[Music] [Music] [Music] hello and welcome to the latest series of throttling Classics I am joined today by Gunslinger Matthew pretty good afternoon and uh International jet Setter YouTuber Tom xon who clearly didn't get the I'm going to wear Wellies memo do you own a pair I actually don't own a pair of Wellies at all there are no Wellies in my possession I have no Wellies this is as country as it gets so uh sorry about that everyone no worries at all now we are here ahead of the May historics auction which will be happening at the farra international Exhibition Center and we have got a couple of very special Range Rovers they are bespoke Holland and Holland examples so Matthew just tell us a little bit about your P38 yes I've got the P38 Holland and Holland this particular one with a 4.6 L V8 so nice and Frugal on the fuel of course indeed yes and up here we have something a little bit more modern yes the l322 the darling of the modern Classics SUV Market at the moment yeah it is I have actually got one of these my dad's got one of those and many others cuz obviously I come from farming stock so therefore I was brought up in Range Rover so I am very excited to have a go with both of these today and unlike Tom you're fully equipped for the day like I was I was like I was born like this perfect I'm going watch what I say about these then yeah you yeah you better have because if not old matey boy with a shotgun I was going to say I'm keeping a little eyee on that I'm not I'm not winding out M today so who is first I think we should probably take this old girl out first shouldn't we perfect let's go and the car hey you Cheeky Monkey right let's leave Tom behind at the farm the P38 Wonder wagon but I have to give a nod to the predecessor the classic that was around for 20 years I think it was before and of course I think the CSK was probably the first nod to thinking oh we can do Luxury in these yeah and oh potentially we could make some money well I must admit this was a seed change yeah massively this car was what power-wise right isn't impressive 218 brake horsepower for something that was 2.2 tons plus wood yes and and even worse of course the the base models had like 2 and 1/2 ler diesel which needed a manual gear box just to get around yeah of course we have got a 4.6 V8 special in this but the wonderful thing was all of a sudden you were like this is like being in my drawing room on Wheels yeah even things like this and leather and everything is comfortable I mean it it lacks obviously some of the smoother refinements of your modern car but bear in mind this was this was back in this was 2000 this was towards sort of halfway through it started a lot ear in this this would have been like nothing else it's like a seven series was or an S-Class but in a Great Big R for yeah absolutely my parents actually still run one of these they still run it not Holland in Holland but yeah one of those dad's a very good uh mechanic and sort of engineer as well as being a farmer so he let's say gives it a little bit of you know hospital treatment whenever it needs it this particular one is I think we're sort of talking late teens in value um given how rare it is it seems good value and they are absolutely pivotal in the way that Range Rover started to do these collaborations and CSK started it and then we've got these Holland Holland of course that's learned to the l32 and I think there's going to be a new one for the new car so I think it's that sort of lovely Range Rover feel of trying to make people understand the country andess trying to make it Hulk back to Land Rover Defenders almost hence why you know the world family owned them but obviously with that layer of luxury as well so let's talk about design Duets because obviously you know we're comparing the two this one and the later car and I know the later car has become a bit of the darling recently but this was the pivotal moment that range R went from being utility to luxury and it took them a while they used they tried every single design house to get the design right made two in clay eventually but we had Bas looking at this they were all having a crack at designing the Range Rover and in the end it became an in-house design because most of the other designs apparently were forgetting the Wellies that's brilliant but what about the engine choices well what could we have had I mean in any P38 you sort of had the I think it was a standard 4 L V8 but slightly underpowered for such a big unit the 2.5 L diesel which was like a tractor engine yeah there was though a manual gearbox option oh last manual gearbox on the Range Rover yeah but the one thing that I think they should have made because it was in a prototype was they actually did put a V12 in a prototype car can you imagine the noise the pull I mean if you put the two that would have put this ahead a little bit I think having a V12 engine it was from the BMW 7 Series of course cuz at that point they revised the original Rover V8s took the BMW V8s and then thought well what about BMW V12 why didn't they do and especially imagine that's in a Holland and Holland oh that would have been something else love it so what spec set the Holland and Holland apart from the standard HSC thank you for asking the starters the color the green tin turn green it's called and that is unique to Holland and Holland so the're same as the other car they're both in that tin and green Holland and Holland Green yeah you've also got some lovely inlays yes and a little Holland and Holland in L into this woodwork yeah which are quite subtle in this yes this first sort of incarnation of a Holland and Holland main D then you have got electric windows tinted screens electric sunroof we've got these picnic tables behind us here yeah it's a bit of Rolls-Royce yes yeah so they definitely you know uplifted everything that you could possibly need for the late mid these these all generally came with gun cabinets in the back though this one's sadly gone same with the L2 a lot of them seem