in this video we're gonna talk about upgrading the Palo Alto operating system now operating systems are upgraded quite frequently so you always want to make sure that you are at maybe not the latest but at least fairly close to latest so you can stay up to date with all the new features and options that are available now when we first look at our system here we can see that we are running version pick software version 9.0 6 and there have been several upgrades since that time so we want to see about upgrading it as with most things system dependent it comes up here under the device tab when we're in the device tab if we scroll down all the way down on the left-hand side we will see a setting right here called software click on that and that tells me all the software that's currently installed and available on this machine for instance it tells me right now version 9.0 1 is both downloaded and currently installed now 9.01 it came out and well March of 2019 looking at the time down here at the date down here that is well over a year ago so I probably want to upgrade it in order to do that first thing I want to do is I want to click this check Now button that will check online and download from Palo Alto the list of the latest available updates you now this process is fairly simple but is not necessarily very fast so you always want to make sure you have plenty of time to work on this there we go okay so we can see right here at the latest version is 91/2 or more specifically 9 1 2 - h1 with a release date of Wow still a little while ago but much more recent than the current version now the issue with upgrading is that I can't always upgrade from my current version up to the latest there may be intermittent steps I need to check in order to do that I can't click on the release notes over here to be able to read what the various status of this one particular update is and it will tell me about any known issues as well as what the upgrade process is like now because I don't necessarily want to upgrade to the latest one I may actually choose let's see I'm currently 901 I let's say I want to go up to 902 it's an incremental step I've read the release notes I know what issues there are and I know it's gonna work for my environment so I'm going to go ahead and just click the download button and so it downloads the version 902 operating system down to the machine and registers it registers prepares it into the software manager this takes a couple of minutes and I have to wait until it's done before I can continue on speaking of waiting till things are done or while we're waiting for this normally you will want to do this during off hours and like I said definitely make sure that you have read through the release notes so you know any possible issues that might occur as well as so you can perform these tasks during non-business hours so you don't necessarily impact the rest of the world or rest of your organization with your changes now that is downloaded I'm just gonna go ahead and click install here it starts with the active install it prepares everything and then will prompt me to reboot in most business environments it's oftentimes suggested up to Palo Alto's in a parallel configuration that way you can actually take one of them offline make it in a standby system and then you can upgrade the standby machine make sure that everything works as far as the upgrade process before then swapping the active standby rolls and then you can then upgrade the other system when that's entirely done a great way to be able to make sure that the configurations are working before you commit your full environment speaking of which I forgot one thing I should have included I should have actually backed up my configuration before this all started you you and there we go so this device will be rebooted for the new software do you want to reboot now and you say yes it will go ahead and reboot this process will take several minutes again before it comes back online and then when it's done it will be at the newer version now like I said not every version can go up to every other version so we went from say what from 901 right now to 902 at that point I may go to 903 and then 904 afterwards incrementally making the steps through to make sure that there's no unnecessary issues as I tried to go to the end
