15. Tyler Hadley
This photo just looks like two buddies at a party, trying to look hard. In fact, it is two friends at a party - a
party thrown by Tyler Hadley, the guy on the right, who had just taken the lives of both
his parents in Port St. Lucie, Florida. In 2011, Hadley took his parents’ cell phones,
and then entered his parents’ room. His mother, Mary-Jo, was working on the computer. He stood behind her for five minutes, before
taking her life with a hammer. When Blake, Tyler’s dad, came to her aid,
the boy took his father’s life as well. Then, just like that, he cleaned up, locked
their bodies in their bedroom, and then hosted a house party about three hours later. Around sixty people came to the party that
night, unaware that two bodies were hidden away in the house. That is, until Tyler told his friend what
he’d done, and word was spread. Tyler was taken into custody the next morning
and sentenced to life behind bars without parole. Looking, again, at the photo, you can see
the darkness in his eyes, although we’ll never know whether or not he felt remorse. 14. Facebook Update
Redditor, Yugen9x offered up this chilling photo: a Facebook post by Robert Giblin which
read, “Happiness is…” The photo showed him and his pregnant wife
looking very much in love. He posted this photo moments after taking
his wife’s life and pushing her over the balcony, where she fell 21 stories to her
demise. Right after, he jumped as well. We can only guess what made Giblin snap the
night of committing this act of taking the lives of his wife and unborn child. Judging from the photograph, who would have
predicted it? 13. Jolee Callan
This hiking photo takes a dark turn. -eDgAR- shared this image of 18-year-old Jolee
Callan, the last photo that would ever be taken of her. Callan and her ex-boyfriend, Loren Bunner,
went on a hike on Pinhoti Trail, Alabama in August of 2015. Bunner had asked his ex to join him on this
hike. Callan, who wanted to remain friends with
her ex, agreed but jokingly sent a message to her friend the evening before, saying,
“If something happens to me, you’ll know who I was with.” Unfortunately, Callan’s intuition was spot-on. Her ex-boyfriend took her life and then pushed
her body over a cliff. Before he took her life, he took a series
of photos, this being the very last. Bunner even posted four of the photos to Instagram
after the incident. Hours later, he turned himself in, and Callan’s
body was found at the base of the cliff. According to court records, Bunner had bragged
about his actions to his cellmates, saying that if he couldn’t have her, no one could. Bunner was sentenced to 52 years in prison. 12. Elizabeth Smart
Imagine you glance at a very normal-looking photo, only to find out later that a person
in it had suffered in some extraordinary way. This entry was submitted to reddit by bflstar. The picture shows some sort of gathering. Two men are having a discussion, while a young
woman, who is dressed all in white and wearing a veil, looks off, staring ahead. If you looked at this photo, you might wonder
about the context, but it doesn’t appear as though anything seriously disturbing is
going on. But what you’ve just witnessed is a woman,
abducted. This photo is of Elizabeth Smart. Bflstar wrote, “The picture was taken some
time in the middle of that period [of her disappearance], at a party the kidnapper crashed
with Smart. She was made to wear the veil in order to
keep from being recognized in public.” Most people know of or have at least heard
about Elizabeth Smart, the American girl who was taken at age 14. She’d been taken from her Salt Lake City
home in 2002 by Brian David Mitchell. For nine months, he and his wife held her
captive, until she was rescued by police in 2003 with help from two witnesses who’d
watched America’s Most Wanted and recognized the pair of abductors. Mitchell was sentenced to two life terms,
while his wife got fifteen years after taking a plea bargain. And Smart faced this horrible nightmare by
becoming an advocate and activist for missing persons. 11. Josef Fritzl
Looks like a normal vacation photo - just your average guy having a good time on a boat. But this guy isn’t one bit average. This is Josef Fritzl, who while enjoying his
vacation in Thailand, had a deep, dark secret: his daughter was being held captive at home
in his cellar. In fact, she’d been imprisoned there for
24 years. Fritzl had convinced his wife and police that
Elisabeth, their daughter, had run away to join a religious cult, when actually he was
keeping her in a dungeon beneath their home in Austria. While in captivity, he fathered seven children
with her, one of whom passed. After Elisabeth’s captivity was discovered
when one of her daughters was taken to the hospital, Fritzl was arrested and pleaded
guilty to the charges against him. He was sentenced to life in prison, where
hopefully he’s gotten a taste of his own medicine. 10. Two Brothers
All too often, we hear stories of familicide - when someone goes nuts and just up and take
the lives of their entire family. Looking at this photo, do you think either
of these men could ever commit such an act? zeppelin1023 submitted this entry to reddit,
two brothers who seemed perfectly happy sitting next to each other, while their mother snapped
the photo. All the while, something heinous was simmering
inside the brother on the left. In 2003 in an upper-class suburb of Houston
