[Music] foreign first into the den a husband and wife Joel and Nikki Buckley hi my name is John the dream of painting a Greener picture in the world of DIY we really care about what we do okay let's do this the mission that we're on is honest ah that looks like environmentally friendly decorating interesting and they know exactly who they want to marry up to in their sustainable Enterprise so Dream Team would be Deborah and Stevie yep that Sarah could be quite interesting for us oh we did say so I didn't we yeah yeah yeah but we'll see sorry two computer all right [Music] hello my name's Joel my name is Nikki and we're from Eco Union limited we set a range of sustainable decorating tools to the trade and DIY and so we'd like to invite offers of 85 000 pounds for 10 of the company we purchased our business in 2019 and we're pleased to say that in the last two months we've turned over 149 000 so we sell a whole range of decorating products but we want to tell you today about paint trays I'm sure all of you've got these somewhere in a shed or a garage but unless you meticulously cleaned it last time you used it you're going to get spots of paint in there and then what's going to happen is you're going to put the new paint over the top you're going to roll up and down the wall and it's going to leave spots and splodges everywhere so we want to tell you about our Eco tray this is made of sugar cane gas and it's certified carbon neutral and unlike your plastic paint tray where you have to then go and wash it out putting the paint down the sink which is bad for the environment with these you simply leave the paint in the bottom of it and then when you come to use it again the paint's in there and it's got no flaking like you might have with the plastic one and you can use them again and again but if you decide you want to get rid of it you can just crush it and then it can just go into the dust bin there's a sample of some of our products in your boxes and if anybody feels like having a go at painting we've got aprons don't worry I'd love to yes [Music] sustainable decorating tools is the Business Journal and Nikki Buckley a pitching to the dragons look at that so there's no flaking at all that paint's not going to mix in any way with blue they're asking for 85 000 pounds in return for a 10 stake in their company and how many times do you recommend people to use it before they will dispose of it you can use it as many times as you need to or want to crafting Guru Sarah Davies has had her creative fix thanks Sarah that's great painting by the way great job but two casulliman is the first to brush up on the business yes hi very impressive pitch thank you thank you gotta Focus initially on how you got around to purchase in this business so we've bought and sold various businesses as well as done startups from from Grassroots and we've done sustainable businesses before we knew we wanted to buy another sustainable business and this business the one we found it it hit all those criteria and what what have you done to it since you bought it we have got a background in marketing so we wanted to Rebrand and so that's one of the main things that we did and we've added some skus and we've also looked at how we can get a better profit margin across the product range right what are you forecasting for the next 12 months so we are on the edge of signing up a couple of um large retailers dunnell Mill and jewson's partnership Solutions so we're expecting with this 12 months um 1.5 million so you're really gonna go for it and where you wear your base in Exeter yep can I can I I'm going to cut in Joel and Nikki I really like what you've done but I'm already up against it I think because so you've gone DIY you've gone Eco and now you've gone Devon [Laughter] do you mind I'm doing a poker face here do you mind so I'm gonna have to up my game the Jones is sustainably driven Duo appear to be ticking several of Deborah meaden's boxes but the dens environmental Trailblazer now wants to find out just how planet-friendly the pears paint tray really is can we talk about the product for a moment yes why is the tray carbon neutral because we've made it carbon neutral but how um yes offset and we've gone through every single aspect from the farm to the stores okay when you finish with it do you can't compost it because it's got paint in it yeah the difficulty is we can't say what type of paint is going to go on the tray from the end user so we are saying it's probably better you put it in your landfill where it will naturally degrade and then the layer of paint will just be left over don't buy degradable products cause a problem in landfill this is like a paper product so it's just going to naturally Mulch and just leave the paint behind yeah okay and what about the other products which bits aren't you happy with because there will be bits in here is the print yes okay I'll keep trying to catch you out even keep going what about the plastic Dusty so that's an oxy biodegradable dust sheets so that will be considerably better than any kind of version or just plain biodegradable dust sheet okay where is it mate the trays are made in China the big ass comes from Thailand have you explored the option to move the manufacturing to the UK one of the first things we did was took the manufacturing of of our main brush product to the UK yeah that was us that we would love to bring all of our manufacturers I don't know if you know but the um those black plastic paint trays the factory that I own we make the majority of the UK bulk production right and also the sales team that's that I'm day-to-day involved with that look after all of the accounts I can go to the same account and say don't buy the plastic pantries anymore guys I can sell you the best alternative right okay the entrepreneur's faultless presentation and impeccable Eco credentials spur Sara Davies to reveal she has the potential to produce the pears product at her fingertips and her big cell hasn't gone unnoticed by Stephen Bartlett when Sarah started telling you about her paint tray Factory I got the sense that she was um maybe