hey everybody its Andrew again your average jeweler today we're talking colored stones specifically colored stones that don't get the credit they really should these are awesome gemstones some of my favorite colored stones are on this list and yet some people haven't even heard of them or maybe if you've heard of them you didn't get all the information let's get into it so right out of the gate I want to say these are not necessarily five gemstones that are more rare than any other gemstone and I'm not gonna say that they're the best five gemstones but these are five stones that don't get enough credit based on how many fantastic attributes they have and as I mentioned before whether it's because people haven't heard of them or they hear the name of them and that they assume certain things and there are misconcept misconceptions that revolve around them whatever it is I want to talk about these five colored stones today because I get really excited about them but I find many others don't so getting right into things I want to talk about zircon not cubic zirconia that's the first thing that always seems to come up with this gemstone it's a beautiful stone in its own right but zircon is not cubic zirconia cubic zirconia a common diamond simulant is primarily a lab-created mineral it's not typically naturally occurring and it's not going to be something you usually see by itself as a natural rare gemstone but as soon as you say the word zircon people make this assumption and think that it's some kind of lab created man-made stone it's not it's a beautiful gemstone and it has some very neat characteristics not the least of which is it has an incredibly high refractive index what does that mean it means it's going to be very sparkly we often describe zircon as being one of the most lively gemstone around when compared to diamond in fact zircon often shows off more of what we consider scintillation and that's the little flashes of light going on within the stone it's such a beautiful stone if you haven't looked at it recently go find something number two shouldn't be new to anyone and if you've watched some of my other videos specifically birthstone videos you've heard me talk about it and some of the things that make this a very interesting and neat gemstone and that's sapphire sapphires are durable they're tough they don't scratch as much as other stones and along with that they come in a rainbow of colors one of the things that keeps a fire from getting the total recognition I think it deserves is the fact that it comes in so many different colors a lot of people here sapphire and they just think blue it comes in Purple's it comes in oranges it even comes in greens pinks it's all over the place not to mention some of the phenomenal characteristics like star sapphire it makes sapphire such an awesome gemstone you combine that with its practical characteristics and it's one of my favorites I wanted to take a moment and talk about a picture I put up on Instagram this past week under your average jeweler if you're not following me over there you can head on that direction but it was a picture of all sapphires except for one stone now that one stone is a stone we're gonna talk about in a little bit but I asked the question does anyone have any guesses to which one is not the sapphire and I'm telling you right now even to the trained eye it's not an easy test so if you tried and didn't quite get it don't feel bad but we are going to talk about that one exception here soon number three on this list is a stone that's actually not so obscure in the locality I'm in and that's in Maine it's tourmaline tourmaline is the Maine State gemstone and we actually have been fortunate to find quite a bit of it here in the state which is amazing for a u.s. mined gems it's certainly one of the best gemstones we have and I'm gonna talk about some of the things that make it so fantastic this is another one if you haven't heard of it or seen it you need to go find some and while we are very fortunate being in Maine where we can have a nice selection I recognize that in some locations you're not likely to find a huge selection of this particular stone but it comes in a rainbow of colors just like sapphire it's most well known for its greens and its pinks which cover a wide range of different saturations and hues but overall you're going to find some beautifully rich greens you're gonna find some more blueish greens some yellow greens in the pinks you can get them very hot pink - more pastel you can find this stone in rich Reds they find it in beautiful blue hues a region in Brazil Paraiba is known for some neon blue colors and you add to all this it's phenomenal characteristics where you find it in bicolor stones where there's more than one color that grow as the stone grows and you have what they often call watermelon tourmaline where one crystal is enveloped by another crystal of a different color and you have a unique phenomenon in that all in all this is an awesome gemstone worth being many people's favorite gemstone and yet again not getting the credit it often deserves as you might have guessed these are stones that I didn't necessarily know about before I really got into colored gemstones and for many of you I assume it might be the same case as you find out more and more about some of these typically obscure gemstones you may find that some of them end up becoming your favorites but let me know in the comments section below which of these stones surprised you the most or which of them do you find to be just an awesome gem stone that could potentially turn out to be one of your favorites number four on this list is one that I alluded to in my Instagram it's the stone that sneaks in there and blends in with different colored sapphires and that is spinel another stone that if you watch some births videos in the past you'll find out some characteristics about spinel it's a stone that's been in the shadow of rubies and sapphires for history and that's for the very simple reason that they didn't know how to distinguish them as a different mineral from that of corundum which is your sapphires and rubies they grow in the same regions they look very similar in crystal form and they grow in the same colors so of course it's going to get mixed up when you don't have the scientific ability to figure out which one is which now we know it's a completely different mineral and because it was in the shadow of these other stones for so long many people aren't aware of it it comes in all of those different colors that you would expect comes in those reds and blues and pinks it's a beautiful stone and many times it's even more affordable than that of sapphire now I would give sapphire the slight edge when it comes to durability the truth is though spinel is an awesome gemstone that you need to go find and see for yourself if you've been coming to my channel for a while thank you so much for coming please continue to learn with me I have so much I want to teach you so many things that get me excited about the world of jewelry if you haven't subscribed yet click the link below hit the little bell icon so that you can get notifications you find out when things are coming but I'm glad you're here and I hope you keep learning with me the last gemstone on this list garnet you may be thinking to yourself I know all about garnet it's a birthstone it's a pretty common gemstone I've seen it before why is it on this list just like sapphire garnet has become associated with a specific color in most cases and that is this kind of orange e rusty red color garnet is not just this orange e red color it has a rainbow of colors as well many of them incredibly vibrant you have very bright greens you have these beautiful oranges that can be incredibly attractive and then you get into the Reds and the Pink's that don't have that orange overtone that it's known for why is it known for that one color well that is the most common color and it's obviously going to be more affordable because of that and more people have seen it because of that so when it comes to garnets it's not that someone is trying to squelch that gemstone or any of these others for that matter it's just the varieties that tend to be more vibrant and more people would want tend to be that much more rare and so it's not as easily marketable but you go in and you find varieties like tsavorite garnet which is one of those vibrant green colors and it is one of my favorite gemstones along with the sapphire family but for a specific gemstone of one color tsavorite garnet is one of my absolute favorites garnet is also a pretty durable stone it can be worn in rings although usually I want diamonds and sapphires to be in everyday rings but the whole premise of this is there are a lot of gemstones out there that have been put into a box of what they are and people don't understand the scope of how much more there is to any one gemstone whether it's a practical characteristic or whether it's just another color that people didn't understand it grew in garnet is also one of those stones that is rarely treated most gemstones goes through some kind of a treatment so that there's enough of it to sell sapphires is a perfect example if it wasn't for heat treatment only the richest of the rich would have pretty sapphires with garnets however there are different in that they're almost always found naturally in these bright vivid colors that we see them in it all builds a case for an incredible stone that's been put in a small box I really hope you've learned something today I hope you've learned something from my other videos if you haven't checked them out please go look at them I think there's a lot of information that gets misconstrued and people are confused about because they only get part of the story I want to fill in some of those gaps it's important to me that people have the ability to get the answers they want or maybe even need at times ultimately I like learning I hope you enjoy learning I think that's why a lot of us are here please stay with me stay tuned remember the question below what stone surprised you or which of these could you see being one of your favorite stones and if you haven't subscribed click the subscribe button so that we can
