joining us today whether you're here in person or watching online don't worry that uh you did not pick up your communion elements today as you can see they'll be served later in the service from the in person and online uh before we begin our time of worship I invite you to stand if you are able and join me in the reading of God's word this morning we will be reading from Philippians 2 verses 5 to 11 I will begin reading verses 5 to8 and I ask that you please join me in Reading verses 9 to 11 in your relationships with one another have the same mindset as Christ Jesus who being in very nature God did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own Advantage rather he made himself Nothing by taking the very nature of a servant being made in human likeness and being found in appearance as a man he hung humbled himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross please read this with me therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on Earth and under the Earth and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ Christ is Lord to the glory of God and I will not be [Applause] [Music] sh thank you you may be seated good morning everyone welcome to trolls Road church and uh if you're watching at home or you're here in the building I I'm really thrilled that you have chosen to join us this morning we are here together in God's presence and we have lots of things to celebrate this morning and we are going to do just that we actually have enjoyed in recent weeks uh opportunities to worship and celebrate the goodness of God in the lives of people here at trolls we had a membership uh celebration a few weeks back 12 people coming into membership at trolls next week we have several people in including some of our young people being baptized what a celebration this morning though is equally celebratory because we are doing a child dedication one of uh uh probably several over the next uh few months this is a special and sacred moment to commit the life of a little one to God we see this in scripture through the story of Samuel when his mother Hannah prays and and as God answers those prayers those those prayers that lasted for a long time but when God answered she in turn dedicated Samuel to the Lord and to the work of the Lord and God used him in a very powerful way Mary the mother of Jesus and Joseph the father Earthly father of Jesus brought Jesus to the temple to be dedicated to the Lord after he was born and and we see this idea of dedication as something that is a powerful tool used by God in the lives of those being dedicated as well as the lives of those surrounding the individuals this morning we are celebrating the gift of children Jesus said to his followers and to everyone who was listening hey don't push the children away let them come to me and as a church we think that's significant that we need to provide opportunities for children to come to Jesus he also gives a very Stark warning don't cause children to suffer to stumble don't get in their way there are very bad consequences for people that do those types of things and he even even elevates the faith of children saying that's an example of how we all should see God and His goodness and his promises the faith like a child we also want to recognize the responsibility of the family that is dedicating their child but the church Community we are responsible for this family and for this child and finally we are prayerfully committing to to making sure that Jesus is at the center of our lives so that we can set an example for this young child as she grows up that she might see what a relationship with Jesus looks like so with that introduction I'd like to invite Violet benam to come on up and bring your mom and dad and your sister with you come on up and join me on the platform it's great to have uh not only uh more and Courtney and Lily here celebrating with Violet this morning but there's other family that are here some traveled a great distance to be here and we are so glad I should just mention that Dan and Annette are here and the reason this is cool is they're actually just stopping in for a few days because Annette's on her way to Winnipeg to start at New Hope Church in Winnipeg as the lead Pastor so let's be praying for Dan and Annette as they continue their Ministry Journey andette was on staff here when I when when I uh came on staff and have enjoyed their friendship and uh and being able to uh continue to celebrate with their family as uh Courtney and Morgan and violet and Lily are here today with us child dedication is dedicating a child yes but it's also a commitment and a prayer that you Morgan and Courtney are making as parents you are committing to raising Violet with God's help to know and understand the scriptures by teaching her setting an example and bringing her to church so that she might come to know Jesus as her Lord and Savior and walk her Journey of Faith with Jesus but it's also a prayer asking and trusting God to pour out his immeasurable love on Violet and provide all she will need to live the life she was created and called to live as a follower of Jesus that's an amen I got that I love it I love it it's not just the Bentham family this morning though that is making this commitment as I mentioned we as a church family it's wonderful to see this picture up here it's a Hallmark moment Grandma's about to take a photo and that's beautiful but this is something that we take very seriously we have a responsibility as a church family to pray for support and serve the benams and the last question of this dedication will actually be for us as a church family and