today we are exploring the Windows 7 registry what it is how it's organized and what you can do with it the Windows registry is a hierarchical database that stores configuration settings for all aspects of Windows 7 including Hardware software and user preferences it is a crucial part of Windows and it is used to store information about everything from your user profile to your Hardware configuration the registry is organized into a tree likee structure that is divided into five hives Each of which stores a different type of information the hives are hkey classes rout which stores information about file types and extensions hkey current user which stores information about the current user such as their desktop settings and preferences hkey local machine which stores information about the computer itself such as its Hardware configuration and installed applications hkey users which stores information about all users of the computer and HQ current config which stores information about the current Hardware configuration of the computer the registry is made up of a variety of different data types including strings numbers and binary values each data type has a specific meaning and the values stored in the registry can be used to control a wide range of Windows 7 settings what are the risks of editing the registry the registry is a powerful tool but it can be dangerous to edit if you make a mistake you could damage your Windows installation or even make your computer unusable therefore it is important to only edit the registry if you know what you're doing always back up the registry before making any changes this will allow you to restore the registry to to its original state if something goes wrong how to access the registry editor four methods from the start menu click the start button in the start search type reg edit and press enter when prompted click yes to allow the registry Editor to make changes to your computer from the Run dialogue delete the entries for the programs you want to disable add open with notepad to the context menu in file explorer notepad is a simple but versatile text editor that can be used to open and edit a wide variety of file types if you frequently open different types of files in notepad adding it to the context menu can save you time and effort it can be faster and more convenient to rightclick on the file and select open with notepad then to open notepad and navigate to the file from there to do this navigate to the hkey classes root Aster Shell Key rightclick on the Shell Key and select new followed by key name the new key edit right click on the edit key and select new string value name name the new string value Command right click on the command string value and select edit set its