flirting a little bit so I wanted to ask what is it you're looking for in a dragon you want a dragon that has obviously Deborah for us she's got the sustainability credibility but actually I think one of the things that's important to us is educating you know getting the message out and really working on the digital so you're saying you want me I'm saying that that is definitely an area that is important to to educating our customer base I think I think you've lost the plot because they want me you're making the wrong decisions already you know you're going to continue plans hang on one at a time don't worry about people it's like don't worry about pizza the new upstart come on give me a break let me let me teach you a lesson how it works because this is just noise right noise noise so let's get down to business I'm going to make you an offer and I can guarantee that I can get all your products into home base tomorrow so I'm going to make an offer for all of the money and I want 25 of the business vampire that are flashed as the longest serving dragon and the Den's newest recruit trade blows leading to an offer from Peter Jones does preferred investor Deborah meaden have an interest in entering the frame guys I love the product but I love why you're doing it you care about it and certainly in this whole sustainability piece there is a load of green wash going on there's a load of people just talking about it but it's the authentic ones that are winning through because the consumers okay I'm very savvy so you won't be a tall surprise to hear that I too am going to make you an offer and I'm going to offer you all of the money I want 20 of the business what thank you Deborah okay um I'll offer you all the money 20 of the business guys Pete's feeling it today isn't it yeah it's not very often we see this going on um right I think you are clearly very credible business people I think what you really need is specific help in this sector and I assume you've done your research and you know that my family business is painting and decorating so I would also like to make you an offer I would like to offer you half of the money for 10 of the business and just for total transparency the only dragon I would be interested in sharing with would be Deborah foreign s already on the table Joel and Nikki's position in the den is strengthening but couldn't offer from one of their preferred dragons master of marketing Stephen Bartlett helped Propel their Eco message to the masses you guys are everything that I'm looking for however they really dawned on me when I saw Zara's face that she has way more passion than I do for this product I don't do DIY I've not held a paintbrush since I was a kid and I was trying to do art badly and that's the only reason that I begrudgingly have to say that I'm out yep thank you thank you I love the product I love you guys so I'm willing to give you all of the money for 20 but I'm also willing share with Peter to make this really go if Peter wants I think that's really interesting um I love when good entrepreneurs come into the den and I love it when I'm the first to recognize that and make an offer and Spark the fury because if I'm really interested in something they're all interested but take away the bravado when you sum up what this product is you're walking in and you're walking in for Deborah meaden even I want Deborah meaden because Deborah has done an incredible job with DIY and Eco businesses and they've done so well and continue to do well let me say what I would like to do I would like you to do the right thing and pick Deborah and I do not want to go forward with it and I've never done this before because I just feel that everything that's right about your business there's one person that can make that dream come true and for that reason I'm out thank you for that Peter yeah thank you appreciate that do we go and yeah go to the back walk by that wall [Music] it's a den first as Peter Jones steps aside leaving the other dragons to fight for the spoils but it still leaves Joel and Nikki with plenty to mull over oh two casulliman and Deborah meaden are both seeking a 20 stake Sara Davies will put up half the cash for 10 if Deborah meaden will partner the deal but all offers are for double the equity the couple had hoped to part with [Music] so my first question Deborah would you be prepared to share with Sarah I would love to go into business with Sarah but I don't think it's this one and is there any movement on your offer no what you've got to think is that you need to get value out of me and to get value out of me I've got to feel like I've got value we feel like we want the dragon that we go with to um also feel like they were passionate passionate and getting a good return themselves oh just put us all out misery and tell Deborah congratulations we'd like to accept yeah come on excellent very much thank you Great Dragon yeah thank you thank you well done guys and leave the den with the 85 000 pounds they were seeking and with the greenest of dragons now in their Corner they're off to paint the town an ethical shade of red what just happened I don't know what just happened I have no idea that's amazing oh Maiden that one cut deep I would love to go into business with you but the truth of the matter is I wanted that one on my own Paul Robinson from Cumbria is the next entrepreneur hoping a dragon will join up with him on his exciting Journey that started from humble beginnings I left school with no formal qualifications and to be able to take a product that was designed in my garage at home and ends up being pitched to proper Venture capitalists is really exciting looks quite crafty this one reminds me of the airplane part it's a meccano set for grown-ups it was started in fun and it's just snowballed it's been a while right actually and there's one thing about Paul's product that he thinks will grab the dragon's attention straight away the company name is a bit unusual I'll quite like going into Ikea with my misses and looking at the Bonkers names that they call things so I was quite up for a Daft name hello dragons my name's