so when we get there I will invite you to stand and join me at as we answer that question together I have met with this family actually a couple times because it was only a few years ago that Lily you were up on this platform we were dedicating you and now we get the opportunity again I am so thankful for this family one of the things I love about Morgan and Courtney is their easygoing servant Hearts uh Courtney helps out with our children's ministry specifically the nursery and uh Morgan helps out wherever you ask him to but he also uh is a big blue jay fan and so as uh created some watch parties for us so we can invite friends to just watch some sports and to hang out and and invite the community into our facility and so I just appreciate their attitude towards Ministry and towards life so I'm going to be asking questions of the two of you the three of you you can answer them as well if if you like Lily okay and they're going to be on the back screen but let's put that first question up do you in the presence of God and this church solemnly dedicate your child to the Lord will you Faithfully strive by word and example to lead Violet to personal faith in Christ do you accept the authority of the Bible as the word of God and will you diligently teach Violet the Commandments and Promises of almighty God raising her in the ways of the Lord will you continue to raise Violet in The Fellowship of the church so she might see and experience what it means means to be part of the body of Christ and I'd like to invite all of you to stand with me and for you to respond to this question do you commit to supporting this family through prayer encouragement and love in fulfilling our calling as the family of God in their lives Violet I have a verse for you and I suspect you like to eat so I thought this would be a perfect verse for you psalm 34:8 says taste and see that the Lord is good and I want that to be a special verse for you for the rest of your life I'm going to pray for you and I'm going to try and hold you while I do that how does that sound let's let's see how this goes hi I'm gonna hold you out so you can see mommy there we go and I'm gonna get my prayer here so you can read with me let's bow our heads and pray together heavenly father thank you for Violet that she has created in your image special and unique bless her protect her and guide her each step of her life may she experience your love and grace specifically through a personal relationship with Jesus one day thank you for her family for Morgan Courtney and Lily we ask that your Holy Spirit would provide the wisdom and strength they will need to parent her in a way that honors you we pray for Lily that she continues to discover her special identity as a child of God and a big sister we pray for the rest of the family for their friends and for our church community that we will set an example of your love and transforming work of your salvation in our lives and now we dedicate Violet to you God your purposes and your plans in the name of the father son and holy spirit amen God bless you all right um let's do a soft clap or snapping of the fingers in celebrating the life of this little one I'll invite you to have a seat and at this time I'd like to invite Nora our board chair and Corey the chair of our Personnel team to join me on the platform Cory's wearing his trolls Road shirt because he's going down to uh yeah team trolls he's going down to help out with Kingdom Kids here in a moment and uh and so I'm very thankful that uh he's able to share in this announcement and uh if you have questions about being involved in Kingdom Kids you can talk to Corey uh after the service you could follow the parade down afterwards with the kids that's right so good morning church uh coming to you every year our church applies for a grant a federally regulated grant called Canada summer jobs uh this grant is administered by our local MP MP's office and what it does is it provides funds so that we can hire uh predominantly students between age of 15 and 30 for our church to help out with the different Ministries over the summer this year however there was a gap during our local election and the funds never came we were waiting you usually the the process starts in January and then by late April we usually hear late April came we didn't hear anything contacted the office they told us to hold on be patient contacted them early May didn't come we as a Personnel team thought it best to start the interview process students are looking for jobs so we did it with a caveat that the money would come while May 23rd we were told with uh many other Charities churches within our within our area that the funds would not be coming so this was a problem how are we going to help and fund our canes jobs the PT team Mets prayed deliberated figured out what to do we went to each of the children's each of the ministry uh leaders and asked what would be the impact say if we were not to do this well the impact would be large so with our children children with our can of summer job grants the students they help out in Sunday school they help alleviate the pressure on the teachers over the summer as many people go away we have youth programs set up in July and August that we probably wouldn't be able to run and our VBS they do a ton of work for that a lot of the pre-work a lot of the prep work so that the many volunteers could come alongside so we decided as a personal team that it would be wise to offer a proposal to the board to see if there would be any chance we can do an unplanned budgeted expense for two students this year within that caveat we asked