True Temper Stirrup Hoe Official Product Review

well hello everyone and welcome to another super exciting episode here on the mi Gardner channel today we're going to be doing a product review on the True Temper this is a true temper stirrup hoe a lot of times people call it a saddle hoe a hoola rake a hula hoe there's so many different names for it but basically it's called a stirrup rake or a stirrup hoe because it looks like a stirrup basically on a on a saddle on a horse riding saddle so the reason why I went out to purchase this is because as many of you know I have a weed problem here not afraid to admit it I have a garden just like yours that does in fact get weeds however ours is a really big garden and to hand weed was just getting to be impossible it was it was almost out of control and you can probably actually see what we're working with here this is what the garden looked like with when you see the onions right there that is what the garden actually looked like but the entire garden was like that now if you look at where I'm standing you can see that there are relatively no weeds the soil is really loose it's it's broken up it's crumbly and that is because this rake is amazing I've already put it through its test and before we start with this this kind of official review here I want to say that I'm not being sponsored by True Temper and I'm not receiving any money I actually went out and purchased it with my own money for the price $25 so $25 with Michigan tax so it's gonna be a little bit different but 25 bucks for me it's worth every penny in my opinion for that price at that price point and the job that it does I'm gonna first often say that that is worth every penny for me the next thing I want to discuss is the first of all 15 year warranty it's a limited light it's a 15 year limited warranty now to make sure I got that right there so with 15 limited 15 year limited warranty that is going to give you a long usage time for 25 bucks you really can't beat 15 years the next thing I want to discuss is the blade itself it has both front and back blades which is really great because part of the the feature here is just like a rake so you can you can push you can push or where you can pull back or you can do a combination of pushing and pulling and no matter what you're going to do it's going to cut those weeds because that's what the blades do now a lot of you are probably wondering about the blade strength before I did this review I wanted to use it for a day or two and really put it through that kind of that one-day break-in period where a lot of cheap stuff tends to break I put this thing through its paces I did the entire garden and about 90 percent of the garden and it is still holding up strong in fact we're going to show a little demonstration we're going to work through some plants show some kind of precision weeding because a lot of you have those close plants a lot of you have rows around plants that you're probably wondering how it does for kind of precise stuff because when you're in a when you're in a walk path like that it's really simple to just rake everything but the real precision comes when it's going around plants and now I'm not saying from what I've seen it's not going to get every single weed around those plants because you obviously you want to make sure you don't hit those plants because you're going to cut them and kill them as well so I leave about an inch and a half two inches around each plant and then I can just go in and easily weed around them but for bulk work there's nothing that touches this the next thing that you're going to see with the True Temper this this True Temper stirrup hoe here is that the blade actually has a little bit of wiggle room that is not a flaw in the design that is actually to give you a little bit of wiggle room so that when you when you push when you push the the the blade actually points down so it digs into the soil and then when you pull it bends backwards so that you can also get so it also digs in on the way back towards you so you're going to see here that when you push it just cuts right through the soil and then when you pull it cuts right through the soil as well and it leaves it really nice and loose absolutely no weeds this is what we're left with I do suggest now a lot of times people say that the that the basically the purpose of using a tool like this is just to cut the weeds and leave them sitting on top of the soil personally I don't buy that at all I think that's kind of a little bit lazy so the basically the the partner - this tool is a plastic rake I just get a really super lightweight plastic rake and I just kind of basically rake up all the weeds into a pile and then that way I can throw them out I really find that that's the best way to get the weed free garden because some of the weeds even though a lot of them are going to dry up on the top of the soil it's best to just get it out because if you have a rain or a heavy dew or maybe a few water those heavy duty weeds those grasses they're going to regrow so if you want a weed free garden just throw them out of there with a with a rake so now we're going to do some kind of precision stuff I'm going to show you how this works the last thing Oh last I want to talk about was the weight okay so wait we're talking maybe a pound and a half two pounds this this thing is really lightweight as far as you know balance like hand balance goes it's great the only thing I would say that I wish they would have done is to put a handle here for your hand see as you can see they got a great quality grippy handle up top that's awesome I really love that however when you're doing a lot of work you're obviously not just one-handed and not putting both hands up top like this you're putting your hand down here we can get good leverage and to be honest it kind of warm my hands out a little bit and it kind of it kind of started to rub my hands a little raw by the end of the day that's something that I might fix I might put some grip tape or something there just