world series the crowning jewel of baseball only the best teams win it but is that really the case in this video we break down all of the worst teams to win the world series let's get into it right now number five the 1987 minnesota twins starting off the list let's talk about the only team in baseball history that has won a world series while being outscored in the regular season the 1987 minnesota twins the twins offense was not the issue as they had four players combined to hit 125 home runs and they had the league leader in hits that season in kirby puckett the twins pitching is what would keep them from reaching their true regular season potential frank viola was the ace of the staff possessing a 2.9 array to go along with 197 strikeouts but he was the only starter on the twins to have an era below four their bullpens era hovered a 4.5 and their closer jeff reardon although managing to make the all-star team wasn't the most reliable to call upon when needing a close win their record at home was 56-25 but their road record was 29 and 52 big sheesh regular season baseball though and playoff baseball are two entirely different beasts once you get into the playoffs it's anyone's championship to win and the 1987 minnesota twins proved just that as they steamrolled the tigers in round one who had a 98-64 regular season record and and they managed to win two road games against them then the twins headed to the world series to face off against the saint louis cardinals since there were only two rounds of playoff battles needed to win the championship in 1987. despite winning 95 games that year the cardinals forfeited home field advantage in the world series to the twins because the rule at the time was that home field advantage would be flip-flopped between the al and nl every year and considering the twins were absolutely abysmal on the road this could have been the secret ingredient to their eventual world series win the twins proceeded to win all four of their respective home games this series and went on to beat the cardinals in seven games with their offensive powerhouse leading the charge and frank viola locking down games one and seven to bring home the glory number four the 2000 new york yankees when people think about the new york yankees of the 1990s and early 2000s they tend to think of teams defined by a healthy amount of talent on both sides of the ball and overall utter dominance however that was not the case for the 2000 new york yankees after winning the world series in 1999 the yankees headed into the 2000 season with all the momentum in the world the yankees had an 84 and 59 record heading into the final month of play but lost 15 of the last 18 games thus diminishing their final record to a measly 87 and 74 which was good enough to win the alice by one and a half games over the just as bad boston red sox they had one of the best hitting catchers in the game and jorge posada who cranked 28 bombs one of the best center fielders in the game in bernie williams who cranked 30 bombs and of course one of the best shortstops in the game in derek jeter who finished with a 339 batting average to go along with 201 hits and 22 steals like is the case for most on this list though the yankees were not bad because they're hitting but rather they're pitching on paper the yankees had a murderous row of starting pitching in the forms of roger clements andy pettit and david cohn but they didn't showcase their true caliber of start in the season as they combined for a 4.99 array and averaged 145 strikeouts of course the yankees still had the best closer of all time and mariano rivera as their trump card and trump card he was as he closed out all three of the yankees wins over the oakland athletics in the first round of the playoffs it was the yankees bats that earned them the second round victory in the playoffs against the seattle mariners as they outscored them 31-18 in the series and everyone remembers the world series as the only time in history where both new york teams would face off against each other but it was very anticlimactic as the yankees would beat the mets in five games the most paradoxical stat about this series is that despite the yankees pitching being horrific in the regular season it was their pitching that would secure them this championship victory as they won each game by two or less runs with derek jeter taking home the mvp and mariano rivera closing out the last two games of the series number three the 2014 san francisco giants finishing the year with an 88 and 74 record the 2014 san francisco giants had to overcome obstacle after obstacle to achieve their destiny of a world series ring first off let's break down their roster the giants did not possess a single power bad in their lineup and instead relied on small ball and getting timely hits to win most of their games their best hitter was their catcher buster posey who amassed 170 hits to go along with the team leading 22 home runs unlike other teams on this list it was not the bats that carried the 2014 giants but instead it was their pitching madison bumgarner the ace of their staff finished fourth and siam voting this year with a 2.98 year right to go along with 219 strikeouts the rest of their starting staff as well as their bullpen possess sub 4 eras thus leading to a lot of close wins in close games what makes them one of the worst teams to win the world series is how they finish the season the giants had a 43-21 record at one point leading the dodgers by 10 games in their division but finished the season 45 and 53 putting them six games behind la and forcing them to play in a single elimination wild card game the giants were turned to mad bomb who do a complete game shutout against the pittsburgh pirates letting them advance to the nlds to face off the 96 win nationals where they won the series in five games in which all five games were determined by three or less runs they then defeated the saint louis cardinals in the nlcs in five games in which all five games were determined by three or