Paul and I'm in the den today looking for 50 000 pounds in return for a 25 equity share in the Wanga flange most people will be familiar with this type of thing it's a little bracket it's on everything from Flat pack Furniture to civil engineering projects the problem with these are that it's limited to the angle that it's set 90 degrees in this case and the flat Edge being square if you change the material you want to build with to round this won't work you'll need a different bracket and if you want a different angle this won't work you need a different bracket so you end up with thousands of brackets wouldn't it be nicer to have a much more flexible bracket let me introduce to you the Wanga flange you take two longer flanges you can join any type of material to any other type of material at any angle and build any shape you want what we like to say is if you want to build it wanna flange on it thanks for listening and you've all got sample components so you can try and build a Wanga flange joint it's a well-constructed pitch from Paul Robinson do you need help there Peter I'm just trying to work out why I'm doing this he's offering to hand over a 25 stake in his construction Contraption company Deborah's got it straight away Lads you need us women to show you how to do it I've given up but it's fine jukes in return he's asking for fifty thousand pounds though I've done this what do I do with this you can look at look at it look at it yeah that's just a sample [Music] he's looking like nunchucks investment black belt Tage lavani is the first dragon to drill the entrepreneur about his company wow so Paul quite an interesting invention are you a builder by trade or I design and build geodesic dorms that's basically a geodesic structure there they tend to need to be tweaked a little bit so I was looking for a bracket that had a little bit of movement in it and that would lock solid okay so who would be a target market for this the interest that's been shown so far has been artists exhibition stand makers people building structures in the gardens gazebos a whole variety of things what I'm interested in is the home build garden structure yes Market it is something that is really current at the moment yeah people are looking for Home Offices they are looking for a little bit of space are these strong enough to build actual Garden structures that you could work in or use as an office space the CE rating would need to be in place obviously for anything that you walk inside or stand on so with the garden structure at the moment I don't think you'd be able to do that without testing would you no that's true so you haven't started you haven't started that you see that's a little bit of a worry because you've got no testing so we might learn but it's actually not usable it shouldn't be super difficult it's really over engineered so I don't see any problems with that and yes you could build much larger things with it there's no limit to the size you can build greenhouses Airport and Paul you're saying a Wanger flange can build an airport theoretically yes I haven't done it myself yet but there's no it's totally scalable despite the coupling Contraption not having any testing the sky's the limit when it comes to Paul's Ambitions for it but it appears too kasulum a has yet another idea for how the bracket could fly off the shelves Paul first that comes into my mind is how do you bring this into retail and I'm just wondering uh whether this could be adapted and actually become sets for children so kids can actually put these things together yes could you make little cars could you make rockets you could make rockets and it's best suited to geometric shapes but cool yes because of social distancing rules I can't ask for anybody to come and pinch me and I just want to know if this is real you seem to be a creative genius potentially like the first thing that we're looking at are these amazing objects yeah is is that not your business is to take what you've invented and then to sell and create these amazing things as opposed to thinking that you're going to use your Wanger flange to create an airport yes let me wind back from the statement about the airport let's deal with the immediate things that I've already built which with the small things if we stay with the small things I'm quite sure that people will make with one of flanges things that I've never thought about okay but if you could provide all the parts that comes with your Wanger plan yeah you're selling a Wanger fans clip for homemaking your own coffee table yes a little bit what I said Peter Then followed my idea and talked about other things yeah wow but um but now I did not follow your idea at all if you listen to what I said it's not even slightly what you said early on despite those comments I think I'm the one that's come up with a genius idea for you a genius one and and I think that it is doing what you do best and the Wanger flange might then start to sell later on down the line because people will see that and want to do their own creative changes to your things that you do you've got to set them on a journey first yeah and I think that is the business but it's not something that I'm going to be investing in no I wish you the very best of luck on the journey I'm out [Music] Peter Jones becomes the first dragon to utter the words every entrepreneur dreads is there a fit with Deborah meadan's business portfolio well I think you have definitely got something here I love what you've done you will sell enough and you will have a great business and you will earn some money out of it but I don't think you'll sell enough print for me to invest in you I think the big stuff isn't going to happen for quite a while yeah good luck but I won't be investing okay I'm out um look I clearly see you've got a passion for this product but I'm just really struggling to see the need for a product like this it's a very limited market and I actually do like working with Niche businesses because they you focus and you know you get a certain target market but here it's just so now so it's an investment today I don't