[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] life is really strange i always wanted to learn japanese traditional carpentry but i didn't have much luck finding a place to learn but one day i was doing my laundry in tokyo and just outside the laundromat there was an advertisement for a japanese carpentry school after having a friend call the school i was told that i couldn't attend because my japanese language skill was too low but as fate would have it i would still get the chance to learn some japanese [Music] carpentry [Music] so [Music] [Music] yes yeah is [Music] yeah it's like a ribbon so thin it's a sharp tool [Music] you can probably write on paper means to chamfer or put a little bevel on this edge it helps to prevent the wood from splitting when you're sliding the two pieces together it's a smooth surface it's sharp it's not good [Music] [Music] come on so [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Music] foreign oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Music] we're on location here in gunma you can see gunma behind me or a part of guma guma is a big prefecture they're bringing in the wood right now they're staging it on the work site the work site's real real small there's not much space to actually walk around but they have the scaffolding all set up i'm assuming they have it built so that they can actually build up 5 five tiers of this pagoda they cleared a lot of trees which is uh allows for the people from the village to actually see the pagoda in the distance it's gonna be real nice it's gonna be real interesting but the the roads are very narrow coming up here very tight so i don't really know how they're gonna bring up the rest of these pieces because they're gonna continually get bigger and bigger and bigger so we're gonna see how that works out they have a concrete slab that was poured i guess a couple days ago or a couple weeks ago so that's all ready to go and it has screws sticking up so you can actually fit the foundation right on top and it's ready to go [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
