hey everyone welcome to 601 travels today we're going to be checking out the beautiful northeastern state of vermont and we're going to take a look at some of the most interesting places you can visit what can we say about vermont that you probably don't know already yes they have a lot of maple syrup and there is one cow for every 3.8 people which equals a lot of cows and a lot of dairy but that's okay because we like cows with that being said vermont is an awesome place to visit or relocate if you're looking for the perfect new england setting to live in the median household income is about 61 000 and houses cost about 220 000 on average you can and will get a lot of house for your money with a property tax rate of 1.83 they make it really easy to enjoy living here just be ready to deal with things like ice and snow overall the towns and cities are safe everywhere has its problems but people choose to live and raise their families here because they feel safe if you enjoy activities you can't go wrong any time of the year so let's go ahead and take a look at the top 10 things that make vermont a great place number 10 brattleboro's farmer's markets also on the massachusetts border is the bigger small town of brattleboro with 12 000 people it has grown enough to have what you need close by but still small enough to where you'll definitely run into people you know downtown and you won't mind doing it one of the must do things for people here aside from getting high legally is to do the weekly farmers market it's not just a market it's something you do every week this is where farmers and artists put out their best work to the public and everyone has a good time from vegetables flowers pottery and pastries tents and tables are lined with all kinds of goodies fresh handmade with love types of goodies to keep you moving and happy there's also live music dancers and people in general just walking around relaxing and having a good time everything about brattleboro is laid back and this is something really fun to do number nine rock of ages granite quarry i know a rock quarry doesn't sound too exciting but this one isn't like any quarry that you've seen rock of ages is the largest deep hole granite quarry in the world and it is located get this graniteville vermont you can't make this stuff up when you visit for a tour you'll board a school bus that will take you to the observation deck overlooking the entire operation the size of this place is enormous and you can see the factory in motion when the tour is complete you can grab your own souvenir of granite from the scrap bin and head for the granite bowling lane this is a visitor favorite and is pretty neat if you like rocks and want to see this place tours are rain or shine and depart five times per day number eight hildeen vermont is so loved by people for its amazing scenery and weather that even the son of former president lincoln decided to have this summer home here the home of robert todd lincoln was built in manchester back in 1908 and sits on 412 acres of park-like grounds you can tour the 24-room estate and see all the original furnishings like they are frozen in time some highlights are the fully restored 1908 1000 tube pipe organ that cost eleven thousand five hundred dollars back in 1908 in a bronze casting of former president lincoln's hands the estate is open year round and the grounds are so massive that during the weekend the 12 miles of walking trails are turned into ski trails during the summer the gardens are everything you'd picture them to be making this a great stop not only for historical reasons but because it's one of the most significant sites open to the public in vermont number seven ben jerry's factory vermont may be famous for the maple syrup but don't forget about their ice cream in the town of waterbury you can visit the ben jerry's factory and see where 350 000 pints of ice cream per day are created a tour through the facility will last about 30 minutes and will put you in the action as the ice cream is produced and packaged right before your eyes once you're done with the informational tour you'll end up in the scoop shop where you guessed it you can try all different flavors of the creamy goodness number six vermont country store people travel all over the country to go here and experience this famous general store in person you may get the catalogs in the mail but seeing everything in real life is something totally different than looking at printed pages a lot of people think the catalog came after the store had been established it was actually the other way around the story came after here you can smell the candles coffee leather goods and maple logs burning in their stoves located in the small village of western vermont this generational icon offers thousands of home goods all under its quaint little roof bringing you back to a simpler place and time since 1946 the vermont country store has been a place you could go to get what you need and today it still holds the same family values number five shelburne museum when you picture a museum you think of a building with things of historical significance in them but the shelburne museum will change that located in this small town of shelburne this museum has an open-air concept that has a ton of things to see to start there are over 39 exhibit buildings that include things like a huge round barn the ss ticonderoga a lighthouse and a railroad depot that were all relocated to the 45 acres of grounds they sit on throughout all the exhibits there are over 150 000 works for you to view giving you a glimpse into the early life of those who settled in vermont aside from the buildings and exhibits the grounds have many gardens and food is available for picnics the shelburne museum is a big attraction and takes a good portion of the day to see everything so make sure you schedule enough time to see it all number four sugar bush resort if skiing snow tubing sledding or anything snow related is your thing you need to pack your bags and head to warren vermont just 50 miles from the burlington airport people travel from all over the world to go to this mountain sugar brush is one of the largest and most loved ski resorts in new england covering 4 000 acres there are 111 runs and 53 miles of trails for people of all ages and levels to ski on for advanced skiers lincoln peak has a 2400 foot vertical drop the fun doesn't stop when the snow melts though summer is just as fun with activities like biking golf tennis zip lines and sightseeing lift rides there are also luxurious accommodations that give you the opportunity to stay right on the mountain any time of the year you visit you'll see some of the most beautiful sights in vermont and have a huge variety of activities to choose from number three lake champlain there are a lot of choices when it comes to lake activities in vermont but arguably one of the best is lake champlain located on a 120 mile stretch between vermont new york and canada it has 587 miles of shoreline providing an exceptional venue for kayaking canoeing and fishing you will be surrounded by beautiful mountains and awesome marine life there are also over 318 species of birds alone if you're into watching birds lake champlain is one of those places you have to visit in person to see really how beautiful it is along with all the fun things you can do in the water the shorelines and surrounding areas offer a lot as well as hiking and biking trails number two camel's hump state park sometimes you can tell right away how certain things get their names this is one of them camel's hump is a mountain in the green mountains of the dixbury area of vermont it is the third highest mountain in vermont coming in at 4083 feet and is considered to be one of the best hiking spots in the state it'll take about an hour or so hiking time to reach the summit where you will see breathtaking 360 degree views there are dozens of trails and ways to the top and primitive camping is allowed here hikers say the trek to the top is difficult and should be done slowly with caution as this is a more advanced hike it's also one of the busiest state parks in the state as far as outdoor activities with trails you can't ask for a better challenge or better views than camel's hump state park number one covered bridges one thing that makes vermont so beautiful is its countryside the roads that twist through the mountains and have overlooks to valleys below showing you why this is one of the most beautiful states in the country on some of these roads you'll find over 100 covered bridges that are treasures and a reminder of how simple and primitive life once was vermont has more covered bridges per square mile than any other state and makes its point to keep them maintained and up to standard to handle the weather and stand a test of time some of the bridges date back to 1820 and they come in all colors shapes and sizes you don't have to look too hard to find them if you drive around long enough you are bound to find a few the windsor cornish covered bridge spans the connecticut river between windsor vermont and cornish new hampshire at 465 feet long it is the longest two-span covered bridge in the world and the longest wooden bridge in the united states other well-known famous bridges are the silk road covered bridge and the northfield falls covered bridge most of these are still open for vehicles to drive on so if you get the opportunity to do so make