really see it as a business to grow so unfortunately I'm gonna say I'm out okay thanks very much so my perception of what's happened since you walk through those doors is that I feel like the other dragons are clutching at straws trying to see where the business opportunity is you know two has gone down is meccano and Deborah's been looking in the garden area at actually I don't think Peter's got it at all foreign exactly but with my heart I mean come on this is right in my space this is enabling people to be creative you know yeah but the reality of that is the sheer volume of work I would need to do to try and convert your idea into a business is Monumental yeah so as an investment unfortunately it's not a one for me today and I'm out okay three more dragons depart in quick succession leaving Tuka Suleiman as Paul's only remaining hope for investment he's already had an idea for a potential use for the product will he now put some cash into the concept you've got something if you've come in here and said here's six products that you can take to Market yeah with my product yep right that's where I come in yeah yeah you know yeah if you ever have something in the children's world yeah that's educational yes that you've put together I would be willing but until I see what that is I can't invest blindly so unfortunately I'm not going to invest in my mouth okay thanks very much the doors open okay thank you I appreciate that thanks Paul good luck cheers Tuka Suleiman declines a deal and the product designers dreams of investment are over I was totally happy I think that com all the comments were fair and balanced and they were really quite um supportive and they give good business advice you really just set this guy away to come up with a Wagga flange baby product yeah baby I said children's educational brother I'll continue on when Peter arrives at an airport and he sees a wang of flanges in the ceiling next to enter the den is construction worker Sean mcgreaty who's been rehearsing his pitch in a less unnerving Arena than the one he's about to enter foreign I've been practicing to my fiance and my two little girls I know I'll be nervous but I'm just gonna go out do the best I can and get a deal oh wow building sites well for them to Blind us like this it must be about the lane Sean is hoping that one dragon in particular will deem his invention a bright idea I'd love if Deborah meaden made an offer just because she's had previous involvement within Construction hi dragons I'm Sean mcbriety inventor and founder of formula the efficient and economic temporary lighting solution formulite was developed when I was working on a construction site with numerous others we required temporary lighting to continue our works but we couldn't get the tower light lifted to our work area this delayed the project wasted man hours and impacted on the project this prompted me to develop an efficient alternative trying to remove the negatives of the existing systems issue one was to remove mechanical lifting and provide flexibility issue two was the storage and space used within the areas of use with some Alternatives using up to six and a half meters squared formalite is completely manually erected they simply clipped together and inserted into the adapter of choice making resources and works more productive sorry plurifieds increase flexibility and allows you to insert into any base adapter it has achieved a UK patent and with the help of a dragon we can fully concrete its place in the temporary lighting Market thanks for listening and I'd like to invite any questions you may have how much do you want and what percentage sorry guys you want a pound for 100 sorry I'm looking for 20 today for sixty thousand pounds [Music] some minor snagging problems but otherwise a well-constructed pitch from Sean mcbriety he's asking for a sixty thousand pound cash injection in return for a 20 stake in his efficient temporary lighting Enterprise Peter Jones is first to survey the product so in essence then your invention is a tube with a light on top I'm not going to Jazz it up it's simply a temporary Lamppost that can be used in multiple environments and what about the ones that are there at the moment that are telescopic yeah you've got telescopic Lighting systems but it's the base conditions they take up in use if you're working on the 20th floor erecting the structure of a new building you can't land these units comfortably so this was designed to primarily in a Concrete Construction scenario there's a cast in sleeve which is widely used already so we've designed the system to be swaged to insert directly into that so you don't need another base found in we've also got base plate for level ground application and then we've also got a steel frame clamp because there are lights that are out there that are very similar to that but they clip onto anything so they've got clamps at the top so you could fit those lights they're battery powered anywhere you wanted yeah why would you not just buy those lights instead of carrying around because they're not exactly they don't fit in your pocket do they the the issue with lights that just clip on to anywhere where you've got especially in a construction scenario you haven't got that item to clip to it's a very simple solution but it solves a number of issues [Music] the entrepreneur holds his own against Peter Jones's comparisons to the competition now to kasuliman wanted to put the company's numbers under the spotlight and then what does it retail for a unit which is the two tubes and the top bracket with the lamp sells at 299. because cost of each unit the standard set is 90 pound manufacturer and you said you've sold 160 units yeah 162 to be exact and how long have you been going we started Trading 2016. wow the window is small because we're operating from October to March so 22 weeks of each year yeah but there's barely you know 40 30 40 units a year uh I mean it's you know less than one a week you know you've come up with this idea and you're telling us it's really useful and changes the way people light up construction settings so