than gullible people regardless of what we feel their existence is a reality the following 5 cults made headlines not just because of their strange beliefs but because they shocked outsiders and caused death to thousands of people directly involved with them these are 5 of the worst cults to ever exist number 5 movement for the restoration of the ten commandments of God the cult origins can group to a frenzy members sold possessions for cheap and scampered to spread the message however January 1st 2000 came and went pressured for results the leaders predicted a new date for the end march 17 mm we'd enough to the faded doomsday the group threw a huge celebration were three bulls and more than 70 crates of soft drinks were consumed by 10:30 a.m. the morning of March 17th 530 members including children started to arrive at church to sing and pray shortly after a large explosion was heard and the entire church was engulfed in flames every person inside was burned alive authorities people were killed a few days before the church fire and they were either poisoned or stabbed to death the death toll from the cult reached more than 900 people but some of the bodies and victims may Clara's house showing the boys tied gagged and caged in May 2007 the boys were finally rescued and Clara and Katarina were arrested but Bora fled the scene but was captured a year later while in foster care all three women were convicted and sent to jail Clare received nine years in prison her sister Catarina 10 and Barbara only got five years number three children of God founded by David Berg during the 1960's the children of God set up their first colony in Huntington Beach California those who joined were required to drop all their worldly items and then cut off their personal ties from their families once a person has been adopted into the colony they would take up a name from the Bible with their legal names kept secret from one another David Berg the founder referred to himself as Moses David Berg primarily communicated with his followers through writing letters in literary most of these were used for evangelizing and espousing that groups beliefs one of the things music professor Marshall Applewhite he joined the cult after suffering from a near-death experience in 1972 Bonnie Lou nettles his former nurse hired him to join Heaven's Gate members believed that our physical bodies were just containers which could be abandoned to reach a higher exists by 1985 nettles died an Applewhite didn't become active again until the 90s when he started recruiting after the discovery of the hale-bopp comet in 1995 the cult members believed a spaceship was hiding behind the comet to come and collect them on the night of March 22nd and 23rd 1997 39 active members of Heaven's Gate killed themselves by ingesting a mix of alcohol and barbiturates as their breath slowed down they then asphyxiated from the plastic bags they had wrapped around their heads they wore black shirts sweatpants and brand new Nike Decade shoes each one had an armband that read Heaven's Gate away team and all but three of the members that died out of purple shroud over them comparatively to other cults the death toll for Heaven's Gate is minimal however all these people died out of their own free will nobody forced them to drink the deadly cocktail but instead they willingly killed themselves believing the teachings of Applewhite and the spaceship to be real Applewhite believed in his teaching so much so that he got himself castrated to help minimize distractions to date the Heaven's Gate cult is non-existent according to former members Mark and Sarah King who are tasked to maintain the website and answer emails for the cult there have been no new members since 1996 number one Jones down the People's Temple it was a promised utopia for members of the People's Temple but instead their commune in Jonestown became such a living hell for its members it's hard to comprehend headed by notorious cult figure Jim Jones he was the self-proclaimed Messiah of People's Temple born May 13th 1931 Jones was a communist before becoming a pastor in 1952 a year later he rose to popularity as a faith healer and evangelist he soon put up his own wings of deliverance Church later changing the name to Peoples Temple by the 60s Jones moved his group to California continuing to expand his reach by preaching and opening branch in San Francisco where he became a prominent figure backed by officials he donated money and even lobbied votes for politicians by 1977 the group had grown in size reaching up to 20,000 this time unfavorable reports of father Jones's moniker from his members began to surface previous members complained that they were forced to give up their belongings their child's custody and their homes some were even beaten Jones discouraged romantic relationships and sex while he himself was a philanderer and engaged in numerous adulterous relationships with bad press and investigations mounting Jones's paranoid persona got to him he invited his followers to join him in Guiana where he promised they would live in Paradise by 1977 Jones with more than a thousand followers left the United States and flew to Guiana to build their paradise it was here that everything began to crumble instead of paradise the followers ended up being labourers as they were tasked to work the field and punishments were doled out to those who resisted their passports and medications were confiscated everyone was forced to attend late-night meetings where Jones would rant his ideologies armed Patrol was present in the area and family members were separated and encouraged to tattle on one another no phone calls or letters were allowed Jones but his time was increasingly becoming addicted to drugs and mentally unwinding as a final task he would even force mock suicide drills in the middle of the night thinking that the government was out to get them with pressures mounting and increasing reports of people held against their will US representatives Leo Ryan along with reporters and camera crews visited Jonestown in November 1978 to check on the situation to their surprise Jones welcome them with a party and even allowed members who wanted to leave to go back with Ryan the next day Ryan and his contingents including several des factors from Peoples Temple attempted to leave but were ambushed and killed in an airstrip by gunmen hired by Jones Jones then gathered his followers and told them soldiers would soon take over and or to them he ordered each person to stay at the pavilion and commit what he called a revolutionary act the nurses and parents then added cyanide valium and fruit juice powder to a vat of water and made the children and youngest members of the cult drink it first forming a single line each one of the remaining adults then took a drink of the poison laced concoction those who refused were force-fed the drink by the time the guineas officials arrived more than 900 dead bodies on the field greeted them and 276 of those were children as for Jones he was found in the camp's main ground surrounded by his wife and leading group members with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head so those are the five worst cults to ever exist those of us watching from afar might wonder why people would ever fall for or join a cult however the fact is a majority of those who join are simply looking for a new way of life and have no idea what they're getting
