Understanding Maynard James Keenan

Maynard James Keenan is first of all known for being the lead singer and songwriter a bands like tool a perfect circle and possa fur but he's also a great example of a modern day renaissance man he's a rock star record producer author winemaker and actor in addition to being a rock star I am also a licensed pet psychic as of now he lives a reclusive life in Arizona but who is he really let's take a closer look Maynard was born James Herbert Keenan on the 17th of April in 1964 he grew up in a Salim Baptist family in Ravenna Ohio as the only child of his mother Judith Murray and father Michael Lauryn Keenan when James was four his parents decided to separate his father moved to Scottsville Michigan and didn't visit his son more than about once a year during the rest of his childhood not only their relationship with his father took a distance he also distanced himself from his Christian background as they experienced hypocrisy in the religious role models around him at that time as Maynard stated in an interview from 2001 I witnessed firsthand the hypocrisy of this particular form of Christianity but it was a gradual thing as I got older I began to see people claiming one set of beliefs and acting in ways which directly opposed these views now main arts mothers are from a paralyzing cerebral aneurysm in 1976 an event that later inspired him to write songs like Jimmy wings for Murray and Judith Judith Murray she passed away several years ago she was men valid for almost 30 years she had an aneurysm when she was about 31 I left her paralyzed on the right side of her body and so she couldn't really do a lot of traveling couldn't do much of anything really I read write speak walk tell time you know having to live roughly 29 years in that state Judith persuaded Keenan to live with his father in Scottsville something he recalls as one of the best choices he ever made in 1982 he graduated from Mason County Central High School in Scottsville and while studying there he took part in the school's wrestling team where his father was the coach according to Maine art his father was also his teacher in biology now in 1981 Maynard saw the comedy film stripes starring Bill Murray it was a movie that inspired him to join the u.s. army with the intention of having the GI Bill fund his dream of attending art school but this wasn't just a transitional phase in his life as Maine art stated in an interview the army taught me discipline and accountability I would come to understand that these qualities were just as important as my pen and paper but the tough military training wasn't the only thing that strengthened his discipline Maine art was always active in many different arenas he wrestled ran on the cross-country team and sang in a glee club in 1988 he relocated to Los Angeles where his love for animals led him to work in a pet store it was during this time that he started getting more serious about music his earliest involvement with bands was during the 80s where he played bass for the Texans and sang for children of the anachronistic dynasty he also performed and recorded music with green jello in the early 90s but his tipping point into music happened when he met Adam Jones who had heard Maynard sing on a demo tape during college he quickly suggested that they form a band together and although reluctant at first Maynard eventually agreed to form the band tool in 1990 [Music] fronted by Kenan the eventual lineup including guitarist Jones his neighbor drummer Danny Kerry and bassist Paul d'amour who was later replaced by Justin Chancellor the band experienced major success from their first record onwards after releasing undertow in 93 and Anna my 96 tool began a prolonged legal battle with her label volcano Records over contract violations this resulted in a new record deal and because of this the band decided to take a break this break didn't stop Maine arts creative spirit though he decided to use his opportunity to create a different project with his bands guitar tech Billy Howard L and that's how a perfect circle was born in total they released three massively successful albums so far in addition to a live DVD and CD set [Applause] in spite of their successes the band came to a break in 2006 when main art stated real problem would running to land a perfect circle at the same time was that they both operates the same way they're both live touring bands with labels still working under the old contract mentality so I thought it was time to let a perfect circle go for now and let Billy explore himself it's tough for a guy who went from being a guitar tack for tool to being in a band with a pretentious famous singer and having to live in that shadow but a perfect circle wasn't the only musical leg that Maynard had to stand on at this point back in 2003 he surfaced under the name poza Ferg for the song Rev 20 to 20 which was featured in the soundtrack in the film underworld confession Danny Lohner previously a part of Nine Inch Nails live act was the originator of this project but the baton was mainly driven by main art from the point when he joined he has described the project as a premier improvised a tional hardcore band a place for him to write music that inspires people more intuitive music that didn't involve too much critical thinking main our personally financed and released their first studio album V is for vagina back in 2007 an album that was recorded in a tour bus several hotel rooms and various studios around the US while main art simultaneously worked with tool the album is cited by critics and collaborators as a 180 turn for him compared to what he would do with tool and a perfect circle at leasts musically but maybe not lyrically Maynard has several times stated that the main purpose of his lyrics is to simply connect with listeners on a personal level and hopefully encourage them to look inward for self reflection and self identity over the years he's been somewhat hesitant to releasing his lyrics as he thought people simply wouldn't get what he sang about however after each release now speaking in terms of tool Keenan eventually published his lyrics online via the semi official fansite with the exception of lateralis which was published on the official tool website now some of main arts lyrical arrangements have been noted for their complexity and their innate intentions for example the lyrics on lateralis we're in the number of syllables per line correspond with the arrangement of the Fibonacci numbers you can find a whole video dissecting that topic alone by clicking in the top right corner right here the creativity in his lyrics is only one part of the cake though how he appears on stage is another part while performing with tool he has included the mohawk hairstyle wigs kabuki masks bras Heights and one time he even painted his entire body with blue paint this is contrasted with a variety of long-haired wigs that he would usually use while performing with the perfect circle now by taking a deep dive into his story you can clearly see that his creativity leaks into other arts as well in addition to his main career as a musician he dipped his feet into acting and comedy first of all he was featured in several sketches on the American sketch comedy series mr. show with Bob and David yeah beautifully I'm playing that he knows it you're guilty you don't know who's really in jail he also appeared as Satan in the 2002 film bikini bandits and it's 2004 sequel thank you for joining me filmmakers Ryan Paige and Christopher Palmer ranked and aims of capturing Keenan's journey into winemaking the story of how he got interested in wine stars when he worked in Boston at the pet store I talked about earlier a friend of his worked in an Italian wine shop and they would occasionally get together and have barbecues and he would bring wines over as Maine are mentioned in a video he did with Gary Vaynerchuk at the time I had no frame of reference interesting in the way that I could tell that there was something to it and ever since he came to Arizona the rest was history this is the southwest of Sedona where he lives in 2003 at age 59 Mainers mother died of an aneurysm following her death he scattered her ashes across one of his wine yards and later named one of his wines after her but again Maynard is not only passionate about wine music and filmmaking is also investing some time in building and maintaining a greenhouse for vegetables now you may think hold on here this dude is doing so many contrary things he's a rock star and actor winemaker he's a doomsday prepper is it even possible to balance those things out well according to author Maynard James Keenan it's highly possible to create a perfect union of contrary things because of this belief he's also started his own gym where he's often practicing the martial art of jiu-jitsu it seems like he's able to balance all these things because he simply done them for so long so there's a refined process to everything that this guy is doing take his band tool for example main ours only role in that band is to write the lyrics and find a way to perform them he gets started on this process only when all the other members of the band feel like their part is finished and by doing so he is very efficient in what he's doing main art is a great example of in modern-day Renaissance men doing everything from creating rock music to making wine if there's one thing I hope you take away from this video is the
