the alamodome the mace traces its roots to the medieval period when it was a weapon used by mountain knights in western europe it has been a symbol of scholarship and integrity for universities since the 11th century today the university marshal carries the mace to indicate the solemnity of the occasion and the confirmation of the academic process please welcome the members of the faculty and stage party as they enter the alamo dome the stage party includes the university president the provost members of the cabinet and the university leadership council including the academic deans of the urban serving hispanic thriving public higher education dr amy is passionate about utsa's role as san antonio's university of the future by preparing graduates to tackle our society's grandest challenges since assuming the presidency in 2017 dr amy has outlined a bold vision for utsa as a model for student success and a great public research university that fosters opportunities and prosperity for our city and our world please join me in welcoming president taylor amy provost sp thank you for the introduction good afternoon road runners today feels extra special as we're able to gather here at the dome again to commemorate this very special occasion your graduation and i'm so delighted to be able to do this in person thank goodness yeah i feel like cheering about that too by the way you can make as much noise during this ceremony as you want you can do it because you want to you can do it because you're in a college that you love you can do it because you're a road runner you can do it in concert with friends and family and loved ones whenever you want to yell you yell [Applause] i wish someone had said that at my graduation [Music] so to it's you gotta have some fun right today is a day of celebration graduates this is your day this is your big day this is your future looking day you are the class of 2021. yeah you are i really need to say this though it's important to stop the moment and recognize this these last two years have been incredibly tough for everyone for you for our community for your loved ones to each and every one of you i marvel at your resiliency as you visit and sit with us today that you're here you made it you're ready to graduate we are all so very very proud of you congratulations one of my most favorite parts of this ceremony all of it is my favorite part but one of my more favorite parts is the following i get to do some shout outs so to all of those utsa staff members who organized today's event thank you so much to the musicians that are here today our mariachis los pazanos our commencement ensemble sherlin davenport utsa music is awesome and we just celebrate with music and it's wonderful to enjoy the music that you're going to hear today to our platform party here and my cabinet colleagues i want to give them a huge shout out because they have labored immensely over these last two years to help us navigate through the pandemic and they've worked very tirelessly on your behalf and i am grateful for them as colleagues and i celebrate them so folks thank you so much for what you've done for us okay we would not be here today without our faculty our faculty are the best faculty in the world they are completely dedicated to each and every one of you their work over these last two years over your career as a student with us has been really really important and so what i'd like to do graduates is give a huge shout out to our faculty faculty please rise let's give them a huge hand they are the best all right graduates i have a homework assignment for you yeah bear with me yeah this is a good one though this is like an extra a free extra credit question to all our family and friends of the graduates who are here today to support our graduates who love our graduates who work mightily to make sure this day happen all family friends and colleagues in the audience please stand graduates let's give them a huge round of applause [Applause] i am so grateful that family friends colleagues lent each of you to us for these last few years so that you could proceed on your academic trajectory and be prepared to go out and change the world so we're very very grateful to your loved ones your family members and your friends because they very generously lent you to us for this period of time so thank you family friends and colleagues okay i always enjoy doing the following shout out as well graduates if you're a first gen please stand up and be be recognized yeah what a what an amazing thing this is amazing this is so so special it is it's wonderfully special it is one of the great things of being a road runner to military affiliated or veterans if you're graduating or if you're in the audience and you've served please stand and be recognized thank you for your service thank you thank you for your service if we have any student athletes who are graduating now please rise and be recognized student athletes thank you thank you all right i'm going to save the best for last if you're graduating today please stand and be recognized i agree you know um even though we've been in the midst of this horrible pandemic it's been an exciting year to be a road runner we've gotten these amazing philanthropic gifts mackenzie scott gave us a 40 million dollar unrestricted gift and we were one of six four-year doctoral granting institutions in the united states to receive such a gift and it was about our intentionality about student success and you being here today to graduate we also have two wonderful new namings of our colleges carlos amulu alvarez gave us a very very generous gift to name the college of business and just this week we announced that margie and bill clessey are naming the college of engineering and integrated design these are things that don't happen often for universities and the fact that we've gotten two in this last year during a pandemic says a lot about where we're going as a university people believing in us as a university and people believing in you so that's a very very special thing now you you'll cut me a little bit of slack here as i talk about this next matter or two we opened our road runner athletic center of excellence facility in august right puts us in a very very good company nationally and we happen to have a football team that's going to a bowl game i believe the same as you about that if i could cheer loudly without making a scene i would have done the same finally though what's really wonderful about this whole year is you your graduation i share these points of pride because you need to understand this each and every one of you have played a critical role in where we are and where we're going as a university and we are so grateful for that remember you are graduating today but you are a road runner forever you are always always always welcome back on campus or down at the dome wherever you involve yourselves with us with our alumni association please come back to campus and see us come back and tell us what's going on we're delighted to learn about what's going on in your life we we want to stay very connected with you now you have a very important thing to do you have to go out and tackle this wonderfully complicated world that we live in find your way make your own path you've already been doing this and go out and change the world so to each and every every one of you road runners congratulations we're so proud of you now you can forgive me for doing this i have one last assignment homework assignment but it's not for you parents family friends colleagues who are here today to celebrate when your loved one comes through the magic door right here you have