why is it that no one has bought into this in four years because 160 units doesn't tell me you've got a business at the moment yeah so why is that I think a lot of it is not having the marketing capabilities so the financial backing to be able to go and get it out there properly and Market it to the people I need to be marking it to see I don't believe that because you are in the construction industry yeah you know who the white contractors are in the industry so if people like it they would order it if they find it's so beneficial so I can't accept it as an excuse [Music] stuttering sales figures in a word of mouth industry prove a cause for concern for tej lauvani what does Sean's preferred Dragon construction investment veteran Deborah meaden think about the venture who have who in the construction industry have you sold it to so mainly um like structural frame companies so the likes of Lango Rock so Lang a rock how many did they buy they bought 10 lamps and when probably 2018 that isn't a good sign my experience with the construction industry is that they try stuff they either love it or they're really resistant to it you know I'm never changing because that's what I'm you know we've done that forever so there is an issue in terms of longevity but what could win me over is a patent that puts a battery light on the top of a pole but I'm staggered that you've got that so specifically what have you got your pattern for a light source with the energy source at the top of an elongated Pole I hate to say I want to have a look at that patent yeah that's fine bring it over and put it down you pop it down lovely thank you very much strange times yes yes this is a very very detailed pattern now because there's actually prior art here isn't it there's already yeah there is product out there so what you've done is come up with a different way of doing something that other people are already doing what I was hoping for was something in your pattern that we're going to be able to apply to thousands of other things but you haven't got that this is why I need you yes but it's not going to change the general picture so I love that you've you saw a problem you've sold it you've designed it but I'm afraid I won't be investing okay thanks Deborah bye now thank you Deborah meaden is unconvinced that the light pole has the potential to dominate the market and walks away from a deal has the DIY doiens verdict suede Sarah Davies either way I don't profess to know anything about the temporary lighting industry in fact what you've told me now is probably 90 of my knowledge on the subject so assuming I give you the 60 Grand today what what is the magic bullet that I'm going to deliver your business that's going to turn it from how it's performing now to a successful business I think it's having the contacts within the industry to be able to accelerate the within which industry do you need contacts in the construction work are you need help with manufacturing yeah on the manufacturing side to be able to accelerate that if I really believe that all you needed from us is help with the manufacturing I could do that no problem yeah my concern is that's just the start of where you need the help what you need support to do is to change the way that the construction industry is going to embrace lighting yeah it's education I think it's just going to be such a huge road ahead and so it doesn't feel like an investment for me so I'm really sorry wish you all the best of the business but I'm out so Sean make this interesting for me I'm just concerned about putting 60 Grand today really when am I going to get my money back I I think I think um there's a big market for it we've discussed construction but you've also got events private functions sports teams amateur teams who continue to struggle to get flood lit pitches so I think there's a big market for this look I think you're a great guy but I think you need to go back to the drawing board and then maybe come back when you sold a few so for that reason I'm going to say good luck but I'm out okay thank you you're a perfect example of somebody that you've come up with an idea you're testing it and who knows you might start to build a business and something will come out of that but at the moment I see an electric battery operated light at the end of a pole doesn't make a business for me so for that reason I'm out but good luck three more dragons are turned off by Sean's offering and exit negotiations is now the entrepreneur's last glimmer of hope Sean you've sold 160 in four years that tells you a lot if you're saying that you can install temporary lighting quickly efficiently your route to Market is not to sell these your route to Market is to rent them yes I agree so if you were renting these you might have a business hmm I'll put it this way if I was unemployed and I gave you all my time we could probably mix a success you're at a very early stage so all I can do the second is hopefully make you think have a look at renting these yeah and who knows where you might end up yeah okay okay but unfortunately I'm not gonna invest it and I'm out okay thanks Tuka thanks very much all the best Sean thank you so the lights go out on Sean's pitch as Tuka Suleiman declined the deal but gives the entrepreneur plenty to think about on the future of his business got it really didn't go to plan more sales would have changed things but the business is where it is at the moment you in your office give me yep what do you do if you haven't got a backup can you call then you call Sean the light tuka's comment about the rent Always Somewhere we've been looking so I'll just keep going keep driving it forward to make it a great business whilst the pandemic has generated significant challenges for many entrepreneurs it has created new opportunities for others business partners Gary Giles and Alan Watts believe they're perfectly placed to capitalize on the recent growth in home working right now I'm feeling a little bit nervous if I'm honest about it but at the same time I'm raring to go and we just want to do something positive for the world yourself