with the 320 horsepower mark for Supra going out of production nearly 20 years ago a lot of people were a little upset to find out that the new 2020 Supra only makes about 15 horsepower more in that many years well what happens if the manufacturer drastically under states those horsepower numbers from the factory what happens if the new 2020 Supra actually puts down more horsepower and torque to the wheels than the manufacturer states is supposed to come from the crank that's a pretty big disparity well it just so happens that the first stock mark 5 Supra was just put on the dyno let's find out what those numbers actually are [Music] [Music] I can't forget to mention that today's video is the second of four giveaways that we're gonna be doing these giveaways are done by me putting a redemption code for an Amazon gift card on the screen at a random point in this video so make sure to watch the video make sure to watch it all because who knows when it's gonna pop up and as soon as you see that code be the first one to get to Amazon and redeem that code and you'll be the winner if you missed it on this one there's still two more coming after today's video so make sure you're subscribed make sure you hit the notification bale and maybe you can be the winner by the way I also don't want to disappoint you guys who are looking for more BMW content I've got some huge plans coming from my BMW that will be coming up in the channel soon it's also going to be the biggest changes ever happen to this car that I've done so far now back to the main point of the video so here I'm going to be talking in terms of US dollars the MSRP for 2020 Supra is around 51,000 dollars when you compare that cost with its competitors it kind of seems like for that much money you should get a little bit more than 335 horsepower most of their competitors that are similarly priced have more horsepower than that at least like a hundred more horsepower and that's quite a bit so when you look at the Supra vs. as other cars that are in the market it does seem like at least on paper that you're getting kind of screwed with only 335 horsepower at full sit down now let's resume the game but I say on paper because in actuality the 335 horsepower and 365 foot-pounds of torque is drastically underrated in fact so iota actually stated that they wanted to benchmark the Porsche Cayman for the competitor for the new Supra and the Cayman is available with up to 365 horsepower so 30 more than you can get in the Supra and yeah I would personally expect to that in the 17 years should win the mark for suit for a stock production there should be a little bit more than 15 more horsepower in that many years if the car is going to stay competitive and if it's just gonna make sense to buy so with all this talk about crank horsepower versus wheel horsepower we need to really nail down what the differences are between those and why they may be different so when the manufacturer states the horsepower and torque numbers those are typically well it just in the industry are stated as crank horsepower numbers that means how much horsepower the engine produces at the crank without any drivetrain loss now speaking of drivetrain loss the deficit thing crank and wheel horsepower is instead of being the horsepower that's put down at the crank this is the horsepower that is now being put down through the tire to the ground you may not think that those numbers should be that different but if you think about it that power has to go through a transmission it has to go through the drive line it has to go through the wheels that are rotating mass and then to the ground and if a car is all-wheel drive it has twice the drive line that it has to go through and so it loses just that much more horsepower you can typically find with rear-wheel drive between the 10 and 15 percent course power and torque loss between the crank and the wheels so when a manufacturer states that this car should have 335 horsepower what you would expect to the wheels is gonna be 10 to 15 percent less than that on the flip side when somebody does take their car to a dyno and they get these crazy wheel horsepower numbers you could expect that the number to the crank should be 10 to 15 horsepower higher than what you're putting to the wheels for instance check out this Beamer [Music] 583 so this BMW here basically just for the ease of math will say put down about 600 horsepower to the wheels and six hundred foot-pounds of torque to the wheels so what does it mean that this car puts down to the crank so in other words I guess what would the manufacturer say if they made this car this way stock that this car should have for its horsepower and torque numbers with all-wheel drive it's a little different it's probably safe to say that all-wheel drive these days loses between I would say 15 and 20 percent horsepower loss let's just go on the low side of 15 percent loss if we go off that 15 percent that would mean that this 600 wheel horsepower car is actually making to the crank about 690 almost 700 horsepower so like I said if this car were to be advertised from the factory with horsepower numbers they would say not that it has 600 but that it has 690 or 700 horsepower so you can see that with that example there can be quite a big difference between crank horsepower and wheel horsepower numbers as I mentioned before with this first stock superbeing dyno'd there is quite a big disparity between the number that the manufacturer is stating and the number that the car actually put down to the wheels but this isn't really a rare thing these days in fact most German manufacturers state their numbers closer to what the wheel horsepower numbers are instead of what the crank horsepower numbers are let's look at some examples of cars that have been drastically understated from the factory in the past so