to give you a little extra protection on my hands but that's just something to consider as well for for you know a future design still great my opinion though but like I said lightweight so you're not you're not really lugging around anything too heavy so the first thing we're to do is some precision stuff around these onions here as you can see we've got plants really close together so these plants there's a plant here there's a plant here and a plant right here so you really want to make sure that you and then not to mention there's also plant here and a plant here so we're going to we're going to use a pulling action for this to get started and then just kind of get going and you can see that this just cleans it right up and then I can actually come in from this angle here and since I have them in a grid formation I can clean this out right here and I'll move over here and I'll just get this section of weeds right here and I just basically have eliminated all the weeds in that little section now again I'm going to come through here and like I said you're going to want to pull these weeds out don't don't leave them there because those are all weeds that the the basically the rake has not cut the weeds like they said it would basically it kind of just almost pulls them out it's a little weird it does cut some of them but for the most part that I'm seeing it does kind of just rip the roots right up see more roots there they weren't really cut they weren't really severed they're kind of just ripped right out of the ground all right so what we're going to do something pretty fun so you saw it in between the plants and seemed pretty effective and that's because it was I really love how it works in between the plants and that's kind of the icing on the cake for me however I've seen a lot of people express a need for something to clean up weeds in i aways I have very few of them because I plant pretty close together however I do have some so I saved a little strip here about four and a half five feet in in length and I want to see how long it takes me to get them relatively probably 99% weed free so I have a timer here I have my my mature temper hula rake hula hoe saddle hoe whatever what you want to call it and I also have my trusty plastic rake here so what I'm going to do is I'm going to hand Cindy the I'm going to hand Cindy the timer here and when she says go I'm going to I'm going to get started here we're going to see how long it takes to get this done now a spot this size from my experience in weeding generally takes about 15 minutes to we just this five five feet to me about 99% weed free like we talked about re Cindy are you ready all right and we're going make sure you gets a nice close-up stuff this stuff right here and mind you this is effortless this is just effortless get in between the potatoes here a little bit of that a little bit of that alright that's done take the plastic break and time now you just saw it live right there what normally would take me about 15 minutes took me 53 seconds now again that is to get it 99% weed free I'm telling you what everything else here if you see some weeds that are kind of sitting on the ground they've already been chopped this is amazing I mean what the rake didn't get you can walk back and pick up if you really want it to be 100% weed free this is just amazing you know like I was surprised when I first saw the results I'm a little winded but you know it's just every single time it is effortless clay soil now again this is pretty loose soil which probably helps a little bit so results may vary on that type of time but for what I've seen I'm completely sold this is a all-purpose rake slash hoe and I'm telling you what so I love it the last thing that I want to do is I want to give kind of a all-around rating score just some some things like I said that I was going to do so one of the pros is obviously that it's durable it's obviously everything in more than I thought it would be definitely surpassed my expectations one of the downsides is after a full day like I said not having that handle there is a must-have I I just honestly I'm probably going to take some some wrap because I can't stand it after a while it just robs my hands raw but again that's that's me for for a small gardener that doesn't have as much space that's only doing it for 15 minutes or so you shouldn't have a problem but for something like me it spends a whole day out in the garden I'm gonna need something the next thing is the length this was a big con for me I would really love for True Temper to come out with either alternate lengths or something with an extension because I'm telling you what I'm six foot three not everyone else is 6 foot 3 I get that but for me to really get good leverage I'm down here and my back is still bent as you can see I'm not lying here to get really good leverage my back is bent and if I'm Beth my back spent for 3-4 hours it's kids to be really uncomfortable I would really love to have you know something up here something up here it's a little taller you know something I could just I could still get the same angle but I didn't have to bend over as far just a little kind of a nitpick there but honestly if I had to give it a five star I would I would really have to give it a five star I could not I could not rate it any less than a five star this is like a must-have tool for any gardener especially for the my gardener crew this garden was weedy tell me what it is a beautiful beautiful weed free garden so that is a that is a plus now the very last thing that I would love to do is I would love to suggest you to go out and try it yourself you know I'm not being paid by True Temper to put this out here but I'm telling you what you saw here and the quality of this product it's amazing and I would seriously suggest it because this was the first time I ever tried this product I've seen a lot of people using it I thought you know what what the heck let's try it and blew my expectations out of the water and I will not be gardening without