Gary and Allen's product isn't Child's Play but it might make it big in the worlds of construction I think it's potentially revolutionary for the building industry I know a couple of the dragons are particularly keen on Recycling and I think we've got a product that text boxes that very few other products do here we go here we go [Music] hello Dragons I'm Gary Giles founder of Ogle and I'm Alan Watts head of production and we're here seeking a 50 000 pounds investment for a five percent share in the company so what is Ogle well it's a rapid building system that takes waste like this turns it into L's like this which we then turn into anything from a humanitarian shelter to a garden room like this building with Ogle gives you lots of advantages over traditional build methods particularly it's ease of use and its speed of assembly now I'm going to build part of the wall where I'll pass you back to Gary let's be honest we're all addicted to plastic what we've done is built something here that is 80 percent waste material recycling needs a hero in its name is Ogle in fact open your boxes we have some samples [Music] we need to assemble construction system with Planet saving potential is the offering from Gary Giles and Alan Watts if you pull up the other piece the yellow piece but that's on the floor and then match the yellow to the yellow who is seeking 50 000 pounds in return for a five percent share in their business I'm excited won that one you know if if you're gonna make it a race can you cut that please the ultra competitive Peter Jones editing but when it comes to a money making opportunity always demands the full picture and he's first with the questions Alan Gary hi hi well it looks like what you've proved here is quite interesting can you take me through the process of how it works how you collect the waste where you collect it from the material is is waste polystyrene the waste comes from several different sources currently your TV your your fridge when they deliver now they have to take the packaging away that goes to a recycling plant and that's where that material generally comes from so look I mean the construction industry is shouting out for Sustainable Building Materials so what is the cost versus the standard materials cost with her cheaper is this compared to a brick system or yeah compared to a big system because a square meter of double skin with insulation in the middle of it is about 180 pounds a square meter that will sort of work out of as a sale price roughly about 140 pounds that's a good start yep Gary and Alan appear to have devised a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to bricks and mortar now Sarah Davies wants to discover more about the pairs planned to convert their big idea into big bucks guys I think it's wonderful okay so have you come in today with uh this is our business model we've got a plan yeah this is what we're going to do or is it a case if you're coming here and saying we've got this awesome product we kind of need to know the best way to take it next the garden building Market in the UK is worth over 100 million companies are looking to have their employees at home okay this is a solution and it's the model that you'll go out and build it for them or is the model primarily you want to sell them as kids ready for people to build their own personally I think it's a DIY product I feel quite excited by that because I think that opens the market up a lot Alan Gary First Look I think it looks ingenious yeah yeah we think so all right that's good I'm pleased that you're proud of your product but what other products are out there that are 80 percent recycled I I we know of no other recycled building um anything like this and have you got the patent on how this comes together yeah we're at the uh um National stage of of patent we have three very small objections that's all we're dealing with now with the European patent office yeah small objections can become big ones though we found against those objections last week but um we have the the letter there if everyone's have a look at it I I love what it solves and also the application it looks really really good but there's one Dragon that's got very good experience in this Marketplace okay I would like to listen and hear before I decide to invest sure but okay initial reaction is very positive so I'm going to tell you where I am dear future where the production of polystyrene reduces and we start using alternative sources which then kind of is a issue now I accept what you're saying I mean over the years there's been lots of alternative packaging come up with but polystyrene packaging for certain things is still the best method of packaging it the ingenious bit for me is actually the recyclability but I'm afraid you're talking to a bit of a purist because allowing us to produce more and more polystyrene and finding an end use for it doesn't stop the use of polystyrene you know in fact recycling in about five years time will be a start being a bit of a dirty word because all the talk is about stop producing the stuff you know it's it's so so there will be supply issues and that will knock its selling point out as far as I'm concerned so I'm really sorry but I'm I'm not investing I'm out an unanticipated blow for Gary and Alan as the dense doyen of sustainability predicts the demise of polystyrene the raw material around which the pairs business revolves will Tech Titan Peter Jones share her analysis Gary I started off by saying I think it's ingenious I'm finishing by thinking it's ingenious but I've also really listened to what Deborah was saying as well and I think that really makes sense to me because I'm in that sort of world of the technology and I see the televisions and we see the the packaging already diminishing yeah almost monthly yeah which is a wonderful thing yeah um so I'm going to wish you well on your way and say sadly today I'm out Alan Gary great idea that that we've established but at the end of the day I need to know whether your product is commercial it might be a great idea it might be crazy price so ideally this is for garden