Video Editor Reacts to Stray Kids & Charlie Puth ‘Lose My Breath’

this video is freaking disgusting it's it's so good oh my goodness hi my name is Jordan I'm a professional film editor for artists like these [Music] guys the editing is so freaking good already oh my goodness first of all this shot is gorgeous we have sound design so much sound design if you are able to put sound design in a music video it just brings it so much more to life it feels like a visceral environment that you're just sucked into and I love that this right here is an fpv drone so it literally looks like the Drone is flying through the fireworks or they just simulated it with VFX all these fireworks could very well be VFX but this has the feeling this shot right here of an fpv drone and then this match cut is dirty bro oh my go okay so we have a comet turning into a water bubble and it just has a nice cross fade oh that is so disgustingly good bro they're already just cooking they're locked in and just that Riser the first N9 seconds are already disgusting and then literally matches his mouth too okay so it's like three Mash Cuts right there the comet to the bubble to his mouth which it looks like he's trying to get some water from the faucet which we're so we're thinking about his lips this is getting already really really strange but that's that's literally where the match cut led to so our eyes are looking at his [Music] lips dude these lenses are nice this is interesting it looks like we have fireworks outside the window so fireworks are just kind of like a theme already in this in this music video they probably represent something but dude check out these lenses look how swirly the edges are the edges that are out of focus create this like swirly pattern it reminds me of a Helios 44 lens which is like a a really old vintage Russian lens but when you look at the images that come out of it the outsides are just very swirly and it's not realistic but it creates a really cool character to the lens and you can just see right here even in this shot the corners are very streaky and swirly it's fun it's fun I like it gives it kind of like a dream dream like effect now but I know this is such good editing bro whoever put this together is a pro I tried to find the the director and editor for for this video couldn't find it if you know please tell me I just want to shake their hands cuz they're killing it if you're looking for Quick Cuts or just transitional elements like this using sound effects helps so much and using inserts and just quick little moments that have sound attached to it right here we have him grab his jacket boom that has a sound to it it's an action he walks away we see his footsteps really close we have a quick shot of the faucet that's actually working now all of a sudden it seems like it wasn't working before but now it is the theories are are starting to develop they're starting they're starting to load up shoot it's like he's [Music] parched Charlie poth can write a mean song bro Charlie poth can write Bops he can write bangers this is freaking song of the summer bro this is fire sorry I'm just really stuck on these Quick Cuts I love how we go from a foot shot to a little ceiling transition down to the launder m and then in the laundry matat we keep going back to the same shot so that one that one again I guess just twice but it's kind of weird I was like why are we going back oh wait did he just steal a jacket hold up so he walks in there's a red article of clothing he steals the red article of clothing okay that's why he's looking all sus like look at this boy some fishy's going on here all right what the freak what piece of jewelry is that dude what the heck yeah he just he just stole that [Music] [Music] thing okay so he's out of water but the fish has water how the world turn upside down dude this is so good I'm so just sucked into the world because of the sound [Music] design so there's just a whole Water Theme here just a lack of water plastic bag kind of reminds me of losing your breath like you can't breathe in a plastic [Music] bag eyes it's like my heart woo and just those Quick Cuts right before the the beat kicks in on that second half of the chorus just the so good so good boom okay so we can't get [Music] water see just this thing's all about match Cuts but not match Cuts in the way that we normally talk about normally I'm always like oh look that dance move and then cut together with that dance move they match because they had the exact same dance but this is taking elements that aren't quite super alike and matching them together so a lot of what we're using is actually firework match Cuts or just really you know obscure inserts and creating match cuts out of that like in the intro so we have the fruit the fruit Falls which is funny cuz it says my world turned upside down and sometimes especially like orange peels get related to the Earth so it's like if the fruit is like the Earth and it's literally falling during the lyric upside down and it falls into some more fireworks falling into the fireworks continuing to fall in the reflection of this mask so all three of those shots just cut so seamlessly together because we have falling in each of them it's it's so dirty and we get sound to accompany it dude all the sound is so [Music] good I love just random insert shots that just create texture and then especially when you just add the sound into that texture it's so good this shot what what is the point of this being in here it doesn't really have a whole lot of purpose other than Vibes like it's pretty like it really does show off the lenses like the lenses are just gorgeous but you hear the rain it just adds texture [Music] man nice clear frame tilted up right there dude I love how the whole scene was just setting up with them all walking into this intersection and then all of a sudden a dance just starts breaking out I talked about this with I I think my last Las seraphim reaction where I'm noticing that they actually kind of set up a dance Break by showing the members walk to a location and then they start dancing cuz when you think about real life you know