[Music] hi thanks for joining me here this july my friend tracy and i explored southern alabama we packed a lot in for a few days all while being covered safe when i told tracy we would be visiting monroeville she asked me if i knew about the famous quilters of the geez ben collective in boykin alabama growing up in amish new york state and then moving to lancaster county pennsylvania my mama taught me how to quilt so i was really interested in meeting these talented artists and learning the history and legacy of g's bend [Music] coming from monroeville we found out we would be taking a ferry to cross the alabama river to the country town of boykin this free ferry was super cool [Music] we're going on a ferry ride to jeez ben he's not telling me should i go in and out here this is so cool so i'm here with joe and we're talking about this fairy going over to g's bend and and it's actually the first all-electric uh not not hybrid all-electric ferry in the nation so cool cutting edge very cool and so we were talking about this ferry goes every day how many times five round trips today uh from the town of uh camden which is where we left from to the little town of boyfriends meant residents or maybe i think they might be about about 400 now okay really small town well this is lovely we made it tracy had visited here before and i was looking forward to meeting her friends marianne and emma pettway [Music] looking at here in these photos of my relatives okay someone no related to me and all but they are this way okay [Music] and when did they start um when did you all start quilting i started back in 2014. okay and i've been waiting for 60 minutes what are you working on here you have a piece of all my fins i'm coming off kissing him up [Music] i said gotta give it a name and stamp and then sign it you'll be ready to get out of here somebody want to buy it so i started with the collected 2005 and then in 2006 in january um we had uh a group of people coming out even john lewis came down yeah really yeah i met him got photography uh that year because we've spoken going to um atlanta to the high museum in march okay yeah and so then they asked me to be the manager so i've included this there since and his name was william arnett how did he discover you well uh this book um he saw this quilt in our um in a book on a ripped across some firewood and so he told he asked anime was it at her house yeah but she had forgot she had the quilt and she looked for the quilt but was it out here no it's not him i mean when he saw it where wasn't he where was it he saw this quilt right here he was in a book and he saw this piece in the pool see somebody else had taken the picture and he said when he saw this quilt on this fire firewood he said i need to find a lady that made this film so when he find miss anime that's how turned out to be they exploded after that see that was the first book they did and this one right here my um jacket kind of torn it was red red white and black and then my mama put that's the one that put outside that's your mama's quill when you came that way now no that's what i told windy that was not yeah a friend of mine has done it for me and it is beautiful thank you it was somebody out of washington this lady named how she was the one that painted it when did she do that i think about two three almost three years ago okay i was trying to make it like this and then i got to i think i got to this point here i thought let me do a range really quick she might have more purple in it than her experience oh looks like and um maybelline doll mini mini mini coleman okay living deceased my aunt rooting all the deceased lot of the moon this is emma grandmother oh my the moment deceased loretta pettway still living my lungs pit with my daughter grandmother uh she's deceased anime young deceased loretta pettway again living just keep that weight living and head and we see so all these other 10 that was on the stamp staff in 2006 absolutely but i don't think so i'm out of here you got names on yep people's names and then she finishes them and sends them to you look at that corduroy yeah someone might take apart i think i hate this bill to help we got a bunch of letters oh look at that both spoken with together see his name [Music] she's getting marianne to work emma hopped in the car and took us for a ride to their family house which has been in their family for generations when the slave owner came in people really didn't have houses these houses here uh he came and he built things out of back in the early 20s or 50s and at early 60s [Music] the house that both of their houses were made and they used newspapers at the time when people built housing because there was a lot of holes in between the planks so they used the newspaper and clothing to keep the air yeah there's still newspaper in that one room yeah and uh so that's how uh they got known how the older men came and they all work together to be a little house so they can have a decent people who lived in them built them the people that live and that the whole community would get together and help each other that's kind of like an old-fashioned farming and this house uh was my uh that's my great grandmother lucy moon this is lusa mooney house and uh and she's my great grandmother and is she the one who there's a picture of him there or it's your grandmother not not your great mother oh that was my grandma and we hadn't really came back and re-did the house since uh i would kind of move out so this is it but you talking about real people it is very nice my we husband get away this is your dinner right yeah come up here get out on the porch because i used to cut out pieces and sit there on the porch and make people and we had a group to come after you all did we had a group to come uh they was from georgia and stayed here a couple days after visiting her family home emma showed us a few more projects she's working on these ladies are some of the hardest working women i've ever met like every great piece of art a signature means so much more we were so grateful to meet marianne and emma pettway and look forward to seeing our new friends soon so after our visit to g's bend we headed back to the ferry and made our way to spanish fort alabama an historic blakely state park and civil war site we had a little adventure though
