i'm on lake superior doing some trout fishing and getting from the snow covered ice to the clear ice you can really see that there's some good strong black ice air see through ice is the strongest ice frozen way out there i've got a cold winter here in northern ontario and this spot is good and locked up oh there it is it is shallowly here the ice it's still safe i have that picks around my neck six to eight inches you can see the fish have you got one minus 15 right now but pretty pleasant [Music] and because of the size potential of fish on lake superior i've got my heavy duty ice fishing reel and rod this is a size 30 pflueger president and a 40 inch medium heavy jason mitchell elite mac and handle a big late trout first drop what do we got 37 feet of water got extraction tools very handy if i'm going to release a fish important to get them back down quickly so they don't freeze their eyeballs and slime don't freeze and a bonking stick if i get any keepers if you can hear the ice popping like that the ice cracking and popping like this isn't inherently unsafe just it's this bright hot sun warming the ice and causing it to expand and it'll contract overnight that's all that's happening doesn't mean it's gonna break i spent a lot of days on the ice steer clear of anything you're unsure of nothing doing over there hole number two i get this area cleared off and then flood it a little bit and be able to watch the fish just have to catch one first oh no no see that line shooting back down it just shot up that's a fish oh dang it's so exciting watching them shoot off bottom but so disappointing when they shoot back down oh shoot oh i just saw yeah come on come on come on oh no no he had it he had it no no no no dropping down back down i didn't play that well i was just taking out the underwater camera to put it down the second hole come back please you gotta be kidding back i just went to go put it down again and came off bottom and then just dropped right back down that looks like a bit better mark there this is the joy of fishing in deep water is watching them shoot up on the sonar however you can't fish deep water for most spiny raid species like walleye because the pressure change will kill them barotrauma drop this down keep an eye on let's this if i can see anything on the camera let's take it to the bottom pretty flat and featureless but there fish here so fish on the on the screen what is that probably a lake trout oh it's on the camera come on come on still there come on gotta be ready for a hook set here i'm just gonna lay it still sometimes you can overwork the lure come on okay a little bottom contact come on make my day buddy please oh it's just hanging out let's see if i just oh that's so cool it's so fun to have the camera down there you ditch that i don't seem to be committing to it go with this jig fly from mighty mitch and jungle joe kind of a local favorite made locally too i'd love to get a strike on the underwater camera but really the most effective technique oh two of them i think is to reel up and get them to chase let's see no going back down nope not gonna chase not this time oh oh shoot just got nipped come on getting so close today okay he's coming up real away from him yeah no no no no it's so painful i might have to downsize they don't seem to be getting a [Music] the hook point has been updated please check it on the map fish on and there is some solid weight there oh boy keep that rod bent there is some good weight there probably a lake trout let's see oh it's not that big but not that big at all but hey it's actually a small lake trout holy all right it's belly hooked which means i can't keep it poor guy at least he's not bleeding release him right away awesome made my day thanks buddy and there he goes back down yeah i recently learned unless a fish is hooked in the mouth you can't keep it which is uh interesting i guess it's to prevent snagging intentional snagging yeah it's too bad i couldn't keep it would have been perfect for dinner but yeah it may not have taken it in the mouth but it made it some kind of attack on this mighty mitch and jungle joe jig fly makes sense why it felt so heavy now it was coming up sideways it's it feels so much bigger than if they're coming up nose first and they're a lot more aerodynamic that way got these gloves thanks so much trent collins and labrador city and he sent them for ice fishing because they're waterproof and still warm fantastic i didn't have them on for that fish but they're perfect fish cruising off bottom come on hit come on no i think it's dropping back down oh nope still there still there come on i try to play it so they chase up you know and trigger those predatory instincts but i'm at the top here so okay zach just popped by for a visit and he brought me a little beverage what a guy thank you sir cheers very much cheers [Music] more so much more bliss [Music]