that maybe it' be a good a good idea and I had a recommendation that we would come to the congregation and let them know what was going on but also allow you to help out with an unplanned chance of giving so therefore we've have brought it to the board and I'll pass it over Nora thank you thank you Corey and thank you uh to your team as well for uh all the work that you've done so the recommendation from the Personnel team was presented to the board the board has approved the unbudgeted wage expense for employment of two summer students the board feels this is a good use of money that we've saved up it is an investment in the lives of Our Youth and Young adults not just the ones we hire but also the ones that will attend the programs they organize the board would also like to invite the congregation to participate in this investment for those who want to donate there will be a designated fund set up until the end of July any excess will go towards student Ministries thank you uh Nora and Corey thank you to the Personnel team in the board that had to scramble to make this decision quickly we're just in the process of communicating with all of the people that applied and so we're hoping uh next week or or over the next few weeks to announce the names of those that will be serving we're hiring two students for the summer I'm very grateful for this God has been good to to our church through his generosity using your generosity and so we do have the funds to do this and as Nora said this is an investment not only in the people we're hiring but also when the people they will serve in continuing this ministry uh opportunity each summer and Lord willing we've spoken to our MP that next summer will be a very different case but for this summer I'm very thankful that this has happened so thank you to the board the Personnel team and thank you to all of you uh would you continue to pray about this if you would like to give uh giving is online we have a prayer box at the back you just have to mark on your envelope very clearly summer uh students or something to that effect so we know that that's where you would like your giving to go I'd like to take a moment and just pray about this again God answered our prayers we are still able to hire students but we hire students so we can do ministry so we want to continue to pray for this summer and the opportunities that will unfold heavenly father thank you for the way that you have blessed our church so that we have the resources to do this I want to thank you for the students and the young people that we have in our church family and all of the good things that are going on the report of the retreat last week the baptisms coming up next week and and so many good Ministry moments that are taking place uh Lord I pray that as we invest in our young people God that you would do a miracle and incredible work in each of their lives that they would come to know Jesus that they would experience the power the confidence and the love that comes from knowing their heavenly father I just want to pray too for all of the children in our church I'm so thankful to to see so many young faces each Sunday and throughout the week I pray that you would bless them as they head down now to their Kingdom Kids time uh God you are good and I pray that you would help us show and teach each young one that very important lesson and we pray these things in Jesus name amen amen Kids kindergarten to grade six you can make your way out the back door on my left for your Kingdom Kids program church family let's continue to pray for the Bentham family for our summer Ministries for our kids and uh we are just looking forward to what God is doing as we enter into our our communion service the rest of the service is going to be communion we're going to sing songs we're going to take time to think about and talk about why we do what we do we're going to be inviting you to come to stations this morning to receive communion for those of you that are unable to do that we will be sending uh Pastor Angelica will be going around with trays so everyone can participate but uh we are going to take this time just to sit in the presence of God and to sit in that understanding of the Jesus [Music] Christ bear your cross as you wait for the crown till the world of the treasure you found [Music] please be seated we're going to have uh lots of words on the screen this morning for you to follow along and uh the the portion in yellow will be your part to participate um I would encourage you to speak out but if if you're not comfortable with that you can speak in uh you can speak quietly this is we're doing this together but this is uh an opportunity for you in the presence of God this is an opportunity for you to accept that invitation that we just sang about to come to God through Jesus we're going to put the invitation on the screen we come to this table not as strangers but invited as children of God we come to this table not due to our goodness but due to the goodness of God in Christ Jesus every time we do communion at trolls Road Church we have What's called the invitation and and and the communion service depending on your denominational tradition might have different language about the different components it might even simplify some or exclude some depending on the the history of that denomination or the theology but one of the things that's significant is every communion service starts off with an invitation that sets the table the table is set and it is the Lord's table that's one of the things we call communion it is not Charles rh's table it is not Pastor John's table it