hello everyone welcome back to the dork side I am the dork in my garage and today we're gonna talk about the five best dual sport motorcycles for dual sport beginners trying to decide on your first bike I have some thoughts for you [Music] I'm the dork of the road and I want to be your Internet riding buddy and I want to help new dual sport riders get into the sport and show them that adventurous for everybody please consider subscribing and don't forget to turn on the notifications you know when I post awesome adventure content and new rider content just like this never not to do with my hands if you're interested in getting into dual sport riding you've seen some videos you seen my videos you see never ice videos you've seen each adventures videos and you're dying to get out there and explore the wilderness on a motorcycle of your very own but you're not sure if you can handle the power and majesty of a dual sport motorcycle let me give you some ideas on where to start so I consider myself probably an intermediate rider at this point but very recently I was a new rider and so I understand I think many of the concerns that new riders have so I get asked a lot what would be a good bike for a new rider I'm thinking of getting into dual sport riding what bike should I look at and so this video I think I want to make to help you make that decision for yourself in my opinion a good bike for a dual sport beginners should be three things relatively inexpensive unintimidating and/or forgiving for a new rider and inexpensive to own maintain and continue to own also when I talk about beginners I'm talking about people that are just getting their feet wet in the world of off-road riding I'm not talking about people converting from dirt bikes or people with a lot of adventure bike experience these are people who are brand new to riding off the pavement so sort of the intended audience for this video is people who are interested in exploring off-road maybe some light forest road riding maybe even easy trails and they also maybe are going to do some street riding in between so they want to recommend bikes that are versatile useful but they're not gonna be out there pushing Black Diamond trails alright let's get into the top five I would like to say these are in no particular order but honestly they go from the one I recommend the leaves to the one that I would recommend most number five and this is a bike that I have personal experience with this is Suzuki Dr 200 and my dad has a do 200 test wrote it when he got it I've written in the woods it did a review video on it which you can check out up here up here I never remember I'm gonna guess over here so the dr 200 is 100 99 CC carbureted motorcycle the five-speed transmission has eight inches of suspension travel 10 inches of clearance as the 33 inch seat height weighs just under two and eighty pounds an MSRP of 4649 it has a three point four gallon fuel tank standard biggest gas think of anything on this list so that's a huge advantage especially if you plan on riding on the highway to get to where you're gonna ride off road riding off-road and then riding home that's almost a full gallon more than anything else on this list so it's a big advantage so keep that in mind and it comes stock and the other bike you'd have to add an aftermarket fuel tank one of my favorite dual sport bikes even though I've never ridden one I've sat on one but I just think it's a unique bike with a ton of character and honestly it was a little bit more capable I probably owned one but that is the Yamaha TW 200 or the tee dubs is it's called they're very capable little bikes I have 196 cc engine they're carbureted five-speed transmission now of note is that the TW 200 has the least suspension travel of any of the bikes on this list 6.3 inches up front five point nine inches in the rear ground clearance know for some reason is about the same as the other bikes it's ten point four inches seat height 31 inches this unites the lowest seat height on this list so the least intimidating in terms of climbing on and off the bike yet it still has these and ground clearance but it sort of gives up suspension travel to make that happen soon 78 pounds has a 1.9 gallon fuel tank and the official MSRP on the Suzuki website is 45 99 but a dealer near me a couple like 40 miles from here always has them on sale for $4,000 so I'd be real surprised you couldn't get one for 4 grand if you were looking for a TW 200 now another unique thing about the tee dubs is it has an ATV style really huge rear tire I really come kind of dig it they're very cool very unique bikes and I think it should check it out it's probably the lowest bar to entry of any bike on this list cheapest bike to get into next blank also from Yamaha so if you go to a dealership you can check out both at the same time it's the xt 250 xt 250 is 249 see fuel-injected engine five-speed transmission 8.9 inches of front suspension travel 7.1 inches in the rear 31.9 inch seat height 290-pound kerb weight is a two point six gallon fuel tank and retails for 50 $1.99 so it's a little bit more expensive you're paying