hey everyone it's been about one month we're coming back to see what's happened with this flooded road stupid grouse bird right there okay now the park rangers said that the beavers they were going to relocate and i can see there is some high water that means the beavers did build it back you can see all this erosion damage i don't know if they're building it back from what i destroyed or the park rangers have done it since then but i'm assuming it just took this long for the beavers to build it back because i even destroyed their stone foundation last time so we're gonna pull over and we're gonna unclog these culverts again and also get a time lapse video of the swamp draining and you can see a lot because all the leaves in the swamp have dropped because we're getting into the middle of october now and you can see those flags there i'm the one who put those flags up on top of the culverts we're gonna get out and unclog these water's not quite as deep as last time about a foot lower last time we dropped back about four feet uh by what i can see we're going to drop back about three feet this time that means they did not relocate the beavers yet perk rangers told me that they put a work order in back in may and they still have yet to do it but they should do it before winter because it'll destroy the road with frost heaves and the spring thaw will wash out the road if these culverts are unable to operate let's get out and see what's happening all right everyone we stepped out of the vehicle we are gonna have a time-lapse camera on top of here going and actually you see this here excavator marks that means since i unclogged it they jammed it again they came in here with an excavator to unclog it that's what these tracks are yes they did undo it since try to find is there evidence that they actually went down yes there is look at us they definitely brought the excavator right down inside here because you can see that stump that the beaver was hiding out there last time is kind of crushed okay so we're gonna drain back this entire swamp we're gonna have a time lapse camera up top going and what do we have inside to deal with oh that's not even as bad as last time we'll get that done in about half an hour 40 minutes maybe last time was a really big one it took about an hour before that it took only like 20 minutes and yeah we'll drop back this whole swamp with a time-lapse camera and i'll get some footage of me doing that inside hope everyone enjoys and i hope everyone understands there's a reason this has to be done we're not an enemy of the beavers beavers are very beneficial animals but if this isn't done it's going to wash out the road back to saw the erosion during the spring thaw when this thing has to rage if those aren't open it will wash out the entire road and imagine what kind of environmental impact that'll have instead of just a small impact of just draining a swamp the beavers have to be relocated and they have not had the trapper come out by the looks of it yet alrighty everybody we're about to climb into the culvert i bet it's going to be cold this will be the last time that i will be touching this culvert this year not because it's undoable or not doable but because it will harm the beavers if you drop it back when there's actually ice on the thing even though that would be cool watching the ice crack as the water drops it's not right to torture the beavers like that unless we know the trappers have actually done something and you can see fresh material they are definitely still active at the site stepping down into the water i bet the water is going to be very cold for some winter unclogging so i'm going to have to buy some insulated gloves let's get this thing moving it's not as bad as last time it'll be going fast look how fresh this is beavers just chewed that let's get this thing apart today is about 42 degrees to this area a lot colder than last time we did it once it was like 90 degrees definitely they did this with an excavator recently because this is not a lot of material definitely not a lot i'm breaking down the back side then we'll start on the side so we can watch it all wash out at once at least that's what i'm trying to do oh this is fun this time this one's pulling apart so easy last time was not nice they put pricker bushes in here all kinds of stuff look how beautifully chewed this piece is all stripped of bark oh the dam is starting to fail as i compromise it we're failing already look at that i'm compromising the backside water is cold [Music] so so beavers are definitely running out of material i spent a lot of time good this water is so cold there we go so so so now the tree stump so so so here we go here we go there we go that was awesome gold dam is gone all at once the whole damn just released at once that was awesome only took 14 minutes because the dam was not as old i wouldn't be surprised if the guys at the excavators came here just a week ago and that's what they built since a week ago so i'm telling you these tracks up here have not been rained on or very little but we're dropping back really fast right now as soon as this drops back i will clean up the bottom but there's too much current at the immediate moment my fingers were really cold at first but now that i got working my body the blood's pumping fast i'm not cold anymore i'm generating a lot of heat swamp is dropping back pretty fast i'm going to take off my gloves and i'll show you guys some things in the swamp the swamp has already dropped back almost two feet and i've been doing this for 14 minutes but i'd say the majority of this dropped back in the past five since the whole damn just went out that was awesome i compromised the sides and it just took off all at once totally awesome all righty we're on top you see