comes out on top number one the Patriot is a designed by Raytheon and its name is derived from the radar used in the system the pac-3 is the latest upgrade of the Patriots can engage tactical ballistic missiles a single battery of the system consists of a radar set an engagement control station launcher station antenna mass group and Interceptor missiles themselves the radar finds and tracks targets and helps the missiles hit their targets accurately the engagement control station calculates trajectories and intercepts and controls the launch sequence the launcher stations hold and launch the missiles the antenna mask group is the main Communications backbone for the whole unit the Patriot is armed with a variety of missiles capable of destroying a variety of aerial threats while s-400 Triumph is built by Russia as an upgrade to the s-300 family it is designed to neutralize tactical and intermediate range aircraft ballistic and cruise missiles the s-400 is composed of various components that work together to achieve its Target first component is a launch vehicle which carries the missiles the second component is a command and control post mounted on the vehicle serving as the system's heart finally the system comes with a set of Radars with varied ranges to intercept targets from multiple directions at high altitudes now let's talk about the components of both systems in detail number two the Patriot is outfitted with a passive electronically scanned array radar the radar is also capable of countering any attempts to jam electronic signals Patriots radar is somewhat unusual and that is a detection to kill system which means that a single unit performs all search identification track and engagement functions whereas s 400 requires multiple Radars to perform these tasks the Patriots radar is mounted on a trailer and its antenna array consists of over 5000 elements it can track up to 100 targets within a range of 93 miles the radar emits a highly agile narrow beam which sets it apart from traditional Radars that use a moving dish this unique characteristic makes it capable of detecting small fast-moving targets such as ballistic missiles stealth aircraft and cruise missiles with low radar cross section on the other hand s 400 uses a combination of Radars with varied ranges these Radars work together seamlessly to provide the s-400 with a comprehensive view of the airspace the 96 l6e radar is particularly notable for its ability to detect and track low-flying cruise missiles and fighter jets within 186 miles the gravestone radar is another impressive sensor which can detect and track ballistic missiles and stealth aircraft within 249 miles of range while big bird of acquisition radar can locate and identify 300 targets simultaneously within a distance of 373 miles assuming that the Russia's claim is accurate s-400 radar system has far superior radar in terms of range and capabilities compared to that of the Patriot system number three the Patriot is armed with a variety of missiles each with its own ranging capability the pac-2 variant missiles can intercept and Destroy aircraft tactical ballistic and cruise missiles through a proximity fusing mechanism which means that the Warhead is detonated near the incoming missile creating a blast wave that destroys it the missile can travel at speeds over three thousand one hundred fifty miles per hour with flight altitude of 15 miles and has a range of more than 99 miles while the pac-3 missiles are optimized specifically to intercept and Destroy incoming objects through a hit to kill technology which involves physically colliding with the target to neutralize it this makes pac-3 more effective against more advanced ballistic missiles which may be equipped with decoys or other countermeasures it has a range of 37 miles and can engage incoming targets at high altitudes with speeds over 3150 miles per hour as per manufacturer both variants of the Patriot system are used in tandem to achieve a success rate of 80 to 90 percent whereas s-400 system is armed with a variety of missiles mounted on a truck for long range engagement the system is armed with 40 n6e missiles which is equipped with Active Radar homing to intercept air targets with blistering speed of 2 700 miles per hour this missile has claimed a range of 249 miles and can Target high value spy or support aircraft for medium range engagements 48 n6dm missile is used to Target within the distance of 155 miles while nm-96 missile can engage highly maneuverable fighter jets within 75 miles for shorter range engagements 9m96e is used to destroy an Airborne Target within 25 miles Russia claims that s 400 missiles can destroy its Target with 98 success rate number four the Patriots radar detects a Target and gathers information about its location speed and trajectory the radar sends data to a command center where operators assess it and decide if an approaching object is hostile once the engagement is authorized the launcher fires two missiles in a ripple 4.2 seconds apart to destroy the incoming objects on the other side the s-400 system operates by initially identifying a Target through the use of suitable Radars at hand the information is then passed to the command and control center which determines whether the target is friendly or hostile and chooses to engage the target subsequently with the assistance of the engagement radar the suitable missile is launched to neutralize the threat number five the cost of the latest Patriot air defense system can vary and depend on exact configuration and the quantity of the equipment while the exact cost is not publicly disclosed however as per the center for strategic and international studies the cost of a single battery is about 1.1 billion dollars which includes 400 million for the system and 700 million for the missiles moreover there are additional costs associated with training Logistics and maintenance similarly the price of s-400 missile system depends on the specific features and components included according to various sources the cost of a s 400 system is estimated range between 500 to 700 million dollars which includes the price of launchers missiles Associated equipment and training and maintenance the s-400 has a longer range and can take down a wider range of high value targets it also comes with a variety of missiles designed to engage different types of Airborne threats with higher degree of success rate meanwhile the Patriot system is known for being effective against tactical ballistic missiles and cruise missiles it's worth noting that the Patriot system is often used in conjunction with Aegis and thaad which can easily engage
