no let's go over the bridge we're going over the bridge it's a part of the underground railroad come up on me come can you imagine yourself on the underground railroad i can't either girl because you'd be doing everything we were trying to run away you'd be doing everything i'm like come on it's the way the freedom you'll be like no mommy let's go over there oh look at you big girl on the underground railroad oh big girl on the underground railroad hi everyone i wanted to show you another small chapter in our underground railroad series something really unexpected happened so i'm just going to show you all and let you make comments below harriet tubman was born in dorchester county maryland which is home to blackwater national wildlife refuge meaning the landscape out there now is virtually the same as it was in the 19th century it's very marshy and you can't get a sell signal most of the time so finding each site was really difficult and we got lost several times before i found a signal and downloaded the audio guide not once does this map show a sharp left turn not once not once so we're here in dorchester county it says at that time there are about eight thousand black people about half of whom were slaves so as i stand here what i'm thinking about is that like most slave holders in maryland the broduces weren't multi-millionaires he didn't have work to sustain slaves for the entire year so what they would do is they would rent slaves out for certain parts of the year so harriet tubman and her family her brothers and sisters would often be sold to or temporarily sold or loaned out to nearby farmers to use for to work their land so as you can imagine that's something that was emotionally taxing on her so i'm standing here at the bucktown village store this is a site that has actually been restored to its almost original condition but at the time it was one of just two general stores in this entire area this store was actually the site of a major event in harriet tubman's life she was sent here along with the cook to pick up some supplies at the same time a slave nearby had run away from his enslaver and someone had come to retrieve him the overseer had to come to retrieve him the overseer commanded harriet to help hold him down but harriet refused at that time the other the slave other slave ran from the store out here and how far yeah what do you mean railroad there are i think this is all i'm not sure exactly which site i think these are all considered underground yes yeah i don't did you get pick up this book right right it's not right exactly did you so this was from the um that visitor center at the harriet tubman place um and so it's uh it's pretty nice in there i mean it just tells everything about harry tubman's life this book was two dollars if i had another one i would give it to you but um it tells exactly where each site is and what it's important for oh wow right so like this is the site where she when she i mean i don't know if you know already so i might be telling you but it says that here when she was um rented out to another slave owner um a slave was basically trying to escape from here um and someone was trying to get that slave back through like a two pound weight at his head but she jumped in the way and it hit her instead and so that's how she got like that gas show on her forehead that yeah so and they said this is the actual store that's been restored but you know still standing so yeah so maybe one of these other sites will have another one of these but i'm not sure if any i think maybe further up north we'll get to the sites that she actually used to hide people right okay so one of the safe houses is coming up number 22. thank you yeah you're welcome i think we're gonna go this way so the people who are back there are now here have caught up with us they asked me do i know which way the underground work is under the swamps i saw no why would i say that because they've been silly no they're not don't you no they're not no they're being silly they came from the center i'm assuming and then now they want to say where's the underground whoa whoa [Music] is from mississippi i'm from baltimore p i don't have an accent so you guys are telling me you y'all all one click i'm saying that i can't look at someone or listen to them in nowhere in the wide united states they're from i can tell you that they're african-american what is this thing do you know this cross sleep this is like one of the last stops it's funny because when i came into this town i was like oh it feels blackish and it is blackish let's look around so i guess they still have this they still have services in this church i'm about to go and um a lot of the early residents the black residents are buried here so this town was i'm not sure if i said earlier but this town was actually found founded by a free black man you
