I know what you're thinking another video about the Apple watch Ultra yes yes it is [Applause] welcome back I'm Dave from Chase to Summit and in this video today we're going to talk yet again about the Apple watch Ultra I know I've posted a lot of videos about this thing but it's very exciting and I think this video is pretty important for a lot of people out there in case you missed it a few days ago I posted my in-depth review about the Apple watch Ultra where I cover all the new features the ins and the outs and everything in like a 30 minute long video and if you want to learn all about this watch go check that video out in the conclusion of that video I basically say that the Apple watch Ultra is probably the best smart watch on the market currently but it's not really the best sport watch for a few key reasons first of all when it comes to Wellness tracking the Apple watch Ultra does collect a ton of metrics but it doesn't provide any feedback to the user on your daily daily Wellness like how you're feeling your HRV status it doesn't raise a flag if you're not feeling well and your HRV drops for instance you have to go in and actively look at the numbers and try to understand what they mean and on top of the wellness aspect is training tools the Apple watch Ultra will track your runs and rides and things but it won't let you know if you're overdoing it or you're not doing enough or you're just kind of somewhere in between or maybe your heart rate's been particularly high or there's no red flags to let you know how your training is going another aspect of the Apple watch Ultra that's felt like it needed some improvement is offline mapping and navigation because this watch is marketed towards outdoor enthusiasts and in the marketing material they had a guy hanging off of like Mount Everest that guy's probably going to need a map of where he is and he probably doesn't have a cellular connection or Wi-Fi or maybe Mount Everest has that by now I don't really know now that I've gone through some of the shortcomings on the Apple watch filter let's get to the point of this video how do we solve these well the good news is this is an Apple Watch and because it's an Apple Watch it means we have the IOS app store with thousands of apps there might be millions of them that we can download to solve some of these issues before we get into the first app a quick disclaimer I'm not affiliated with anything I'm about to show you I haven't talked to these app developers or the brands involved here they're not paying me to make this video they don't even know I'm making this video so really these are apps I just found on my own and through the comments a lot of people have suggested these and that's why I'm showing them off because I think they're really cool so with that all the way let's get into the first app called athletic so this app really excites me it basically solves the issue with the Apple watch of not providing any Wellness or training feedback by covering it all in one app right up front I do want to mention that the athletic app is a subscription-based model however it's pretty affordable at just 29 per year and in terms of pricing that's pretty inexpensive when you compare it to something like the whoop platform which is 30 a month this is just thirty dollars a year so there's two aspects to the athletic app there's the phone app which is really all you need but there's also an app for the watch which I'll cover in a minute first let's talk about the phone app so you can see here I've got my iPhone 14 pro here and I've got the athletic app launched and up top we've got a series of tabs we've got recovery exertion sleep and energy and then down at the bottom here we've also got additional tabs for today trans Health workouts and calendar so right now we're looking at my recovery for today and up top here the first pane shows recovery score and that gives me percentage from zero to a hundred percent on how recovered I am from the previous day and what's really cool about this app is that it gives you a little blurb about what's going on in just plain English right below that score so here it says your past three recoveries are below 50 and trending downward pay attention to your body and take a rest day if required I probably need arrested and at the bottom of that pain it also gives me my HRV and my resting heart rate it'll also tell me if my resting heart rate in HRV are trending up and showing a green arrow or trending down and showing a red arrow and then scrolling down to the bottom of the screen it shows my recovery by day showing the past seven days now that we've talked about the recovery page I'm gonna go ahead and swipe right into the exertion page and on this page it shows all of your activity for the day this is very similar to The Strain score that you get from like the whoop platform so you can see here that my score for today in terms of exertion is zero it's because it's still pretty early I haven't gone on my run yet and I haven't really exerted myself and then below my exertion score you can see that I've got a Target exertion Zone based on my previous day's recoveries and all the information that this app has about me it wants me to hit a score between 4.2 and 6.2 and then below that it also gives me a suggested workout for today which we'll talk about in a minute and it says that with this workout I should be able to hit 4.7 in my exertion score and then we've got a seven day trend graph here which is similar to the recovery page except now we're looking at my exertion scores for the