called Sugar Land, Texas, the Whitakers were getting ready to go out and celebrate Bart’s
“good news” when this photo was taken. He’d just announced that he’d completed
his final exams at Sam Houston State University. His family went out to dinner that night,
gifting Bart with a Rolex. Sugar Land was a quiet community, so just
imagine how it imploded when the Whitaker family was attacked by an armed intruder,
after returning home from the restaurant later that evening, leaving two passed away. But the story takes a darker turn. It came out that Bart Whitaker, the man on
the left in this photo was behind the incident that took the lives of his mother and brother. All the while at dinner, he knew the person
he hired to take the lives of his family was lurking at his parents’ house, awaiting
their arrival. When they got there, Bart pretended to have
left his cell phone in the car. When the rest of the family came face to face
with his assailant. Bart played the part. He ran inside and “attacked” the assailant. 911 was called, but it was too late for Tricia
and Kevin Whitaker. However, his father, Kent Whitaker, survived
the incident. At first, it looked like a burglary gone wrong,
but soon the truth came out. Bart hadn’t graduated from university at
all. In fact, he’d never attended. When investigators were closing in, Bart fled
the country. His associate made a confession to the cops
and told them Bart’s motive: money. He also pointed investigators to a bag of
discarded evidence that would link Bart to the incident. In September of 2005, Bart was taken into
custody in Mexico and, in 2007, he was convicted of his actions. 9. Foxcatcher
This photo shows two men, seemingly friends, having a good time. One of them - the man on the bottom, is John
du Pont. He was the heir to the Du Pont family fortune,
which he used to establish the Foxcatcher Farm, a wrestling facility. He also became a sponsor of USA Wrestling. If you’ve seen the movie, Foxcatcher, you
know this isn’t going to go well. John hired Schultz, the other guy in the photo,
to coach his wrestling team. Dave Schultz was an Olympic champion freestyle
wrestler. He coached the entire team, who lived at the
farm, and he lived there as well. John was a strange man, in general. Very eccentric. But he started to act increasingly erratic,
and his friends were worried about his demonstrations of paranoia. Over time, he convinced himself Schultz was
planning to take his life. He even thought his friend was hiding in the
walls, spying. One day, in 1996, he drove to his friend’s
house and took Schultz’s life in front of his family. Looking at this picture of friendship, you
wouldn’t believe any of it. 8. Katrina
Redditor Muadibz shared this entry about Zach Bowen and Addie Hall. The photo shows the pair sitting next to each
other weathering the storm that was Hurricane Katrina. The photo was taken in September of 2005 in
New Orleans’ French Quarter after Katrina hit. The couple is sitting in front of their home,
looking perfectly content. But their relationship would soon go another
direction. Zack was described by his friends as a “pretty
average American boy,” who married a girl when he was 18 and entered the military to
support the two children that followed. He served a tour in Kosovo and another in
Iraq and returned home after a general discharge. His wife split with him upon his return, and
he became a bartender in the French Quarter. This is where he met Addie Hall, also a bartender. They soon got together and were one of the
few who didn’t evacuate during Hurricane Katrina. They became somewhat famous for this fact,
living a life of survival and nothing more. No electricity, no responsibilities. Just surviving. When the French Quarter breathed back to life,
they couldn’t adjust. It all came crashing down in October of 2006. This is when Bowen took Hall’s life while
she was bathing. He then stayed a while in the apartment, spray
painting messages on the walls, including: "please call my wife. i love her. i’m a total failure. look in the oven. please help me stop the pain.” He also wrote a five-page note. About a week later, Bowen jumped from the
roof of the Omni Hotel. The note was in his pocket. It included details of Addie and where they
could find her. A sad tale of the heart of darkness and the
demons that live within. 7. The Moors
This photo shows a woman crouching in the grass, looking down pensively. That woman is Myra Hindley. She and Ian Brady were actively taking the
lives of children. They were active around Manchester, England
from 1963 to 1965, and they targeted people between the ages of 10 and 17 years old. Called “the most evil woman in Britain,”
Hindley was never released from prison, where she passed at 60 years old in 2002, while
Brady was declared insane. Justice Fenton Atkinson, their trial judge,
called the pair “two sadistic [people] of the utmost depravity” in his closing remarks. Couldn’t have said it better myself. 6. Lightning
As a lightning storm rolled into Sequoia National Park in California, these brothers were climbing
Moro Rock. Looking as though they’d just rubbed their
heads with a balloon, Michael and Sean McQuilken posed for a picture in 1975, taken by their
sister, Mary. Michael was 18 at the time; his brother was
12. After taking the photo, Michael raised his
right hand in the air, and his ring started to buzz. The temperature dropped suddenly, and hail
came flying down. Then, as the siblings descended the mountain,
