to educate a man in mind and not morals is to educate a menace to society theodore roosevelt welcome back to the homestead y'all i thought i would take a few minutes and discuss the top five mistakes that i've made while building our pole barn so that way any of you that are plan on building a pole barn maybe you won't make those same mistakes that i made i wish i'd have known about this which some of you professional builders out there i'm sure know some of the mistakes i'm fixing to talk about you know not to make those mistakes but i didn't know that so i thought i would take a few minutes and share with you the top five mistakes that i've made and if any of you have built a pole barn out there and made mistakes please leave the comments below so that way the rest of us can learn and hopefully we won't make the same mistakes that you made and hopefully after watching this video you won't make the same mistakes that i made so i'll grab the camera and i'll take you around and show you the first three mistakes are basically the same they have to deal with the six by sixes but i'll take you around and i'll show you what i've done and why it happened or why i think it happened and what i could have done differently so let me grab the camera i'll take you around i'll show it to you and hopefully you won't make these same mistakes now first mistake i made was mixing old six by sixes with new six by sixes you can see this is an old six by six here this is an old six by six i have an old six by six here here here and here so you can see i used six different six by sixes that are old the ones on the ends were 16 footers that i already had and i use them and if you look at this six by six when i installed it it was perfectly straight and now it has curves in it so you can see it curves right there and curves right there so it's bowed from the sunlight and these 6x6s on on both ends did that almost immediately within a week of installing them they were warped or starting to work so what i thought is i would come in and i would put my tuba sixes and two befores on and part of my x bracing in and i thought that that would keep the six by six square but it didn't let me show you this one twisted at the top i don't know if you can tell on camera but starting right in there it starts to twist and twists all the way up so now i'm going to have to take i have a 20-foot stick of 2x2 steel and i'm going to have to drill holes in it put some lag bolts in the top and mount it as far up as i can and then i'll come back down to the ground back here and i'll put a stake in the ground and i'll slowly start moving that 6x6 around and hopefully i can get it straightened out but let me show you what it did here you can see hopefully you can see on that 2x6 it started you can see right there on that 2x6 it started pulling the 2x6 away from the 6x6 and this 2x6 has a lag bolt in it has three nails 16 penny nails and three three and a half inch screws and it's still twisted and pulled away another thing that this side six by sixes did the ones that i had for my tresses is out of the three i have on this side they all started to bow in every one of them started to bow in as soon as i realized that i took four by fours and put on them put some nails in the top and brought the four befores to the ground to keep them from moving in anymore but they moved in about two inches they bowed in i was able to get about an inch of it back by putting four by fours on them um 16 foot four by fours and putting pressure on them i was able to get them pushed back a little bit but that affected us when we put our trusses up for this is a 40 foot pole barn so inside the inside on your six by sixes needed to be 39 feet 1 inches so when we measured from the top of that one across for that truss to the top of that one we were at 39 feet so it was an inch bowed in so we had a lot of trouble getting that truss in so that's mistake number one is i used old 6x6s and new 6x6s now all the new 6x6s like this one on the corner that i used here did great okay mistake number two was waiting too long from the time that i put my post in the ground to the time i put my trusses up i think if i would have put my trusses up almost immediately even if i just put a few two by sixes on because i wanted to build my lean twos so i could put up these 22 and a half feet pieces of metal off my lean two so i didn't have to on a ladder so i built my lean twos first so it was a couple months from the time that i put my post in the ground to the time that i put my trusses up so i think my mistake number two was using uh number one was using old posts and new posts together number two was waiting too long before i put my tresses up my third mistake it was i did not realize when i ordered these tresses these they're 40-foot tresses this is a 40 by 60 barn that they were going to be heavy-duty the way they are now on my 30-foot one that i built the trusses are just this part here they come up and go down and they had a piece of angle iron that bolted on and then two by six one on each side that helped sturdy it when i received these i looked at them and they have all this metal in here these trusses are about 350 pounds a piece if i would have known that i would have used eight by eight posts instead of six by six posts so these posts here i would have used eight by eight just because of the weight it would have made them stronger that's my fault uh i did not ask for any kind of prints when i ordered them i just ordered 40-foot steel tresses and just assumed and when you assume things that's when i get in trouble so i try not to assume anything but i still do it even though i'm in my 50s now i still make mistakes and assume things but if i would have known they were going to be this heavy duty that they were going to be rated for 130 mile an hour winds i would have used eight by eights instead of six by sixes okay that's mistake number three mistake number four when i leveled the ground for our barn i knew we were going to build a 40 by 60 so i leveled 80 feet long and 50 feet wide because i knew on this side i was gonna pour concrete for an office but on this side i didn't level far enough i'll try to hold the camera level to the ground and you can see my tractor sitting at an angle it's about four or five inches uh if i had it to do over again i would have leveled all the way out and a couple feet past this lean-to okay so now what i'm gonna have to do is i'm gonna have to take my tractor and bucket and fill all this 60 foot lean to with dirt to level it back up so that was mistake number four mistake number five when we poured our concrete i knew i was going to acid stain it and then i knew i was going to seal it when we did the house i acid stained and sealed it and it come out beautiful and this floor came out great the acid stain did the sealer is where i made my mistake and i don't know if you can tell let me get it a better angle with the sun but i used a cheap sealer the sealer i used on the house was a hundred and ten dollars a gallon it was self leveling you put it on with an applicator pad this they said to put on with a roller and that it was self leveling so you wouldn't see the lines now on the house with the applicator pad itself leveled it looks like glass it's beautiful but on this and i don't know if you can tell on the camera you can see every line where i painted it on with a roller so now i'm gonna have to go back and strip all the sealer off this and go pay a hundred and ten dollars a gallon for the good sealer and redo it now the sealer i used on this i only paid fifty dollars a gallon for and i thought it would do fine since it was for the barn of course it's dirty the dogs have been on here after the rain i need to to wash it and re-mop it but i'm gonna have to restrip this entire floor and you can see i think this way a little bit better the lines from the sealer so if you're gonna seal concrete and you want it to look good you want it to look like glass spend the extra money and get the good sealer so those are my top five mistakes so far i may have to make another video if i come across more mistakes i'm fixing to get back on the roof today i'm almost halfway done now with putting my metal on and i'm going to get back on the roof and start getting some more metal up but like i said before if you built a pole barn and you've made mistakes please share it in the comments below so the rest of us can learn from each other's mistakes and not repeat them thanks for watching
