TOYOTA SR5 - Marty’s Truck in 'Back To The Future'

time is back to the future and today we're not gonna see a delorean we're gonna see a toyota sr5 our buddy todd has one and it's built back to the future style so let's go check it out all right i think i think that's the house yes it is let's make a u-turn here it should be in that garage right there let's go find todd i was expecting the street to say hill valley estate back to the future reference hey my man what's up todd how's it going buddy good to see you man thanks for having us the lance our photographer hey is it over here yes you open how do we get in there all right you guys ready you got two dudes this is awesome man oh my gosh i love them both this it takes you back man i feel like in 1985 looking at this truck right now this is awesome [Music] hey my name's todd big car fan love the movie back to the future so i'm going to show you the two that i have [Music] [Music] todd thanks again for having us man i really appreciate it absolutely thanks for coming out so when did you get this it's an 87 right when did you get this i've had this one for about four years now and was it did it come back to the future style i know you're a huge fan of the movie you decided to build it back to the future stuff no it didn't look anything like this it was a gray color it actually had a camper shell on the back and it looked nothing like it does now i mean you and i met a couple years ago and i i fell in love with this when i saw it for the first time because you see back to the future everyone sees the delorean but as we've seen the original movie the truck comes by and marty mcfly just points to that truck and i think every kid fell in love with the truck during that movie yeah the famous line was whoa check out that four 4x4 so tell me more about it what did you what'd you do to it so what happened was somebody broke out the back window on the camper shell i'd always wanted to do a back to the future replica had the truck it just wasn't there yet windows broken got to do something so i figured that was the best time i would chant i was going to get took the camper shell off started sourcing some of the parts it but it just takes a while and then did a whole complete color change a lot of interior restoration and turned out and here we have it so it's an 87 so the movie do you know this backstory on the first truck yeah so the the one in the movie was actually an 85 they raffled it off after the movie believe it or not the owner traded it in in 1986 for a corvette did he really for a corvette somebody bought that from the dealership in new hampshire they kind of drove it around northeast the salt whatever got to it rusted out doesn't exist anymore so that's gone so back to the future two and back to the future three they're using the 87 they're using this year right kurt well i think that's still an 85 also okay but they had to modify it so somebody at the film studio owned one they consigned it from him modified it to look like the one from the first movie but there are little subtle differences like can we see the inside yeah all right let's pop this thing open oh my god look at the cassette that's right there in the center all right tell me what you did to the interior of this because the so the as what is you know what sr5 stands for yeah sr5 stands for sport rally 5. it kind of started out with the early 80 trucks and it was when they got the five-speed transmission and this in the sr5 this was when it comes to the toyota trucks back in the 80s this was top-level this was the top of the line this was what you have now is the trd pro edition so tell me more about the interior of the truck what do we look at inside here so source the the cassette player had an aftermarket cd player um the dash you know believe it or not there's not many companies that make reproduction pieces for these so you're really just at the mercy of people parting out their trucks and selling anything so it's pretty hard to find a lot of these interior parts here but this i mean the the the interior of this is in great condition was it like this when you got this the cloth seats the cloth flooring you have the the dual lights which i know is part of the sr5 package that's a little extra when it comes to the toyota trucks and then this is the the extended cab or the extra cab and for the uh the sr5 it's just what extra space back here no you can't but no one can sit back no yeah just kind of storage shelf you know put maybe your tools back in you know back in the 80s if that's what you did you put your little toolbox back there i mean to have this car if anyone you know a fan of back to the future and to see this truck i mean to have something like this when you're driving it how many people are coming up and saying i want to buy it i want to go for a ride all the time like if i'll go in the gas station to get a drink i'll come out people are just waiting to talk to me about it because a lot of people they had a truck like this in the 80s you know what i mean when they were in high school college this is what they wanted and so a lot of people kind of have an attachment to these and then you put in the movie aspect and it just kind of combines the two it has to be the most famous toyota in a movie i can't think of any other toyota that's more famous from a movie than the sr5 no absolutely this is definitely it and what's great you think about it too so we're in the 80s and they're putting the movie together and they're researching okay we can go chevy which is awesome we go forward which is awesome they knew that this truck was the truck the guys wanted back in the 80s so that's why they went with it no that this definitely put toyota on the map i think okay now you have uh more than one toyota here behind us this is i didn't know you had this this is a surprise to me this is also an 87 yeah this is an 87 so this is the original 4runner believe it or not not many people know that the original 4runner had the removable top you know you think of the 4runner now it's kind of a big suv kind of the soccer mom vehicle yeah it used to be it started out as an off-road rugged truck like this that had the removable top and so these are getting very