitment of that yeah you're pulling off that thing every day of the week and these guys are just throwing the kitchen sink at that in section it's very entertaining and very committed so nice carving turn good extension out of that one setting up very patiently and look at that he just disappeared as he was coming down it was like three lips to that thing yeah which one which one i'm gonna hit yeah and uh you saw the shadow of the wetsuit i thought oh he's gonna pop out but no so four minutes and 10 seconds so jacob wilcox now in a very good position uh well he's got that 5.77 so he's extended his lead got rid of the 4.5 one big turn yeah well matt now needs a 6.94 to move in a first that's just under four minutes of course jacob with priority uh once matt gets back out in the lineup be uh interesting to see what jacob's response is we shadow him they see him right next to each other three and a half minutes remaining only needing a 6.94 that's been a throwaway for matt in most other heats in this event yep this would be a huge result for jacob wilcox if he could hold on here he's won a 1 000 q s before but never anything better than that so he had a victory in phillip on back in 2017 so it's been a while between drinks for him but i mean he has been around 2019 three ct events he got the call up for that's right quarterfinals at belle's loss to philippe yeah he was in mags he got uh you know not a good result there but still mixing with the world's best up and riding now tags it through the lip good release check bottom turn over the foam so can he improve on this five seven seven working his way down the line what's he going to do here float the boat wraps it again kicks the tail very controlled so that's an interesting wave there i feel like it's yeah different what we've seen lots of maneuvers but smaller and it kept kind of getting smaller and smaller as it went on it gave them a few opportunities though looking to improve on a 5.77 well take us to the replay what are your thoughts here chris yeah first turn nice and critical in the lip bit caught up there on that second turn this is where he starts to get some work done wraps it back to the power source and here he starts moving float up transitional move and then that slashing move to kick the fin out and well five seven seven he's looking to improve i think it comes just under maybe but i wouldn't be surprised i think it's right there about it's almost spot on it isn't it if you yeah maybe just under well like you said a very different way to what we've seen ridden throughout the you know the semis and finals today that one a little bit smaller a little bit softer but gave me more opportunity so three or four turns and here we see out the back on this replay big hit from maddie banting and again getting critical through that last one and that wave shuts down so two good solid turns he's getting a bit theatrical there he only needed a six nine four right six that is a huge number dropping for maddie banting i think that's the wave of the heat so far that i'd love to see that replay again because wow jacob would have been paddling out watching that and just gone why did i use priority on that little one because i think there's going to be something solid dropping from matt banting and like he's so accustomed to doing just finding it and getting it done in the last minute here we go big hit releases the fins this second turn was huge ditch the fins out the back two critical moves just saw the elation he was so pumped up with that one well i dare say we're gonna see 7.93 it puts him in the lead jacob wilcox now needing a 6.78 what a turnaround because all the momentum was jake a bit you know he's catching a lot of waves he fell on those two end sections but it's still like you know he was just busy out there and he was the one in front of everyone's attention bang bang i got goosebumps after that that was just sick to watch and 14.10 now in the mad max minute the vista pro central coast pro on the line here jacob wilcox looking for a six seven eight 25 seconds to go and now matt's going for a uh priority change i reckon he's uh he's calling it see what the judges think but at this stage things are backed off so jacob wilcox leading the whole heat up until 20 seconds ago and he can't believe it so the shutdown has happened maddie banting pulling a rabbit out of the hat with just a couple of minutes to go with 7.93 took the lead he was chasing uh that's a 6.94 at the time there you go matt banting steals that one from jacob wilcox wow you can't believe it jacob wilcox i reckon he'll be going kicking himself he would am i not banding the heartbreaker he's done it so many times he just denies he finds a way to get it done wow he would be so pumped and back in the winner's circle maddie banting this will be a huge confidence boost leading into the challenger series at the end of the year and his hopes of a ct birth once again jacob wilcox great results second place that'll be a huge confidence booster for him also frustrating loss for him though and um oh it must it must mean so much to matty you can see the passion he had and he's put in so much hard work to get back to where he is and he's in career best form again and well he is in career best form hands down and i feel like so stoked for the kid for sure yeah well outstanding and what a way to wrap up what has been an awesome event matt banting taking that final with a 793 in a 6.17 and he did the job to overtake our friend jacob wilcox right at the end so maddie banting he'll make his way back in he'll be pretty stoked there he's a bit of a victory lap for the defending champ that's two in a row for maddie bounting his third final in a row that's not bad a second two an affinity with avoca beach and the vista central coast pro yes maybe get keys to the town or something he loves this place um but look at him he is pumped and you know you have to be pumped for him too he's had a long road to get back to where he is now and he's putting so much work behind the scenes and tell you what i would not be surprised to see a sticker on that nose very very soon and as he makes his way in congratulations there is your champion of the vista central coast pro 3000 event very elated matt banting taking out jacob wilcox in the final and he's been the standout competitor of the event locking in the highest numbers the highest heat scores and left it till the last year last minute last wave of the event held his nerve and two big backside turns to get it done i would love to see that again because it was just such a great wave to finish off what has been a great event for the man yeah it was uh an awesome day here of course we'll be doing the uh presentations pretty soon we're just going to cut to an ad break but come back we uh when come back you don't want to miss our awards it's going to be to our justified winners maddie banting and molly picklem do not go away [Music] meet er erk likes the planet erk likes to surf erk likes to surf on his planet burke is impressed with that one of course a big thank you to our sponsors zavisla the central coast of vistler pro 3000 presented by mad max and of course mad max presenting the sister revolution pro as well and our major partner visit new south wales now chris enover exciting final there it's been an awesome day surfing an awesome event what are your thoughts on how things wrapped up oh what an event it has been and look at the crowd down here everyone's so pumped up this is hands down the hardest 3000 event i've ever seen the talent pool in this event was second to none we had four ct surfers in the draw bowed out early and then you know we had a great final match up there with uh maddie banting and jacob wilcox maddie bending coming away with the wind clutch performance in the end kept his call showed so much professionalism and uh you know confidence just in that back end of that heat to stay calm and you know last ditch effort gets the score seven nine three and that was all she wrote so a great result for maddie back in the winner's circle with that result he uh he ties reef hazelwood for you know the vissler pro new south wales pro surf series here's that last wave and what a wave it was the second turn the exclamation mark icing on the cake yep well it was so exciting to see and very stoked for maddie i know lenny to be pumped up in his whole support crew it's great for australian surfing yeah definitely he was chasing a 694 for the whole back half of the heat and locked that in with a 7.93 as i said during the uh the final it looked like you know jacob was he was the most prominent surfer in that he was getting busy he had a lot of good ways fell on a couple of end sections and kind of was almost shot a bit of shock the way just turned around all of a sudden because he seemed to be totally in control and then uh just shows you know it's like that's the beauty of uh professional surfing especially at this level you know i can just turn turn on a five cent piece and then you know everything's upside down again it's just amazing we saw the exact same thing happen in the women's final two macy callahan in control the whole heat she just looks like she was going to breeze through that one and take the title and it was uh molly piccolo who just stole it right in the end showed great maturity great confidence to uh you know clutch performance on that last wave and molly pickle them taking out the title here in her backyard against uh fellow north shelley board writers member macy callahan and i mean i'm sure the local community would have been so excited to see that final go down oh without a doubt it was pretty pretty awesome and you know big fans on the beach of both those surfers and it's been an awesome opportunity for the local surfers the local grommets to see what's going on as you can see they're all milling around pretty happy or pretty keen to see the presentation which will be happening on the beach pretty soon and while we wait for