all these piles these are dams look at this see down there down here down here down here down here down here way down there between me and the guys with the excavators we took out this dam probably a dozen times this year personally myself this is the fourth time and right here i got a second time lapse camera running to get the whole swamp right there now look over here see everything's dropping back now i want to show everyone something pretty cool the beavers get smarter and smarter you got to check out what they did this time all right you saw how i was getting rid of this blockage here right when this drops back it's already dropped back a bunch i'm going to get that little bit of stuff out the bottom you want to destroy the beavers foundation so they can't put it back as fast now look in this side right here the guy with the excavator must have done this because the beavers are getting smart it's now out of reach of the excavator isn't that cool it's now being built inside the beavers know they can't build it in here oh wow look what the beavers did in this one look at the backside how reinforced it is oh my gosh a beaver dam i tell you guys that looks like a baby lodge starting i think they're starting a lodge inside here they might finally be getting fed up with their damn being destroyed and that was the park rangers goal they said they said if we keep getting rid of this thing there's a chance they'll give up but honestly if you want a beaver to completely give up you got to be removing their dam every single day because if you wait a week or so the beavers are just gonna forget and they're gonna think just a natural cause did that but this seriously guys that looks like they're building a lodge in here see it's a big mound packed with dirt see that tony they're building a little lodge in here when the water comes down we'll come in the other side to take a look at that there's always a reason i unclog these beaver dams from the inside of the pipe because once you get the current going a beaver is not going to be able to get up that fast current and you'll see them coming at you in the pond last time we were here when we explored the swamp whoever saw the beaver that actually chased me in the same swamp that is the reason that i've always known don't do it in that side because sometimes they'll come after you that was the first time in my experience that ever actually happened look at us we're dropping back quite a bit now less than 10 minutes later take a look at this it's already time we can start i'm doing this again there's barely anything here i just want to get rid of their foundation most of the foundation actually went with the dam they put a bunch of rocks here because they need something that the dam can grip on to inside the smooth pipe and when we do take out one of these beaver dams we always leave a little bit of of a riverbed going into it so the river can't dig underneath it [Applause] man these beavers put this thing in really good oh man some of these things here are anchored pretty well because they beavers are just going to keep building their dam better and better the longer humans intervene because you're making them smarter well not necessarily smarter but they're going to try different building techniques to try to get their damn not washed out so a lot of the times they probably don't even realize a person's doing this they probably think it's natural causes it's amazing how they're able to like stab some of these anchors we're gonna see that thing it was in the ground they were able to get that thing out of there it looks like whoever was the guy with the excavator here didn't have his culvert training you know why you know why i'm saying that every time i've unclogged this before i always mention how i purposely leave some here right there's barely any buffer here now because the guy with the excavator came in here he just scraped all the way down the riverbed look at this is this going underneath the pipe i believe there might actually be water going underneath the pipe here from the guy with the excavator digging i believe that's what i might be seeing here my hand can definitely go underneath the culvert not exactly sure but the guy with the excavator may have compromised us let's hope not we're gonna take this big rock take some of these rocks and try to plug it where i think it's eroding rocks feel like nothing in this current you can move a big rock like it's nothing with all that current oh we just lost one took it away and you can see the guy with the excavator he exposed a lot of the bottom of the pipe it looks like there is a little bit of stuff there the guy may have caused damage to the pipe and i just put a few rocks there hopefully silt will fill it in i can't actually tell if it's moving or not probably not if it just happened a week ago probably didn't erode very bad and hopefully that'll stop it from getting any worse all right the swamp is dropping back almost as far as it will all right we're gonna walk through the other side now there's now not enough current to take me away [Music] and you remember last time i was here even the first time i came to these culverts the water on the other side was falling but now that there's so much debris here i wouldn't be surprised if the beavers tried daming it on this side oh my gosh look at this the guy with the excavator even came in this side look at that that's fresh has it barely any surface rust on that fresh metal the guy with the excavator recently just came in here and no matter who's driving it it's kind of hard to destroy a culvert this big but it's pretty easy to undermine it and that oh it shows the guy with the excavator came in on this side oh that's where he came down you see all the trees how they're all smashed