difficult to find how many of these are in existence do you think it's an 87 and is there anything special about this one besides the fact that you have a 1987 4 runner in your driveway yeah so this is a an incredibly limited production turbo model and how many of the turbos were made back then you know best guess is they made maybe one to two thousand of these total uh and by the best estimates those that are left on the road or maybe 200 or less whoa so this is something rare right here yeah i notice on the dash here the turbo would that actually light up when turbo kicks in it does when you hit boost it'll slowly light up that turbo gauge that's like a nintendo game from the 80s exactly it's got these really limited uh turbo stitch seats though even all the turbo models didn't come with the turbo stitch seats i love when you have a car like this and then you have something even extra rare and you said there's maybe 200 out there i'm sure this slashes that number in half oh ab definitely definitely that's great okay um test drive if i had to pick one you know i got you know i got to go with marty me fly over here absolutely can we go for rides absolutely let's do it i don't know where you're gonna sit though lance because an extra cab there's not much room for you all right here we go yeah we have some pads there this truck is indestructible oh yeah i think it would be fine these were the work trucks of the 80s yeah this thing you couldn't you couldn't destroy this thing man you actually learned to drive a manual transmission with this truck oh you did yeah so i didn't know how i bought it from a guy on craigslist i said uh this might sound weird can you just drop it off in front of my house so we barked it out here and i just slowly like started you know filling out the club taking little trips around the block go a little bit further a little bit further so still rusty don't judge me no problem what what a car to learn how to drive stick in though man right but gotta put this it actually works oh this thing gets better and better here we go ac too ac believe it or not yeah working ac in las vegas yeah oh we're living in luxury up here sorry lancer in the back so then i i had heard that so after the filming of back to the future and back to the future three this toyota was eventually stolen and we found his way down to mexico and they're using it to run drugs in mexico using it to run drugs the owner painted it like a bright orange i think they were a denver broncos fan so it was a little bit of orange some blue you wouldn't recognize it at all as being the truck from the movies somebody found it uh notified a family up in massachusetts and they went in bought it and had it restored did they really that's great how often do you drive this i try to get out once a week make a run to the gas station grab a drink maybe go through the low line it in and out or whatever my kids love driving it and these are gaining more popularity um you showed me one that sold on bring a trailer for what about 50 000 it's sold for uh yeah exactly they're they're really starting to creep up in value the back to the future replicas are um but yeah they're selling right around 50 000 or so for decent condition back to the future replicas what other cars are there from the movies you have the delorean yeah you've got this you've got the one that needles attempts to race marty in which is a ford some kind of ford truck that's right for the 50s that's right so we need the truck and then isn't that the scene where marty mcfly decides not to race yeah and if he would have raced our car pulls out and he would have t-boned that car do you know what car that was it was uh putting me on the spot here the rolls-royce yes it was yes it was watch one pull out here in front of us it'll be great lance goes flying we're just like marty mcfly in the movie we're not gonna go racing we're gonna drive it respectfully and then we'll go camping that's right throw a couple sleeping bags in the back it was what uh um so we lived in hill valley but was the toyota dealership uh it was uh staedtler toyota toyota as far as i know that doesn't exist it's just part of the movie if you're a toyota or the owner dealership wouldn't you change it to statler oh absolutely that's unlimited advertising right there yes so yeah these were actually the first routes i took when i was learning to drive just slowly get out a little bit more go down to the cul-de-sac turn around and drive around here there's some nice your neighbors have some nice cars oh definitely especially probably some of these uh newer newer homes right in here i like to the the vent windows oh these things are fantastic game changers like believe it or not they are very efficient on the freeway they bring they do they bring the air they should bring these back yep would you sell it you know i thought about that if somebody at the toyota dealership offered me a brand new top of the line toyota tacoma trading for this would i do it i don't think that i would really i don't think that i would just because you can't find these anymore yeah you can't put a price on you really can't but what's comical is if you park this next to one of the newer full-size trucks it just it dwarfs it and it's just amazing how how big the new trucks are yeah but something about this though the look the front kind of squared off the front end of this car i mean you can't go wrong oh it's really aged well for being 35 years old i mean this this is a truck that you can probably be proud to drive and own so the original back to the future came out in july of 1985 so that's what how many years 37 years or so now 37 years ago so we're filming this in july it's 115 outside black truck lance you're today's hero sitting in the back there like that buddy we offered the skateboard but [Music] four wheel drive here take it off road uh once i took it up to uh up cruises started cruising up charleston went way up high in there actually didn't even need it this thing's like a mountain goat even without the four wheel drive it it'll climb anything perfect dude todd that was awesome man thank you so much this is an iconic truck and spend some time really appreciate it buddy thanks for coming