less runs finally they made it to the world series where they would beat the kansas city royals in seven games where madison bumgarner would go full super saiyan as he appeared in three games winning two of them and closing in another finishing the series with 21 innings pitched one earned run and 17 strikeouts number two the 2003 florida marlins most of the teams on this list made it to this list because they underperformed in a regular season or because they had big holes on either offense or defense although the marlins fit that mode they are also on this list because of the sheer unlikelihood of their championship run this was the 11th year in the marlins existence as an mlb franchise and they were still experiencing growing pains they fired their manager two months into the season after starting 16 and 22 and were experiencing lackluster starts from their prized players they then possessed a 70 and 63 record heading into the final stretch of the season where they would win 21 of their remaining 29 games finishing with a 91 and 71 record what got the marlins this far was their elite farm system that produced high caliber pitchers and hitters with players such as miguel cabrera carl pavano ivan rodriguez josh beckett aj burnett and the legend himself dontrell willis they had two hitters hit for 30 home runs so not a lot of power to be had but like most teams on this list their championship run was defined by winning close games getting timely hits and having a solid bullpen once the post season arrived now let's talk about their incredibly unlikely perhaps lucky world series run on the last game of the season the marlins narrowly defeated the new york mets four to three to clinch a post-season berth they then squared off against the 100-win san francisco giants who managed to win game 1 but then proceeded to lose three straight games two of them by one run and one of them by one run in extra innings in the third game of the series the giants were up 3-2 in the 11th ending when a routine fly ball was dropped by jose cruz which led to a marlins rally and a marlins walk-off victory to end the series there was a play at the play where ivan rodriguez was able to hold on to the ball and the tag after being steamrolled by jt snow thus sending the marlins to the nlcs the marlins now faced off against the 88 win cubs who had even less of a chance to make the world series than they did and florida squeaked out a victory in the series in seven games after being down three to one in game six of the series the cubs held a 3-0 lead in the eighth inning and with six hours to go the marlins managed to put up eight unanswered runs which was sparked by the infamous fan interference from steve bartman if bartman had not interfered the game would have been 3-0 still with two outs in the eighth but alas he did interfere and the marlins faced the new york yankees in the world series the marlins defeated the yankees in six games to win their first world series in franchise history on the backs of their elite starting pitching core what makes the 2003 florida marlins team even more of a meme is that they pretty much had the exact same roster in 2004 but finished with an 83 and 79 record missing the playoffs number one the 2006 saint louis cardinals it seems like i love the torch myself as i am once again talking about the saint louis cardinals on this channel but here it goes here is a mystifying stat about this team in 2004 the cardinals finished with 105 wins and got swept in the world series in 2005 the cardinals finished with a hundred wins and lost in the nlcs with basically the same roster as the previous years the cardinals finished the 2006 season with an 83 and 78 record you may think that the cardinals entered the postseason as a wild card entrant but no the team that did enter as a wild card entrant was the los angeles dodgers who possessed an 88 and 74 record this is just a testament to how bad the animal central was in 2006 as the cardinals won their division by one and a half games the cardinals main roster consisted of yadier molina who batted 216 david eckstein who was hurt for a majority of the season jim edmonds who was hurt for majority of the season and jason marquis who was tabbed as the ace of staff preseason finishing with a 6.02 era the cardinals did have albert pujols as their trump card when it came to offensive struggles and he and scott roland provided the one-two punch needed to win tough games you may think that the cardinals heated up late and thus brought that momentum into the postseason but it was actually quite the contrary they possessed a seven game lead in their division over the houston astros heading into the final month of play but only beat out houston thanks to big win in game 161 of the season against the milwaukee brewers the cardinals entered the postseason with the third worst record to ever do so in mlb history but that did not stop them from beating the 88 win san diego padres in four games and you know i'm not going to talk about the mets cardinals and lcs because i already have but just know there was a lot of luck in that series let's move on the cardinals then defeated the 95 win tigers in five games thanks to rookie anthony race retiring 17 tigers in a row in game one chris carpenter throwing eight shutout innings in game three and rookie and newly crowned closer and wainwright shutting the doors in games four and five on paper the cardinals may not be the absolute worst team but when you're talking championship title winners they definitely rank amongst the abysmal thank you for watching the episode of finish i hope you enjoyed this one i tried to make it as concise as possible considering i only put five teams on this list i could have made it 15 teams long with how bad the world series winners had been recently i mean the washington nationals they were pretty bad the atlanta braves they were not supposed to win it without their star player let's ignore all the facts leave a like a comment and a subscribe and have a great day a savage you