sheds or outer buildings what would this one because about about 12 gram plus five how much 12 000 plus that to me it sounds expensive okay and I think the real issue for you will be the fact that not a lot of people are going to pay out twelve thousand pounds for that okay so I'm not going to invest in them out further disappointment for Gary and Alan as two more dragons joined Deborah meaden in declining the deal Sarah Davies has been scrutinizing the pair's all-important patent application so is their invention protectable right I've had a good read through and actually feel really comfortable that you're in a good place with your IP um the great news is I absolutely love the product and seeing the patent gave me the confidence that you have the foundations to build a a really successful business so I will make you an offer and I will offer you all of the money for 10 of the business okay an offer for Gary and Alan all of the money albeit in exchange for double the five percent equity they were originally looking to give away is teslaovani prepared to match or even better it so guys I think you've definitely got a very interesting product and where I think I could help you is the consumer aspect and I build consumer brands for a living yep and so I'm willing to make an offer okay I'm going to show you all the money fifty thousand pounds for ten percent okay thank you just go and talk to our wall yeah talk to you all while see if it talks more sense in the brick one it's decision time for the construction entrepreneurs the next few moments could prove pivotal for the future of the business I think you're both great I'm not going to argue about the percentages but would you consider going half each in it [Music] because he both got something to bring to the table I think you're right between us we have different skill sets in different areas but both with the same consumer Focus so I'd be willing to do that we both have um areas that complement in the business so I'm happy to share we've got a deal fantastic that's great well exciting thank you success for Gary and Alan who leave The Den with the 50 000 pounds they were originally seeking yeah they're quite pleased and the support of a Duo of dragons with the consumer expertise to elevate their building business to a whole new level I'm a bit emotionally it's like I could tell that I think today it could be a complete Game Changer sky's the limit I don't think the dragons have seen anything like this product before they're gonna either get it or not get it [Music] the best thing that can happen is they all want to make an offer I guess we'll find out soon enough [Music] hello dragons my name is Peter Wayne and I'm the founder of ocoform I'm here today to ask for seventy thousand pounds for 15 of my business I've spent many years working within the commercial office interior market and during this time I noticed something called the thermostat wall this is where individuals in an office are either too hot or too cold and argue over the temperature that's why I came up with the occo form heated desk our desks produce a radiant heat that comes out from underneath the desk heating the user's legs their torso body as well as the wrists and fingers we've developed a homeworking desk as well as a commercial desk and the reason we are looking for investment is we want to launch this go big and get the name out there and become synonymous with what we're doing in the office space so I'd like to welcome any questions and also please feel free to come and touch one of my desks self-heating desks for both business and home use is the brainchild of Peter Wayne so the heat is actually coming out from underneath the desk here can you feel it on your legs yeah you can feel it on your legs yeah he's asking for 70 000 pounds in return for 15 of his energy saving business this fan heater here is 3000 Watts our desk is just 260 Watts so you can run more than 10 desks for the same price as that one fan heater Sarah Davies is first to turn up the heat with some questions Peter hello I love it when people solve a real genuine problem brilliant I mean I'm just thinking about me when I've been working at home this last year I am that person puts the heater on to what turns it off too cold turns it on and I'm on off on off all day yeah so I totally totally get the need for it where are you at in your journey at the moment we are sort of pre-revenue we started the business about 12 months ago now and we've just got an order for 400 units and that's with a company called Cobalt who will be reselling into the likes of dunelm very group Argos so they will be acting as our distributor and we're in talks with b and Q but their early stage talks at the moment okay so what does that retail us that would retail at 349. and what do you sell it to wholesale for wholesale is one three nine and what's it costing you to make 101 . I would have expected slightly higher margins yeah office furniture industry there's not loads of margin to make in in desks um but I've no doubt we can get this for less than 101 pounds and this is where I am open to to help the entrepreneur reaches out for some Dragon assistance to improve his meager margins first Peter Jones wants to know more about head honcho how did you come up with this Peter what do you do what's your background what's your living so I worked in office furniture um for a number of years with my my dad's company from the age of 18 for about eight years and then I went back to work for him in in 2015. wow he became ill hmm and I said I'd go back and help him until he got better but he didn't um sorry um worked from home sort of Family Guy really didn't ever want to make it anything big but when he was Ill we just sort of I came in and said let's go for it obviously family needs money and things like that so um 2017 I turned over 860 000. he died in January so I this is what I I sort of focused on and uh I had lots of people interested in it and said go and try it and that's where you started and have you still got the business that you took over but I'm ready to step away from that