past seven days of activity with exertion out of the way let's swipe over again and drop into the Sleep page here and here you got a very similar set of metrics but for sleep so at the top you can see I've got a 74 sleep score from last night's sleep says I slept for 6 hours and 17 minutes but I should have slept for eight and a half hours in order to get my maximum recovery during sleep and then of course just like the other pages I get a little blurb that tells me what's going on since I got adequate rest but I should try to get more sleep tonight if I'm training today scrolling down we've got more details about my sleep my time in bed my sleep efficiency my awake time my REM sleep my core sleep and deep sleep and then right below that we've got a little graph for restorative sleep time restorative sleep according to this app is my deep sleep in REM sleep combined and what percentage of that was my total sleep and here we have a really interesting feature in the Sleep tab in the athletic app and that's this target sleep time so the app's telling me in order to get maximum recovery in my sleep I need 8 hours and eight minutes of total sleep and I should go to bed at 10 44 pm and try to wake up at 6 52 a.m something tells me my kids will not allow that to happen but if I did I should get my full recovery from the full value from my sleep and then scrolling down there's a really interesting graph for Sleep debt over time so it's just showing me if I got enough sleep or not enough sleep on a graph form for the past 14 days and which way I'm trending and then all the way at the bottom of the Sleep tab you can Mark what happened the day before like drinking alcohol caffeine having stress at your job having a late meal Etc and you can kind of flag that day and let you know what happens so you can see the consequences of those Acts swiping over we have the final tab or the Energy tab and this is pretty straightforward it shows you how many calories you've burned for the day along with how many calories you've consumed so you might be wondering how does this app get all this information well the cool thing about this app is that it syncs up with apple health so it's pulling all this information about your sleep and your calories burned and all that from Apple's Health which is why my energy consumed here says zero because I've not logged any meals in apple Health the other thing you can do here is you can link your MyFitnessPal app which is very popular calorie counting app to your Apple Health app and then that will also sink into here so if you add mails there you'll see them here which is super cool okay now that we've gone through the daily metrics let's click on this Trends tab here to see what's going on over time so up top here there's a graph that shows your recovery versus exertion over time I find this to be super cool because you can also click on this tab that brings you to a 30-day view of your exertion and recovery and what's super interesting about this app is because it's based on Apple Health you can actually pull in data from all different sources I've got stuff in here from Garmin Connect and from the chorus platform anything that syncs with apple health will get pulled into this app so my point here is that you could use any device with this app and get the same kind of data it could be your Garmin Phoenix 7 it could be a chorus paste too it could be an Apple Watch Ultra or all of them at the same time and you can sync them all in here and have one standard location to see all of your Wellness data and I think that's really awesome there's also a graph for heart rate recovery which is a pretty interesting metric so this metric is basically trying to identify how quickly your body can get back to a normal heart rate after an intense activity and at the top of this graph there's two values for my most recent heart rate along with my averages over time and at the bottom of the graph is a little gauge to let you know where you fall in terms of fitness and then the final pane on the trends page is your estimated VO2 max or cardio Fitness as Apple calls it and I don't know how accurate this is it's telling me I've got a VO2 max of 53.1 other apps tell me I'm around 55 but I've also never been lab tested so I don't really know okay now that we're done with the trends tab let's dive into the health tab because this has some really interesting features so at the top here you've got a summary of sort of your vitals for the day so you've got your HRV you've got your resting heart rate your blood oxygen saturation and your respiratory rate those are all critical pieces of information you probably want to see quickly so they're right at the top and Below each value there's also a little indicator that lets you know if it's good or bad if it's green it's good if it's yellow you might want to look at it and if it's red it's bad in scrolling down on this page there's a really nice graph for a bunch of information so you can see here I can map my HRV over time my resting heart rate over time my respiratory rate and my spo2 levels and if we click over to the final tab I want to talk about today it's the workouts tab up top you've got a graph that kind of looks like Strava showing where you were for the past month and where you are for the current month and then below that are all of your recent workouts for me it's mainly running if I click on any of these workouts it brings me to that activity and it'll show me all the information about that activity including all the proprietary information that this app