there are so many activities to keep you busy here in sunny surf city usa but to get the most out of your time here are the top 10 things to do with kids in huntington beach [Music] number 10 on the list is the playground on the beach at 9th street at pacific coast highway also known as pch how often you get to watch your kids and ocean waves at the same time this playground has tables benches slides swings and even a pirated themed jungle gym that will entertain your kids for hours after they tire a bit you can have a picnic on the sand and get your feet a little wet in the pacific ocean you can find meter parking on the street or get lucky and park for free on the other side of pch what's great is that there is a crosswalk at 9th street for safe crossing number 9 is the question center you wouldn't imagine that you're able to go horseback riding in a beach city but you can in huntington beach here you and your kids can finally learn how to ride a horse the center has nearly 400 horses and is located in the beautiful setting of central park on 25 acres with 150 acres of public trails where you'll trot around urban forest lake huntington and the park while enjoying the cool breeze from the ocean just two miles away afterwards you can head to captain maze for a bite with the lakeside view number eight in the list is balsa chica ecological reserve which is situated on a 1 45 acre wildlife area here you can soak in the scenery check out all the freshwater critters and birdwatch over 186 species that frequently visit the reserve it's super popular for hikers photographers and obviously bird watchers and there's an interpretive center located at the north lot that has several exhibits that includes three saltwater aquariums contain several marine species native to both the chica and the southern california coast what's better than beach time with your kids beach time with your kids and your dogs number seven is dog beach if you have a fighter in your family then you don't want to miss out on this experience there's something about letting your human furry kids run openly on the sand and water that brings us parents endless joy there's not a handful of dog beaches around so it makes this place a great gem there is meter parking at one end of donk beach at gona west street and pch and another north end on pch as well number six on the list is the shipley nature center it sits on 18 acres of trails that takes you and your kids through native trees and plants of california such as coastal sage oak and even coastal redwoods further down the trail is blackbird pond which is a natural freshwater wetland and there's even a replica native american reed hut they can go inside and explore during springtime you'll see a lot of hummingbirds bees and butterflies all throughout the nature center there are also volunteers to help you with hands-on exhibits that you can explore and touch afterwards you can find a spot right outside the park to enjoy a picnic number five on the list is huntington beach central library the library itself is a beautiful building with towering windows that appears out to scenic central park that you and your kids can spend endless hours at a large saltwater tank greets you before entering the world-class children's library even though the main attraction of the books which you can't miss is story time with an auditorium type of seating your kids will be entertained by stories and music that they can read and sing along from the reader's selection for that day typically there are two slots of designated days for story time so it's best to check with the library number four on the list is kayaking or paddle boarding the harbor and by being in the harbor you and your kids can enjoy the calm waters as you paddle through the protected channels as you make your way around you'll see sea creatures in the water beautiful boats dock next to amazing homes and you can even pull up to a restaurant if you're starting to feel hungry from all that paddling this is a great way to get out in the water for more mellow vibe there are several rental companies that offer paddle boards and kayaks at a great price such as oex sunset beach number three on the list takes us back to central park if you've never played disc golf before then you're in for a treat similar to the rules of golf you add up how many attempts it takes you to throw the disc into the 18 holes or baskets throughout the course the scenery is perfect as it's nestled between the trees overlooks the lake and you can occasionally hear the nearby horses the fees are minimum and there's a snack shop which also rents out discs if you don't have a set of your own it's such a great and fun way to be outdoors with your kids while tapping your competitive spirit it's also the only disc golf course in orange county now on to number two on the list which is biking skating skateboarding or jogging the bike trail this is a great paved trail that goes on for eight straight miles along the coast there is so much to see such as seagulls flying overhead surfers in the water canale island over the channel in the distance and just people watching you can stop and grab a bite to eat at several spots along the trail and even pop in for a concert on sundays at sea legs on the beach if you're in need of a bike you can rent them near the pier at jacks every time i ride this trail it just makes me feel like a kid again and i'm sure you feel the same way when you get to enjoy it with your kids now on to number one on the list and since we're nicknamed surf city usa getting in the ocean is a must you and your kids can surf boogie board swim or simply hang out in the water which will give you the full experience of huntington beach's gem because of the calmer waves of bosochia state beach and sunset beach these are the places you want to go if you and your kids are just learning to get out in the water afterwards you can roll s'mores over a bonfire with fire pits that are available at a first-come first-served basis if you want more of a challenge you can head towards the pier we can ride the same