now okay I'm sorry to hear about your father thank you [Music] an emotional interchange as Peter reveals a personal loss along with a newfound focus on his furniture concept Lima now wants to establish where he's got to on his journey to making this business a success Peter have you delivered any of these to this distributor not yet no so the question is the product's not proven the Distributors not delivered into any retail so you so you've got no knowledge that they've can sell it they can't sell it risk now can you convince me that you've sold 70 on your website and there is maybe a Light Of Hope there yeah direct to consumer uh we haven't sold many other website we've sold less than 20 on the website 20. [Music] Peter you've spoke a lot about the importance of building a brand right building that direct consumer business and you said with the money from the investment today if you were to be successful you want to go big and get the name out there so with the money we do want to look we need I need help in terms of marketing definitely do you have a marketing strategy no no I don't have any marketing strategy so you if you don't have a marketing strategy presumably you can't give me any future projections about how the business is going to perform so the future projections are based on uh what we're looking at within the retail retail just to be clear on the point about retail retail contracts that you don't currently have yeah how can you make projections when you don't have the contracts a plan we've saved we do have a relatively detailed business plan let's let's do the projections then so what is the what are the projections for years one two and three going forward okay so year one protection projection is 1.7 million year one year one year two would be at 3.5 million and then year three we would look at a 5.7 million pound turnover big numbers how do you get to 5.7 million Revenue in three years without a marketing plan and without any retail contracts at all so the in terms of the retail we've got the contacts in terms of COBOL and the other organization we've just got to get the contracts but I believe that we can get these numbers because people love the product they love the idea and they love what it does Peter fights for his future in the den after holding his hands up and admitting to not having a master plan when it comes to his marketing and now Sarah Davies is Keen to see if there's any competition in the hot desk sector this is a unique concept idea do you have any intellectual property on it no we can't get a patent on it because of Prior Arts if someone has tried it there was a company in Germany in 2015 that tried it and then there's another company in the UK and theirs is it retails at two and a half thousand pounds My worry is now anytime Dick and Harry can come along and do this what copy yeah I'm sure in in 12 months time I wouldn't be surprised if if we do get people so you're expecting there to be imitation in the marketplace within 12 months I I expect that someone will copy when it takes off I thought of it before not made it successful so it leaves me thinking is there actually a market for the product the market is massive it's not just but if the market was massive I can't understand why people aren't in there doing it I'm not convinced that this is going to work as a business because I think if it did it would be already so I definitely won't be investing today so I'm out Sara Davies can't see a future for the furniture Venture and becomes the first dragon to hot foot it away from the discussion [Music] see an investment opportunity in the desk proposition Peter um I think it's really clever um then I go to the phase of where's your protection across the business you were very honest you haven't got any protection then you go to the place of okay well where's the margin now but you haven't got a margin play here and as you increase sales you might expect that your margin potentially will increase but I'm not so sure it will so you've got a really neat idea you clearly have come up with a great concept but it's not something I'm going to invest in today and sadly I'm out a lot of barriers the desk for at home you know I can't imagine the sort of compelling reason why you'd buy that and when you go into the commercial environment I still don't think that overcomes thermostat walls because I still think people are going to think up too or I'm too cold even if my desk is on so so I I want to love it but I'm not convinced so I'm afraid I won't be investing I do wish you all the luck though but I'm out Peter you've got some orders unfortunately you've got no results you got a good idea but you haven't sold any what's a question mark as an investor it's for that reason I'm not going to invest them out okay thank you three more dragons depart and Peter is feeling the Heat will Stephen Bartlett Overlook the missing marketing plan and table a bid [Music] Pizza um I I got to try the product and I sat in it I thought this is cool right but but then when you think about the sort of Economics of a customer that's going to be buying this cool isn't enough you know I now know this exists from seeing it today and I still wouldn't buy one okay and I thought so why is that well because I just go and buy a little heater however my real issue is with the lack of strategy going forward that's gonna achieve these very ambitious Revenue numbers and you've admitted that yep I really really you know I appreciate how difficult this was for you today I felt that right but for me this isn't an investable business and so I'm out no problem thank you very much thank you thank you five knows and Peter's proposal tanks in the den he departs with neither cash nor a dragon partner I'm obviously disappointed in in how it went because I generally thought we were going to get some investment I find that really frustrating when it's a a real problem and you think yes great solution to the problem and then the business just doesn't stack I don't think there's anything I could have done differently yeah it was just it just wasn't meant to be this time