to have disappeared I don't know where they went maybe people took them out and put them in their next car possibly I mean they were quite a piece of engineering lovely beautiful wood yeah matching all this veneer in here and obviously strangely for drink drivers it would have lots of alcohol in it which seems a bit odd I know doesn't it but um but equally having been shooting you can understand what they do they they turn up and it becomes in effect sort of a a mobile home from home isn't it ammunition driving and alcohol why not so what did make this people of course as we spoken about was this was the first by the time they got to that more modern car problem Moder yeah easy for me to say but by the time they got to the L 322s and beyond their competition had really HED up yes this was really groundbreaking but by the time you get to that car we've got MLS x5s that had to compete yeah the BMW X5 was a big hitter because not only did it give you luxury but they knew how to make it handle yeah exactly so this sort of created that Niche which in effect BMW Mercedes should all turn the hats to right so let's head back and see Tom at the farm see how his uh attire is is shaping up whether his white terrain is are still white and then you'll head off over to Farmer yeah and we'll meet you there perfect we'll see the venue for the next auction what a throwback hi hi um you know what it's so lovely to to know and to appreciate that this car really was one of the first luxury SUVs that spawned a mental Market 25 years ago yeah yeah talking of mental uh your shoe seem to be a little bit whiter than when we left modern country gent over here they'll all be doing it soon why the modern country gent do you want to take me out on this modern country I would love to uh first things first there's clean caret in there so take your W off okay thank you I'll see you at Farm boys thank you very much all right let's go wafting wafting you close your eyes I mean I'm not going to so don't panic but if you close your eyes you wouldn't actually know you're in a an older one of these and I've never actually driven one I'm a massive range over fan boy Y and I've never actually driven this generation at all and so they're really popular right now mean a lot of the YouTubers and Clon and and they've all really been hyping up the fact that they are the last of the true range Rivers as they call them this Holland and Holland car which I think from new and this is number one the number one of the Holland H cars it was on Top Gear was featured everywhere number plaque down there this particular car we think was about 140,000 new wow so obviously it would come from you buy a car from range rver it would sent to over V frch would then use Holland and Holland as a design house basically to create this for circa £40,000 and the only shame is and I've sold a number of these hor now have you no gun cabinet every one of them the gun cabinets have disappeared funny that I don't know where and I strange if you can't find them so this particular car how much do you think I don't know 14 new there's a lot of intrinsic value in here the wood and the detailing that's going on and the stitching I it's a really hard one to price and there's only what five I think I think there was only five revised as in generation 2 it's 5 L supercharge on on Hollands its guide price is so 28 to 34 strugling £30,000 it's a lot of car and the 100 you're probably thinking 140 Grand you know that that doesn't get you a huge amount of car these days depressingly but what like when was that that was 15 years ago so 140 back then probably would have bought you a yeah relatively nice calf and a relatively nice area big yeah exactly big big money although very it's very spoke though isn't it I mean the little things like the wood inside a Holland Holland Range Rover of this time if you wished you could have it match the wood of your gun I do love this the spoke lever and you can see a little bit from the camera here and you'll see in the TVs this back section here is incredible it's got full fridge heated rear seats it's got uh crystal decanters back there I'm amazed you're not in the back a time up here with you aren't we they do you know what as well this generation I'm going to try and demonstrate it here there I mean obviously the new one's got four-wheel steer look at that but you'd never be able to do that in one turn I mean I'm not sure how legal that was but it's more taxi like you know it's not got four-wheel steer but you managed to get around there so that was pretty impressive they're big but actually this before they turned into kind of Yachts on Wheels so this particular car with a 5 L V8 I means have a quick looks so it was the facelift version and I think it was 503 brake horsepower 461 FTB talk that's important you're going to still want to pull something along I'm sure yep I don't know the order 60 times I think it would be surprisingly quick for something that weighs an excess of 2.7 tons 2.7 yeah so design wise though on the l322 compared to the P38 when they designed it there was a wind the that it wasn't the P30 wasn't quite similar enough to the classic yeah and so this does have that slightly higher back feel like a Range Rover Classic I think that's why people now are starting to really think that it's a really classic shape for land R Range Rover I think that's where the P38 slightly loses out in design although it was course it was pivotal I don't think it looks quite as handsome right I think we're approaching Farm BR then okay not around the corner so let's uh see if Vick's made it in one piece let's see have fun boys a lovely waft well that is it for episode two of throttling Classics and that's two of the most interesting 4x4 SUVs from the '90s and the ughs there are plenty of other machines from other manufacturers on offer at the historics auction here at the farm International Exhibition Center preview days are the 10th and 11th of May and the auction itself on the 12th now if
