Paris at the end of the 19th century was one of the most exciting places for printmaking it was where graphic design took the advertising industry by storm celebrity culture was born and the art of color lithography came into its own at the center of this print Revolution was honoree de toulouse-lautrec the Trek's work dissolved the traditional boundaries between the so called high arts and graphic design his designs brought artistic skill and critical attention to the medium of advertising and by mixing popular culture with commerce and artistry he was able to create some of the most memorable graphic designs of all time advertising laws in France changed in 1881 and because of this printed advertisements were allowed on the streets its cafe concerns cabarets and nightclubs were drawing huge crowds from the newly emerging pleasure-seeking middle classes popular venues like the Moulin Rouge the shot Noir and the folly Bergere now all wanted i catching promotional material the trick was a regular visitor at the Moulin Rouge when in 1891 he was given the prestigious Commission to create a poster for the venue the design he produced was fresh and striking he used areas of bright color and bold black outlines both inspired by Japanese woodcut prints which were fashionable in Paris at the time the repetition of the lettering and the huge scale of the poster meant that it was inescapable but perhaps his most inspired decision was to exploit the marketing power of the celebrity performers with 3,000 copies pasted across Paris the poster for the Moulin Rouge catapulted Toulouse Lautrec into the public spotlight these posters were so popular with the public that collectors began to take them off the walls almost as soon as they were pasted up lithography is often a collaborative process Toulouse Lautrec thrived on going into the studio and working with the professional printer assisting exchanging ideas and generally observing whether he was working in monochrome or working in color toulouse-lautrec made maximum use of all the mark making possibilities and all the technical innovations of the medium in just 10 years of printmaking the Trek had made a mighty cultural and artistic impression you