the guy with the exhibit came down on this side yep he did trying to get out to this rock not right there but you can see they cleared a little bit over here they definitely brought an excavator down that's why all that debris is smashed brought the excavator right down here into the river now let's see what we have here is this a beaver lodge or just a pile of debris left by the excavator hard to tell that might be an entrance for a beaver see it right there the beavers definitely know something's going on with all this turbulence ah got the damn right this is kind of unusual usually the lodge would be on the other side but you know what this might be a sign of might be a sign they're making that their secondary pond which we just drained and they might be trying to make another dam here and i would because i other other than that i don't see why they would brought the excavator down unless they started building one across the river i do believe this is a lodge because you see right here there's a good area to get up inside that yes there is believe that's a lodge being built in here could even see some marks there that may have been from the excavator like on the other side yep all right let's get out of here oh my gosh since the first time we did this the whole bottom has silted up on this side from all the debris i'm walking in thick mud it wasn't like this the first time we came out here we're back up to the roadway it's been another 10 minutes you see they definitely had an excavator right on top of here they may have just parked here and reached down inside there because if you have a big excavator with a big boom before the joint it'll reach right in there but it does also look like something may have drove down here too over there something certainly drove in where you see all those marks where it's all smashed but look at us the whole swamp is draining back once again down here is all cleaned up and we'll most certainly check in on this in the spring because i do not have high hopes that they're even going to do anything or be capable of doing anything because how are they supposed to know when the beavers are done and what stops another beaver from just moving in it's prime real estate all right we're gonna go check out the damage okay further down the road today water was not going across because by the evidence provided i think a guy with an excavator has cleared it about one week ago before it was flowing across the street here and that puddle here that puddle was even with the water in there that's the water table that was not going away now now it will go away this is where the water was going and it would go through here and get back to the river looks like the guy with the excavator even took a poo all right going across the street this is also part of the beaver dam going all the way down to the culvert see this the beavers noticed it was spilling across the road so they started building a dam all along it look at that isn't that pretty cool how they just shave it right off like that interesting they didn't shave it off like that just for their damn they shaved it off because they were eating it at the same time that's their main food source bark all right now we're going to look around inside the swamp for a few minutes see it's all draining back you see until all these little pools drain back see this look at this right here look at that imagine the teeth on these things this right here cut within the past few days imagine the teeth on that thing to be able to shave off a piece that big at once look at this they cut down all these trees around here they're cutting down so many trees to keep building that dam back we're going to go over here and follow this water also this beaver dam one other thing it's doing it's blocking way of fish see all the little fish swimming underneath the log right there that's probably the one thing beavers do that actually hurts the environment beavers are very beneficial to their environment other than hurting human things but that doesn't count hurting human things that's about the only bad thing they actually do in their environment is block way a fish because usually they don't have a big discharge on their dam where that fish could swim up sometimes they do but usually they don't it's just trickling like down here you saw how it was trickling through everything yeah look at this there was a foot of water where i'm standing right now just a little while ago over here was approximately three three and a half feet deep you see all the silt left behind oh it smells because it's getting late in the season all the bacteria and biological cycles dying off so it smells a lot worse now if you guys remember from last time their lodge is up here to the left that little stream not the bigger area right there to the left went in there to film it saw two little beavers come out of it leaving then a big beaver scared the heck out of me so i did some loud screams trying to get it to go away but i got out of there because you do not want to get bit by a beaver they have been known to kill people and i've known that for a long time but that was the first time i've ever seen any beaver show aggression so i guess it was a good thing all this time that i've been being cautious and not standing in the pond while unclogging it i'm usually slightly behind it and what is this look at these trees see that what do you think that is would be a smart move of the loggers if they tried to make like some kind of barricade here and let the beavers flood it back here but you know beaver's not gonna do that they'll probably make a dam where you want them to but they'll also make one down there too just take a look at this this is where they got the materials to build all that we were here a month