ride with all the ease of your standard dirt bike but in case you haven't noticed the bikes assy seems to be mounted to a drone here's a biker come pilot taking the scorpion for a spin in a warehouse in Moscow it's capable of reaching speeds of 30 miles per hour and an altitude of 33 feet the machine can stay airborne for half an hour on one charge it might look like the stuff of James Bond but it could be yours for somewhere in the region of a hundred and twenty thousand pounds and there are even plans for it to be used for everyday purposes if perhaps you fancy a new way to commute [Music] flying floating soaring and gliding for centuries today technology has caught up with science fiction and the concept of hovering and hovercraft is finally here I visited a super-secret garage in Los Angeles to meet Tim Desroches of air effects the company that created this a vehicle they call the Aero X just don't call it a hover bike the Aero X is a surface effect vehicle a lot of people call it a hover bike technically it's not a hover bike a hovercraft is something that operates only in two dimensions on the ground and the Aero X is a vehicle that gets up to 15 feet off the ground and operates in three dimensions so it has pitch and has yaw the Aero X is the brainchild of Tim's cousin Mark Desroches an aerospace engineer seeing the prototype up close was pretty cool I feel like I've stepped into a dream in the future this vehicle design is actually not entirely new it was a design that came out of the military decades ago but in that case it was more like a helicopter and the guy was just riding it operating it like a helicopter sitting on top on the Aero X the rider rides it like a motorcycle so you're sitting atop it and you're flying it intuitively and the vehicles following your emotions so what is the key innovation here the key Novation is the control system is flaps they're called ejectors that run around the perimeter of each fan and they control the airflow on the perimeter and closing or opening them will allow you to control the pitch of the vehicle and the yo of the vehicle pitch is the up and down movement of an object in air or yah is it side-to-side movement so how far up off the ground can this get so we are aiming to operate the vehicle 5 to 15 feet off the ground we want to be flying over fences over cars we wanted to fly over a field of corn for example the applications that were most excited about our agriculture and search-and-rescue and recreation I think the vehicle is going to be a lot of fun Tim let me climb on the aero-x which is made out of carbon fiber to get a feel for the controls there you go how does it feel very cool as I do this as you go forward and back you're controlling the air flow and that's going to control your altitude okay so this is controlling the up and down yep okay and then as you dip you lates your wrists then you are controlling the pitch okay and the yaw of the vehicle okay and the way you're doing that is opening and closing these flaps these ejectors along the perimeter so how much training does this require to take out so you're gonna need about 2 hours of training to fly this vehicle pretty effectively because the Aero X lies below 15 feet off the ground you don't need a pilot's license to riding [Music] [Music] [Music] sorry I can't trust you anymore [Music] [Music] the idea of cards that can fly has been around since at least 1940 when Henry Ford said flying cars were on the way what he didn't know was that it would take 80 more years for one to go beyond prototype stage and to go into production the era 'mobile 4.0 flying car goes into production later this year 2017 with delivery expected in 2020 l 'mobile which is based in central europe has been working on various prototypes since 2010 and has built an international team of more than 40 engineers and designers from eight countries the latest version airmobile 4.0 is a hybrid electric on the ground and gasoline powered in the air in ground mode the 300 horsepower 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine drives a generator that powers the electric motors that turn the wheels in flight engine power is transferred to the rear mounted propeller on the road the vehicle can travel up to 100 miles per hour for more than 400 miles in the air it can fly non-stop for almost 500 miles while cruising at speeds of up to 160 miles per hour the vehicle seats two people a driver and a passenger and can transform from the drive mode into flight mode in less than three minutes but air 'mobile needs a runway to take off the land and operators will have to be certified pilots as with most designs for flying cars the air mobile 4.0 has wings that fold out from the body for flying and back into the body for driving I did a video on our mobile 3.0 about two years ago and the vehicle was amazing to look at and since then the company has made hundreds of improvements both in design and in engineering in the era 'mobile 4.0 the vehicle is about 19 feet long and 7 feet wide configured for driving which gives it about the same footprint as a midsize pickup truck as a car it fits into any standard parking space uses regular gasoline and can be used in road traffic just like any other car as a plane it can use any airport in the world but can also take off from land using any grass strip or paved surface just a few hundred meters long while driving Ella Beale will use a unique glass cockpit system with the display setup familiar to those in the aviation world these integrated digital displays will show the necessary information pertaining to the automotive operation of the vehicle and on takeoff will transform seamlessly into the perfect display system for use in flight mode the exterior is fashioned from carbon composites to maximize strength while minimizing weight the cockpit is fashioned from a high-strength monocoque structure and in an emergency the [Applause] [Music] you [Applause] it looks like something developed for a Hollywood blockbuster but there's nothing science fiction about Finmeccanica x' project zero tiltrotor demonstrator the all electric ducted fan design is the focus of a long-term technology demonstrator program for the italian helicopter manufacturer among other partners in the program the aerodynamic design was undertaken by Italian design house for Tony this is the world first fully electric converter plane and also we developed something called the individual relay control which is a unique control method had never been done on any rota grab in addition the entire aircraft is has made of carbon graphite construction and if there's no transmission that that's a direct ride and power by very high energy density lithium polymer Pichardo batteries then mechanic is AgustaWestland division has yet to determine how will when the project may result in a defined aircraft platform but the research work is already promising tangible benefits the advantage of the individual play control is that we are able to control the blade pitch angle of individual play individually the advantages include now we can use the four primary control as well as using active control feedback so we can vary the blade angle constantly as it goes around the azimuth to reduce vibration to cancel external noise to improve aerodynamic efficiency and to alleviate the gust respond to give you a smoother and quieter light and all the technology we develop out of this for example this an all-electric low hydraulic electrical mechanical actuator technology currently we are borrowing that if you put on other platform for exam a retractable landing gear on a helicopter are now electric power the shape of the airframe may yet change after further as hit unscheduled flight testing in theory it can be operated as either a manned or unmanned aircraft right now we have successfully tested all the power system and lifted off the ground and the next step is we are considering couldn't we one day go into a hybrid version of this besides just electric we also could been testing this was the model configuration just test the lift over drag and the flying characteristics one day we will be able to maybe see a fully rechargeable electric vertigo take off Raja zero flying in a decade from now [Music] [Music]