is not your table it is the Lord's and he has invited you here this morning to participate with him in Colossians 1 it tells us that we all were once strangers that we actually were estranged from God we didn't think about him we didn't know him as as a matter of fact we went as far is not just to be strangers but but in some cases to be enemies of God resisting fighting against but in Colossians 1 it says but Christ reconciled Christ r-r relationship us through the cross and brings us to God holy and blameless in his sight not because we're holy and blameless but because Jesus is Holy and blameless and we come through him I had a professor when I was uh doing some of my education who said The only person who's not worthy to be at the communion table is the one that thinks they deserve to be at the communion table but for everyone else no matter how you feel no matter whether you think you are the last person that should be here or you have to get something right first or something has to be fixed or changed no you've been invited this is the table where things get fixed and changed the invitation is not for you to get dressed up and wash up and make yourself presentable and then come the invitation is come and let God let God do his work Let Jesus do the the cleansing transforming forgiving work in your life let the Holy Spirit dress you up and prepare you for what is in store the invitation is a special request made by the creator of the universe and it is one extended in Grace for you to join Jesus at his table the goal is not to take communion the goal is to reconcile re relationship with God and so this morning the goal is to think about our relationship with God that is possible because of the death and resurrection of Jesus that is possible because of the powerful work of the Holy Spirit who cleanses us gives us new life and allows us to live that life so this morning the invitation ask a simple question do we have a relationship with Jesus that is the invitation come to the table and experience a relationship with God through Jesus then we need to consider is our relationship with God good is it is it fresh is it something that is the priority in our life or is it a compartment over there somewhere or or something we bring out on occasion or pay attention to on Sundays and then we ask the question in light of my relationship with God how are my relationships with other people now again I want to emphasize those questions no matter how you answer them do not negate your invitation to come I I really want you to appreciate that everybody is welcome around this table but this table is designed for us to ask those questions at this table we consider the possibility of extending or receiving forgiveness from God or from others at this table we experience what John Wesley would call a means of Grace that we meet with God and we experience his grace in a very unique and specific specific way we experience relationship forgiveness reconciliation and all the promises of God as we remember the death and resurrection of his son and so as we gather around the table as we join with Jesus at his table we need to ask those questions how is my relationship with God and how is my relationship with others I'm going to invite Pastor Angelica to lead us in a time of confession to give us some framework so that we can ask those questions together here we are God has invited and we have come we've come as we are so we're going to take some time to pray and pray confessing burdens and Brokenness that we bring to this table so I invite you to follow along on screen I'll lead us in a time of prayer and quiet reflection the Lord be with you and also with you lift up your hearts we lift them up to you almighty God to whom all hearts are open all desires known and from whom no secrets are hidden cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your holy spirit that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name through Christ Our Lord let's take some time to pray and confess the things that are on our hearts this morning almighty God our heavenly father we have sinned against you and against our neighbor in thought and word and deed we are truly sorry and repent of all our sins let's read this together for the sake of your son Jesus Christ who died for us forgive us and Grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name amen I again invite you to stand and sing with us [Music] Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that Sav the r like me I once was lost but now I found was blind but now I see was Grace that Tau my heart to feel and break my fears how preious did that Grace appear the I [Music] first my chames are G I've been set free my God my savior has ransomed me and the his Mercy uning love Amazing [Music] Grace the Lord the Lord has Pro is good to me his word My Hope SEC he will my shield and [Music] P as long [Music] asur my chains are [Applause] [Music] I've been set free my God my savior has me and of his Mercy re unending love Amazing Grace My Chains my chains are oh I been set free my God my S has res me and like his Mercy unending love Amazing Grace [Music] the Earth shall soon dis like snow the sun forar to shine but God who call me here will be [Music] forever my will be forever [Music] my you are forever [Music] please be [Music] seated once we confess our sins we receive What's called the Assurance of our forgiveness and that's just a really fancy way of saying it happened it really really worked and you might think that sounds funny it maybe even silly but the truth is if we feel really bad about something it's hard to believe that