if there was a dance break they don't just teleport to the next place and start dancing they have to go there they have to get out the car they have to walk around then they have to stand up and be like 5 six 7even 8 hopefully they don't make that noise is while dancing like they all they're all congregating [Music] here and dude this was in the teaser bro and I saw this I was like why are they not going freaking hard when the beat comes in it's so it subverts my expectations like crazy so it's very controlled movements but then the beat comes in right here and that's when you would expect him to just go like crazy they don't do that they're just still completely controlled everything's just so smooth my expectations are like cuz that's not what I expected what a great articulate way to phrase that Jordan that's awesome it looks like they're literally adding a blur or they have a filter that's blurring the sides cuz these sides are like incred the corners are incredibly blurred crazy but see this contrast this controlled makes this part right here feel so much [Music] better again the texture shot what the freak is this I don't know what this is but it's pretty it's artistic it's abstract it has a sound to accompany it Vibes pure Vibes I love it the lyric is also it's like I'm in shock this is maybe what you would be seeing if you were in shock your vision may not be clear you might have this like fuzzy thing this fuzzy noise in your in your head love it they're making us feel what the song is talking [Music] about dude and this rain in this the rain sounds oh [Music] shoot they're getting the K-pop Zooms in now oh yep oh yep I also just love the dedication to the foot shot that's also a weird phrase but you don't see this in kpop you don't see a little just like quick foot insert you know when they're just like kicking the leg up you don't you don't see that and I kind of just appreciate it it's a fresh perspective this whole video is a fresh perspective on what a K-pop video is I love sticking in that shot [Music] nice like's coming over me feel's something [Applause] [Music] okay dude okay my breath is gone already this is so exciting you probably are like Jordan why are you freaking out that just felt so nice did didn't that just feel nice to watch it just felt like a a hug like it just felt right I don't know how to explain it okay I'm thinking the fireworks just might mean the sparks in the relationship I don't really know what to say beyond beyond that I mean I think the fireworks represent the relationship and how it was blossoming it was awesome but then something changed and now it's not so great I don't know I should stick to video editing and not talk about the meaning of the song cuz I have no idea this is like my first time seeing it okay we get a real nice directional blur transition in here because right here we have a ton of just directional blur but the camera is not actually moving so how do they create that that or you could just add a literal directional blur effect but we get a ton of just really crazy trippy footage because the lyric is I feel like there's something coming over me literally all this is is the shutter speed sped up and the camera Operator just like holding the camera and being like that's it there you go and then you just use that throw a whoosh in there y'all if you need a sound effect just to enhance anything put a whoosh done here's a whoosh and then you just add a little bit of underwater sounds yeah bro this is sick and they do such a good job of just blending the two shots together cuz you could just cut this to this but no instead they have a blur something else and then cutting into this underwater shot fire and it kind of just Blends it together and then we have reversed underwater face shots so you know when you're breathing the bubbles come out and Float to the surface you reverse it the bubbles are going to come down into your mouth so it just it looks un natural and it just is very interesting and then these match Cuts all they do is literally take a light like like this light for example literally all you do is just like a and it just changes the lighting around them and boom just match cut a bunch of those together and you're good to go so cool over over and then this is so nice we keep cutting back right on the Lyric over me we say over me cut away to the water shot and then back over me so we're just establishing this language that whenever there's a lyric we just cut back to the the light moving Pace shots [Music] so right when the harmonies come in here cut away and back cut away and [Music] back dude not [Music] the that was nice the camera repositioning on the post-production side the editor actually repositions the camera to match with their arm movements and and everything in the day so we start wide push in digital zoom and then when they put their hand up to their mouth right during this Movement we do a quick zoom out right boom and then zoom in and to the left as they do this thing you know it's just a little bit like every time that there's a Dance Movement Like a change of movement so here's one movement here's another movement you just change the way that the camera's moving in post and it matches so well just pick a direction and send it that that was [Music] sick okay so everybody is stopped in the Raceway and taking pictures or videos of the fireworks in the sky and these guys are running towards the fireworks they're they're chasing after the [Music] relationship and everybody else is just watching they're on the sidelines I don't know I have no idea if this has any Merit oh that's sick Bro reversing both of those shots I feel like these bubbles are VFX like there's no way you could get a bubble just to look that that great in real life unless that's like a marble or something yeah I bet you that's a marble they threw in there so this is probably Yep this is for sure a marble just to simulate a bubble and then they reverse it and have the little water come up oh that's sick and then you got to always put sound with it so listen yeah that's what makes it word is literally the sound sound is everything
