today we're taking flight on what turned out to be one of the most beautiful flights of my life we're flying this air greenland-8 from nuke to keflavik Iceland in the jump seat and we're stopping off at kulusic in East Greenland on the way a gravel Runway serving a tiny settlement there you're not going to want to miss this let's go [Music] all right folks it's time to leave Greenland and we're at the nuke airport it's already something like eight in the morning but as you can see it it gets light very late here you see a little bit of light peeking over the mountains there some kind of big Sunrise but I don't think it actually comes up until a little past 10 a.m anyway we're here at the edge of the Airfield and it's windy and cold but not as cold as it's supposed to be at this time of year we're leaving Greenland today not by the traditional route going by kangaroo suac and Copenhagen on the A330 but instead we're headed to Reykjavik that's a dash 8 flight I think it's got to be one of very few transatlantic-8 flights and today's flight to keflavik is extra special because we're going to be stopping in kulusuk which is a gravel Runway on the east coast of Greenland so should be very interesting to see I've never landed on a gravel Rumble before and I guess it'll give us a chance to see East Greenland a little bit which I've seen from high up in the air but never low to the ground about an hour and a half to get over there and then another hour and a half or so over to keflavik it's surely a very unique Dash 8 flight [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] number two wonderful person so it's certain things thank you Starbucks [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] covered lining up from interior printers here you can see we're taxiing down the old Runway that was operational until November we then make a little turn to get ourselves over to the new Runway that was just opened eventually they'll be extending this new Runway further so that it can handle larger aircraft including the new A330 neotuk which we flew in on just a few days prior ities [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] it's not true [Music] [Music] one problem with taking off out of nuke is very quickly you're surrounded by so much beauty that it can be difficult to decide where to point the camera [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] I love seeing how even though these Pilots are flying around Greenland every day and have done so for years they're still taking photos of the sunrises and incredible Landscapes as for me I've been on several of these Dash eights around Greenland and it definitely hasn't gotten old yet foreign [Music] Tango 590 which goes through back two and Aston and then over to the NDB Delta Alpha over at goodness so we'll be Crossing um there it's like a direct flight from from level two five so capture yes [Music] yes [Music] or V6 to one of the initial approaches assist Ed thank you I'm not really clear whether we can see uh the dice it's old radar stations from the Cold War you can really see the ice sheet no with the light oh yeah Marco tells me about some of the challenges of flying into greenlandic airfields for example at narsar swak in the south and this hill is like 1300 feet and if you follow the puppy you'll fly right into it here and the Leo jet is just around here so you have to be over 1700 when coming here and then follow the pavis afterwards but it's really beautiful when you fly over there and it's good weather see that little spot of light that's one of the dies Marco mentioned earlier the Cold War Era radio stations set up to give an early warning of Soviet bombers approaching over the pole if you're interested in reading more about them I'll stick a link in the description a friend of mine across the ice cap on snowmobile and they went into to have a look at this wow one of our colleagues was down there with a helicopter he brought back an option and after a little while the ice sheet gives way to the mountains of East Greenland that means it's about time to start descent into kulusuk wait till you see this place this whole approach to use probably one one and wait 15 650 clubs 35 about 92 Target 102 we have two one one eight speed set to navigate stop tell us uh missed approach to the visual questions that will be bleeds off because of ground Runway ever yep do you get special training for gravel Runway not special training but we have to treat the aircraft a bit differently again prepare us to stop yeah but it's 1199 meters so it's pretty low yeah oh I love it when it's like this so much to see and no turbulence and oh just a nice thing yesterday I was thinking while I was driving home that well that was what we get paid for you know Gusty winds downdrafts and turbulence and like Landing where the the weather is challenging and doing it safely 471 show information passing 105 .