for fuel injection it's a little bit better suspension and setup and all that this bike is super reliable it's supposed to be great on trails has a low seat height very very unintimidating you can't underestimate how important that low C seat height is especially if you're a new writer I recommend maybe something a little bit taller than you think you can handle because eventually you're gonna see that big seat height is not as big of a deal as you think it is but I don't think you should go crazy high up for your first bike either nothing that you can't comfortably get at least your toes down has the highest ground clearance of any bike on this list which is crazy considering it has the second lowest seat height unintimidating easy to ride great bike for someone that's never ridden before to really get into motorcycling and learn how to ride off-road and go explore the forest so xt 250 great bike to look into I almost bought one and when I bought my CRF it was right there at the top of the list number four and this is a brand new model I think new for 2020 yeah there's a Kawasaki k LX 2:30 so the 230 has a 233 CC engines fuel-injected six-speed transmission so it's gonna be a little bit friendlier on the highway as 8 point 7 inches of suspension travel in the front 8.8 in the rear ten point four inches of ground clearance so 34 inch seat height so it's a little higher 293 pounds 2 gallon fuel tank MSRP is $45.99 relatively inexpensive to get into that updated technology as a brand new model reviews have been very very good it's not a stump jumping cliff hopping you know crazy dual sport machine but for forest road exploration some commuting and light trails it's supposed to be a really really great bike I really hope I get to ride one someday but read rave reviews so I would strongly consider checking out the new Kawasaki klx 230 so that's number two with the fourth bike on our list my second favorite the number one bike on this list and you're probably thinking you can already guess it because there is the CRF 250 L right over there you see it and you'd be wrong but also right because in my opinion the best first motorcycle if you can afford it for a brand new I was thinking about getting off road is the CRF 250 L but it's the Honda CRF 250 L rally 249 cc engine fuel injection 6 speed 11 inches of front suspension travel 10 inches of rear suspension travel ground clearance 10 point 6 inches so less than the xt 250 was surprised me 35 inch seat height which seems high until you sit on the thing I am very short I was short inseam I was concerned about that myself but with the suspension sag it's very manageable 341 pounds kerb weight it's kind of heavy but that's the extra fairings and the windscreen 2.7 gallon that's only on the rally my 250 L has a 2 gallon tank and it retails for MSRP of 59-49 so it cost a little bit more but you'll get more for your money you get the fairing you get the windscreen you get a bigger fuel tank and in my opinion the CRF 250r rally if you could afford it it's a great first off-road bike it's a great first motorcycle period it's a really really solid choice it's very versatile you can check out my five things Wyatt dual sport is the best first more sub motorcycle video to learn a little bit more about why I would recommend starting on a dual sport but versatility is number one why I like the rally over the 250 L is it takes that versatility and kicks it up a notch because while the 250 L is serviced ibly comfortable and does ok on the highway the fairing of the windscreen on a rally really really opened up possibilities for light touring it you can turn it into a lightweight super adventure bike with just a very little effort any of the other bikes in this list are not as well set up for that on-road stuff but you're not sacrificing any of the off-road exploration light trail riding forest road fire road exploration urban exploration you don't give me any of that ability up but you gain a bunch of on-road comfort and so for a new rider especially one that doesn't know what kind of riding they're into that but versatility and that go anywhere sort of ability is really going to help you figure out what you're into we all start riding thing having a vision of what type of writing are gonna be most into like very few people end up exactly where they thought they would so that's why I think that dual sports a great bike to start on one more thing I love about the rally is it's a bike you can grow into like I said it's a little bit taller it may seem intimidating at first but it's actually manageable but it's a bike that will last you for a long time you'll be able to use it to its fullest capabilities for a longer period of time whereas with the tee dubs for the dr 200 you might get bored quickly if as your skills grow and want to upgrade I think the 250 L is less prone to that what do you think let me know in the comments what you think the best dual sport bike for brand new off-road riders is let me know if you agree or disagree you'll notice all these bikes are Japanese is there a non-japanese bike that you would recommend I'm biased
