honk you'll receivers have received a bad rap lately for bad DSP chips and rightly so because they were failing left right and center if you've got one that's got no sound chances are it's a DSP chip this failed and this video I'm going to show you how you can go about troubleshooting and proving that that's what the problem is this is an Akio TX NR 8 0 9 AV receiver complaint on this is it has no sound power note that the speaker relay is not turning on this is a common fault and it doesn't matter what model of Onkyo receiver you have if it's from the era with the bad DSP they're affected across the board I have a non Keogh that has the same failure and I fixed mine a couple of years ago doing what I'm going to show you on this one but this one's a clients unit so I won't be sending it back to him as repaired doing this but we want to prove that what the fault is and then if he decides at that point that he wants to proceed then I'll look into if I can't even find one of these DSP chips because I know they're getting very hard to get these days but anyway as you can see nothing is working on here speaker really he's not clicking so let's get the top off of it by flipping some bugs over Eastside I didn't even hear the really click so I'm feeling those dreaded DSP problems one of these that are so common on these units so this is a Zowie input where is observing on this should be the observer input yeah there's the really didn't click in or anything a real common problem on these is this DSP chip this causes more problems on these Onkyo units and probably pretty much anything else [Music] we can use a heat gun or even the halogen lamp but tell us whether the DSP these Texas Instruments DSPs were a lot of problems on many many of these uncle amplifiers I get my bike Bob well we're gonna set it on there just let it bake for a few minutes and if the sound comes back on then we'll know that the DSP is what the fault is on this one so I'm gonna pull a bunch of thumbs down for this I'm just going to prove that this IC is bad because the speaker's won't kick in and typically what happens on these is one of two things either the bond wires and turn off to the chip fail and it fails due to heating and cooling or it's a BGA connection underneath it one of the two now I fixed my own amp this way both about three years ago and it ran for almost three years before I started having problems with it a game I haven't fixed to the game since using the heat lamp I'm using another amp right now and at some point I may even going change the DSP but let's just let's just put this lamp on here we're gonna knock this thing cook for a few minutes and then see once it gets good and hot whether it's fixed the problem and if the sound cuts in after doing this then we know that the failure on this one is a DSP chip and the get in touch with the owner we'll see what he wants to do from what I understand these DSP chips are getting fed a fairly hard to get and whether we can get one or not I don't have an air station to change one although I could probably do it with a with a heat gun or maybe if the guy wants to spend enough money on this thing I'll invest in an air station if I can get the DSP but well let this thing cook here is I say I've did this to my own years ago my own receiver ran for about three years before I started having problems with the game and I haven't done it again I haven't I haven't reheated mine I took the receiver out of service because I had another one to put in place of it that one touch what's still working so well I'll deal with my own at some point and see if we can get my own one get a new DSP chip in it but we'll let this thing bake for a few minutes here normally on at the single for five to ten minutes you get good and hot and then turn the power off to the lamp let it sit and cool down before I move it because it's going to get that chip hot enough to melt the solder below it and we'll see if it works oh standby and all you guys ready to hit the thumbs down button saying that this is not a proper repair again I've done it for people I don't charge but I'm doing this type of thing because I say it like this is this is a temporary repair it could last a week it could last a year you know unless we change the chip but again this is just the troubleshooting technique to determine that this is what the fault is so it's been cooking here for a couple minutes we'll turn the power off here on the lamp and we'll let this thing cool for a minute won't take long then I'll apply power to the power to the aventine and we'll turn it on and see if we get any sound if we get sound the chip is the what's the fault is [Music] there's the fault there's the fault there that bloody chip is bad so that's how you can troubleshoot I mean this this may fix this for a while just doing what I did this may fix it because I did this on my say I did this on my own audio and it lasted for almost three years it was 2015 oh actually did last three years to think was like May 2015 when I did it and it started acting up again around around December of 2018 I started having problems with it but I had been given another ocular receiver which was almost identical so I just swapped the receiver out because somebody had given me one that worked so I just swapped out the receiver my mother singing about five feet away from me waiting for me to actually get in there and change the DSP chip some day which I if I can get what I will anyway now we know what the fault is on this one I'm gonna end this here troubleshooting 101 akio bad DSP chip when you get ones that have no sound it's that one that's the chip you got to change okay yeah guys it closed up so you can get the part number off it but it's the DSP chip it was made by Texas Instruments it's a d8 3 0 k 0 1 3 8 z k 84 that's the chip that causes all the problems on all these on quino's if you got an Onkyo and you got no sound and it's got that chip in it that's the fault thanks for watching