we can be forgiven it's hard enough with our friends and family when we screw up and when they forgive us sometimes we feel a little sheepish or we're not sure we trust it certainly even of ourselves we we struggle to forgive ourselves or believe that we've forgiven ourselves but with God absolute assurance and so we we read these scriptures together to give us the confidence and the assurance that we have confessed our sins he Faithfully just forgives us our sins as high as the heavens are above the Earth so great is his love for those who fear Him as far as the East is from the West so far he has removed our sins from us thanks be to God for his Indescribable gift the Peace of Christ be with you also with you this is a beautiful way for us to remind ourselves and to give us confidence that we have been forgiven but the goal is not forgiveness the goal is reconciliation that's what we talked about in the invitation the goal is being back in right relationship with God and with others and there is that beautiful feeling when a relationship that's important to us has been strained and when we reconnect maybe we haven't seen someone in a long time or maybe a harsh word was spoken or or or maybe circumstances changed or happened and you see that person and there's that that wonderful coming together remembering all of the good why you're in relationship to begin with the gospel is about restoring the Genesis 1 relationship between God and His Creation in Ephesians chapter 2 it tells us that because of God's great love for us that through uh that God has made us alive with Christ when we were dead in our sins in other words this forgiveness peace we just experienced is part of being made alive breathing fresh air and experiencing new life and it tells it tells us that Jesus came and preached peace and access to the father by one spirit this peace is is is confidence a sense of belonging and purpose and and intimacy with God and now because of all of that we have an opportunity for even deeper peace with those around us Jesus has removed the hindrances to a right relationship with God and whether you understand it fully or not he actually is helping you remove the hindrances to right relationships with your family with your friends with your co-workers your schoolmates so often guilt and shame can linger after we've been forgiven and Satan loves to whisper loves to whisper in the back of our minds questioning forgiveness or or questioning whether you actually meant it and yet this morning with confidence we say thanks be to God for his Indescribable gift of Jesus Christ forgiveness and new life we confidently and experience we confidently experience and celebrate our forgiveness our new life the work is done we have peace with God peace with one another and we can live out this beautiful Unity that should cause gratitude in our hearts the response to that should be a a smile that just just just emerges on our face even when life isn't perfect or circum ances are difficult the fact that we understand what God has done for us and realizing what that has accomplished for us and we're in the midst of experiencing it in real time fills us with joy and Thanksgiving I'm going to invite Pastor Joan to come up and lead us in a time of prayer for that Thanksgiving let's join together to offer our Thanksgiving to our wonderful God let us give thanks to the Lord Our God it is right to give our thanks and praise we praise you joining our voices with the choirs of heaven and with all the faithful of every time and place who Forever sing to the glory of your name holy holy holy Lord God of power and might heaven and Earth are full of your glory hosana in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord we thank you for your good creation and your ongoing participation and care for all things you have created we thank you for your gospel plan that invites all people to experience your forgiveness salvation and new life we thank you for your son who willingly came to show us your glory power and love in his life and death and Resurrection we thank you for your spirit who washes us clean and breathes new life into our souls we thank you for your word that gives light and understanding to the path you have for us and the hope you offer each of us we thank you for all the good things that you have have done in our lives we want to just pause for a moment to offer our own quiet prayers of Thanksgiving to The God Who has given us all these good things remembering all you have done we celebrate with joy all that is ours through who came ruin Sinners to to reclaim [Music] hallelujah what a [Music] savior guilty violent helpless we spotless Lamb of God was he full ofon can it be hallelujah what a [Music] savior lifted up was he to die it is finished was his cry now in Heaven exalted High [Music] hallelujah [Music] hallelujah [Music] hallelujah what a saor [Music] the invitation has been made the preparation has taken place and our hearts have been readied for the main course we have a little piece of bread and some wine or some grape juice I don't know how often you stop to think about why those two things it could have been a lot of different images from scripture could have been water could have been honey there there's all kinds of different things that could have been symbolized potentially but let me share with you why Bread and Wine is so significant when Jesus met with his followers that first communion service it was Passover and Passover Incorporated Bread and Wine specifically bread because of the way that God rescued and saved Israel in the book of Exodus if you remember remember