hey guys middle jesus here and today i'm going to share with you some of the updates and modifications i have done to my japanese orange spice game cube lately i've been in the mood to play some gamecube games and it just seemed like the perfect time to kind of update this one here i love this console and so i've got some new accessories for it also i am going to show you how i'm upscaling and basically improving some of the visuals and this one here also has an sd mod in it so let's get started the first thing i want to do with this one is get a matching game boy player for the bottom it seems kind of silly but you know i do like the fact that there is an orange game boy player adapter uh that you can get for this and so actually i reached out to my buddy jesse he happened to have one and so we did a trade and so that was one of them that was like okay this is how it should look and then after i did that i was like well you know i've got to find an orange gamecube controller as well and thankfully jesse came through for that as well so thank you very much jesse for the trade having an orange gamecube controller with my console it just feels right but then something happened a while ago and that is i lost my game boy player startup disc now the crazy thing if you don't know is that to get a replacement for one of these just the disc alone can be like a hundred dollars or more online they can be very expensive very collectible actually the hardware itself isn't what's what's expensive it's this little disk and so it sent me down the path of going okay i need to have a backup plan here now i eventually did find it it took me months to do it but it put the idea in my head that you know i need to be looking at some of these alternatives here where you know these optical drive replacements these sd card mods that you can get and so that's what this orange gamecube has so basically it got the gc loader update the the optical drive replacement that you can get for a gamecube in here so this was done by blackdog tech that's a company that basically i believe they i'm not sure if they actually created this or they do the mods or both but they did this mod and so essentially what they do is they rip out the guts of you know the optical drive and then it's a plug-and-play solution in here so basically it goes in fairly easily and then all you have to do is put your games on an sd card and by the way guys you know me i am all about physical media and having a actual physical game collection and as you see here you know my nintendo game collection is pretty decent and i have a few game cubes that are stock and i will continue to have these so you see this purple one here uh i also have a black one that is sitting in my kiosk and of course i still have the beautiful panasonic q console there so again these will all play physical media and so if you're not familiar what's going on here basically the gc loader is booting up homebrew software this menu that you see here called swiss and so swiss is a program that lets you play backups of your gamecube games as well as run homebrew and i'm going to show some of that here in a second the other thing i did is i took a look at the video out and was trying to see if i could improve it even further so obviously i've covered many different hdmi adapters for the gamecube in the past and as you see here i'm actually using the one by eon this is the gc hd mk-2 so this is an hdmi adapter that is just plug and play you just plug it into the back of a gamecube and it taps into the digital i believe it's component out and so it'll output it via hdmi at a a video resolution of 480p and it works really well but then i got to thinking that i also have the m classic adapter so m classic adapter is really wild i've covered it also on my channel i've connected it to a bunch of different systems like the switch the vita uh also the psp and essentially what it does is it upscales the video and also it adds some anti-aliasing effects and things like that all without adding any sort of latency and i thought well that's kind of interesting because that should give me a lot of options when it comes to actually getting the best video out of this so let me go ahead and show you what i'm talking about here so we're going to start off by showing you super smash brothers melee running directly out of the hdmi cable there so basically what this is this is running at 480p now this youtube video is running at 1080p and so final cut and youtube is you know i've upscaled it a little bit but basically you know this is kind of like straight out of the game cube and it looks pretty good but then here is the same thing using the m classic in its retro mode so it is outputting at actual 1080p but it's also doing a couple other things here and depending on your taste you may or may not like it so essentially what it's doing here is anti-aliasing of the polygon so instead of getting a lot of jagged edges it in real time tries to smooth all of those out and you know i actually think it looks pretty good here now not every game is something that you might want to have this or use this on but i actually think it looks pretty good here is super mario sunshine and again this is just 480p straight out of the hdmi cable and then here is the m classic and as you can see it looks pretty good i really like what it's doing here now let's go ahead and take a look at resident evil 4 starting again with the 480p signal this is the beginning of the game now the resolution is something i kind of want to talk about there because again that's only 480p and in the background there again you see it with the m classic so it's increasing the resolution and as you see as i compare these two it's also smoothing out the polygons a little bit and again this is going to be to taste i think some games probably look better than others i think it could be something that actually you could probably get used to also some of the stuff comes down to kind of our perception of how we think these games looked when we first played them you know what i'm talking about where you look back and you're like man that was such a great looking game and then you booted up today on a modern television you're like ooh that looks pretty rough and so what the m classic tries to do is i don't know basically just again upscale and try to smooth out some of that rough spots as best as it can and it may end up looking a little weird you know like it does in wave race here it's hard for me to say if i prefer the original because it's telling me exactly what that game you know would look like on a 4k television versus what the m classic is doing but again i like having the option and then remember how i said that this will also run homebrew games well one of the first homebrew games i was dying to check out is something called the game boy interface essentially this is a replacement for that official game boy startup disc and this gives you a bunch of options that you wouldn't normally have that frankly in most cases improves pretty much everything when it comes to running original game boy games on this device you see a bunch of the options here including the ability to force the tv aspect ratio also the video format so whether it's gonna be 50 hertz or 60 hertz you can also mess around with the video mode so that is the resolution and also the frame rate and then check it out there's also a sharpness filter there which makes a huge difference so for instance here i'm playing golden sun 2 and this is running with the official nintendo game boy startup disc you can tell because it has the border around there and it looks pretty soft and it's always looks soft and for many many years this was by far the best way to play this and then here's the same cartridge but running the homebrew gbi software and yes it's night and day this is this is a much better video quality here here we have mario and luigi and again this is straight off of the official disc and then we're gonna go over to the gbi version and what's wild is that there's even more you can do with it because they have specific builds of it for people who are really into speed running so i guess basically it lowers the latency of the software almost down to nothing if you are going to try to speed run some of these older game boy games so it's pretty wild to see what the community has done with this it's a pretty cool piece of software and so there you go i've updated my accessories to match the spice orange gamecube i've had the optical drive replaced with the gc loader so now that i can run games and homebrew off an sd card and i've added the m classic to the video chain so that i can upscale my video to 1080p and also get some of those fancy features like the anti-aliasing and so i'm pretty happy with this gamecube it's all pimped out and ready to rock and roll with the latest stuff and if you want to do this to your gamecube maybe you got an extra city around and you want to upgrade it i'll put links to all the companies that provide all this stuff down in the video description below and i'd be kind of curious to know what you think about this is there anything i'm missing on this i think the only thing i'm probably missing really is that there is an orange spice version of the hdmi adapter that eon makes but honestly i wasn't willing to pay another 160 dollars to match it i could have but i already had this one in my collection you know the purple one so i was like okay that's just going to be good enough but i'd love to know what you think down the comments below and as always guys i want to thank you for watching my channel thank you for subscribing and take care