the 2019 BMW m5 competition the brand-new m5 competition it stated from the factory to have 617 horsepower and 553 foot-pounds of torque now remember this is supposed to be to the crank now Car and Driver actually put this new m5 competition on the dyno and what they found was kind of shocking so this car put down 617 horsepower to the wheels and 606 foot-pounds of torque to the wheels and this is again in all-wheel drive car now if we do that math again on an all-wheel-drive car that puts this BMW m5 competition over 700 horsepower to the crank now that's a huge difference between what the manufacturer is stating and what the reality is that is kind of cool because you're paying this money for what you think a car has four horsepower numbers but you're actually getting a lot more than you bargained for which is always a good thing a lot better than getting less than you bargained for I did mention that it's a lot of German manufacturers that are understanding their numbers but these days it's not really just the Germans there's a lot of even American manufacturers that are drastically understanding their numbers in cars that you might be surprised to find out about the doc-to-help can 707 legendary horsepower this was really the first mainstream vehicle we'll kind of mainstream that reached over 700 horsepower from the factory when it came out it's pretty wild to be able to understand that you can buy a car from the factory with a warranty that had over 700 horsepower a 707 it's a pretty big number what doctor was understanding it let's look at the real numbers the drive dyno tested the 707 horsepower Hellcat on a dyno and they found that this car puts down around 670 wheel horsepower that means that the 707 horsepower Hellcat actually is more like a 750 horsepower Hellcat and what's interesting is there was an interview with one of the guys from Dodge and where they said they got this 707 horsepower numbers was more for marketing reasons because it just sounded cool to say 707 but you know what about these other cars let's get into what the super actually put down I have seen that a lot of people are saying that they're disappointed in the horsepower numbers in the last video that I made about the Supra if you haven't watched it go ahead and click this card up here I talked about an exclusive interview that taught us on basically the lead developmental engineer had with a lot of automotive journalists and in the two days that they drove the new Supra taught us on said that not one person said that a super a needed more horsepower and with only 335 horsepower stated that seems like you know at least one person would have said this thing could have used more horsepower so maybe it has more than 335 horsepower maybe these disappointing numbers that we're seeing on paper are actually wrong so here's some dyno footage check it out [Music] so that right there might explain why not even one of the journalists complained about the Supra not having enough horsepower in case you didn't catch that the new Supra put down on this dyno on this day three hundred and thirty nine wheel horsepower and a massive 427 foot-pounds of torque to the wheels that means if we do this math that the Supra that supposed to be 335 horsepower is actually more like closer to four hundred horsepower and this three hundred and sixty-five pounds of torque car is actually more like five hundred foot-pounds of torque and what's crazy is we know that Todd asan and Toyota built this car to be modified so if you're gonna tune this thing and an easy 50 to 75 horsepower just from a tune is possible that means that you can have close to a 500 crank horsepower car just with getting a tune from the factory and probably will be close to 600 foot-pounds of torque when you take that into perspective this $51,000 MSRP is really a not that high for what you're getting for the car and one thing that I think is really crazy I mean obviously you guys can tell that I'm a BMW fan I own a BMW there's a freaking em power flag right behind me did you know that the new 2020 Supra is faster 260 than even that m2 competition the m2 competition is supposed to have over 400 horsepower and yet this 335 horsepower Supra is faster than that putting that into perspective you can buy a new Supra for cheaper than you can buy them to competition why not check out the Supra with all this being said all I can say now is that I'm really excited to start seeing these cars on the street and I'm really excited to start seeing these cars in people's hands who really want to tune them like the mark 4 Supra I think this car is going to make big number just gonna be really surprising to people and it's going to be a lot more capable than the car looks on paper and like I've mentioned before in previous videos if you guys are interested in more Supra or even BMW content make sure to stay tuned for the channel as soon as the super hits the dealership's I'm gonna be there filming it for you guys and I can't wait to personally get my hands on one with that being said guys what do you think about these horsepower numbers I mean this was only one dyno'd and obviously numbers vary from tyno to dino and from you know constitutes to altitudes or whatever but with the carpeting down this much I think that's pretty awesome and it's pretty exciting do you guys think this car is gonna be a great performer do you think it's gonna be underwhelming once it actually gets in people's hands let me know in the comments and I hope you guys all enjoy today's video if you did make sure to give it a big thumbs up and if you're not subscribed to the channel for some reason make sure to hit that subscribe button as well as a notification bell so that you guys don't miss an episode and also so that you have a chance at winning the next giveaway and I will see you guys in the next one