ago all these trees had leaves now that the forest is open look how many trees these things actually cut down look at this very fresh that's like a week old maybe only a few days this one right here is about a month old this one right here is about a week old this one right here just over a week these ones right here in the past few weeks look at this all the stuff being cut down must have just been done to fix their dam you can see over here see all the trees just try to grow right back you see there's a bunch of cut ones and you can see it like this one here probably cut a bunch of times it keeps growing back beavers have been here for a while but they just recently became a nuisance you see how this is this was underwater not today but the last time we came here this was all underwater you can see and they're drowning the forest out slowly making a wetland which usually would be very beneficial for the environment but if it pushes the road out then you have what you call an environmental impact so it's better just to not let the beavers do this we're going to take one more look at the street and we're going to call it a day thing here see these two trees that are cabled up there this piece right here also has a cable on it this long piece here also has a cable on the end of it so what were they trying to build right here we're trying to build a dam of some sort what do you guys think the beavers definitely gave up on this tree a while back see that's about a couple years worth of growth probably two years of growth i'd say up there look at all the mushrooms looking good look at this as it drains back all these little pools it's eroding all this silt that it left behind look at this it's making little deltas or sandbars whatever you want to call it you see you can see the sands moving and it's building a little sandbar and over here it's also building a little sandbar we'll drop it back nicely another month we'll have snow on the ground this area averages about eight inches of snow in the month of october it's yet to happen yet has yet to happen definitely in the next 30 days there'll be snow here last night was actually a pretty nice night of 40 degrees fahrenheit the night before was about no i should say tonight's going to be a widespread frost so around the 32 33 mark and over here we drop back nicely rivers back as much as it's going to be back there you saw that trickling water i do not believe that's going to stop i believe that's a small stream entering here at this point and the beavers will be right on scene as soon as i leave i bet they're watching me but they're fast builders what you saw today by the evidence of the excavator marks not having been rained on other debris the way it's broken those fresh scrape marks of the excavator bucket i estimate this was about one weeks of building one week of building they put this up that's why i was able to remove it so fast when we were here three weeks or a month ago removing this last time they had about a month to build that that's why the dam was so strong it took me nearly an hour to remove it time before that it was about 20 minutes a little bit worse than this but not that bad and the first time i did it we only chipped away for 10 minutes just to get it off the road the goal in that video wasn't to remove the entire dam until we actually talked to the park rangers knowing they wanted it completely gone but once we got the go ahead we removed it completely the next time first time we only chipped down like a foot to get it off the road we're back nearly eight hours later and no progress has been done on the culvert one bit here it is the entrance of the culvert that's because we removed the foundation making it very difficult for them to build back i remember two removals ago we actually left the rock foundation we just removed the stick material and within three hours they almost had it a foot tall they do it quite fast now looking around their little swamp not sure if you can see this in the mud see a bunch of little footprints everywhere i don't think any of them are beaver i think a lot of the little footprints i'm seeing are birds walking around pecking things out of the mud it's still pretty cool to be back here at night beavers are most active at night so i'm sure they're going to start construction tonight and i'm sure the guy with the excavator will be back again to do it uh uh there must be a beaver in this culvert i hear something we gotta go look in the big culvert all righty we got to get back over to this culvert there's a beaver in here i heard it moving stuff it can't get us up here if we look down let's look inside beaver whoa that scared me for a moment it's a spider friend see the spider friends there they are a few spiders startled me for a second didn't expect him on the ceiling so where are you beavers i know i heard one of you cause remember i believe that's a lodge over there a little peek in the other side see if we have any activity no one of them's in there i heard it with their sticks beaver that got out of there fast oh here's the beaver there's the beaver i knew i heard one of them here comes towards me here it comes beaver hello enough of that waiting for me to go away doesn't know what i am fever oh we're gonna have to call that a night they've not put i don't think they put anything back is this no that must have been there then again maybe it wasn't how did they anchor it in the oh maybe they that looks pretty fresh but then i don't know it's amazing how they're able to anchor it so deep in the ground like that for a foundation i just went in there to get my boots clean we'll have more fun with them some other day most likely not this year all right everyone hope this video was interesting thanks for watching [Music] you
