with you a little bit later. Thank you. The city of Vallejo has officially declared a state of emergency over police departments. Staffing city council unanimously approved that proclamation late last night at a meeting. So the question is, what happens now? Where will the city get help to keep the streets safe? Brooks Jarocz went looking for answers today. Sometimes it's what you don't see. Vallejo Police are so severely short staffed. City council proclaimed a state of emergency Tuesday. We're working as much as we can on recruiting , but the officers here are tasked with the lot. Deputy Chief Joseph Gomez says the pressure is on to leverage other resources. Only 34 officers are assigned to patrol. A few are planning to leave next month. Now, this proclamation will allow Vallejo police to turn to neighboring agencies for help. Officials say the goal is filling roughly 20 temporary positions to keep the community safe, and those will go into effect once we make these connections with the agencies that are willing to help us out, whether it's Solano County, Napa PD, CHP, right now, more than 50 funded officer positions are unfilled. Civil rights attorney Melissa Nold says her phone has been constantly ringing. There's a lot of people that are wanting to sue for the lack of response. People are feeling like the stress and anxiety and danger. They feel like they're in. My son and two other kids, several voiced their fears at Tuesday's council meeting, including this woman who lost her son to gun violence. Nobody's looking for who killed my son. Interim police Chief Jason Tarr says several strategies have been implemented to fill gaps from no longer respond to alarm calls to disbanding the traffic division and even rotating detectives onto patrol shifts. There is already been mandatory overtime and soon all patrol shifts could be 12 hours Gotten so bad that multiple individuals have have indicated that they are intending to move because of the lack of response to calls for issues like domestic violence and restraining orders. Vallejo police say improving response times is a top priority, but that, they say, requires help knowing that hiring and training new permanent officers and filling the ranks could take years. We want the community to understand that we're doing everything we can to protect them, and it's on our minds constantly during this public safety emergency, the city manager is required to make sure that all necessary resources are provided to the police department. City Council review the staffing situation every 60 days in Vallejo,