lightning struck. Sean got the brunt of the bolt. According to Michael, he was struck unconscious,
smoke was pouring from his back, and he suffered burns of the third degree. Both brothers survived, but others were not
so lucky. The bolt that struck Sean was three pronged. It hit two others, one of whom passed away. Some advice: if lightning is imminent, you
might feel tingling sensations and hair standing on end. In such cases, shelter is key, but if you
can’t make it to shelter, crouching down on the balls of your feet is your prime safety
position. 5. James Bulger
This CCTV image appears to be innocent, when in reality, it shows a 2-year-old boy being
led by two other young boys to his demise. The story of James Bulger truly haunts anyone
who’s ever read or heard about the case. 10-year-olds Jon Venables and Robert Thompson
were the culprits who took Bulger from a shopping center in 1993. Bulger’s mother had looked away for a second,
and that’s when Venables led him away, holding his hand. The security footage prior to his taking shows
the pair of boys considering other children in the shopping center before going with James. They had originally planned to push their
target into oncoming traffic. Instead, they led Bulger 2.5 miles to a canal,
took his lfie, and left him on train tracks. The boy’s body was found two days later,
and the boys responsible were charged and found guilty of their actions. Such a horrific incident, with this single
snapshot being one of the only pieces of evidence to ensure that justice was served. 4. Demon Core
young-boy-kyle brings us this photo from the infamous “demon core” incident. The redditor explains, “Physicist Louis
Slotin was conducting an experiment to verify the exact point at which a subcritical mass
of fissile material could be made critical.” Why were they running this experiment? The core was left over after Japan surrendered. However, it was kept alive for testing. The thing is, a critical mass would form if
the spheres were too close, leading to radiation, so he kept the top core pried open with a
screw driver. Yes, a screwdriver. As you may have guessed, that screwdriver
wasn’t a foolproof safeguard. It slipped and he was doused with a massive
amount radiation. Fortunately, he blocked the rest of the people
in the room from getting a face full of radiation, and he was the only one to have passed from
the hazard. He passed away nine days later. This photo is a recreation from that 1945
experiment in the Los Alamos laboratory, reminding us that a screwdriver isn’t your best defense
against the demon core. 3. Prejudice
These photos of a man seemingly at his happiest, and a moment later, at his angriest, embody
prejudice at its most visceral. This man is Paul Goebbels, the Reich Minister
of Propaganda in Germany from 1933 to 1945. He is seen here being photographed by a famed
German-born American photojournalist and staff photographer for Life Magazine. When he took the first smiling photo of Goebbels,
the subject didn’t know of the photographer’s Jewish heritage. The second photo was after he had been told
by one of his staff. The photographer wrote of the incident, “Later
I found him at the same table surrounded by aides and bodyguards…I walked up close and
photographed [him]…He looked up at me with an expression full of hate.” Goebbels succeeded as the Chancellor of Germany
for a single day, before he followed in his dear leader’s footsteps. Goebbels and his wife took the lives of their
six children, and then took their own lives. 2. Class Photo
Coltraine89 submitted this class photo, writing, “Looks like an ordinary school photo.” But if you look in the top left corner, you
can see Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, in their class photo. They took the lives of 12, after which they
took their own lives. Judging by this photo, could you have predicted
these boys were capable of enacting such a horrible event? Before we get to number 1, my name is Chills

Imagine you were taking a photo of your friends rock climbing. The photo at first appears completely normal. That is, until you look closer and spot something
- or someone - hidden in plain sight. Take a look at this photo. Do you see it? How about now? What you’re seeing is hair dyed red - the
red hair of 22-year-old Saylor Guilliams, who was hiking in Santa Barbara with her equally
inexperienced friend, Brenden Vega. Day was turning to night, and the pair were
having trouble finding their way back to their car, when Guilliams fractured her left leg
after leaping from a rock. With 0% battery cell phones and no flashlights,
Vega tried to carry his friend, but he ended up falling, himself, smashing his elbow, his
glasses, and her ankle. They decided it was best for Vega to go seek
help, as Guilliams couldn’t walk. Once he left, she never saw him again. It was the next afternoon when three hikers
were in the area, taking these photographs. At that point, Guilliams had lost her voice
from yelling for help and was delirious. But luckily, one of the hikers spotted her
hair. Guilliams was rescued by helicopter and airlifted
to Cottage Hospital, and her friend, Vega, was later found passed away, likely from a
fall. Saylor’s father, Jeff Guilliams, said that
if it wasn’t for those three hikers, his daughter wouldn’t be alive. “There’s no rhyme or reason to how it
all turned out,” he said. “It can all go in the blink of an eye.”
