Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
Come on, they're not at all convincing. They're wearing hats.
Simple answer: they probably are commiting an offence. S.90(2) of the Police act states "Any person who, not being a constable, wears any article of police uniform in circumstances where it gives him an appearance so nearly resembling that of a member of a police force as to be calculated to deceive shall be guilty of an offence". However, if I came across this on my travels, I would likely use my discretion.
Why are they dressing up as cops to play a piano anyway? Anyone got context for this?
I am also conflicted.
I am not a cop, so don't intend to speak on behalf of. However the sight of public dressing up in what is in my opinion, very fucking convincing police uniform, slightly bothers me.
Only because dickheads that might want to do things less innocent than playing the piano, might think its okay or be emboldened..
I don't think its cause for arrest, as they aren't exactly acting as though they were in the role of a PC, but I would give them a talking to and explain the dangers both legally, physically and practically if there was an actually 'incident' and they happened to be there for people to look to.
Happy for people to disagree though.
These two (Brendan and Terry) are quite big youtubers, who upload pieces played on public pianos. Really good pianists, with a big following.
Although I admit they can be a little extravagant with their attempt to increase viewing numbers! They wear other uniforms too (builders/couriers/pilots) so people assume theyโre just ordinary people having a go at the piano....