generates like the effort level and if I scroll down it'll also give me my heart rate recovery for this particular activity which is super cool now that we've gone through the athletic app on my phone I do want to quickly go through the app on the Apple watch Ultra as well so if I dive into my app grid here and scroll up to the corner you can see that little a icon that is the athletic app I'm going to tap in on that and you can see I do get all the information I got from the phone app right on my wrist if I want to see it at a glance so I've got my recovery and my exertion score right here in the app but one cool thing about the app is that I can actually swipe to the right here and drop into a new workout within the athletic app on my watch and why would I want to do this well because if I click on run here so you can see my heart rate at the top here if I swipe over I've got my calories burned distance and all the things you'd want to see while you're running but on top of all this I've also got my effort score right here so I can actually go for a run have a Target effort score from the app and while I'm running see it in real time and once I hit that effort score I can stop my run so that's the athletic app on the Apple watch Ultra and the iPhone and what it looks like the metrics you get honestly for 29 a year I feel like this is a really good value and if you have an Apple Watch and an iPhone and you care about these sorts of details totally worth investing in I know there's other options out there but this feels well thought out it feels accurate and well built and it's probably going to improve your Fitness if you follow it like I said no affiliation this isn't sponsored I don't even know the people that make this app maybe they're terrible people I hope not but it's a good app now that we've solved the wellness and training feedback issue with the Apple watch Ultra I want to talk about my other main gripe with the Apple watch Ultra and that's going to be mapping and navigation when you're out on an activity if you saw my review you know that the Apple watch Ultra has an updated Compass widget that has a backtrack function which is super cool but it's really not that useful when you're in an activity when you're actually out on the run because you got to open a separate app you got to dive into it hit the button and then you can start your backtrack I want it to be like built into the app so the app I'm talking about now is called work Outdoors all one word and I know it's a very popular app on the Apple devices because a lot of people seem to use it work Outdoors is a paid app just like athletic but this one's super cheap it comes in at 5.99 here in the USA and it's a one-time fee you don't have to have a reoccurring subscription which is pretty amazing that's very affordable so workout doors essentially converts your Apple watch Ultra into a full featured sports watch for activities to get to the point I'm going to start with the watch app on this one you can see there's the icon for work Outdoors it's that round icon with the guy running in it click on that and we're into the app so here I've got all of my activity profiles at the top here you've got some information all the way on the left is actually my GPS signal of my current position which is not great right now because I'm inside a building then I've got the battery life of the Apple watch Ultra right now and the time of day and below that are all the activity profiles so there's activity profiles for a bunch of things from running cycling hiking walking skiing paddle boarding paddling swimming Etc but you can also set up custom profiles to do just about anything you want the cool thing about work Outdoors is you don't don't have to do an activity if you just want to use the mapping functionality you can just click on this map button at the top there and it'll drop you directly into a map instead of into an activity like a run another nice feature about workout doors is that it's compatible with external sensors so you can see here there's a little Bluetooth icon that says sensors if I click on that I can choose various sensors for different activities if I had a heart rate strap that I wanted to use for running or some kind of power meter for cycling I can set that all up here another interesting aspect about work Outdoors is that you can import GPX files so a GPX file if you don't know is a pre-made route for navigation if you intend on going for a run and you want to pre-design the course before you head out there and have that map on your wrist you can do that with work outdoors with a GPX file by clicking on clicking on Roots here and sending the file over from your iPhone or MacBook and just loading it into the app honestly the settings on workout doors are really intense there's a lot to go through I'm not going to cover everything here but like every aspect of this app is customizable so now I'm just going to start an activity I'm going to start a run so we can see what it looks like there's a countdown timer unfortunately this app has not utilized the action button yet to start an activity I'm hoping they do that in a firmware update or a software update down the road but it's not here yet so you can see here I have workout doors to display a map view as my First Data Page and below that I've got my mileage my calories burned the duration of my event and my beats per minute of my heart rate if I go ahead and swipe over here I get even more information and like I said this is fully customizable within the app I can change these