be me lover of Fujifilm cameras I sell my xt3 and buy an xt4 I love the flippy screen bigger battery and Ibis I'm excited to take photos with a new camera so I asked my friend Matty to come over for a dramatic self-portrait photo shoot we have an amazing time I import the photos into Lightroom and what the the photos look muddy for some reason I start questioning myself did I get the settings right was the subject moving too much was I using a low enough aperture to get everything in Focus do I suck salty nuts as a photographer am I overthinking this I don't generally pixel peep I watch reviews for camera brands all the time and their photos look sharp and amazing what am I doing wrong I check out some other reviews of Fujifilm gear to see if other people are having the same muddy photo issue I sometimes couldn't tell if the image was out of focus or if it was just kind of Muddy looking which was a little disappointed immediately I can tell the Fuji is not it doesn't have quite the quality that the uh Cannon and the Sony have just they just does not quite have it I want to take crispy high quality portraits so I start thinking of doing something unthinkable moving on from Fujifilm I have the Sony a74 in my cart and I'm about to click Buy on this 2 500 camera but I saw myself and decide to sleep on it before I buy it I dream a dream of capture one if you spend any time online reading blogs or YouTube comments you'll see a lot of people recommend using Capture One to process Fujifilm raw files but I like my Speedy workflow with Lightroom I don't want to switch to another program but then again I say to myself what do I have to lose let me download capture 123 trial and try it out I started up import a photo and oh my goodness in five seconds I realize I am switching to capture one there it is Clarity sharpness cleanliness it's exactly what I've been looking for with my Fujifilm photos for a long time at first I couldn't believe it so I switched back over to Lightroom and then back to capture one and yeah definitely right off the bat you can see the Capture One image is cleaner but why is the file in Capture One sharper than the one in Lightroom I'm gonna give it to you hot and raw a camera's raw file is unprocessed data captured by your camera sensor it isn't an image yet when you look at it at the back of your screen the camera is giving you a representation of what it might look like if it was a processed image file Lightroom and Capture One are raw converters they take the unprocessed raw data and turn it into an image that you can edit then you can process it however way you like and Export it as an image file like a JPEG or computers phones and even calculators can see it Lightroom and Capture One have their own separate algorithms code and processing engines for converting raw files I do tons of research and find out that Lightroom processes Fujifilm raw files in a way that can cause images to look a little less than 100 sent why is that I'm not exactly sure also it's pretty well known that when you sharpen Fujifilm raw files in Lightroom you get what a lot of people call wormy artifacts because it looks like there's a bunch of worms forming in certain parts of the image especially shadowy areas I know this is going to be tough to see with YouTube compression on videos but I'm going to flip back and forth on the same image between Lightroom and Capture One to show you the differences let's zoom into 100 and look at the hairs over here especially in the eyebrows and the eyelashes you can see a good amount of detail and hairs in this image but in the more condensed areas it kind of looks a little mushy where you can't individually pick out hairs now let's flip over to capture one and zoom into 100 you can see in this area a lot more clarity in the hairs you can see more individual strands even in the eyelashes look at the eyelashes right here if I go back to Lightroom you can see that the ends of the eyelashes are getting Dotty where you can't really make out the ends of the hairs that much but when you switch over to capture one you can clearly see the lines all the way to the end it's not getting Dotty and spotty let's go back over to Lightroom and come down here into the mustache and the beard area you can see the clarity of the hairs but when there's a lot of hairs going on especially in the shadow areas it just gets mushy over here and muddy let's go over to capture one and we look at the hairs down here you can see a lot more details and information in the shadow areas it's not getting mushy or muddy with all the strands here look at this section right here and then look over here in Lightroom there's just no Clarity and a loss of detail whereas you get all that information in capture one another thing about this is I'm showing the reset image right here and without any sharpening added you can see some rainbow artifacting which happens when you over sharpen images in Lightroom but when you flip over to capture one you don't see that you don't see any rainbow artifacting happening in the hairs they're all clear and defined and there's no extra colors getting into those hairs so even the raw images are looking mushy and muddy and the sharpening on the Lightroom side is weird even though I've added no sharpening to the image you may be saying yourself well what's the big deal no one's going to really zoom in on that anyways but the funny thing is every time I show someone a photo on my phone the first thing that they do is they start zooming in people want to see that image with the clarity and they want to zoom in and see everything especially the 9x16 ratio people got to zoom in to see stuff and that issue of the rainbow artifacts happening in the hair with the sharpening on Lightroom is only compounded when you start editing the photo here's a final edit of Mandy's dramatic portrait I've added selective sharpening to certain parts of the face now if we look at the eyebrows here you can see some colors coming in the rainbow artifacting happening when you over sharpen things although I don't feel that I've over sharpened it it's just lightroom's sharpening you can really see that effect down here in the hairs and the beard look how it's almost multi-colored happening you see different colors going on it almost looks like chromatic aberration because the sharpening is just sharpening stuff that is not really there now switch over to capture one this is the final edited photo where I've tried to match the same processing and same sharpening as closely as I can as possible in Capture One to match the Lightroom image over here the colors are a little bit off I still kind of need to learn how to use the skin tone retouching and capture one but pay attention to the sharpening in the hairs right here as you notice here in Lightroom you can see not as much detail in the rainbow artifacting happening over here now look at capture one you see way more details in the hairs and you're not seeing that random rainbow coloring happening in the eyebrows you especially see here in the beard hair all these hairs are black or white I'm not seeing any purples or greens or over sharpening artifacts that you see in in Lightroom look at here in the beard area right here all these hairs and there's some loss in detail where there's just information not there you can see a lot more hairs going on and there's no rainbow artifacting with the sharpening of the image another cool thing I found out about caption one is the Highlight recovery is smoother so back into flight room over here I had to add a whole mask just to reduce the highlights on the face right here look at these highlights happening in the middle section over here I had to reduce them down so that it's not so overpowering whereas in capture one I haven't added that layer for reducing the highlights at all this is just how the highlights look and it's just smoother you can see here the strength of the highlights in the nose right here look at these highlights here and if you zoom in it's just it's smoother it's smoother and not as pronounced in Capture One and the Highlight recovery is better on capture one with Fujifilm raw files seeing Fujifilm files in capture one with my own eyes converted me just like how Capture One beautifully converts Fujifilm files I highly recommend you at least try out capture one there's a free 30-day trial you can try it no questions asked put some of the files that you've processed in Lightroom import them into capture one and check it out and see if you see any details coming to life in capture one just like I did or keep using Lightroom if you're used to the workflow and you like the results I want my photos to look the best that they can be for myself and my work and for the people that I create photos for I want them to have the highest quality possible and that's why I'm going to be switching to capture one if you like the portrait shot that I took of my friend Mandy I made a POV GoPro video behind the scenes of me capturing the images this setup the lighting the whole process and showing you how I work so check that video out if you have the time thank you so much for watching my Awakening to using Capture One to bring out the best in my Fujifilm raw files