the story they were slaves people without an identity people with no hope and God miraculously wonderfully rescued them out of Egypt and while they were traveling from Egypt to the promised land he provided Mana in the wilderness God's provision from heaven and so the Passover feast would include this bread to remind them of God's salvation and God's provision but it also included wine and wine was significant because it is a a drink of Celebration and it was a reminder of the promises that God had made to the Israelites in the desert in the wilderness as they made their way to the promised land and the promises throughout the Old Testament about God's blessing in the lives of those who follow him and wine comes to represent that in the Passover meal there would be several occasions where you would drink wine and at the end of the meal you would drink wine almost as a a toast to the Salvation of our God so Passover is the the first reason that we have bread and wine but the second reason is that it's very common every table at a meal in the ancient near East would have had Bread and Wine as much as it's appropriate what we do here today and and actually Jesus and later Paul encourages us to do this every time you have bread anytime you drink grape juice or wine it should trigger in your mind Jesus I believe he picked common elements so we would constantly bump into this beautiful reminder of God's love for us in such a practical and ordinary way and yet while being ordinary it also symbolizes a banquet Feast the scriptures talk of a wedding Feast when Jesus returns one day and and it won't be a little cube of bread and a little shot glass of juice it'll actually be a feast with with lots of bread and lots of other foods and goblets of delicious wine and juice and it's important for us to remember the ordinary and yet the wonderfully special nature of what we do and then finally he chose Bread and Wine because it symbolized and embodied his ministry remember as he fed the 5,000 he said to them I am the bread of life I am God 's provision for you in the spiritual Wilderness I am the Mana from heaven and we also know that at the first miracle of Jesus he turns water into wine announcing the kingdom of God has broken into the world in a dramatic way because Jesus Emmanuel God With Us Now dwells Among Us Jesus is the blessing and the abundance of God in our lives and the most obvious is that it represents Jesus himself who hung on the cross his body and his blood the sacrifice once and for all reminding us of the need for a sacrifice for the Forgiveness of our sins but a promise that that has been paid Jesus encouraged his followers with these words and you'll see them on the screen the Lord Jesus on the night he was betrayed he took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and said this is my body which is for you do this in remembrance of me and in the same manner after dinner he took the cup saying this cup is the New Covenant in my blood do this whenever you drink it in remembrance of me and we are told to continue to do this in until he returns and we enjoy that that banquet that wedding Feast of the church and Jesus coming together for all eternity here's how we're going to do communion this morning you will see there are three stations two at the front one at the back we are going to invite you to make your way up the side aisles towards one of these two tables or gather around the table at the back we have hosts at each of these tables who are going to lead you 6 78 at a time they're going to invite you to come into a circle and they're going to pass the bread they're going to pass the juice and we are going to take communion together in those groups of seven or eight and the cool thing about this is I'm hoping that you'll be in a circle with some people you don't know because that that is what trolls road is we are people that are coming together in the name of Jesus to celebrate his forgiveness his love and his salvation in our lives we we want I want you to come up the side aisles and then when you're done you're going to head back down the center aisle just for a little traffic control so there's not absolute chaos uh the juice has no lid on it no crinkle lid so that should cause reason for celebration right there we also have some gluten-free bread at each station for those of you that need that if you are unable to get to the front uh that's okay too Pastor Angelica is going to be coming around with bread and juice and she will serve you at your seat just as she walks around just raise your hand or or get her attention and she would be happy to do that you have been invited to come and so now in the name of Jesus I invite you to come and to enjoy what he has for you I'm going to invite the hosts to come to the front and I'm going to serve communion to them and want to do some confession maybe there's some hurt some Brokenness some some prayers that need answering maybe there's someone else in your life and you're desperately on their behalf one morning to come before the Lord or maybe this morning you tasted something and you haven't tasted it in a long time and you just want more of it we have some some of our prayer team will be up at the front we've got our prayer stations here but if you want some prayer this morning uh just come on up after we close our service and spend some time uh with God and and don't don't skip out on the opportunity if you feel the nudging of the holy spirit this morning as we conclude our time together we're going to read this benediction I I'll read the first half and you'll respond with the second half May the