metrics to be whatever I want and swiping over again we've got another data page but the best part about workout doors is the map view this map is very detailed in my area it actually shows the trails that you're running on in the woods and stuff it's got a lot of information and it could probably get you out of a pinch if you get lost and within the map view you can use the digital Crown to actually zoom into the map and zoom out of it which is super cool and you can just touch the screen to pan around the map to see where you're going okay now that we've gone through work Outdoors on the Apple watch Ultra let's take a look get the smartphone app because that's pretty interesting as well if I click on screens tab at the bottom here you can see this is where you can customize all the screens within your activity for instance if I want to customize my running activity I can click on one of these screens and go in and change all kinds of various data fields within the screen which is super cool and there is a ton of stuff to choose from here from running power to Cadence to Vertical oscillation that's all in here you can even do things like change the size of your text within your activities so you can see here the little a if I click on the big a you can see the text got really big within that screen like I said there's a ton of customization within work outdoors I can't cover everything in this video but you can basically customize every aspect of the app the next tab here is for mapping this is super cool so with the work Outdoors app you can actually install map tiles like areas of the map into the watches internal storage so you don't need a cellular or internet connection when you're out in the woods to see the map to do this you simply scroll around to the map area you want to save click an area and then pull a boundary box around the area that you want to save let go of that and say transfer six files now that data will be synced over to my Apple watch Ultra so I can use that without an internet connection in the final tab here in the work Outdoors app is going to be your settings there's a ton of settings in here I'm definitely not going through all this but I do want to highlight one thing and it's that you can set up exports for Strava GPX tcx fit files and root exports all right here in the settings so after your activities everything's sent out to Strava Etc or you can even email a fit file to yourself to put somewhere else there's a lot of functionality here and that's work outdoors in a nutshell like I said for six dollars that is a crazy amount of customization and functionality that you can get on your Apple watch Ultra for six dollars like that's as much as a coffee cost at Starbucks right even though work Outdoors is really good there's still some functionality I wish it had like creating a course on the Fly Right on your wrist without needing your phone or a GPX file it doesn't do that you still need to make a GPX file somewhere else and import it into the app where if you have something like a Garmin Fenix 7 you can do that right on your wrist you could put in that you want to go to the top of the mountain and the watch will actually find the trails to get you there but those are details and Beggars can't be choosers you're getting mapping on your Apple watch Ultra and that's really what it's all about another thing I wanted to mention about work Outdoors is that the battery life on it seems very similar to The Standard workout app I was worried by using a third party that we'd get worse battery life but it's really optimized and it works really well so you don't have to worry about that and honestly between using the athletic app in the workout Doors app on the Apple watch Ultra I've been really enjoying wearing this watch and I kind of get what it's all about now having cellular built in and be able to make phone calls without my phone on me when I'm on a run or streaming from Spotify or apple podcast doing all the things that Apple watches are designed for but still having that Beast functionality of being a really good Wellness tracker with the athletic Gap and being a full sports watch with the workout Doors app it's all it's kind of the best of every World however even though these apps make the Apple watch Ultra a far more useful Fitness and sport watch there's one thing that they can't fix and that's going to be the battery life on the Apple watch Ultra you still have to charge this watch every couple of days aside from that though these apps make this watch way more functional way more useful and I'm really enjoying using it and now I want to hear from you are you using the athletic app or workout doors on your Apple watch let me know in the comments down below and if you have an app suggestion that you think is better than these two let me know about that too because I'm still learning I want to know all the good apps out there we did it we reached the end of this video and if you made it this far you probably enjoyed it and if you did please give me a thumbs up and subscribe down below so you don't miss more videos from me in the future also if you're planning on getting an Apple Watch Ultra Series 8 and SC a series 7 any Apple watch for that matter check out the links in the description down below because those do help support my channel and they cost nothing extra to you so you might as well use them and that is it that was a long video about two apps I'm sorry about that but I really wanted to show you all the details I gotta go now I'll see you next time bye foreign [Music]
