morning point assisted living in Alzheimer's memory care partners with Gentiva home health to better prepare its caregivers together they offer a free virtual dementia tour it's very important because it changes your perception of what dementia is because I think our perception is that it's a short-term memory loss for getting your keys things like that but as you go through that process of the virtual dementia tour you realize it's much more than you realize that they're struggling on a day to day basis and just that few minutes that it takes to go through that tour opens your eyes it's very emotional it's very eye opening experience for our caregiving staff it's so crucial that they go through it for many reasons but it offers a better understanding of what our residents are going through and they're gonna be better caregivers because of that really our goal is just to educate caregivers staff really anybody that comes in contact with somebody that has dementia even family members on what it's like to have that terrible disease our Kirk Harris Hospice I'm just really curious either I've never been in the months and if someone who has Alzheimer's and really reticent so that we would have more of the realization of what it's like to be in dementia patients first thing I'm going to ask you to do is to take the foot shoe inserts here I'd like you to put them in your shoes with their Berkeley sign up and that is to stimulate peripheral neuropathy there's so many early patients have its thing I want you to do is to choose a pair of goggles that you're gonna wear during this work and those goggles have yellow or brown one on purpose because the macular degeneration which happens so often with the elderly when they see things they have a yellow halo it's caused by the metallurgy generation so that's to simulate low vision asked you to Don pair of headphones this is going to simulate decreased it with folio and an increase in background noise which are we narrow our elderly population often experience okay here's a pair of gloves for you put on this is going to stimulate your peripheral neuropathy there you guys do not have some arthritis as well as know everything I'll go in with you that while we're in there I'll be okay I want you to find the white shirt and put it on write a note to your family with three sentences and put in the envelope set the table fold the towels fill a cup halfway with water ready it was very interesting when he gave me my instructions I heard part of what he was saying I got most of the tasks I just didn't hear the full details of what to do with the task very hard very confusing something I thought I could do just felt lost it wasn't a things he said or anything that he said I really had a hard time understanding but now I know what it's like that was very frustrating to me like I'm often wandering everywhere I was supposed to do then I walked in another and I no idea what I was doing really people are saying that you know they can't believe how just tax that we consider simple become more difficult and really it's open their eyes to the need for just simple communication with those folks it's just knowing that you should know how to do it but not able to I feel like we're two things right enough to your family with three sentences okay the envelope at the table that was the other thing to do fold the towels and fill a cup halfway with water okay yeah well I've always had a care for people like that know that it's harder for them but now I guess I've walked in their shoes it's a little more understanding it makes them a better caregiver because they're more empathetic they're more compassionate and it just provides a knowledge that we can't provide in a regular setting they are walking a mile in their shoes which is huge an eye-opening experience one more way mourning point ensures it has the right caregivers for your mom and dad you
