welcome back to the channel in today's video I wanted to go over a technique that he's pretty often it's essentially a dolly Zoom effect which is usually done in camera but this one's done all in post and it's called the vertigo effect [Music] it's essentially the same as the dolly Zoom but the only difference is that the dolly Zoom is actually done in camera with the lens as someone is pulling away they're also at the same time zooming in and focusing and that creates that sort of like crazy effect in the background with the subject staying centered the vertical effect is very similar but you can do this with any camera any focal length all you have to do is be able to keep your video steady and centered on a subject as you're either walking back or walking forward it's really easy let me show you how it's done so you can do the vertigo effect with essentially any camera right now I'm going to shoot this on the fx3 but you can just with your iPhone and I'm using a gimbal essentially you want to keep your footage really steady so again the key here is to make sure that your subject is centered throughout the whole frame and what I'll usually do is I'll do two passes I'll do one where I'm panning or zooming into Kai stop and then after that I'll do it where I'm pulling out and essentially the same movement but just give me variation in the edit [Music] and I'll do the same thing again this time I'm just going to pull away [Music] I'm gonna just do a couple different variations of this maybe start a little bit lower in the second one here [Music] all right once you've shot your clip it's really simple in the editing process you're going to pick the starting and end points of your clip and essentially you're going to want to match the size of your subject in both the beginning and end so for instance in this clip we have Kai standing here and he's at this certain height so what I'm going to do is I'm using the grids the grid lines and I'm going to outline exactly his size and location in the frame after that I'm going to keyframe that and create a second set of keyframes at the end of the clip and then resize Kai so that he's the same size as what he was at the beginning of the clip that way when you press play and as your actual camera movement is sort of dollying back you're going to be manually zooming via keyframes so that Kai Remains the Same Size this creates that really cool vertical effect you see in the background while maintaining Kai in the same location same situation and really just playing with the perspective of the background so some main takeaways from this technique are that it's essentially the dolly Zoom effect but the dollysium effect is when you do it in camera where as you like walk out you zoom in your camera it's a lot more difficult to do that than this vertical effect this vertical effect mimics the same style of like vertigo as the subject kind of stays Central as you're zooming out the benefits of the vertigo effect are that you can do this by yourself you don't need somebody to manually sort of fiddle with the focusing or the zooming and you can do this with an iPhone you can do this without any camera we're using a gimbal with the sort of like wide angle lens but this works with any focal length and essentially as long as you can keep your subject really centered and stable then it works in basically any situation you can even couple this with sort of like a rotating effect to create a rotating vertical effect maybe I'll do a video about that in the future but for now this setup's really easy and it creates a really interesting visual trick that you can add to your videos as always you have any questions leave them in the comments below if you have any tips or tricks that you want me to show in a future video also leave those in the comments like subscribe I'll be jazz I forget anything all right thanks again and I'll see you guys in the next one [Music] foreign [Music]
